System Features

PowerNode: The Bluesound PowerNode is a two-channel integrated amplifier with wireless network and multiroom audio capability. The PowerNode utilizes audiophile-grade HybridDigital amplification and DAC technologies from NAD Electronics, as well as a state-of-the-art Quad-Core processor to bring dynamic power and high-current delivery to your high-resolution music experience, resulting in the ability to play louder than ever before, with zero-distortion precision audio performance.

  • HybridDigital Amplifier: The built-in HybridDigital amplifier is rated at 80 watts x 2 channels (into 8-ohm with 0.06% THD and 110dB signal-to-noise ratio) for rich, clear, and distortion free sound at any volume.
  • 32-Bit/384kHz DAC: The Bluesound PowerNode employs a premium 32-bit/384khz premium DAC to ensure that your lossless high-res music playback is flawless, with precision and clarity.
  • Quad-Core 1.8GHz Processor: The PowerNode features a powerful Quad-Core 1.8GHz ARM Cortex A53 chipset that processes audio 8x faster than previous generations of Bluesound components for power and speed required for the best wireless HiFi performance.

Speaker Setup Options: The Bluesound PowerNode integrated network amplifier can be used in a 2ch stereo music setup, 2.1ch stereo music application, or a 4.1ch home theater configuration (Dolby Digital).

  • Music Playback Add a pair of 8-ohm loudspeakers (sold separately) to the Bluesound PowerNode integrated network amplifier to create a 2ch stereo music setup. You can also add a pair of 8-ohm loudspeakers and the Bluesound Pulse Sub+ wireless powered subwoofer (all sold separately) to create a 2.1ch music setup.
  • Home Theater: Use two PowerNode integrated network amplifiers, two pair of 8-ohm loudspeakers, and one Bluesound Pulse Sub+ wireless powered subwoofer (all sold separately) to create a 4.1ch home theater. You can also also configure a 4.1ch home theater using one PowerNode integrated network amp, one pair of 8-ohm loudspeakers, one Bluesound Pulse Sub+ wireless powered subwoofer, and two Pulse Flex 2i speakers (all sold separately). The PowerNode supports Dolby Digital (not DTS).

Note: In a 4.1ch home theater configuration, the rear speakers will only output Dolby Digital content (they cannot be used for multiroom audio distribution).

BluOS Wireless High-Resolution Multiroom Audio: The Bluesound PowerNode is part of the BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio eco-system - consisting of powered speakers, soundbar speakers, amplifiers, players, and hard-drives. The BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio ecosystem uses your home's wired or wireless network to connect multiple Bluesound products and play your music in perfect sync, or different music simultaneously, anywhere in your home. Using advanced technologies, BluOS can wirelessly transmit lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz at ultra-fast speeds with no lag and zero loss in sound quality.

  • Compatible Multiroom Audio Sources: The following audio sources can be used for multiroom audio playback - internet radio (including TuneIn & iHeart Radio); online music services (including Tidal, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, Slacker, and Napster); Bluetooth & USB audio, music libraries (from computers and NAS drives); as well as analog & digital inputs (including HDMI & Optical).
  • Number of BluOS Zones: Up to 16 Bluesound devices can be connected in a strictly wireless environment. Demonstrated practice has shown that you can create up to 8 groups of 8 Bluesound devices or 4 groups of 16 Bluesound devices. If you want to connect more than 16 Bluesound devices, you will need to connect the Bluesound devices to your network using a wired connection. BluOS can then control up to 64 devices in a strictly wired environment.

Note: All generations of Bluesound and BluOS products can be used together in a wireless Hi-Res multiroom audio system.

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Bluesound PowerNode can be connected to your home network and Internet provider via a hardwired Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 jack connector or wireless 2.4/5GHz dual-band WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac connection. The 5GHz WiFi band offers a faster and more reliable connection with fewer interruptions and dropouts. Either network/internet connection allows you to stream music libraries from your Windows or Mac computer and NAS drive (such as the Bluesound Vault 2i, sold separately); as well as stream select online music services and internet radio.

  • Wired Ethernet Setup: A wired connection to the network is simple and requires no setup. If you wish to use the wired connection, simply connect the PowerNode directly to your router or home network using an Ethernet cable (sold separately).
  • Wireless WiFi Setup: A wireless connection allows you to place the BluOS component virtually anywhere inside your home, but does require setup through the BluOS app on your Apple iOS or Android device. If you are on a Windows PC (7/8/10) or Apple Mac, you'll use Bluesound's web browser based application. You'll be walked you through the set-up process step-by-step.
Note: A wireless network router will always be required for the BluOS Controller App.

