Our take on the Audioengine HD3

No matter where you sit when you work, you want to be able to stream music, and that's what this pair of Audioengine HD3 speakers excels at.

Convenient wireless desktop speakers

No matter where you sit when you work, you want to be able to stream music, and that's what this pair of Audioengine HD3 speakers excels at.

These speakers don't take up much space, and they use Bluetooth with aptX® technology to connect to your mobile device from up to 100 feet away, so you can sit just about anywhere in the room and still listen to high-quality streaming tunes.

If you need to make a wired connection, they've got you covered there, too. Plug in your gear via micro USB, 3.5mm minijack, or stereo RCA (perfect for connecting a turntable with a built-in phono preamp) and let everyone in the room hear your favorite tracks. When it's quiet time, use the headphone jack on the front of the left speaker to jam in your own little world.

My hands-on experience with the HD3s

Audioengine HD3 speakers are compact and versatile, and they sound great. Perfect for work and play in a desktop environment.

Audioengine HD3 speakers are compact and versatile, and they sound great. Perfect for work and play in a desktop environment.

I live in a two-bedroom apartment, and Audioengine HD3 speakers are a good choice for my living space. I know this, because I got a chance to try out a pair recently.

At first, I used them as part of a turntable setup. The RCA inputs on the back of the left speaker made it easy to hook everything up. I dug into the record crates and veered from jazz ballads to raucous garage punk — dual built-in 15-watt amplifiers let me revel in accurate sound without inviting a noise complaint from the neighbors.

My teenaged son is very into PC gaming, so after my week of nostalgic vinyl listening, I decided to connect the HD3 to the desktop computer in his room. During the daytime, he was able to enjoy the dialogue and sound effects out loud, then when I declared grown-up quiet time at night, he plugged in headphones and we were both happy.

When my son heads off to college, I'd like to send a pair of these speakers with him. They're compact enough to fit just about anywhere. They can accommodate an analog connection to a cable or streaming box to enhance TV and movie viewing. The convenient Bluetooth antenna will make it easy to stream music for studying (or, let's face it, partying). There's a USB connection for his computer, and an aux input for his smartphone. These speakers will be a dorm room slam dunk for the most important person in my life.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful near-field speakers. The staging is excellent to the point that it feels like the band is playing at your desk. Have I heard better speakers? Yes. But for an office environment where you don't want to broadcast everything these are nearly perfect. The bass reduction switch is nice. The connections are lovely; and headphones (Sennheiser 380 Pros in my case) sound great coming out of the conveniently located front headphone jack and integrated DAC. I'm going to get my wife a pair for her desk.

Pros: Great soundstage Convenient connections Front headphone jack All needed cables included Build quality

Cons: They're pricey. But you pay for what you get.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ive always enjoyed listening to music on better speakers. However since the time I sold my previous car which I upgraded the entire stereo in until buying these audio engines I can't say I've had a great set of speakers. A friend of mine had a set of hd6s. After listening to those I immediately went to crutchfield and ordered the hd3s. Why? Well my room is small and the hd6s would have been too much for the space. However I can say now after weeks of listening I feel I compromised nothing in sound quality but not opting for the hd6s. The low to high end responses are crystal clear. The volume can go higher and higher and there is zero distortion. The bass is just enough as to not be overpowering. I have heard sounds in my music that I have not heard ever before. There is truly definition in left and right speakers so you know it's playing stereo. At the end of the day the price for these speakers is worth every penny as well as the shipping time you will wait for them. Look at this as an investment. You will use these speakers everyday for years, that equates to pennies after years of use. You will not regret buying these, and if you so chose there are rca outs so you can add extra sets of speakers or a sub.

Great Sounding Desktop Speakers

Crutchfield customer from Elgin, SC on 8/21/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to go with this brand after reading and watching some reviews on the Internet. Although I think the retail price is a bit expensive and I had purchased these prior to the reduced sale price by the manufacturer, I took one star away because of the usb cable that is included. Speakers sound great using the usb connection to my computer; the cable Barely reaches the location of my desktop and the mini usb connection on the cable is not flush witht the back of the speakers when plugged in. The mini usb doen't connect all the way into the usb port on the speaker. Maybe this is normal, don't know. I am disappointed that the usb cable or internal DAC does not support 24 bit and 96Khz (or higher) sampling rate straight from my computer, which can handle up to 192 Khz sampling rate. But even with 16bit 48 Khz, these speakers have very good sound imaging. Ive only tried Bluetooth connection once and they sound really good too. Better value when these speakers are on sale.

