About the MartinLogan ElectroMotion® R

Remarkable sound without the clutter

The ElectroMotion R proves that a speaker can deliver outstanding sound, without standing out in the room. MartinLogan's potent in-ceiling speaker provides powerful performance for all your music and home theater needs, while vanishing neatly into your room's decor. Install a pair of these speakers in a kitchen or bedroom for fantastic stereo sound, or use multiple pairs to create a concealed surround sound system in your living room.

MartinLogan EM R in-ceiling speaker

Folded Motion™ tweeter for open, detailed sound

The distinctive sound of the ElectroMotion R starts with MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter. Rather than a dome or cone driver, this tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music and movie soundtracks sound amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.

Bass that keeps pace

The speaker's deep, responsive bass and dynamic midrange come courtesy of an 8" aluminum cone woofer. Mounted in a rigid, cast-aluminum basket to minimize unwanted resonance, the woofer supplies fast, clean sound that blends seamlessly with the Folded Motion tweeter. A hand-built, audiophile-grade crossover further ensures precise driver integration for high-accuracy sound.

Installer-friendy design

The ElectroMotion R's robust mounting-lock system allows quick, trouble-free installation, providing firm coupling of the speaker's chassis to the ceiling. And this speaker is practically invisible thanks to an ultra-low profile, micro-perforated grille and hidden bezel. Magnets hold the grille in place, reducing the risk of warping or damage during installation. The Folded Motion tweeter is mounted at an angle, allowing the entire speaker to rotate to aim sound precisely where you want it.

Sounds great - big upgrade

I just bought one for my center channel to see if it sounded better than the Polk MC80 speakers that I had previously installed. I thought the Polk's were good but these were a significant upgrade. Much clearer dialog and fuller sound. The whole speaker is tilted in the frame so you can aim it at the listening position. I think this alone make a big improvement as it gives you more direct sound and less reflected. The speaker is quite big, we wondered if it would fit in the ceiling, but there is a lot of room up there. Just ordered 2 more to complete the front set of speakers and to be able to check out stereo audio. I'm using a Marantz 1608 receiver which drivers it well.

Pros: Excellent sound, easy to install, direct sound because of the angled speakers, magnetic speaker cover is easy to use.

Cons: None

Features

In-Ceiling Loudspeaker: The ElectroMotion R in-ceiling loudspeaker features MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter and a 8" aluminum cone woofer with cast aluminum basket that provides powerful low-frequency bass extension. This stealthy in-ceiling speaker blends seamlessly into any home thanks to it's ultra-low profile, micro-perforated grille with no visible bezel.

Angled Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter helps give the ElectroMotion IW in-ceiling speaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x80°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage. The Folded Motion tweeter is mounted at an angle, allowing the entire speaker to rotate to aim sound precisely where you want it.

Aluminum Cone Woofer: The ElectroMotion R in-ceiling speaker employs a 8" aluminum cone woofer with a rubber surround, concave dust cap, and cast aluminum basket for detailed midrange and powerful low-frequency bass extension.

Precision Vojtko Crossover: Carefully hand-built using only the finest polyester capacitors and air-core coils, the crossover employ's MartinLogan's proprietary Vojtko topology for vanishingly low distortion and seamless driver integration. This precision-tuned network preserves even the most microscopic sonic nuances while handling the full dynamics of any source.

Spring-Post Connectors: The MartinLogan ElectroMotion R features two spring-post connectors to attach your speaker wire. The spring-posts will accept bare wire (16- to 12-gauge) and pin-connectors.

Robust Mounting Locks: A robust mounting-lock system allows quick, trouble-free installation. When not in use, the constant-control mounting locks are held securely within a self-contained housing. When moved into place during installation, they couple the speaker's chassis firmly to the ceiling. And if the speaker is ever removed, the locks retract and latch themselves back in their housings.

Ultra-Low Profile Grille: The MartinLogan EM-R features an ultra-low profile, paintable micro-perforated grille with no visible bezel for a near invisible integration into any ceiling. A magnetic system secures the grille easily into place, reducing the risk of warping or damage during installation.

Applications & Placement: The EM-R is suitable for almost any application in average to small rooms. Ideal for use in a multi-channel home theater as a surround speaker, in a kitchen as 2-channel stereo speaker, or in a hallway as part of a distributed audio system. This MartinLogan in-ceiling speaker offers superb imaging and flexible placement in nearly any location. However, for best performance and imaging place speakers equidistant from one another and avoid physical obstructions between the speaker and primary listening position.

Installation Dimensions: The in-ceiling speaker has an overall measurement of 11.5" in diameter x 6.0" deep. It requires a cut-out of 10.5" in diameter and a mounting depth of 5.9375" behind the ceiling surface. The speaker only protrudes 0.125" from the ceiling.

Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

Q
Does Crutchfield .. or anyone .... sell a decent power amplifier for under $1200 that is recommended to fully use these speakers (which seem to be rated for up to 300 watts per channel)? The intended usage is a music/dance/club room at my house. Thank you.

A
These are very efficient speakers so you really don't need much power to drive them. I'm using a slimline Marantz 1608 and they get very loud. I'd add a powered subwoofer as this will take a lot of the high power demands off of the receiver and main speakers.

A
Yes, very well for left, center, and right channels. The ability to aim the tweeter housing is outstanding.
