Mini size, mighty sound

The deceptively small Imagine Mini is sure to make a big sonic impact in your home. Expect to hear the kind of realistic sound PSB's larger Imagine series speakers are known for — including an impressively large soundstage and surprisingly low bass — from a speaker that's both versatile and cute.

A pair of Imagine Minis makes an impressive desktop system. Or use them with any of the other speakers in the Imagine family to create a multichannel home theater system. Plus, their compact, seamlessly curved cabinets make them ideal for stylish urban environments where space is at a premium.

PSB Imagine mini group shot

The Imagine Mini comes in five beautiful finishes: Black Ash, High-gloss White, High-gloss Black, Dark Cherry, and Walnut.

Precise driver design for natural sound

Each Imagine Mini features a highly accurate 1" titanium dome tweeter that produces smooth, sparkling highs. The 4-1/2" woofer uses a proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone, which makes it very stiff and light. The resulting midrange is clean and balanced, with tight bass response.

A highly efficient motor structure drives the woofer, and uses a unique compound magnet that helps to reduce any audible distortion from the speaker. It means you'll hear every note as clearly and accurately as it was recorded by the artist.

Solid, elegantly curved cabinets

All Imagine speakers have smooth, 1-1/2"-thick front baffles that blend almost seamlessly with the seven-layer laminated MDF side, top, and bottom panels. Plus, the heavy internal bracing ensures an impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosure.

The top, side, and bottom panels of the Black Ash, Dark Cherry, and Walnut speakers are clad in a real wood veneer that's hand selected for its beauty and quality. The High-gloss Black and High-gloss White speakers are finished with multiple coats of high-gloss paint, hand-polished to a stunning shine.

Great set of Bookshelf Speakers

Jim from Fresno, CA on 2/3/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You will not go wrong with this set of PSB imagine mini speakers. They will fill a nice size room fully and when paired with a nice subwoofer you will be in music heaven. I also own PSB tower speakers and in my opinion PSB speakers are way above any store brand speakers. I purchased my set as "scratched and dented" but I could not find any defects on the speakers when they were received. Shipping was fast and the price was fair for a great set of bookshelf speakers. I will continue to use Crutchfield for all my audio needs.

Pros: clarity, nice shape for bookshelf speaker, cherry finish is nice.

Cons: none

PSB Minis + NAD 705 = Excllent Desktop Sound

Tom from San Jose, CA on 2/2/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use these speakers on my desktop and the sound is excellent. I am using the NAD 7050 amplifier to drive them, and the fact that they are designed to work together (owned by the same company), probably helps. They compare favorably, albeit slightly differently, to the Definitive Incline speakers, which I also own. The PSBs sound better at a higher volume level, at least to my ears. The PSB/NAD combination enables a feature called "Pitch Perfect" to be utilized, although I honestly couldn't tell much of a difference. Maybe it's me.

Pros: Nice sound. Beautiful cabinets. About as good as its gonna get for a nearfield/desktop audio experience.

Cons: Proprietary mounting bracket is a bit bulky. Maybe they should've used the standard 3/8" mount. But that's a nit. The only other con is that I cannot turn them up enough to fully appreciate them until after everyone else goes home for the day...

I use these as main speakers.

Nima from Irvine, CA. on 12/1/2016

I really love these speakers, i have them on 26" tall stands powered by an Emotiva Mini-X amplifier and paired with a 10" Velodyne 200w rms Sub. When using these as main stereo fronts these speakers produce enough bass on their own that the music sounds full but not enough bass to run them without a sub. The sounds is on the brighter side as with most metal tweeter speakers however the sound is never harsh, intrusive, or fatiguing. The sound these produce is very enjoyable, i listen to them for about 2 hours a day everyday and have been doing so for about 2 years now. Separation and clarity is phenomenal, sound stage is good from the listening position due to their small size and adequate off center, every instrument sounds amazing with good decay as well as vocals. I had a tweeter go out (which PSB replaced for free) and i thought i'd maybe buy something new, i searched for weeks and couldn't find anything i'd be happy with in the sub $1,000 range. These speakers are very difficult to top and while sound is subjective to a degree i think most people will really enjoy these. I highly recommend these if they are within your budget or even if they are slightly over budget.