Pros: Solid build quality Sound Imaging Magnetic grills Spacious sound envelop from small drivers

Cons: Price Mini USB cable port on speaker 16 bit 48 Khz input to "24 bit" internal DAC

Big sound. Small speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for small speakers for a small room and these are amazing. Great build quality and they project an fantastic soundstage. The lows are ok. If you need more base, then I recommend a sub but I'm happy with them without a sub.

Just right

Mario from Hilmar, CA on 9/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these for my home gym. I wanted something small that would still fill the room with sound. I didn't want to spend a fortune, but I also didn't want crap. These definitely fit the bill and I am really enjoying my workouts a little more these days. Bass isn't great but I didn't expect it to be from these smaller speakers.

Pros: Great sound for such a Small size. Crystal clear and no distortion.

Cons: Would definitely benefit from a separate bass module.

Perfect Solution for Me

Allen from San Francisco, CA on 9/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really work seamlessly. And for someone who just turned 90 , that is a genuine plus. The sound is true, at least for the 40s and 50s jazz and big band music I listen to. Everyone these days seems to spend more time judging on how well the speakers work with music that isn't particularly musical.

Cons: None

Nice product, mediocre sound

Herb from Potomac, MD on 7/14/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Build quality, ease of use, good desktop form factor, and appearance are all excellent. Sound quality not so much. Perhaps playing them louder would help. It's an improvement over standard speakers. Unfortunately, better sounding speakers like Emotiva or Adam) are also about 50% wider and 25% wider making them too large for my desktop.

Pros: Build quality ease of use good desktop form factor appearance

Cons: Sound Quality

Clear sound. Loud enough. Reliable BT connection

Dan from Denver, CO on 6/13/2017

Excellent sound. Especially clear in the upper midrange. Plenty loud for a small room. I use them as a bluetooth stereo and have them on 36" stands. They look a little funny because they are small, but sound great. Especially nice with vocal music. But also sound good with other genres like rock. I generally use them with the bass cut switch activated. It changes the sound signature quite a bit if you allow the bass frequency to pass through. If you want bass, get a sub. I do sacrifice the low end, but I am living in an apartment so that works for me. If you are looking for the deep bass notes of electronic music etc, you will miss them with out a sub. However, it is so easy to pick out instrumental parts. During casual listening I often catch myself hearing parts I normally wouldn't notice. The addition of a remote would have been nice. They pair very quickly and never drop. Great product, a little expensive.

Pros: Clear sound, good connectivity, good volume for size. Incredible compact package competes with other great bookshelf speakers. Space savers dream.

Cons: Light on bass. Low frequency switch colors sound when you DO NOT cut the bass out. Better with switch activated.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a premature 4 but it should really be premature 5 because they really are quite nice. I couldn't deal anymore. I have a decent size music library, Apple Music and Sirius but only a lap top, phone and junky blue tooth speaker. Now it sounds like I have an old school 80's house set up. At first I didn't know where the money I spent went to but I started playing around with them and they are very versatile and above all they sound awesome. I bought them as a small living room set up and I was wondering if I should have got the HD6 instead but these are more than enough. If I lived in an apartment I could see neighbors complaining. The bass is sufficient for desktop set-ups, but for my purposes my next purchase will be the S8 sub. I'm also going to get the DS1 stands because they will vibrate. There are other cost efficient ways to sound deaden them and keep them stable but the stands do look clean. Take it from a cheap skate, spend the money you'll be stoked.

