About the Cambridge Audio Minx Min 12

Dave Bar

A fantastic little speaker just got even better

We've always loved the positively huge sound that comes from Cambridge Audio's tiny Minx Min Series speakers. Seriously, speakers this small shouldn't sound this good! So when Cambridge announced the Minx Min 12, the latest version of their little mighty mites, we knew good things were in store. At just over 3" cubed, these remarkably small speakers will instantly fill your living space with a tonal presence that has to be heard to be believed. Whether you're looking to maximize your music or movie experience or add depth to your favorite TV shows and sports events, the newly refined Minx Min 12 is waiting to show you what you've been missing.

Note: We highly recommend using these satellites with a powered subwoofer for full-range sound.

Minx Min 12 with tabletop stand

Pictured with a tabletop stand (available seperately), Cambridge Audio's tiny Minx Min 12 can deliver detailed, spacious sound almost anywhere you put it.

The "BMR" advantage for natural, spacious sound

The Minx Min 12 rewrites the rulebook of what's possible from miniature speakers thanks to BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) technology. BMR drivers use a flat speaker surface that combines the traditional "pistonic" movement of speaker cones with a "bending-wave" movement to create sound. It's what allows the Min 12 to cover a much wider frequency range than comparably sized speakers. You'll also experience much broader sound dispersion across your entire room. Plus, the compact, acoustically damped cabinet offers extreme rigidity for pure, clean sound no matter how intense your music or movies get.

What makes the 4th generation BMR driver special

The Minx Min 12's latest 4th generation BMR driver features more rigid construction than previous designs for even better dispersion. That extra-wide dispersion means you can put your speakers where you want and still enjoy deep, spacious stereo or surround sound throughout your entire room. This makes Minx Min speakers ideal for room layouts where your speaker placement options are less than optimal. The BMR driver also features a larger magnet structure for greater efficiency, and increased driver excursion for improved bass handling, better integration with a subwoofer, and richer sound.

Speakers that fit your lifestyle

Naturally, you want your speakers to fit into your home, rather than having to design your living space around your system. That's why the compact Minx Min 12 satellites include a keyhole slot wall mounting bracket. They can also be swivel-mounted to your wall, placed on stands, or positioned on a tabletop using optional hardware. You can mix and match between colors, or go for the larger Minx Min 22 models in the front of your room with Minx Min 12s in the back.

Features

BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) Technology: The Cambridge Audio Minx MIN12 satellite speaker features a single 2.25" BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) driver. The Cambridge Audio BMR driver utilizes patented 'bending wave' principles normally seen in advanced flat-panel speakers, combined with piston-movement (backwards and forwards) like in a traditional speaker design. This type of design provides the Minx satellite speaker with a much wider frequency response and deeper and more powerful bass frequencies, plus incredibly spacious sound. The BMR driver design also adds value by delivering a much broader sound dispersion across the entire room, avoiding the typical "sweet spot" pitfall, for a more enveloping sound.

Acoustically Damped Cabinet: The MIN12 satellite speaker employs an acoustically damped thermo-polymer cabinet to prevent distortion caused by resonance and vibration. Its acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure delivers greater detail and accuracy.

Binding Posts: The Cambridge Audio Minx MIN12 satellite speaker is equipped with a pair of binding post terminals. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, and spade-connectors. The satellite speaker's binding post terminals can be removed to allow use of banana plugs (single only). The binding post terminals simply pull out of the back of the speaker, which allows access to banana connector inputs.

Mounting Options: The Cambridge Audio Minx MIN12 satellite speaker can be table-top mounted, wall mounted, or placed on a floor-standing speaker stand.

  • Table-Top Mount: The Minx MIN12 satellite speaker comes with four self-adhesive rubber feet to simply place the speaker securely on a table or shelf. There is also an optional Minx Table-Top Stand (779MTSA, sold separately) available, which allows placement on a desk, table, or shelf.
  • Wall Mount: The MIN12 features a rear-mounted 6mm threaded insert which allows you to wall-mount the speaker using the included keyhole-slot adapter, the Cambridge Audio Minx Wall Bracket (779MPWM, sold separately), or other optional wall-mount bracket (sold separately).
  • Speaker Stand: The 6mm threaded insert on the back of the satellite speaker can be used to attach the speaker to the Cambridge Audio Minx Floor Stands (779MFSB, sold separately).

Q
Could I use just one of these as a computer speaker?
andres  Jun 28, 2021
3 answers
A
You will need a power amplifier and a DAC to use the speakers in a computer setup. i.e. computer -> DAC -> amplifier -> speakers. You cannot connect the speakers directly to a computer in the same way you could with a Logitech setup.
matthew  Jun 28, 2021
A
I'm afraid not. You need a speaker with an amplifier built in.
robert c  Jun 28, 2021
A
I believe you could as long as you have the right connections.

If you have an amp to go with it yes. You will not be able to connect them directly to the computer.

