From our review of the PSB M4U 2 noise canceling headphones

"These are my favorite noise-canceling headphones I've experienced to date. They're open, bass-forward without being unfocused or obnoxious, well-extended and overall, extremely pleasant to listen to. Plus, they are comfortable, mobile phone friendly and easy to manage while sitting in a coach seat."

Power and comfort

You can select from three different operating modes to fit different listening situations. Passive mode allows you to enjoy your tunes without battery power — ideal for those times when you're playing music through high-quality home audio gear or a headphone amp. Switch to active mode, and the headphone's built-in amplifier kicks in to provide an added boost that turbocharges the sound coming from your portable player. Or, engage the active noise cancellation circuitry when you just want to tune out the world and relax to your music uninterrupted.

Along with delivering fantastic sound, a truly great headphone has to be comfortable. The M4U 2's soft padded earcups feature a two-way adjustable pivoting design for a secure, custom fit and hours of listening enjoyment. Dual input connections let you conveniently plug the cable in on either the left or right earcup. The folding design and included storage case make them easy to take along.

Love the sound!! Best sound I have heard in noise canceling headphones in 20 years of business travel. A little heavy but very adjustable. Also has 3 levels which is great: can be used when your battery dies and can limit the noise canceling so you can hear the flight attendant talk to you. Great!

Fantastic sound

Aaron (pronounced: a a ron, aron, or Erin -- I rea from Decatur, GA on 10/20/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is exquisite. They are comfortable to wear for an hour with thin wire eyeglasses. No problems staying on my head when I use the treadmill or elliptical. Most of the time I don't wear them longer because I have other things to do. Comfort is fine on a 2.5 hour plane trip without wearing glasses - I fell asleep listening to music. Almost all negative reviews I've read contained some truth. They buzz, pop and make motor-boating sounds - and the sounds stop when I put my smartphone into airplane mode. A better smartphone might solve my shielding issue. I don't have problems listening to music on my too expensive for words laptop and streaming an album with non-gapless playback (each track of an album has a distinct beginning pause before sound will play). On my cheap smartphone I have some popping issues at the start of each song when streaming. The solution was to download the album and set my streamer into "offline mode". These headphones are not to be judged when using a poor-quality smartphone and suspect streaming software. The last negative to address is reports of the plastic parts of the headband cracking. In almost two months I have not had this experience. While it could happen to me my response is, "So What?" I'm buying recertified and cheap - I'm buying with my eyes open. Any day I continue to use these after the two-year warranty is a bonus.

Pros: Great sound, comfort and value.

Cons: Require a user willing to futz with smartphone settings if shielding becomes an issue.

Great sound. I especially like the fact you can use without engaging the battery

Poor fit for big headed humans

David from San Francisco, CA on 3/21/2018

I had some Bose QC's that were comfortable and great for noise cancelling, but had mediocre sound. I ordered these because of my respect for PSB and my experience with several PSB speakers that I've ordered from Crutchfield. I did a lot of research before ordering these. They have many features that all headphones should have - incredible sound, replaceable batteries, great noise cancelling. After a couple of weeks of experiencing significant pain from these headphones, I returned them and replaced them with B&W PX's. In my opinion, the PSB's have better sound but the B&W's are better overall. These are just too painful to wear. Kudos to Crutchfield for accepting my return and suggesting the B&W's.

Pros: Replaceable batteries Passive listening mode Beautiful sound Realistic sound stage APTX

Cons: Extremely painful to wear Micro USB charging port. All headphones should use USB-C

Best I ever had!

Pros: Great sound, great noise canceling

Cons: A little heavy, ear cups less wide than Bose 35; if you have wide ears may not fit as well.

Ouch! Ears too sore to enjoy the sonic goodness

Tony from Princeville, HI on 4/13/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loved the sound quality. Hated the fit. It was not that they are "heavy" ( they are), but the ear padding was just not enough: pressure on the bony parts of my (and my wife's)ears after about 30 minutes wear time just did not overcome the mind blowing quality of the sound over the entire audio spectrum. After 45 minutes, the cartilage on our ears literally hurt, as evidenced by the redness and irritation. Pity! Hated to return them...really! Also noting that the "ear" disconfort had nothing to do with the fact that we bought the "recertified" version. There is simply not enough padding in the ear cups for the both of us. Oh, and our ears are not that big, and the Senheiser HD380's we both have been using for years fit very comfortably.