Good, but small

L. CURTIS from Richmond, VA on 5/1/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are good little computer speakers for nearfield listening. The pair I ordered looked great, like small walnut blocks of art sitting on my desk. The soundstage, however, is small. Great from a nearfield position, but not the best if you get up from your desk and move around the room, even with a subwoofer attached. I liked them, but ended up returning them. Decided to try the NAD D 3020 amp with a pair of bookshelf speakers I had. Same amount of money, but a much larger soundstage with the bookshelf speakers (Boston Acoustics A25s). Sound easily fills the whole room. The bigger sound stage and greater versatility of the amp/ bookshelf combo (I can always upgrade the speakers later) was a no brainer for me.

Pros: Small, Beautiful, 3 year warranty

Cons: Small soundstage. Good for nearfield listening only in my opinion. Subwoofer is not muted when using the headphone jack.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers! Very easy to set up and use. The quality of the build is excellent as is the sound. I use them in a room that is 25'x11' and the sound fills the room. Connected to a subwoofer which is shared with another receiver and it is more than enough to satisfy your listening experience.

Pros: Great sound from small speakers!

Cons: The port on the speaker is for a mini USB and not the regular size. Not a huge problem though.

These are great. USB, Bluetooth, and multiple audio inputs, all active. I have two computers hooked to them, one via USB and the other via line in, and I occasionally can send something from my phone, no switching or confusion. And they sounds good.

Amazing sound

Frank from Central, PA on 3/22/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are amazing speakers for being so small. The bass is more than adequate and the mids and highs are great. I steam CDs to them with an iPod Touch and have no problems. They are used in a bedroom on Definitive Technology Prostand 1000 stands. While these stands are made for other specific speakers, these mount easily on the larger of the plates supplied with the stands, and the furnished mounting screws are a perfect fit in the threaded socket on the bottom of each speaker. Quick and easy with very good stability. Placed along a wall they provide a small and out of the way footprint, fully controlled by the iPod kept at beside. When the Bluetooth connection is cut off via the iPod the speakers soon go to a low power standby mode. They are quite versatile and can be set up to work in a variety of other ways with furnished interconnects, all of good quality.

Pros: Great Sound. A Bluetooth source is all you need. Can be easily moved around. Very well made.

Cons: None.

Exceptional Sound

Ron from Kitty Hawk, NC on 2/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Long story short, the Audioengine HD 3 is quality product. The soundstage is amazing considering the size if the speakers. The speakers are so easy to connect to Bluetooth and they look great. For me it's all about the sound and the HD 3 delivers. I am using as a pair of mini bookshelf speakers and am very pleased with the overall performance. Would highly recommend.

Pros: Exceptional sound, easy to connect to Bluetooth, easy to use, look great

Cons: none

Small speakers that sound big

Francis from Ft Collins, CO on 2/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding desktop speakers. The quality of sound is excellent and accurate with any music type- I listen to jazz, rock, classical and even punk. The base is pretty formidable on these small guys (and they are small, which is what you want for a desk; they sound much bigger). I attached a small subwoofer and set the frequency to pick up only when a large amount of bass needs generated, and they can completely fill my midsize room, home office. They are so loud and powerful, however, that they may be overwhelming for an office setting or a more crowded home (I can hear a small amount of bass thump a few rooms away). Bluetooth works terrific. While I'm sure some super critics may criticize the data transfer of bluetooth, I don't notice the difference and, in fact, have heard clarity of the instruments not noticeable in my audiophile speakers and music cache. My ideal setup is to have my MacBook blue toothed in with Amazon Unlimited, and an Echo plugged in. Can keep music going all day long and still have the freedom of a laptop computer. Fit and finish was exceptional- great attention to detail. Highly recommend.

Pros: Small size Terrific and accurate sound Decent bass Bluetooth with options to plug traditional components in

Cons: May actually be too big of sound for small room/shared office No remote control, so need to be near speakers to control volume

