It does one job very well

Most manufacturers are jamming more functions into every component they make. The Cambridge AXC35 is designed to do one thing — play CDs and make them sound amazing.

It features a Wolfson digital-to-analog converter and stereo RCA line output, so you can feed signal directly to an amp like the Cambridge AXA35. Or you can use the coaxial digital audio output to connect a high-quality Cambridge DAC.

The AXC35 plays audio CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs. You can tailor your listening experience by using one of the component's playback modes: repeat one, repeat all, random, or programmable memory.

Disc Compatibility: The Cambridge Audio AXC35 compact disc player supports playback of CD audio discs, as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs with MP3 and WMA audio files. It even supports gapless playback of your compatible discs.

Wolfson DAC: The Cambridge Audio AXC35 compact disc player utilizes a Wolfson Microelectronics WM8524 digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to convert digital information stored on a CD into an analog sound signal. This high-quality DAC supports up to 24-bit/192kHz, 2ch stereo PCM.

Stereo Analog Outputs: The AXC35 compact disc player is outfitted with stereo analog audio outputs for connecting to your stereo receiver or integrated amplifier.

Coaxial Digital Output: There is coaxial (RCA) digital output that allows you to record from a CD to a digital format or even connect to a standalone DAC when you want to improve your sound quality even more.

Front-Panel Display: The front-panel display indicates disc CD, CD-R, and CD-RW playback information; such as track number, total number tracks, time elapsed, and total length of disc.

Simple Controls: The Cambridge Audio AXC35 compact disc player offers front-panel and remote control. Front-panel controls included Power On/Off, Open/Close, Play/Pause, Stop, Previous/Next Track, and Fast Forward/Rewind. The IR wireless remote provides all the same controls as the front-panel; plus additional controls such as Random, Repeat (One/All), Program (20-tracks), and Direct Track Access (0-9 numeric keypad). The remote also provides wireless control for certain functions of a Cambridge Audio integrated amplifier or stereo receiver; these functions include Source Selection, Volume Up/Down, and Mute.

Auto Power Down (APD): After 20 minutes of no audio playback and inactivity, the compact disc player will automatically go into Standby mode.

Q
Will this unit connect to a Yamaha A-S301 Amplifier?
[ MARIE  Jul 24, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
Yes that Yamaha integrated amp has several inputs you could use to connect that Cambridge Audio cd player.

Q
Can it play multiple CDs at a time?
[ Patty  Jun 30, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
Greetings Patty. The Cambridge Audio AXC35 is a single disc player. We carry two 6 disc players from Onkyo, and Integra. Onkyo is a DX C390, and the Integra is CDC-3.4.

Q
Is this MQA CD compatible?
[ Inquiring Mind  May 26, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
It should playback the content, yes. To get the most out of an MQA-CD, you would want and MQA enabled decoder/DAC as well.

Q
Does anyone know if the remote from the axr100 will control the axc35?
[ richard  Feb 20, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
Not sure, however, I believe the opposite is true. I have the AXC 35 & the remote has controls for an amplifier included on it. I would guess the answer to your question would be "yes." Look at your remote and see if there are buttons that control a CD player!
[ RICHARD  Feb 23, 2022 ]
Q
How many disc does it hold?
[ Gail  Dec 20, 2021 ]

The AXC35 holds but a single disc. (Personally, I can't recommend multi-disc players; they add another level of complexity that can - and does - go wrong).

Any issues playing MP3 files burned to a CD?
[ L. CURTIS  Jul 04, 2021 ]
5 answers
A
I have only burned aiff music files to a CD; they play back fine. The AXC35 documentation says that mp3 and WAV files should play back OK, but I have had no occasion to try them.
[ Ken  Jul 06, 2021 ]
A
I need to edit my previous answer. I was using the remote from a Cambridge receiver. It will control the CD player, but has additional buttons that do not apply to the CD player. For example, the menu, bass and treble controls I incorrectly referred to as non-functional. They do work properly with the receiver.
[ CAM  Jul 04, 2021 ]
A
I just tried a very old CD of MP3 music files. No problems with playback. The specs should show all supported formats. But, the volume, treble and bass controls on my remote do not function.
[ CAM  Jul 04, 2021 ]
A
I cannot answer this question since I have not tried to play MP3 formats. So far I am satisfied with the unit. Ask me in 5 years how I feel about it.
[ SCOTT  Jul 04, 2021 ]
A
Haven't tried. Can't say.