Pros: Superb sound quality with all sources I tried them with. Nice styling and packaging

Cons: They are heavy ( if that matters to you) Experienced physically painful ears after short use.

Factory Refurb will full warranty, such a sweet deal

Gregory from NY on 3/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would give a 4.5 star review if I could but, since I can't I gave it a 5. The sound quality is amazing and the noise cancellation work well enough for flying, I don't have a baseline for comparison as these are my first one. However other people I flew with liked the sound quality and noise cancellation capabilities as well.

Pros: Sound quality, build quality, comfortable. Uses standard AAA batteries and works as headphones even if the batteries run out.

Cons: Based on other reviews the noise cancellation could of worked slightly better but I was still overall happy with what they did filter out on the plane.

PSB M4U2 noise-cancelling headphones

Andrew from AK on 3/3/2017

Disappointed. Arrived from Crutchfield with batteries existing in the headset...that had leaked battery acid all over the headset. The battery life is poor; the sound begins to "crackle" a few hours later after installing fresh batteries. The padding is beginning to delaminate from minimal use and wear. I enjoy quality, and these, in my opinion, have not been high quality.

Pros: Reasonable Sound

Cons: Poor quality, bad experience, would not buy again

Did not live up the the hype

Randy from Mission Viejo, CA on 2/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and have a nice built-in amplifier. Noise cancelling is poor, headphones are incredibly heavy and pinch the face. After 30 minutes the were extremely uncomfortable and not wearable. Build quality is OK but made of cheap plastic. I returned them within a day of receiving them. I was very disappointed.

Pros: Great sound Built in amplifier

Cons: Really heavy Not comfortable Noise cancelling is poor Cheap build quality

Good sound with active and passive functionality.

Bob from San Jose, CA on 2/2/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is excellent across most of the range, and the noise cancelling is also quite effective. What I like is that the headphones work in a passive state (without being turned on) so you don't need batteries for them to work. Also the folding mechanism is nicely designed. The user guide is poorly designed from a functional standpoint. I almost bent the metal plate on one side (that covers the battery compartment) since the booklet doesn't tell how to distinguish which side the batteries go in. It is not obvious. Additionally, you can connect the wire to either side, but it doesn't state that there is no difference which side you use.

Pros: Good sound and option to use them passively which saves on cost and convenience of battery replacement

Cons: User guide is poor. Use caution when installing batteries.

Mixed feelings...

Sean from Hudson, NH on 12/18/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have mixed feelings about these headphones. They are comfortable, but a bit bulky. They sound great in their pass-thru mode (unpowered / no noise reduction). Their over-ear design helps reduce background noise all by itself, even without electronic assistance. The active noise reduction feature works well to reduce fairly steady and fairly low-frequency background noise, like the drone of an airplane engine or a passing motorcycle. However, the noise reduction did little on a recent flight to filter a higher-frequency noise (I don't know what it was, and it vanished shortly after takeoff) -- which meant that higher-frequency noise was actually more prominent when listening with noise reduction enabled, as it stood out more starkly against the quieter background created by the the filtering of engine and other low-frequency noise. I also found that the nose filtering can filter out parts of some music selections. For example, in Black Sabath's Headless Cross, Tony Iommi's guitar has a full, resonant sound. The noise filtering feature of these headphones apparently thinks the resonance is noise and leaves the guitar sounding rather thin. These are my first headphones with active noise cancellation, so I cannot say how they compare with other brands. I'll keep them for the occasional airline flight -- which is what I bought them for -- but I doubt they will displace my other headphones for other uses.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great headphones! I use iPods and my iPhone for music listening when walking or hiking, and they are ideal for making these devices sound good, especially with the amplification turned on. One nice thing is that they ship 2 cables - one that is phone-enabled and the other just for audio - a nice 'do not disturb' feature. They are very comfortable on the ears. You can be confident buying these refurbished if that is your choice - you would never know that they weren't factory-new. Cheers!

