MartinLogan 60XT in Black Cherrywood

The Motion 60XT floor-standing speaker plays loud and low, and with impressive transparency and presence.

Folded Motion XT tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion XT tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works similarly to an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. Because it requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, response time is drastically reduced along with distortion. The diaphragm's increased surface area also provides wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and highly accurate soundstage. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness. And the XT tweeter boasts a 40% larger radiating surface area than that of ML's standard Folded Motion design, for even greater bandwidth and efficiency.

Expressive midrange and deep, effortless bass

The Motion 60XT uses a low-distortion 6-1/2" aluminum cone to supply fast, clean, and open-sounding midrange, so vocals sound almost as if the singer were in the room. Dual 8" woofers with rigid cast aluminum baskets ensure the Motion 60XT goes deep and clean. These drivers increase low-frequency output, making sure bass response isn't an afterthought or left for a subwoofer to worry about. Two rear-firing bass ports help efficiently enhance bass response without adding distortion to this speaker's pristine performance.

All that and looks too

MartinLogan knows how to catch ears and eyes. The Motion 60XT comes in your choice of flawless Gloss Black or Black Cherrywood finishes. The cabinet features a gently angled top and soft-radius corners, making it stand out from the typical box-shaped tower speaker. Removable floor spikes and stabilizer bars offer firm footing while enhancing this speaker's natural sound.

Yes, They deserve the Five star rating. They replaced PSB imagine T3's . PSB imagine T3's have distinctive sound, these seem to image better in my 5.1 system. Base is good, but needs a sub for the " Band in the room" sound. For the money, their excellent, excellent speakers.

Ok I tell the salesman I need good speakers but know nothing but money. How much? How much u got? 3000$. The salesman says perfect got two things called motion60. What do I know so I listen! Lay my money down all wrestle them home. Just stereo to a sr7010 that scared me to death. Every sound unit has a graphic equalizer. Low crossover Gage's for everything. But the sound is like heaven. My old carnarby st cd's sounded magical playing with the stereo sound. Have added all front wall m/l speakers for home theater and use jbl arena 180's in back for surround sound use. Always wound out at 80% or higher for rear special effects. But basic stereo still sends me into wattage wonder.

Audiophile sound, beautiful finish

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

System is an Anthem MRX 720, Paradigm PS-1000 sub, Martin Logan Motion 8 center, and Polk 65 RT rear surrounds. I used to sell high end audio (McIntosh, Audio Research, ADS, Nakamichi, etc), and I finally have a system that rivals my favorite from yesteryear, which was the Nakamichi separate preamp and amps with bi-amped ADS L1290's and Nak CD player. These aren't even broken in, and I'm blown away that after 31 years since I was selling this stuff, I finally have a system that sounds as good. The only thing that would make it better would be a really nice CD player instead of my Samsung 4K blu-ray (Saxes are a bit harsh with cheap CD players), so that will be the next purchase. My room is really big, around 25' x 30', and open to other rooms. I had purchased the DefTech Mythos STS towers, and after realizing that the room was just too big for the built in subs, I decided to keep my sub and spend more money on the pure quality of the speaker instead of amps and built in subs, and I'm glad I did. Super tight, fast, beautiful imaging and projection, smooth highs without listening fatigue. I can hardly wait to see how these sound in a couple of months. For the first time in 30 years, I'm just sitting and listening to music again. Crutchfield effortlessly handled my return of the Definitive speakers. I had to buy those first to see if the subs could handle the large room, and they couldn't come close to the Paradigm. I'm so happy, and plan on keeping these for decades.

Pros: Value, appearance, high end sound, versatility, size, folded motion tweeter, full range

Cons: None that I can think of.

The speakers have a great warm characteristic that makes them perfect for my listing space. I wanted to upgrade my two channel speakers, these fit the bill nicely. I purchased these blind, so far I am very pleased. They are extremely musical. Also, they really do look great in my room.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great speakers. Produce true sound, with great clarity and range. Packed by Martin Logan with the love they deserve, to protect their 66-pound bulk from the risks of shipping. Arrived in perfect condition. Replaced two 60-pound BP-10Bs, one of which was damaged in transit (from a different source) and had to be replaced (at great inconvenience). Bi-wired the new 60XTs for best power delivery (with reasonably priced cables). Could not be more pleased. Highly recommend these speakers to every serious listener of stereo music. Can't beat Crutchfield for service.

Pros: Sound true with great clarity.