Pros: -Clarity -Small Size -Great power handling -Can play very loud -Looks/ real wood veneer

Cons: -speaker connections are underneath and are a bit of a pain to get to if using banana plugs, bare wire is probably best. -like any speaker this size (woofer smaller that 6.5") needs a sub for a truly immersive music experience.

Good Little Speakers

Overall, excellent bookshelf speakers for the smaller size. Somewhat pricey though

Pros: Excellent build and sound quality

Cons: Pricey

Perfect for my needs

Mark S from Cleveland, Ohio on 4/28/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a pair of PSB Imagine Minis to replace a set of Dynaudio Excite-12 speakers in a secondary system that I have in my living room when I relocated them to another system in the basement. I wanted the new speakers to be as small as possible because location on a credenza is mandatory. I realize this is not an optimum set up, but I don't have a choice. The Dynaudios are on spiked sand-filled steel stands in the basement and pulled out from the wall 3 feet. (much better setup). The PSB's are mated with an Arcam Solo and Naim speaker cable and sound pretty amazing in less than ideal locations. Even though they are not separated as much as I would like and closer to the wall (about a foot away) than normal, the sound is not strident or edgy and presents a decent soundstage. The drivers seem to be high quality as the speaker resolves very well. The PSB Minis work very well for my needs in a secondary system.

Pros: Sounds good in less than ideal conditions

Cons: As noted by others, a little finicky when hooking up speaker cable to bottom recessed binding posts

Excellent Bookshelf speakers

Tim from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL on 4/27/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these for nearfield use on my desk, powered by PS Audio Sprout. Replaced PSB PS1s. Clarity is (expectedly) greatly improved. They were actually bassier than I wanted when they were on the desk, but now have them elevated off the desk using small isolation pads. Bass is now tight. Very easy-going sound, may not be as technical as some would want, but I certainly like listening to them!

Pros: Great sound from tiny package Better bass than I expected for my use Small form factor great for small spaces

Cons: Weird binding post positioning/access means you'll prefer bare wire, thin bananas, or something else skinny.

Bringing up the rear

Mr. D from Upstate NY on 3/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All the reviews are on the money ( i.e. Smooth rich sound in a small package) Speaking of money; they are pricey, but I keep going back to PSB speakers for their quality, both in design and sound. I have never regretted the decision.

Pros: Clear sound full bodied sound, good looks.

Cons: The price

Smooth, rich sound in a small package

Tom D from Babylon on 12/28/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am rating these speakers 5 stars based on what they are: small, solid, well made, pleasant sounding speakers. I originally wanted a full size set to replace my Wharfedale Delta 70's, but I came upon these and bought them based upon their reviews and the free speaker stands. I also have as listening reference my Dad's old Telefunkens and my brother's Diamond 2's. Also listened to Diamobd 7's, B&W 685's and KEF Q300's. The PSB's are deceptively full bodied, with precise reproduction that spreads througout the room when necessary while retaining the delicate nuances of the recording, which at times can be a detriment as they reveal any imperfections due to their ability to replicate sound so well. They are precise and efficient, if not a little limited due to their size. These beauties are so well crafted, and perfectly matched to their attractive stands, which truly enhance, their their sound, that I fell in love with them. Literally. And they only seem to get better as they've "broken in", which is probably just my ears getting used to them more and more. Highly recommended for their quality, especially for somebody who just appreciates good sound.

Pros: Sound, looks, quality, value with free stands. Loud enough for my taste, (which can be loud (according to my wife), no sub neccessary in my opinion.

Cons: Small, somewhat limited in wide range dynamics.