Alex from South Park, PA on 11/17/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying that I am a PSB ADDICT !! With that said, my review is less than typical for a PSB product... I purchased these M4U 2 headphones to replace my Beats Studio Headphones that after 3 uses, smell like vinegar !!! I'm guessing from sweat ?? The PSB are very impressive in terms of looks, functionality, and overall performance, BUT, I wasn't as "Wowed" as I thought. Headphones made by my Favorite Manufacturer ?!?! Don't get me wrong though, I am drummer of 30+ years and am VERY PARTICULAR when it comes to tuning in sound to "MY LIKING" !!! Now, the price on these Refurbished sets, CAN'T BE BEAT if you are searching for Full Size Headphones in this price segment. TRUST ME, they WAY outperform ANY Beats product I own, and I have 6 sets of THEIR In Ear, and Full-Size Headphones... So, DON"T let these pass you by if you are in the Full Size market, there is NOTHING out there AT THIS PRICE that even CLOSELY competes !!!! In conclusion, they do have Active Noise Cancellation, which I TRULY don't understand, as I feel it really TAKES AWAY a good bit of the quality sound of a PSB Product. Nice Packaging, 2 detachable cords ( Why 2 I Don't Know) Headphone Adapter Jack, Rigid Case and Carabineer are also included as well. Make the purchase, you will not be disappointed !!! Good Luck...

Pros: Great Price Great Sound Quality Built Nice Packaging (I.E.- 2 Cords, Adapter, etc.) Balanced Tonal Sound Crutchfield's EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE Crutchfield's EXCELLENT SUPER FAST SHIPPING

Cons: None to be had...

Scott from Hawthorne, CA on 11/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace some Bose QC25 noise canceling headphones; the sound quality is comparable, however the noise canceling and comfort are not. These headphones are extremely bulky and the noise canceling is barely noticeable when activated.

Pros: Less Expensive Build Quality Sound Quality

Cons: Bulky Terrible Noise Canceling

Great headphones

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a very frequent passenger on airplanes across the country, I've been searching for the best sounding, noise cancelling cans I could find. Finally decided to give the PSB M4U2 a go and was pleased when I received them. But then after listening for a few hours, I found myself wondering if I should have gone with the Bose QC35's as I typically like a bit more bass than what the M4U2's were delivering. Thanks to the InMotion shop in DFW Terminal D, they allowed me to do comparison's of my M4U2's vs everything else they carried including the QC35's and that was all it took. So the QC35's have undoubtedly better noise cancelling, the sound was comparable to mud when compared to the M4U2's. The clarity the M4U2's provide is astounding. High's are clear, mids are clear and the bass while a bit on the weak side for my taste is also incredibly clear. They absolutely blew away every other set of cans I tried....Audio Technica, Bose, Sony, B&W, Sennheiser....the only one's I didn't try were the Zik Parrot 3's as I had read too many bad reviews on them. I'm now about 45 days into ownership of the M4U2's and am more than pleased! They are extremely comfortable even on 3-4 hour flights. The noise cancelling is adequate, the comfort is fantastic and the sound is superb! I've not had one issue with these and I was also very pleased at the case/accessories that they came with. Very high quality product all around.

Pros: Sound is superb; Comfort; Quality

Cons: Would like just a tad bit more bass

Extremely good sound quality, with an extreme defect

MaxP from Cortland, NY on 9/30/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is such a torment to me. I have tried with all my being to like them, but then the pop-pop-pop-pop-pop noise comes back to haunt me. Let me elaborate on that sound a bit. The first couple of weeks I had this product, they were amazing. The only down sides I noticed were the plastic head-band, which breaks very easily according to other reviews i have seen, and they are kind of heavy. However, the real problem came in after those couple of weeks. I would be listening to music in the headphone's ASC (Active Sound Cancelling) mode and certain sounds (banging or loud cracking noises) or actions (tapping the headphone or simply chewing) would create this extremely loud, irritating, pop-pop-pop-pop-pop noise. It seems like the headphones get stuck in a feedback loop that amplifies itself. Much like putting a microphone to close to a speaker. After a few hours of research, it appears this is a very common problem. I plan on returning these for another pair but am apprehensive after reading the other reviews and am upset to find out that a product with such a price has such apparent defects.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Pop-pop-pop-pop-pop feedback sound produce in active noise cancelling mode is painful and infuriating.