I imagine you could use it with with some type of custom set-up but if you're asking if you can use these speakers right out of the box as plug and play directly from a computer, the answer is no.

Would these speakers be suitable for surround and rear-surround use? I purchased a pair C46 to use at Atmos speakers and am thinking I could fill out the surround speakers with Cambridge Audio...

This little speaker will be good fit.

yes you can. That is how I use them. My wife, who is not so much a sound person perked up and commented on the added sound once I hooked them up.
robert  May 05, 2021

Yes, these are awesome little speakers. You can hear the bullets ringing and birds chirping. This is the second time that I purchase these speakers.

Yes definitely! I bought them exactly for this reason and am pretty pleased with them overall.. Keep in mind that these are NOT full range speakers that are going to produce deep bass. You'll need a dedicated subwoofer as you will with most home theater applications.. and these are definitely NOT really suitable for LCR speakers in my opinion. But they have a small footprint and are very unobtrusive looking and produce decent enough sound quality for a surround and Atmos setup. They also can play at a good level without distorting. Hope this helps.
darren  May 06, 2021
A
I use them for the 2 back speakers and they are awesome. In my case I have the MINX22 in the front.
david  May 05, 2021
A
I would think so, but keep in mind that they are small speakers.
gerardo  May 05, 2021
A
They work well as a surround sound speaker. I have a smaller living room so that may be a factor. If you have a large space you may be lacking in mid base.

Q
I have a pioneer sx-1050 for my receiver, would these be a good speaker to use with it?
nick  Oct 11, 2020

A
I use them as PC monitor speakers and they are great in this or a small room application. They do need the addition of a separate bass speaker(s) if you want any bass at all. I have been very happy with the clean sound.
robert  Nov 05, 2020
A
These are a good speaker if you don't have space for anything better. They require very little power to perform as expected. I'm sure that receiver would be more than enough power. You will want a subwoofer to get full range sound either way.
john  Nov 05, 2020
Q
Cambridge Audio Minx Min 12 how do I work out the frequency that corresponds to -6db for setting my sub up? CA say that don't have the curve I need to refer to: frequency against response.
john  Sep 25, 2020
1 answer
A
Without a frequency response curve from the manufacturer the easiest way would be by ear. Select a music passage you know and play it using different settings until you are happy with the sound. OR The hard way. Get a calibrated audio signal generator and calibrated microphone or sound meter and manually plot the acoustic output energy from the speaker versus the input electrical signal level to the amplifier for the frequency range of interest. If you go this way you are well along to having a full up audio laboratory.

Q
I have an onkyo TX-NR656 receiver can these speakers be used as height speakers from the ceiling for Dolby atmos?
robert  Feb 01, 2018
1 answer
A
They sure can work with that receiver and ceiling mount brackets so they point down so they can be used for Dolby Atmos! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Q
I I checked the Minx Min 12 I received from Crutchfield with a VOM and they read 64K ohms plus, or across the terminals so they MUST have a high pass blocking capacitor in series. SO it appears they CAN be powered with an amp THAT DOES NOT have bass management for satellites. Can anyone from the Cambridge team confirm?

Hey Ken! I run my Mind Minis through a Yamaha R-S700 100wpc amp without any issues, but your definitely gonna have to run a subwoofer with the minis, because you will not get the bass.. I love these speakers. Hope this helps..

I would think so I have the speakers located at the furthest end of my house and I don't have to turn the volume pass 5.
joseph  Sep 20, 2016
A
No. It's a small speaker for small rooms. They sound nice for their size but the laws of physics still apply -- two tiny speakers won't fill a medium-sized hall with sound.
jonathan j  Sep 20, 2016
A
I would use something a bit more robust. I have mine hooked up to a Yamaha R-S700 100 wpc with a sub woofer. Being the Minx Min are More for highs than lows, look into the next model up being it has a midrange and a tweeter all in one.. Hope this helps

richard  Jul 25, 2016
A
200.00 for the pair. They sound great. I have a Yamaha sub woofer from my previous speakers and it makes them sound much larger than they are.
robert  Jul 25, 2016
Q
Can I use these as primary speakers on a stereo/turntable with amplifier? Or will i need a subwoofer?
c  Nov 27, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings C, and thank you for your question. If your amplifier supports a subwoofer, you can give the Cambridge Audio Minx Min a shot. They are very small, and not really designed to play a lower tone, so bass production will not be good. If your amplifier does not support a sub you can add on later, you might want a bigger speaker than the Minx Min.

Q
will these accept banana plugs?
richard  Nov 09, 2017

A
Yep, I have them set up that way, no problem at all.
michael  Nov 10, 2017
A
No
dave  Nov 09, 2017
A
The spec says they do. Looking at mine I think if you remove the screw terminal then a hole is left to insert a banana plug.
david  Nov 09, 2017
A
Yes. It already comes with them plugged in. Just pull them out to use your own.