Amazing little speaker

DavidK from Toronto, Ontario on 7/14/2015

I bought these to pair with a small (8") subwoofer to create a compact, near-full range system in a small living room. They took a while to break in but the sound is amazing. They provide very clean mid-bass down to about 90 Hz, then I let the sub take over down to 35 Hz. There's no false mid-bass hump trying to cover for the lack of deep bass in the PSB Mini, so pairing with a good sub is easy. The treble is clear and sweet with no high end roll-off (they use the same tweeter as the higher-priced PSB Imagine towers). The midrange is fantastic and stereo imaging is good, mostly confined to the space between and in front of the speakers. Female vocals in particular just seem to float in the air - very nice. Off-axis dispersion is good. These speakers should be placed on stands to get the best results, but watch the distance from the rear wall since they are rear-ported. I auditioned these PSB Minis compared to several other audiophile brands of similar price and size, and overall the Minis were superior for neutrality, definition and clarity. If you're looking for a tiny but high quality speaker it's hard to go wrong with these.

Pros: Very neutral and clear sounding Beautiful mids and highs, and good mid-bass from such a small driver and cabinet The tiny cabinet is easy to place in smaller rooms No mid-bass hump so pairing with a subwoofer is easy Beautifully designed and finished

Cons: Long break-in period Needs a sub to achieve deep bass (like all speakers this size) Efficiency is on the low side Expensive but worth it

PSB Imagine Mini

MHull from Davis, CA on 5/28/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are awesome. I'm glad I popped the extra money. I have very limited space and no room for a subwoofer. Nancy advised my that these speakers didn't need one, and she was right. The sound is warm and mellow, the size is perfect, and the speakers themselves are beautiful to look at and to handle. Treat yourself.

Pros: Small, beautiful, perfect sound

Cons: You can't use banana clips unless you hang the back of the speaker off the edge of the bookshelf (not much of a con, though. Everything else about theses speakers overrides this one disadvantage).

Very engaging speakers

OBlistenin from Washington on 5/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been thoroughly enjoying these speakers. Voices sound great and are well placed with other instruments accompanying them. Very engaging and the bass is all that I need (I'm not really a bass head, though).

Pros: Voices sound natural and presented well with the rest of the accompanying sounds

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for warmth and clarity, and if you listen to vocals/Jazz, or chamber classical music, these are the speakers you need. Johnny Hartman with John Coltrane, Diana Krall, cello suites of Bach by Starker sound out of this world. Get these if you are an audiophile

Pros: Crisp sound and great eparation of musical instruments and warmth with long hours of listening without fatigue. Great look as well and little footprint.

Cons: None so far for my usage

Amazing speaker, small profile

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are amazing. I needed something small because of my set up. These are so loud and so crisp! They have more power than I could ever use and fit in my room great.

Great little speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have these speakers paired with with a Marantz PM5005 In my living room. (about 350sq.ft) and they have no trouble filling the space. Bass levels are incredible for a speaker this size. Overall sound is spectacular.

Pros: Fantastic Speaker. Not cheap but well worth the price.

Cons: none

Awsome little speakers

Jose I from Bethesda MD on 10/20/2014

These speakers are small enough that they will fit any room, yet amazingly clear and powerful enough that they will deliver very decent bass. When hooked up to a home theatre system they offer a level of detail and clarity which I had not heard in the Energy speakers I had before, voices are crisp yet full, music sounds more like music out of a stereo system than a out of a home theater system. They are not cheap, but you won't be disappointed.

Great speakers

JimS from Yonkers, NY on 2/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound out of these speakers are excellent. I particularly love the sound from a full chorus and classical. Piano music is crisp! They even hold up for LP's...not many speakers today can perform that test.

