Built-in microphone and a rugged, shockproof design
This cam has a professional-quality mic, so it'll pick up the same sounds you hear the swoosh of your skis as you carve through the snow and every "whoo-hoo" you yell and not just the howl of the wind. If you lose your balance and wipe out, one thing you won't have to worry about is breaking your GoPro HD Helmet Hero. Its polycarbonate housing is water- and shock-proof, so it can survive a fall...maybe even better than you.
Watch your videos on your TV or upload them to the web
As you come to the end of the run you can't stop thinking how great this HD video is going to look on your TV. Just hook the camera up using the included component video cable. Features
Overview: The GoPro HD Helmet Hero is an ultra-compact digital camera/HD camcorder, designed to take HD videos and 5-megapixel still photos in extreme situations. The package includes a clear waterproof housing and various mounts for attaching the camera to three helmets, and 2 other locations, plus a head strap that allows you to wear the camera like a headlamp. Optional accessories allow you to mount the camera on your wrist, bike, scooter, jet ski, or surfboard.
Optics: The HD Hero has a fixed focus, f/2.8 ultra wide angle glass lens. Its focus range is 2' to infinity, and has a 170° angle of view (127° in 1080p mode).
Video Resolution: The HD Hero is capable of recording both High Definition and Standard Definition video in MPEG-4 (H.264) format with mono AAC audio. The following video resolution options are available:
Resolution | Data Rate | Suggested Use |
1080p (16:9) 1920 x 1080 30 fps | 15 Mbps | For high quality filming when narrower field of view (127°) is desired. |
960p (4:3) 1280 x 960 30 fps | 12 Mbps | Offers the most vertical viewing area; 4:3 aspect ratio |
720p (16:9) 1280 x 720 60 fps | 15 Mbps | Offers the widest field of view (170°); best for slow motion playback. |
720p (16:9) 1280 x 720 30 fps | 8 Mbps | Ultra wide field of view; best for normal playback. |
WVGA (16:9) 848 x 480 60 fps | 8 Mbps | Wide angle, standard definition video; smaller file size |
Still Images: The HD Hero can take 5 megapixel still images (2592 x 1944) manually (single shot) or automatically at different shooting options. You can shoot photos every 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds. You can also record still photos in a 3-shot burst (in 2 seconds) or using the 10-second self timer.
Storage: The HD Hero records video and still images onto SD and SDHC memory cards (2 GB to 32 GB). No memory is included with the camera, so you will need to obtain an SD/SDHC card prior to recording. For HD video, Class 4 SD cards or higher are recommended. The average recording time capacity of a 32 GB SDHC card is as follows:
-
1080p (30 fps): 4 hours 21 min
-
960p (30 fps): 5 hours 26 min
-
720p (60 fps): 4 hours 21 min
-
720p (30 fps): 8 hours 9 min
-
WVGA (60 fps): 8 hours 9 min
Battery: The HD Hero is powered by the supplied AHDBT-001 rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (3.7V, 1100mAh). It has a battery life of approximately 2.5 hours while shooting video. The battery can be charged to 80% capacity in about 2 hours via a computer's USB port (USB cable supplied), or to a full charge in about 4 hours. You can also use a USB-compatible wall or car charger to charge the battery. The battery will charge to 80% capacity in about 1 hour, or to a full charge in about 2 hours.
Auto Power Off: To save battery power, you can set the camera's Auto Power Off feature to turn off the camera in 1, 2, or 5 minutes after the last button was pressed. The Auto Power Off does not function during shooting.
LCD Screen/Red LED: The small (3/4" diagonal) front panel LCD screen provides camera status indications only. It will indicate the shooting mode, resolution, battery status, and setup menu. The camera's red LED will blink to indicate the camera is recording. It can be turned off, if desired, for stealth.
Exposure Control: You can choose between two exposure settings:
-
Center Weighted Average: best for normal outdoor and indoor lighting conditions
-
Spot: used primarily for shooting from inside a car or other dark space, looking out into a brighter outside setting. The exposure is adjusted for the absolute center of the screen.
Upside Down Image: If you need to mount the camera upside down to get the perfect angle for your video or still images, you can set the camera to save the photo upside down so they will appear right side up on your computer or TV.
Connections: The HD Hero has the following connections:
-
USB: Mini-B USB 2.0 (High Speed)
-
A/V: 2.5mm sub-mini jack for composite video and stereo audio output
-
HDTV: 2.5mm sub-mini jack for component video output
Specifications:
-
Image Sensor: 1/2.5" HD CMOS, 2.2µm-sized pixels

Mounting Options
Waterproof Housing: The HD Helmet Hero comes with a clear, polycarbonate and stainless steel waterproof housing. It has a depth rating of 180 feet. It has two external buttons to allow you to change the camera settings and press the shutter button without removing the camera from the housing. The back door of the housing can be removed and replaced with a non-waterproof back door (supplied). The non-waterproof back door allows more sound to reach the camera's microphone, and is recommended when water damage is not an issue.
Quick Release Mounting: The waterproof housing is mounted to a quick-release buckle that lets you adjust the tilt of the camera. The quick-release slips and locks into any of the supplied mounting bases. A rubberized plug locks the quick release into the base for extra security.
Helmet Mounting Bases: The HD Helmet Hero package includes a mounting base designed to be strapped to a vented helmet. The adjustable straps thread through the vents on the top of the helmet. Two curved-surface and two flat-surface mounts, each with industrial-grade adhesive, are provided for mounting the camera to a helmet, vehicle, or other smooth surface.
Head Strap Mount: In addition to the helmet mounts, the HD Helmet Hero comes with an adjustable head strap mount that you can wear.
Optional Mounts: GoPro offers numerous mounts for the HD Hero camera, including a wrist strap and chest harness. Other mounts can attach the camera to a bicycle seat post or handlebar, a roll bar, surfboard, suction cup, or tripod.