Amazing Sound From Small Speakers

Henry from Dublin, OH on 1/12/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a proud owner of the Audioengine HD3 (Walnut) speakers. It started because I am tired of listening to portable bluetooth speakers like the Bose Mini. True they're convenient and good for what they are, but I think they lack the depth, sound quality and detailed imaging. I missed the great sound of the stereo systems of yesteryear. I wanted something that sounds awesome, provides detailed imaging, is modest in size, and simple to setup. Audioengine to the rescue. Until I received these speakers, I had never owned or listened to Audioengine speakers before. I picked these speakers based on online reviews. The HD3's are small and solid. I rank the build quality as exceptional. Setup took 5 minutes. Don't let their diminutive size fool you. They sound much, much bigger. Their audio quality is incredible. They have a warm, and very crisp, clean sound. Imaging is outstanding and they do get surprisingly loud for such a small package. No distortion even at the highest volume levels. I like to listen to Classical music, Jazz, and 60s Psychedelic Rock and the HD3's handled every instrument and note cleanly and accurately. The speakers by themselves are not for bassheads. They do provide excellent bass for their size, but you will need to connect a powered subwoofer to get those really deep notes. Overall, I am very impressed. They have exceeded my expectations and are well worth the price. Give them a try. I think you'll be pleasantly amazed.

Pros: Amazing Crisp, Clean Sound. Detailed Imaging, Small size, Simple setup, Flexible connectivity, Exceptional Build Quality

Cons: Baseheads will need a powered subwoofer. No optical audio input. No Remote Control

Full rich spacious sound for small speakers

Michael from Prescott, AZ on 12/27/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must admit this is the first review I have ever written. I love classical music and motion picture soundtracks. My computer is hooked up to my home theater sound system but for simple listening like instructional videos online my wife just wanted small desk top speakers she can turn on, so I bought the HD3 speakers. After hooking them up I turned them on and What A Sound! The full rich spacious sound that came out of these speakers blew me off my chair. I did not expect that sound quality to come out of these small speakers. As always Crutchfield's service was wonderful.

Pros: If you primarily listen to desk top speakers at your computer desk just add the subwoofer for extreme bottom end and who needs a full blown stereo system in your office.

Cons: none

Product Research

Audioengine HD3 Powered Speakers: The Audioengine's HD3's speaker cabinets, drivers, innovative bass port design, amplifier, and passive crossover network are critically tuned together, providing a more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers & external amplifiers. The HD3 is not a "box-built" system with off-the-shelf parts, but includes custom-designed components constructed to Audioengine's specifications for high quality, high performance sound.

Two-Way Driver Design: The Audioengine HD3 employs a two-way driver design. Each speaker is outfitted with a 0.75" silk dome tweeter and a 2.75" kevlar cone woofer for a wide stereo soundstage.

  • Silk Dome Tweeter: The HD3 uses an audiophile-quality, ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response.
  • Kevlar-Woven Woofer: The woofer used is a Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surround. Kevlar is obviously very strong, which means the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels.

Built-In Amplifier: The amplifier in the Audioengine HD3 is located in the left speaker and are a conservatively-rated class A/B analog monoblock design. This is a more traditional speaker/amplifier configuration which provides excellent quality audio and greater flexibility. All circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection. The built-in power amplifier saves space & eliminates the need to connect Audioengine HD3 to a stereo receiver or external power amp.

Note: The included 6.5' speaker wire connects from the left speaker's binding-post terminals to the right speaker's binding post terminals to power the right speaker.

Hand-Built Cabinets: The Audioengine HD3's speaker cabinets are hand-built with furniture-grade finishes. The HD3 cabinets are available in several handsome finishes, including walnut and cherry veneers as well as satin black and white paint; offering a wide choice for complementing room furnishings. Also included are detachable grills that add further aesthetic advantages as they are firmly held in place with hidden neodymium magnets for a clean look.

Front-Slot Port: One of the reasons the Audioengine HD3 has such great bass response for a compact speaker is its slot-ported cabinet. Each cabinet features a rear-firing slot-port that has been specifically tuned for accurate bass down to 65Hz. The result is low end with minimal audible air turbulence, so you can use the Audioengine HD3 speakers with or without a separate subwoofer.

24-bit Upsampling DAC: The HD3's built-in Bluetooth receiver and USB input both utilize the AKM AK4396A DAC, widely known for its low-noise and high-fidelity. The AK4396A is used as an upsampling DAC and will pad all bit depths to 24-bits, achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the AK4396A, the fact that digital signal is upsampled to 24-bits, as well as the added benefit of onboard triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering, the HD3 Bluetooth implementation presents impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics with a noticeable improvement over many other Bluetooth devices.