Fantastic Sound in a Small Package

Bob from Athens, Georgia on 6/1/2013

When I called Crutchfield for advice on which speakers to purchase, the representative with whom I spoie strongly suggested the PSB Imagine Mini. I was skeptical at first, but I decided to accept the advice I was hearing. The fact that I could return the speakers if I did not like them also played an important role in my decision to buy the SBs. Needless to say, I have been very pleased with these mighty minies. The sound quality is very clear and clean which was promised. The small size of these speakers makes it possible to move the speakers at will and still enjoy the sound. I listen mainly to classical music. With these speakers I am hearing detail that until now had eluded my ears. Don't let the small size of these speakers put you off. I am of the firm opinion that I am hearing high quality sound over the entire audio spectrum. Now that I have positioned these little jewels for the best possible sound, I have no reservations at all about my decision to purchase these speakers.

Pros: very clean sound

Cons: Spending $1000 more might have brough a better speaker. Right now, I doubt it.

Amazing, and they get better with break in

Joe from Connecticut on 1/27/2013

I had the Image B4s but swapped them out for these due to lack of bass in the B4s and a desire for more clarity. I was not disappointed. These have amazingly clear and tight bass that goes deep enough that a sub is not needed. It is not bloaty or boomy. With an amp with tone control, you can even feel the bass. These are absolutely amazing. The imaging is great. The only downside is the treble is very slightly rolled off.

Pros: Clarity, tight and articulate bass, size, very musical but not colored

Cons: Slightly rolled off treble

Bill S from Pasadena, CA on 5/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a pair of PSB Imagine Ts in the past, so between my own experience and all the great reviews in the press, I had high hopes for the Imagine Minis. They exceeded my expectations by a longshot. The imaging and tonal balance is terrific. My wife and I just sat in amazement at what these little guys could do. I had originally planned to use them as surrounds but after auditioning them, I decided they were going into my office system, paired with a Peachtree Nova integrated amplifier. There isn't a lot of low end, but more than I anticipated. What you do get is nothing short of amazing coming from a 4" LF Driver in a cabinet smaller than a half gallon milk container. They're not full-sized towers, so it isn't fair to compare them to something with multiple LF drivers and a high volume cabinet. However, pairing the Minis with a solid sub yields pretty magical results. I've placed mine in a bookshelf without a sub and am very happy with the results. I recommend these to anyone seeking a small, high quality speaker.

Pros: Great imaging, small footprint, smooth, even tonal balance

Cons: A little expensive but worth it

Took a while, but...

Tom from Rochester NY on 4/8/2012

I got these as surrounds to go along with Synchrony 2 T&C, driven by an NAD T787. Because of the odd shape of my living room, wanted more "wall mount friendly" surrounds than my old DefTech SM350s had been, and mating the Minis with the new PSB wall mount made sense. The 350s provided the fullest sound and dispersion that I'd had previously with surrounds, so I was used to that. When I got the Minis mounted, I was expecting a lot, but was initially very disappointed -- both with sound quality and achieving a decent surround effect. I was thinking that I'd made a big mistake. But I played around quite a bit with positioning them, and streamed Airplay for many hours in multi-channel stereo mode to see if breaking them in would help. It did -- after several days they opened up, and the overall sound quality was significantly better. Regarding surround sound positioning, though, these speakers are very directional (makes sense, as not much "bottom"), and thus respond quite differently with just very minor vertical and horizontal tweaks of the wall mount. I typically just use surrounds for TV/Movies, and as long as I'm close to a sweet spot, these provide good quality surround sound, can easily handle anything thrown at them from the surround channels (have them crossed over at 80Hz). Based on sound quality, these would be exceptional choices as fronts for a small system/room. As surrounds for a larger system, they're very good, but do have some limitations.

Pros: Sound quality, size, musical, wall-friendly with the PSB wall mount, blend in OK with Synchrony fronts & center

Cons: Not much low end, long break-in period, very directional

Sound unexpected!

Morton from San Francisco Bay Area on 2/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Because of its size the Mini can't be expected to produce the lowest of lows - etc - however what the Mini does is unexpected joy. Having several systems and speakers of varied size the overall pleasant neutrality of the music puts it into a niche of comfortable listening and most certianly hearing comfort not found too often in speakers larger and far more costly. Other speakers in my stable are small to large floor standers, and I must confess don't give my ears the comfort and seeming accuacy these small speakers give forth. I' m using one of my NAD amplifiers to fire them up along with a NAD and Marantz CD - Have been very pleased with Crutchfield and their return policy they give to customers, albiet, they won't see their product returned.

