About the Cambridge Audio AXA35

The centerpiece of a high-fidelity sound system

I like an effective, versatile stereo system in my living room, and the Cambridge Audio AXA35 is the type of component I like to build around. It's classy-looking and easy to operate. It matches well with an efficient set of bookshelf speakers like the Cambridge Audio SX50 and provides plenty of power to fill small- to mid-sized room with beautiful music.

The AXA35 offers plenty of analog inputs for old-school source components, like Cambridge's AXC35 CD player, and there's a built-in phono stage if you're a vinyl junkie like me.

Product Research

35 Watts x 2 Channel: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 integrated amplifier delivers 35 watts x 2 channels into 8-ohms @ 20-20kHz with 0.15% THD.

Tone & Balance Control: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 offers Bass & Treble control, along with balance adjustment. You'll be able to adjust Bass (100Hz) & Treble (10kHz) from -10 to +10dB, as well as adjust the balance in sound output between the connected left and right speakers.

Line-Level RCA Inputs: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 integrated amplifier is outfitted with four line-level analog RCA outputs for connection of external audio source devices - such as a CD player, tuner, tape-deck, Bluetooth adapter, or network streaming device (all sold separately).

Phono Input: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 has a built-in Phono preamplifier (Phono Stage) with a rear-panel phono input and ground terminal. The phono input supports turntables outfitted with Phono Cartridges of the Moving Magnet (MM) or high output Moving Coil (MC) type (between 2-6mV output and 30-50k load impedance). The Ground terminals on both the AXA35 integrated amp and your turntable should be connected (where possible) with a ground wire for lowest noise/hum pickup.

Note: Low output Moving Coil cartridge types (<1mV and usually 10-1000 ohm load impedance) cannot be directly connected to the phono input and will require an external phono preamplifier (sold separately) compatible with low output Moving Coil cartridges.

Front-Panel Aux Input: The front-panel Aux input consists of a 3.5mm minijack for connection of a portable audio device with an analog line-level or headphone output. When a device is plugged into the front-panel Aux input, the integrated amplifier automatically switches to the Aux input. Because the output level of many portable audio players is low, the AXA35 automatically adds 10dB to the Aux input's current volume setting.

Record Output: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 integrated amplifier features a stereo RCA record output for connecting a CD recorder, tape deck or other compatible recording device. The record output provides a constant line level output that does not fluctuate with the volume of the integrated amplifier.

Note: The Record output cannot be used as a preamp output or subwoofer output.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 is equipped with a set of binding post terminals for connecting a single pair of loudspeakers. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). Plastic caps need to be removed from the binding post terminals in order to use banana plugs. Use only loudspeakers with a nominal impedance rating of 8-ohms.

1/4" Headphone Jack: The front-panel 1/4" headphone jack allows for connection of a set of stereo headphones with an impedance between 32 and 600-ohms. Connecting a set of headphones will automatically mute the integrated amplifier's speaker outputs.

USB Charging Port: There is a USB-A (5V/500mA) port located on the back of the AXA35 integrated amplifier that can be used to charge your smartphone or tablet, or supply power to a Bluetooth adapter.

Note: This USB port does not support audio playback.

Front-Panel Display: The integrated amplifier's front-panel display indicates selected input source and menu selections, as well as volume, tone, and balance levels.

Simple Controls: The Cambridge Audio AXA35 offers front-panel and remote control. Front-panel controls include a rotary volume dial along with power, source, and menu buttons. The included IR remote control provides full wireless operation of the integrated amplifier.

Customer Q&A

7 questions already asked

Will this work well with speakers with a 150 rms rating?
[ Paul  Sep 22, 2021 ]
1 answer
I would look more to the sensitivity rating (db) of your speaker and impedance (ohms) vs the average power handling to determine if the Cambridge amp can do a good job driving your speaker. 150 watts RMS is your speaker average power handling and it can handle peaks up to 300 watts. This Cambridge amp is 35 watts per channel so unlikely to reach the 150 watts even at 2 ohms so you should be fine.

What's the best way to connect optical audio from TV?
[ Nick  Jan 08, 2021 ]

Nick, you will need to buy a digital to analog audio converter to do this - search for that on google and you will get options. They are fairly inexpensive.
[ STEVEN MICHAEL  Jan 09, 2021 ]
For this amp, you will need a DAC. I am using a Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100. The TV optical goes into the DAC and L/R audio comes out and into the amp.
[ JEFF  Jan 08, 2021 ]
i have been using the Schiit Modi 3 DAC for connecting optical from TV. Any DAC with optical input should work.

can it be used with elac unifi ub5 4 ohm speaker?
[ Bakshi  Sep 01, 2020 ]

No. I downloaded the manual for tis receiver. It says to use 8 ohm speakers.
[ Terry  Sep 04, 2020 ]
Should I be concerned with the 35 watts per channel?
[ Tim  Nov 27, 2019 ]

Hi Tim, thank you for your question. The power rating on the Cambridge Audio AXA35 is on the lower side, but the power output and capability of this amp is extremely clean, and efficient. This would be best paired with a set of efficient bookshelf speakers. I would suggest speakers with a sensitivity of 90dB and up for optimal performance. Chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, if you would like to discuss a speaker recommendation.

It's as pure a 35W as you'll find, probably a little conservative on the power rating. Just make sure you're using effecient speakers to get the most out of the 35W. Anything less than 88db sensitivity rated speakers and you might want more power. I was running 90db speakers and it fine.

Was wondering how the product is holding up and if it lives up to the sound expectations?. I noticed cruthfield has only sold one. Ive read reviews online that are positive but the dependability was not so great from other reviewers online. Please advise. Thankyou

I did not like the sound And it did not have the power I wanted so I send it back and get something else
[ William  Nov 08, 2019 ]
It's still a relatively new product so reliability as a whole won't be known for years. Given the track record or Cambridge gear it should provide many years of enjoyment. It's an excellent amp for efficient speakers... say 87db+. I have it paired with speakers 90db and it's a full and warm sounding amp and gets as loud as you'll ever want to play music.

i bought the AXC35 cd player from you, thinking to match this amp with the player, but can i connect my sub woofer to the amp?

can I connect my Sub woofer to this amp?
[ JOHN  Jul 29, 2019 ]
1 answer
Not unless your subwoofer has speaker level inputs. The Cambridge integrated amp does not have a subwoofer or preamp outputs.