PSB M4U 2 (Factory Recertified)

Jalal from Rochester, NY on 9/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have tried this head for a trip tobfar east trip. 13 hours each way. Noise cancelling function is quite effective. Same or similar to Bose QC25. I have tried it with high def audio player. FIIO X7. Mid range and vocals are good. Bass is very weak and highs are noisy are distorted. Not a great headphone for high definition music listening. Why 3 stars? Extermly uncomfortable. After 1 hour of usage. My ears hurting. I had to constantly move the headphone around. It got so bad that after 6 hours on a 13 hours flight I gave up. If Crutchfield take it back. I will return it.

Pros: Effectieve noise canceling. Decent but not great sound

Cons: Very uncomfortable and bulky.

Compared these side by side in another store and found the refurbished pair here. After years of using a cheaper pair of noise-cancelling headphones, these are awesome. PSB is a brand that I always consider for audio and they do not disappoint here.

Pros: Great sound Solid noise cancelling Complete set of accessories and case

Cons: .Size is a little bigger than comparable headphones, but not enough to offset the Pros/

Wonderful Sounding Cans

Pete from Cleveland, OH on 5/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just got these and have been ABing them to other headphones I have. My musical tastes are greatly varied from Classical to folk to funk to jazz etc. These have a really nice tight/crisp low end, not boomy, with a crispness and yet warmth that makes strings (especially string bass) sound great. Tower of Power sounds really great as well as Ralph Towner. Sound isolation works well too. They are very comfortable to wear and pretty light with very good build quality. I love all the extra equipment they give you with these cans too, two cords, airplane plug adapter, nice protective storage case and small plug with a snap on large plug. They thought of everything.

Pros: Sound, build quality, storage case, extras.

Cons: A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Product Research

Overview: The PSB M4U 2 headphones are part of the Music for You (M4U) series of high performance headphones. The M4U 2 has Active Noise Cancellation, powered by two "AAA" batteries (supplied), which eliminates external noise. The headphones come with two 5' cables (one with an in-line remote/microphone and one without), airline and 1/4" adapters, an extra set of earpads, and a semi-hard zippered storage case.

Operation Modes: The M4U 2 headphones feature three modes of operation, controlled by a 3-way switch on the right earcup: Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Active Mode, and Passive Mode. When ANC is activated, external noise is picked up by the built-in microphones and canceled by introducing an inverted (out-of-phase) signal. At the same time, the incoming audio signal is amplified by the built-in amplifier. In Active Mode, the audio signal is amplified, but there is no Active Noise Cancellation. In Passive Mode, both active circuits (ANC and amplifier) are shut off, and the music is driven by the connected device. You can listen in Passive Mode when your batteries are exhausted.

Room Feel: The M4U 2 has Room Feel technology, which gives the headphones the same true-to-nature sound as a pair of PSB's in-room loudspeakers.

Ear Pads: The soft earpads are designed for comfort and fit. The ergonomic ear pads are gyro-suspended and self-adjusting to give you a precise fit. The M4U 2 comes with a spare pair of earpads.

Cables: The M4U 2 includes two 5' tangle-free cables, which can plug into either side. Both cables have an in-line Monitor button (see Monitor Function below). One cable is designed for use with your smartphone, and includes an in-line remote and microphone. The remote lets you answer and hang up your call, and play/pause, skip forward, and skip backward. The controls are compatible with iPhone and Blackberry. The other cable has no in-line remote/mic. A dual-input airline adapter and 1/4" stereo adapter are included.

Note: The cables must be plugged in with the straight end in the headphones and the right-angled end in the playback device.

Monitor Function: Both included cables have an in-line Monitor button. When pressed and held, the current audio track is attenuated by 30dB, and the surrounding sounds will be amplified through the headphones. The Monitor Function only works when the headphones are in Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) mode.

Batteries: The M4U 2 noise-canceling headphones are powered by two "AAA" batteries (supplied), which are inserted into the left earcup. Battery life is approximately 55 hours on average when using Active Noise Cancellation. You can use rechargeable batteries if desired, however, battery life will be shorter.

  • Frequency Response (+/- 1.5dB): 20-20,000 Hz
  • Sensitivity (1kHz/1mW): 102dB
  • Power Handling: 30mW maximum
  • Impedance: 32 ohms (passive), 10k ohms (active/ANC)
  • Driver Size: 40mm
