About the Audioengine A1 Wireless
A desktop champ
A desktop champ
Listening to music while working can present some challenges — you want your music to offer some detail and oomph, but not get loud enough to disturb others. Audioengine A1 powered speakers are compact and attractive, so they look good on your desktop, and they're designed to offer an immersive near-field listening experience that can add a little fun to your workday.
Bluetooth streaming with high-fidelity aptX audio coding offers a convenient and easy way to connect wirelessly. And you can make a direct wired connection with the 3.5mm auxiliary input on the back of the left-hand speaker. There's also a mono RCA output for connecting a powered subwoofer.
My hands-on experience with Audioengine A1 desktop speakers
I got to audition a pair of these compact speakers during the 2020 coronavirus quarantine, and they added a lot of musical uplift to the experience of working from home every day. They looked good flanking my computer monitor, and the volume control on the rear of the powered speaker was easy to access if I needed to turn my tunes down to have a quick conversation with my son, or take an online meeting.
I plugged my phone in a few times while checking out podcasts, but mostly I relied on the speakers' strong built-in Bluetooth, which renders music in 16-bit/48k resolution. I was able to angle the speakers perfectly to create a near-field listening "bubble" that centered the soundfield and made me feel like I was enveloped in music.
There are only a couple of things I'd recommend to improve your listening experience with these speakers. I suggest using the sub output on the back to connect a compact subwoofer to add a little "oomph". And a set of the very reasonably priced Audioengine DS1 desktop speaker stands elevate the speakers and angle them upward by fifteen degrees for a better soundfield, plus they isolate the speakers from the desktop surface to reduce unwanted vibrations.
Perfect power
Dual 15-watt amplifiers built into the left speaker provide all the power these speakers need to sound their best. They're matched to each speaker's 2-3/4" Aramid fiber woofer and 3/4" silk dome tweeter, so you don't have to make room for a receiver or amplifier.

Features
Two-Way Driver Design: The Audioengine A1 utilizes a two-way driver design with a a 0.75 silk soft-dome tweeter and a 2.75" Aramid Fiber cone woofer that delivers real, natural sound; very near to the originally-recorded music. The A1 speaker system has a frequency response of 65Hz to 22,000Hz (+/-2dB)
- Silk-Dome Tweeter: The A1 uses an audiophile-quality, ferro-fluid cooled silk soft-dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. The silk soft-dome tweeter holds up well under high power & the edge-driven design gives a very smooth high frequency response.
- Aramid Fiber Cone: The Aramid fiber cone woofer is very rigid and stiff, but also lightweight so it can respond quickly and reproduce sound accurately. The Aramid fiber cone woofer produces a beautiful and broad midrange with satisfying low end response.
Built-In Amplification: The Audioengine A1 is powered by a two 15W Class D amplifiers built into the left speaker. The built-in Class D amplifiers save space & eliminate the need to connect the A1 to a stereo receiver or external power amp. Simply plug the left speaker into an AC outlet & connect the included 6.5' length of 18AWG speaker wire from the left speaker's spring-clip terminals to right speaker's spring-clip terminals. All internal components of the A1 are tuned together, providing a more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers & amplifiers.
Note: With the amplifier built-in, the left speaker is heavier than the right speaker (4 lbs vs. 3 lbs).
Bass Reflex MDF Cabinet: One of the reasons the Audioengine A1 has such great bass response for a compact speaker is its slot-ported cabinet. Each cabinet features a front-firing slot-port that has been specifically tuned for accurate bass down to 65Hz. The result is incredible low end with minimal audible air turbulence, so you can use the Audioengine 1 speakers with or without a separate subwoofer. The cabinets are built using MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished, then tuned and tested together to be sold in matching pairs.
Note: No grilles are included with the Audioengine A1 speakers.
16-Bit/48kHz DAC: The Audioengine A1 speakers utilize a 16-Bit/48kHz DAC (digital-to-analog converter) for exceptional sound quality when listening to Bluetooth wireless audio from your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.
Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Audioengine A1 speakers are equipped with built-in Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, or laptop. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth source device to the A1 speakers. In addition to Bluetooth's standard SBC codec, the A1 supports AAC for higher quality sound from Apple iOS devices and aptX for "CD-like" (16-bit/48kHz) sound from many Android and Mac devices. The Audioengine A1 speaker system has a wireless Bluetooth range up to 100' and a delay of approximately 30ms (milliseconds). It can pair with up to six device, but only one can be connected and used for playback at a time.
Note: The Audioengine A1 does not support Bluetooth hands-free communication (HFP) for answering and making phone calls.
Aux Input: The Audioengie A1 features a rear-panel Aux input that consists of a stereo 3.5mm minijack connection. The Aux input can be used to connect an external audio source device to the speaker system for audio playback.
Subwoofer Output: The Audioengine A1 is outfitted with a mono-RCA subwoofer output for connection of a powered subwoofer (sold separately) if you desire bigger and deeper bass response.
Mounting Options: Both speakers have a high-density foam isolation pad on the bottom for safe placement on your desk, stand, table, or shelf. Audioengine's optional DS1 Desktop Stands (sold separately) can be used to angle the A1 speakers upward at approximately 15° and add 1.75" the the height of the speakers.
Note: The Audioengine A1 does not included a bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speakers.
AC Power: The Audioengine A1 operates off of standard household current using the included 6' detachable power cord. The included AC powered cord plugs into the left powered speaker and an AC wall outlet or surge protector (sold separately). An auto-standby idle mode is also featured to conserve power when you're not playing music.