Q
Is the digital output through a toslink cable?
[ Woody  May 21, 2021 ]

A
Nope. Only through a cable/spdif. That's how I use it. The DAC in the CX61 amp sounds slightly better, IMHO.

A
No. Digital Coax

Q
This unit has been out of stock everywhere. Was there some kind of manufacturing or design issue that took it off the market? I'd like to buy it, if I could find it and feel confident.
[ STUART  Apr 24, 2021 ]
11 answers
A
There has been no problem with my unit thus far. I've had it over a year and I enjoy it very much. Very solid and well built. I use it on a vintage '69 Samsui Receiver. In recent years, CD players in general have become a niche item and it's been more difficult to find since the pandemic
[ Paul  Apr 29, 2021 ]
A
I needed a simple straightforward CD player and this Cambridge model has functioned admirably. Not aware of any design or manufacturing issues with production. My best guess is the pandemic affecting either manufacturing and/or shipping of the units. In some reviews I read before purchasing mine a couple owners were concerned with how fast the CD drawer opens. It does open fast but has caused no problems for me. You might check a reseller or something like eBay. Good luck. It's a very solid piece of equipment...
[ MICHAEL  Apr 28, 2021 ]
A
I've had mine since November and it works beautifully. It feels very solid and well-built.
[ MAKIE  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
I must admit that received a unit that was defective. I was quite surprised knowing about Cambridge reputation. I was sent a replacement and haven't any issues. I added an extra year to the manufacture two year warranty. You just register the unit with Cambridge directly.
[ FRANCO  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
I don't know about any issues with the AXC35. All I can say as an owner is that it produces outstanding sound with my system. The AXC35 in combination with my Sony amplifier, Elac speakers and Sony subwoofer lets me hear details on CDs that I've never heard before. Bands sound like they're right there. And, the player seems built like a tank.
[ MARK  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
I have not had any problem and enjoy the quality of the player. Maybe its being discontinued because it has no bells and whistles. Which is exactly why I purchased it - I like the quality and glad that's where the priority is for this player - instead of adding extra unnecessary features for marketing purposes.
[ ALAN  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
Hi Stuart! I don't know of any issue that has kept it off the market. Sorry you can't find it. I did have a problem the first couple times I used it. It would freeze up in the middle of tracks and I would have to press play 2 times to get it playing again. However, after an extensive break in period, it now plays flawlessly. I really love it and the sound quality is top notch. I really hope you find one soon. I have seen where Cambridge is making some new models so they may have already discontinued this one. I really do recommend it!
[ GARY  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
Must be the chip shortage that everyone is struggling with. I have one and works great maybe thats why its sold out
[ AS  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
Have not had any problems yet. Use the unit quite a bit with no problems
[ ALTON  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
I can't imagine why it's unavailable. I love my unit. It performs perfectly & sounds excellent! I would contact Cambridge Audio directly for an answer as to why its currently unavailable.
[ RICHARD  Apr 27, 2021 ]
A
I purchased 6 months ago. Unit is fine. As to it being out of stock, I assume thats because of Covid affecting production not because of problems with the unit.
[ DENIS  Apr 27, 2021 ]
Q
What material is the front panel made from? Metal or plastic?
[ Joe  Apr 13, 2021 ]
3 answers
A
The front panel is metal .
[ CHARLES  Apr 14, 2021 ]
A
Difficult to tell but a magnet wouldn't stick so I assume it's plastic. Very high quality though.
[ ED  Apr 14, 2021 ]
A
The front panel is plastic. The cover on top and sides is metal.
[ Ken  Apr 13, 2021 ]
Q
Can you use it with an amplifier with built know DAC?
[ Stephen  Apr 01, 2021 ]
2 answers
A
Yes. If you want to use the DAC in your amp instead of the AXC35 built in DAC then connect the CD player to your amp using a Digital Coax cable.
[ JASON  Jun 09, 2021 ]
A
The AXC35 has a digital co-axial output that can connect to a separate DAC. The AXC25 does not.
[ Ken  Apr 13, 2021 ]

Q
What is Wolfson DAC ?
[ SCOTT  Dec 01, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
DAC stands for "digital-analog converter" and is the electronic component that translates the bits and bytes on the disc into an analog signal that comes through your speakers. My understanding is that this unit has a pretty good one. I purchased this Cambridge Audio player to replace a 20-year-old Sony unit and it sounds great. Hope that's helpful.
[ ANDREW  Dec 01, 2020 ]
A
The DAC is a small chipset that is set on a circuit board, used to convert digital to analog, thus the DAC acronym. Some audio gear use a DAC made by Wolfson. For more information do an internet search on Wolfson DAC.

