A Long-Time Fan of the "Grado Sound"
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I must admit being partial to Grado headphones after owning a pair of SR60s for 25 years. I listen mostly to LPs from the 60's and 70's, generally classical and big band. I use a separate headphone amplifier. Although Grado Prestige series construction in general is kind of flimsy and old fashioned, the SR60s aged well sonically (with various aftermarket ear pads and other repairs). After some break in time, the SR225e is a definite improvement over the old SR60. More resolution, better transient response, and deeper, tighter bass. My head is fairly large, but In contrast to the instructions in the box, I bent the headband into a tighter radius to increase the clamping force which improved the bass response. The stock ear pads seem to be tolerable and I suspect my ears will toughen up over time (kind of like my ankles when I first learned to ice skate.) Overall, I am very pleased with the SR225e headphones and I know they will still sound good 20 years from now. My only minor complaints are that the headband padding is thinner than my old SR60s and the cable (which is about the diameter of the cord on my circular saw) is about two feet shorter.
Pros: Great sound for the price.
Cons: Getting used to the fit and feel - worth it though
