Less peaky, more transparent vs. 80e

Martin from Anchorage on 11/22/2021

The 80x has largely fixed the many treble peaks which plague the 80e. The 80x's only have a 1-2 dB peak in the lower treble (4 KHz), easily tamed by EQ. In addition their bass rolls off about 1/2 octave lower. More importantly the new X drivers are noticeably faster, more agile, and thus more transparent. Grado has also improved both the cable and the headband.

Pros: Neutral, transparent midrange. Great sense of recorded space. Secure fit without excess pressure.Quite fast and transparent for the money.

Cons: Zero noise isolation, still lean sounding, still some lower treble emphasis. Not suitable for portable use despite their high efficiency.

Grado SR80x

My first Grados and I am never going back to anything else. Love the open soundstage, perfect balance of bass and treble for me, I am wearing them for music and for plugging into my amp when I practice guitar. One nit: the wire leads are a bit stiff. If there was a way to make them a little more flexible, these cans would be perfection.

I am very pleased with my new Grado SR80x Headphones. The sound quality is candy to my ears, it is a real treat. The build quality and comfort are excellent. According to Grado the sound quality will improve with use, that should make them even better. I especially like the open back design. I am looking forward to many hours of listening pleasure.

Get them.

Since these are one step up from Grado's entry level, I expected them to be pretty much OK. But these sound wonderful to these ancient ears. They sound much more expensive than they are and very even handed - sorry for the mixed metaphors. Everything that should be there is. No extended or enhanced anything. There is one caveat, though. They are open-backed so they will not block sounds from your environment. But you probably won't notice it anyway when you're into the music which is what these are all about. Get them.

Pros: Well balanced sound Light-weight Premium cord 1/4 inch adapter included Easy load

Cons: Bare foam instead of fabric covered ear-pads

Defective vs Intentional junk

Robert from Sarasota, FL on 6/3/2021

Bought my SR 60's from Crutchfield in the 90's. Loved them. Just received these SR80 X's from Grado. I believe they are defective, or just plain junk. I LOVE treble, but these phones have the harshest, ill-balanced crowding of sound,- all right in the ears, nothing out front. I see reviewers noting crisp, or balanced, or well-enunciated bass..... Compared to what? Ear buds? These phones deliver a very thin, flimsy shell of bass, and that's generous. Turn them up, and it all gets very garbled. And the super-rigid, over-thick, coarse cables!! Can't believe anyone would buy these after trying. I was back in C'ville last month, but Crutchfield didn't have testers yet, and I thought Grado was a safe bet. Their low-end of great phones is gone.