High Resolution Audio: High-resolution audio tracks are either 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz, and contain up to 6.5x more data than standard CDs, letting you hear all the detail of your favorite music in superior quality. With full support for hi-res audio, you can stream WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WMA-Lossless, MQA music files over your home's WiFi network or directly from a connected USB mass storage class device. The Bluesound system also supports compressed music files such as MP3, AAC, WMA and OGG. Bluesound has been designed to work with today's larger music collections, and has indexed libraries up to 200,000 songs in demonstrated practice (this will depend on the music's metadata & artwork). Bluesound also offers gapless playback by default for all supported file music types.

Compression File Type Sampling Frequency Bit Rate or Bit Depth
Compressed Lossy MP3 16-48kHz 192-320 kbps
WMA
AAC
OGG
Lossless WMA-Lossless up to 96 kHz up to 24-bit
FLAC 192 kHz up to 24-bit
ALAC
MQA
Uncompressed AIFF up 192 kHz up to 24-bit

Notes: Bluesound cannot index or play AAC files with the extension ".m4p". These files were purchased in iTunes prior to 2009 and are subject to copy protection. Apple Consumers with an iTunes Match subscription can delete and re-download these files free of charge from their iTunes Cloud

MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): Bluesound is the first wireless multiroom audio system to support MQA (Master Quality Authenticated). MQA is a revolutionary end-to-end technology that captures and delivers master quality audio in a file that's small enough to stream or download. Bluesound worked closely with MQA to implement technology inside each Bluesound component to ensure the listener will hear MQA encoded music and streams exactly like the source and the way the artist intended you to hear it when it was approved in the studio.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Bluesound PowerNode is equipped with four binding post speaker terminals to connect a pair of loudspeakers. The terminals will accept single or dual banana plug connectors, or bare wire. The plastic terminal caps must first be removed in order to use banana plugs.

The PowerNode also features a mono-RCA subwoofer output for adding a powered sub. You can only use one of these types of sub outputs (not both). The wired and wireless subwoofer output features an adjustable low pass crossover that can be set Off or On in the BluOS Controller App.

  • Subwoofer Crossover Off: The subwoofer low pass crossover is fixed at 80Hz, while the main speaker outputs are full-range.

Customer Q&A

12 questions already asked

Q
Is the Powernode rated to drive 4 ohm speakers? What is the rated power at 4 ohm?
[ Robert  Nov 19, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
The Powernode is not rated to drive 4-ohm speakers Robert, but there is good news though. The new Powernode EDGE in the link below IS 4-ohm stable and puts out the same 80 watts as the original Powernode into a 4-ohm load. Major bonus too is that it is also a little easier on the wallet! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_813PNEDGEB/Bluesound-POWERNODE-Edge-Black.html

Will the Powernode down mix Dolby digital to a 2.1 output, essentially blending the center into the LR to create a virtual center? I would prefer this for tv audio rather than using PCM tv output.
[ ESTON  Oct 15, 2022 ]

A
No, the Bluesound cannot down mix because it does not have a Dolby decoder. This is why PCM soundtracks are created upstream. Select it as your output from whatever feeds the Powernode -- such as your TV -- and you'll have your proper stereo with center-channel info blended into it.

Greetings Eston, and thank you for your question. I checked with the people over at Bluesound for this. Yes, the Dolby Digital will send center channel information to the left and right speakers.

I would like to use a center channel for watching TV, is this possible? If yes, how and will this be this a half-baked solution or a proper way to use the device?

It's possible, and you can also add a rear speaker(s), too. Your goal is to keep the total load seen by the amp within its acceptable limits. This was achieved decades ago with the Halfer/Dynaco wiring method. Just don't pretend it'll be as effective as Dolby ProLogic, let alone anything modern. 1. Disconnect the NEGs of the L-R pair at the amp. 2. For the center, connect its POS to both NEGs of the L-R speakers. Connect its NEG to both of the amp's NEGs. Note that this setup assumes the NEGs of the amp are internally connected (they usually are.) You'll get a mono blend of the L-R pair from the center speaker. 3. If you'd like to add a rear, connect it to both POS at the amp. This rear speaker will only output out-of-phase signals, creating a surround effect. Use 2 speakers and the surround effect is diminished. There are many opportunities for this to not sound great, but it shouldn't be horrible, either. Dynaco sold boxes that added user adjustments, see QD-1 and QD-1 Series II.