Q
Is this rack mountable?
[ Mark  Nov 23, 2020 ]
3 answers
A
I don't think it is. One other thing though. I didn't realize it at the time I purchased this item, but it doesn't have a built in DAC. If you don't already have one, you are just getting a CD transport. Without a DAC, which is the critical part of processing digital to analog to make music sound the way the artist meant it to sound when recorded. You might still want one. Don't get it wrong. Cambridge makes a great CD player for the money. The best I've ever owned. There is less expensive model by Cambridge that has a DAC. I would take a second look and check it out. I don't think any Cambridge is rack mountable. You can always check with the company to get an answer from the horses' mouth. Good luck!!
[ HORACE  Nov 23, 2020 ]
A
The unit I received does not appear to have the screw holes near the front to attach the rack ears. This is what I'm used to seeing on equipment that can be put on a shelf or rack mounted. However, there are a number of rack shelves that would work fine, I've also used these. For example, go to www.crutchfield.com and search on rack shelves. Since the CD player weighs a little less than 10 pounds, you should have many choices. You can get a solid shelf; however, I would recommend one with holes in case you want to support higher powered equipment which requires ventilation.
[ CAM  Nov 23, 2020 ]
A
That would be a negative.
[ Joel  Nov 23, 2020 ]
Q
Does this unit come in black?
[ STEVEN D  Nov 15, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
Don't think it comes in black. Most Cambridge products come in silver. Just a limited few come in black. You can always check the Cambridge website for more information. They have a toll free phone number listed on their website too.
[ HORACE  Nov 23, 2020 ]
A
As far as I know, it does not come in black, but as an afterthought, you might consider a unit by NAD I upgraded from a Cambridge to an NAD and heard a big difference.
[ Carl  Nov 15, 2020 ]
Q
is it better to connect this CD player to my receiver via optical or RCA connection?
[ STEPHEN  Oct 14, 2020 ]
7 answers
A
Just to be clear, the AXC35 has no optical out. Look at the picture of the backside of the unit. It is a cable/spdif out. But, depending on your receiver's DAC, it could be better to go that way. Try both ways and see which you prefer would be my advice.
[ TOBIN  Jun 10, 2021 ]
A
There is no toslink digital output. Only coax/ spdif
[ TOBIN  Jun 10, 2021 ]
A
Optical is much better. You will notice a big difference. Good question.
[ HORACE  Nov 23, 2020 ]
A
I have RCA connections and have not had any problems; however, the cambridge is hooked up to a 15yr old macintosh ma6500 integrated amp.
[ LEWIS  Oct 15, 2020 ]
A
I would use a high end rca
[ Carl  Oct 14, 2020 ]
A
I use RCA.
[ NORMAN  Oct 14, 2020 ]
A
It depends on if you want to use the DAC on the CD player or the DAC on your receiver. Personally, I connect to the CXA61 receiver via optical because I think the quality of the DAC might be better in the CXA61 than in the AXC35. You could try both ways and see which sounds better to you.

Q
Will this play SACD's?
[ Eddie  Jul 26, 2020 ]
4 answers
A
It will play a Hybrid SACD and they sound much better then red book cd's
[ LARRY  Jan 04, 2021 ]
A
No you will need a SACD player.
[ PHILIP  Aug 11, 2020 ]
A
Hi Eddie, I don't know. I don't have any SACD's. It works great with all of my cd's. Including the ones I purchased back in the late 1980's. You can always call Cambridge Audio and ask them. Their phone number for the U.S. is on their website. I have the original Whitney Houston CD that was released in 1985. The AXC35 make it sound like I've never heard it before. Buying this unit will not be a bad decision. (My opinion). This is the best sounding cd player I have ever owned. Good luck! Regards
[ HORACE  Aug 11, 2020 ]
A
No -- The AXC35 does not play SACD disks.
