About the Grado RS1x
Reference-quality sound from Grado
Reference-quality sound from Grado
The first RS1 headphones were created like most great things: during a middle-of-the-night spark of inspiration. After countless hours of prototyping and testing, John Grado made his company's first wooden headphone. Three decades later, the RS1 series is still going strong, continuing with the RS1x.
Carefully tuned and matched drivers
These fourth-generation headphones are the first to use a 50mm X Series driver. The drivers are matched within 0.5dB of each other for improved soundstaging and imaging. They were also tuned by Grado to make sure they sound great in the RS1x's new tri-wood driver housing.
The X series difference
Compared to previous Grado drivers, the ones found in X Series headphones use a more powerful magnetic circuit for tighter driver control, a lighter voice coil for higher efficiency, and a reconfigured "de-stressed" diaphragm for better detail at lower volume levels.
Tri-wood earcup design
The RS1X headphones use a tri-wood earcup made of a maple sleeve, hemp core, and cocobolo outer ring
The gorgeous open-backed driver housings are made of a maple sleeve, hemp core, and cocobolo outer ring. Those wood types were chosen for their sonic characteristics. Maple provides exceptional separation, hemp smooths things out and keeps the sound warm and inviting, and cocobolo adds some extra impact to the bass. The end result is rich, dynamic sound.
L-cushion earpads rest the headphones softly on your ears. The sleek new headband sports some extra cushioning to make the headphones more comfortable and has a white-stitched accent for some added flair.
Grado also built a new cable for their 2021 lineup. The super-annealed copper eight-conductor cable is housed in a more durable exterior and helps provide more detail while keeping out noise at the same time.
Hand-assembled in Brooklyn
Grado started making world-renowned audio equipment in Brooklyn in 1953 and continues to do so today. The SR60x headphones are hand-assembled in Grado's hometown headquarters on 7th Avenue.

Overview: The RS1x from Grado Labs is the first new Reference Series headphone since 2014. These on-ear headphones feature new 50mm X Drivers and a Tri-Wood housing, and are hand-built in Brooklyn, NY. The open-air RS1x also sports a new 8-conductor cable and leather headband. A 3.5mm-to-1/4" adappter is included.
Tri-Wood: For the first time, the designers at Grado Labs have used three different types of wood to work together in a headphone housing. The housing is made with a Maple sleeve, and a core of Hemp, with an outer ring of beautiful Cocobolo wood. Wood has been used in headphones for years, because of its warm tones and elegant finishes. In the RS1x, Grado has found the right balance of materials to elevate the Grado Signature Sound to new levels.
X Drivers: The RS1x headphones feature new 50mm X drivers that were specially tuned for the Tri-Wood housing. These 4th generation X drivers have a more powerful magnetic circuit, a reconfigured diaphragm, and a voice coil with decreased effective mass for better efficiency and less distortion. To insure consistancy, the two headphone drivers are matched to within 0.05dB of each other.
Cable: The Grado RS1x is equipped with a 68" non-detachable headphone cable, which is terminated into a straight 3.5mm plug. The super annealed copper 8-conductor cable has a 2-sided design that is hardwired into both the left and right earcups. The cable has a durable braided jacket, and a sturdy molded plug sleeve with ample stress relief. A snap-on, gold-plated 6.5mm (1/4") audio adapter is included for use with your home audio and studio equipment.
Headband: The headphones are equipped with a redesigned black leather headband with a white stitched accent.
Ear Cushions: The headphones are equipped with replaceable "L" cushions.