Enter an answer to this question. This Powernode is designed to output 2-channel sound (left/right.) To have a center channel you need a home theater receiver. Consider a NAD receiver as these have a Bluesound Node built in and can output to center channel and left/right. These are not much more expensive than this powernode, but are more complex to deploy. I'm assuming you have 3 speakers set up (left/center/right.) If you are looking for a single speaker under the TV and no other speakers, then a soundbar might be the better move.

It's not impossible Luis, that's for sure! I would not recommend due to the fact the Node has no home theater processing, only 2 channel stereo. What would really work well is if you used a stereo pair of speakers for a 2.0 tv setup, that would provide excellent sound from Tv with the Node. IF you have your heart set on a center channel/soundbar type setup consider using something like this KEF HTF7003 in the link below. This is a passive soundbar and we have a few different models from different brands available, essentially the front 3 channels of a home theater setup. You CAN use something like this with the Node and only power the L and R stages of this bar, leaving the center channel drivers not connected. This would essentially be a 2 channel setup in bar/center form and while dis-traditional it would work, so you got options! I hope this helps. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_991HTF7003/KEF-HTF7003.html

Has anyone used the Powernode to drive Wharfedale Linton speakers? If yes, what are your impressions? Thank you!

It will sound ok but Audiolab 6000A or Marantz PM6007 would be much better match for smooth sound and full bass.

Greetings Patrick, and thank you for your question. The Powernode has very clean power for a class D amp, but i would expect that from NAD. Occasionally we will set up some in house demonstrations, but I do not recall that Powernode running the Linton's. I'll forward this to customers who purchased the Powernode from us and see if we get a response from someone that used it on the Linton's.

What makes this better than the Bluesound Node?

Greetings John, and thank you for your question. The Powernode has a built in amplifier for those that do not already have an amp. Almost like an integrated streaming amp, you would control the volume thru the Bluesound app.

Q
How would someone connect a turntable to this unit?
[ Bradley  Jun 03, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
This unit does not have aa native Phono stage. You would need to connect a turntable (with a phono stage built in) or us e a separate phono pre amp. Then yo could connect the phono stage via and RCA to 3.5mm cable via the analog inputs n the back of the Bluesound. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help clarify and guide you to the right gear if needed!

NAD describes it as a hybrid amp. It's a digital Class D essentially. The latest model is my second PowerNode, running RP-600M speakers. With the latest DAC and power increase, even happier.

Join the bluesound fans Facebook group and someone there can tell you. I think Bluetooth is too lossy to bother with for music

I use Roon as my main playback interface and I can control the volume through Roon without having to use the BlueOS app. I haven't tried it with the Spotify app though.
[ JOHN  Sep 27, 2021 ]

You can control the volume from Spotify or whatever app you are in. No need to switch to blue sound app
[ KASPER DE  Sep 26, 2021 ]

Yes. And if you have the powernode wired to the internet, you can turn it up and down thru walls.
[ TIMOTHY J  Sep 26, 2021 ]

I have only used AirPlay for one event and that was becasue I used PowerNode and a Naim Muso as remote speakers. Once I manually balanced the PowerNode and Qb, I used the volume control of my remote device from which I was throwing my Tidal music. Tidal is the only streaming service I use and almost always when I want to connect to the powernode system (ceiling speakers i newly remodeled kitchen) I use the Bluesound app. I am sure that this is not a complete answer but it is the only experience I have.

How is the sound quality of the Bluesound Powernode with the KEF LS50 Metas?
[ Edzrag  Dec 28, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
I'm not using my Powernode with the KEF LS50 Metas, so I can't provide you a specific answer as to that speaker. I've used my Powernode with my Wharfdale bookshelf speakers, and I really enjoy the sound quality. The Bluesound app is great, and the Powernode shows up as an output device in Roon. Overall, it's been a great purchase.

Can I stream music from my Apple Music library?
[ EWING  Apr 30, 2022 ]

You can stream to it via Airplay from an apple device running Apple Music. It does not have a native app for it though, like it does for Spotify and Tidal. If you want to stream your own library you can from a samba share on your network (nas, pc, mac)
[ JOHN  May 03, 2022 ]

I stream from my iPad.
[ ULF  May 02, 2022 ]
A
Yes, this is why I purchased it.
[ DAVID  May 02, 2022 ]
A
It's an AirPlay endpoint. So your source can't be this; it has to still be an Apple device playing the stream such a Mac, iPhone, or iPad. You can then specify the Powernode to take the stream FROM the Apple Device. It won't pull it down from the cloud, because Apple only allows Sonos to do that. Here, you'd have to keep your Mac or iOS device active (not asleep) and playing the stream.
