About the Grado GT220

Jeff Miller

Grado goes wire-free

I've had a chance to try out the Grado GT220 true-wireless earbuds — the company's first 100% wire-free in-ears. By default, that makes them most technically advanced set of headphones from the Brooklyn-based shop. But I can report that the sound they deliver is classic, old-school Grado.

I heard crystal clear vocals and mids, textured highs, and realistic bass without bloat. All within a soundstage that manages to feel immediate and urgent, while also revealing an extra layer of depth.

Strong, reliable Bluetooth

Music plays wirelessly via Bluetooth version 5.0, a newer version of the popular wireless technology that's stronger and more reliable. The earbuds turned on automatically when I put them in, and paired up immediately to my phone when it was in Bluetooth mode. I could also get a good distance away from my phone without audio dropout — I walked from one end of my basement to the other.

Secure, comfortable fit

These earbuds slipped right into place with a slight twist and remained stable when I moved my head. Grado includes three sizes of silicone ear tips for finding the right fit. That helps for comfort and also ensures you have a tight seal for proper imaging and bass reinforcement.

Listening impressions: Forward soundstage with serious depth

When I first popped in these earbuds, I had just finished auditioning another pair of headphones with a relaxed, laid back sound. So I wasn't quite ready for Grado's intimate soundstage. On the Alicia Keys track, "3 hour drive," her sweet vocals and the slow, Parliament-esque percussion popped right in front of my face, dead center. It was startling at first, but the presentation sprawled out, with subtle sound effects and instruments all finding their own distinct place.

Low-end presence varied from genre to genre (and Grado has never been my first recommendation for huge bass heads). The bass didn't ever feel or sound weak, but it was always straightforward — so no extra thump like you get from other headphones. However the mids were so clear and powerful that I could never call the sound boring.

I received these earbuds around the time Eddie Van Halen passed away, so I put on "Mean Street" off the Fair Warning album. Talk about getting the blood flowing. All those crunchy, nuanced guitar riffs attacked from the left — while the vocals kept me centered and the drums almost seemed to beat from my chest!

Charging case on Qi charger

You can recharge the case wirelessly by placing it on a compatible Qi charger (not included)

Responsive touch controls

You can control music and calls by touching or tapping the left or right earbud. I found the controls snappy and intuitive, and the touch panel wasn't overly sensitive or finnicky. It took me a little while to learn all the different controls, but picked them up rather quickly.

Charging case banks hours of power

You get about six hours of listening on a single charge, which is decent for this category. But the included charging case banks enough power to recharge the earbuds five times while you're on the move, which is above average. You snap the earbuds into the case and they charge as you go, so no mess of wires to worry about when you pull them out.

Features

Overview: The GT220 is the first true wireless headphone from Grado Labs. With Bluetooth 5.0, you can listen to your favorite music on your smartphone or tablet without being tethered to your device. Each ear bud has capacitive touch controls, allowing you to control your phone calls and your phone-based voice assistant from the left ear bud, and your music from the right. The GT220 comes with a charging case that has a powerful battery for additional hours of playback time. Three pairs of silicone ear tips are included, so you'll be able to find the best fit for your ears.

Drivers: The Grado Labs developed their mini-drivers specifically for the GT220 to produce the Grado Signature Sound. The ear buds produce a natural sound across all frequencies without any coloration, with brilliant highs, neutral midrange, and distinctive bass extension.

Ear Tips: The ear buds come with three sizes of ear tips - small, medium, and large - to fit a wide variety of ear sizes. Every ear is a different size and shape, and care should be taken to find the correct size for you. The ear buds should be inserted vertically, then twisted backwards to lock them into place and create a tight seal, which is essential for best sound reproduction.

Touch Controls: The GT220 True Wireless ear buds feature capacitive touch control surrounding Grado's "G" logo. The controls are bifurcated, placing phone call and voice assistant controls on the left ear bud, and music playback controls on the right ear bud. Various features are activated with single, double, and triple taps to the appropriate ear bud. You can raise the volume with a long touch of the right ear bud, and lower the volume with a long touch of the left ear bud.

Bluetooth 5.0: The GT220s have Bluetooth Version 5.0 which provides a solid and dependable wireless connection to your smartphone, tablet, or digital music player. The wireless range is approximately 33 feet. The ear buds support aptX, AAC, and SBC codecs to ensure you get the best sound quality.

Battery Power: Each ear bud has a built-in 50mAh rechargeable battery. On a full charge, the ear buds provide up to 6 hours of battery life. The charging case, with its 500mAh rechargeable battery, has enough power to fully charge the ear buds 5 additional times, for a total battery life of 36 hours. Charging time for the GT220s is 2 hours. The charging case can be charged via the included USB-C cable, or wirelessly. The case is compatible with Qi Wireless Charging, enabling you to simply place it on a wireless charging pad. The front of the charging case has four LEDs to indicate the charging level in 25% increments.