Bluetooth Music Streaming The Audioengine HD3 incorporates built-in Bluetooth (version 4.0) for wireless music streaming of stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows PC/Phone, Mac computer/laptop, and more to the powered speaker system. You will continue to control your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

  • SBC, AAC, & aptX Codecs: The HD3 powered speakers feature aptX coding (for Android) which is an advanced Bluetooth audio codec with "CD-quality" like sound. And even if your phone or tablet doesn't have aptX, the HD3 Bluetooth solution is backwards-compatible with SBC and AAC (for iPhone) codecs, so you can wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device and still enjoy all your music.
  • 100' Wireless Range: Most Bluetooth products have very limited range (only up to 30'), typically within just one room. But with careful signal management circuitry and antenna tuning, the HD3 offers a superior solution that has up to 3x the range (up to 100') of standard Bluetooth for multiroom use, with no degradation in audio quality.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Audioengine HD3.

microUSB Input: The Audioengine HD3 is fitted with a microUSB input that can be used to playback music files from your Windows PC or Mac computer (no separate USB driver necessary). Simply use the included microUSB-to-USB cable to connect the HD3 to a free USB port on your computer. The microUSB input bypasses your computer's built-in low-quality DAC and utilizes the HD'3 24-bit upsampling DAC for a high-end listening experience. The Audioengine HD3's microUSB port supports music files up to 24-bit/44.1kHz or 48kHz.

Audiophile-Quality Headphone Amp: The Audioengine HD3 features an audiophile-quality, dedicated headphone amplifier with front-panel headphone output. The HD3's high-performance headphone amplifier is based on the OPA2134 low-noise opamp. This amp is able to provide low-impedance, high-fidelity audio and a 2-volt output which easily drives a wide range of headphones

Dual Aux Inputs: The HD3 is equipped with two analog Aux inputs. There is a stereo minijack (3.5mm) input and a stereo RCA input for connecting analog audio devices.

Variable Audio Output: The Audioengine HD3 includes a variable stereo preamp audio output so you can connect a powered subwoofer (such as the Audioengine S8; sold separately), other Audioengine powered speakers, or an Audioengine wireless adapter (772W3; sold separately) to daisy-chaining music to other systems around the house. This output is variable (adjustable) so the volume level can be controlled from the HD3.

Front-Panel Rotary Knob: The HD3's front-panel rotary knob allows you to turn the speaker system on or off, as well as adjust the volume level up or down.

Power Requirements: The Audioengine HD3's left speaker plugs into an AC power outlet using the included AC power adapter and AC power cord.

Break-in Period: The speaker will sound great out of the box & will get better over time. No need to do anything else, but listen to them. Do give them at least 30-50 hours of break-in time before doing any critical listening.

Great-sounding, and a real problem solver

Written by Zak Billmeier, Video Producer, on 10/22/2018 9:12:00 AM

I love the way Audioengine speakers sound, so I knew I was getting the sound quality I wanted right off the bat. What sealed the deal for me on the HD3 speakers was their compact size, and the fact that they really helped de-clutter my desk. With a DAC and a built-in headphone amp, they are a real problem solver for any small space. I recommend the stands that go with them because they angle the speakers toward your head.

Close choice between these and the A5+. However, the primary use was as desktop computer speakers in a relatively small room. I use an Audioengine B1 to stream ripped CDs from Apple iPhone, iPod or MacBook to an integrated amp and the B1 works flawlessly and has a fantastic range. These speakers use the same electronics as the B1 and I'll stream to them in the bedroom, basement, back porch or wherever I choose to set them up. A lot easier than running wires all over from the amp. They won't sound like my Klipsch Fortes but then I can't simply pick those up and do a quick move. [ John F.  Mar 09, 2017 ]

there is no provision for adding a subwoofer. The only way I could see to accomplish that would to be to add a passive crossover upstream of the input and divert the Low frequency stream to a separate subwoofer. That would be a faie amount of work. [ THOMAS A  Mar 14, 2017 ]