I wanted to like them....

Steve from Nashville on 2/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted to like these speakers, they look great, feel very solidly built. The sound just was not what I had hoped....sound was somewhat empty to me, no rich warm feel. Crutch field is top notch and accepted my return.

True-to-Nature Sound: The PSB Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker produces a large soundstage and impressive bass along with the true-to-nature sound for which PSB is known. The PSB Imagine mini has a wide frequency and dynamic range, natural tonal balance, and precise spatial imaging needed to make both music and movies lifelike and enjoyable.

2-Way Design: The PSB Imagine mini employs a 2-way speaker design. It houses a single 1" ferrofluid-cooled titanium dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet and one 4.5" clay/ceramic filled polypropylene woofer with rubber surround. The result is startlingly big and commanding sound with fine detail and emotion.

  • 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, ferrofluid-cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.
  • 4.5" Clay/Ceramic Filled Polypropylene Woofer: The 4.5" woofer cone is clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The woofer's magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plug enhances linearity at higher frequencies.

Crossover Network: PSB engineers designed the crossover frequency very low relative to the woofer size in order to provide the same sound no matter where the speaker is placed. The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeter and woofer are crossed over at 2,200 Hz.

Enclosure Design

Small Cabinet: The PSB Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker is the smallest member of the imagine family. The cabinet measures just 5.6875" (w) x 9.375" (h) x 8.25" (d), and weighs only 6.5 lbs.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The PSB Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker uses a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for higher efficiency and deeper bass.

Detachable Grille: The PSB Imagine mini includes a detachable cloth/metal grille.

Binding Posts: The binding post input terminals are located on the bottom of the speaker cabinet. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs also fit, but because the posts are on the bottom of the speaker, the banana plug extends below the bottom surface and the speaker can't sit flat on a shelf. Single banana plugs may work with some wall brackets and stands.

Color-Coded: The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

Mounting Options

Rubber Base: The PSB Imagine mini features an integrated rubber base to help secure the speaker in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Optional Speaker Stands: The PSB PFS-27 speaker stand (760PFS27, sold separately) is designed specifically for the Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker.

Optional Wall-Mount Brackets: There are two M6 threaded inserts on the bottom of each speaker that can be used with PSB's PWB-1 wall-mount bracket (760PWB1, sold separately).

Note: The speakers contain no integrated mounting brackets or keyhole slots.

Frequency Response:

  • On Axis @ 0°: 55-23,000 Hz (+/-3 dB)
  • On Axis @ 0°: 65-20,000 Hz (+/-1.5 dB)
  • Off Axis @ 30°: 65-10,000 Hz (+/-1.5 dB)
  • Low Frequency Cutoff -10 dB: 50 Hz

  • Anechoic Chamber: 85 dB
  • Typical Listening Room: 87 dB

Why did you buy this?

Recommended by the JC and fits on a premade matching speaker stand. Only rated to 80 Watts and the Marants 8XXX is supposed to push up to 120 so we will see how they do. [ Shawn  Jan 20, 2019 ]

Needed a set of L/C/R speakers that didn't take up much space. Was looking at passive soundbars and bookshelf speakers to connect to my Pioneer SC-05 AVR. Always like to check out Crutchfield due to their good selection and organization, and saw the PSB Imagine Mini and Mini C. Mocked them up using foam-core and liked their size in the space I had available, and I've seen good reviews so I decided to take the plunge. Looking forward to seeing (and hearing) the real thing when they arrive. [ Scott  Feb 14, 2017 ]
I have PSB speakers and love them. Store brand speakers don't compare to PSB speakers in my opinion. I have been wanting bookshelf speakers and Crutchfield sold these speakers and for a good discount. [ Jim  Jan 30, 2017 ]