Cons: Rear wiring posts rather obtrusive (a minor concern in most applications).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had these speakers for a few weeks. I ran them continuously for 80 hours to accelerate the break in period ( suggested to be 72 hours). During that period the speakers really opened up to a much richer sound with a fuller base and well defined highs. These speakers replaced a set of Bose 10.2 which I had for at least twenty years. I am very pleased with the Martin Logan speakers both on their own for stereo music and as part of my 5.2 home theater surround sound setup. I also added the Martin Logan 1000W subwoofer for dramatic effect on movies....awesome.

Pros: Beautiful combination with 125w per channel receiver and SACD music; great, secure packaging upon delivery. Finish on speakers is stunning.

Cons: Somewhat large in height at 48 inches tall.

Outstanding Speakers from Martin Logan

Adrian from Johns Creek, GA on 5/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent speakers! I am still breaking them in. However, after only 15 hours or so of medium level audio signals going through them, they sound fantastic. They are much clearer and musically precise than the towers I had used previously. I am anxiously waiting for the completion of the factory recommended 72-hour break in period to hear these babies really sing. The bass is okay, but not enough to bring out the realism in some of my Jazz or R&B music, so I employ 12" subwoofers to complement them. I really like the natural sounds coming from these speakers, especially from the Folded Motion tweeters that ML uses. They create a wide and clear sound stage that brings the music to life, making the listener feels as though he's in the same room with the performers. Vocals, string instruments, bells, cymbals, triangles, etc, are so clear and precise. But not to leave the drums and horns out, they too come alive with these speakers, as do all musical instruments. An excellent choice for any serious audiophile.

Pros: Precision Folded Motion XT tweeters; clear and precise sounds; high sensitivity of 94 dB; dedicated 6.5" mid range speaker and 2x 8" woofers; magnetic perforated grilles; high-precision audiophile-grade crossover network used in each speaker. Capable of handling power within the range of 20-400 watts.

Cons: Finger print magnet since I have the piano black model.

Sweet leading fronts with silky mids

Eric from Raleigh, NC on 10/29/2016

OMG!! Imaging and separation, well balanced across the frequency ranges, warm bass, not harsh at high volumes! I would compare against any other for two channel audio, theater, and as lead fronts in a 5.1/7.2 etc. If you offered me more than I paid for them, I wouldn't let em go. Owned 1 year

Pros: Imaging, warmth, equality across frequency ranges

Cons: A bit large

Sensational Sound

Brian W from Wyckoff, NJ on 7/15/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the Martin Logan Motion 60XTs and first off want to say how professional and courteous all the folks at Crutchfield were. Product came as promised with no hitches. I bought these speakers based on the fact they are from Martin Logan and the rave review by David Martson in The Absolute Sound. He gave very high praise and believe me he is right. The speaker category in and around this price range is very crowded and there are many excellent products to choose from. But the Motion 60 XTs, I feel, are a bargain even at their current price. Just to give some relevant background information, I am using them in a 2 channel audio system only. I have a Rogue Audio RP-5 tube amplifier driven by a 25-year old Adcom GFA-555 solid state amplifier along with a Sony ES5400 SACD player. The system is in my living room (approximately 14 by 23 feet). The Motion 60 XTs replaced a pair of Infinite Slopes that I purchased along with the Adcom. The Infinite Slopes were good speakers. But I realized what I was missing all these years once I hooked the Motion 60 XTs. Just as Mr. Martson said in his review, the soundstage exceeds the width of the speakers. I'm hearing subtle nuances for the first time in songs I've heard hundreds of times and I'm nowhere near the full break-in period. I whole heartedly recommend the Motion 60 XTs. They truly are exceptional and you'll feel totally engaged with the music. And that's what it's all about. Great job Martin Logan.

Pros: -Amazing clarity -Broad soundstage -Seamless integration of drivers along with ideal placement within cabinet to produce 'you are there' sound -Will accommodate a wide range of amplifiers (20-400 watt handling). But see Martson's advice on amplifier requirements -Small footprint -Beautiful workmanship, including high-gloss finish (I have the black finish) T-hose nice 'tool-less' speaker binding posts

Cons: Nothing.

Great speakers

Luis from CA on 6/15/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very glad I purchased these speakers from Crutchfield. They are stunning to look at, large and imposing. Visually they command attention, specially w the grills off. I got the piano black finish as I did not see any reason to spend the extra $$ just for a different look. In terms of performance, they are wonderful. In the past I owned a pair of JBL L 300s, so I am used to audiophile level equipment. The Matin Logan's are a great value for the price. Beautiful, clear, natural sound that in my non professional opinion is how recordings were intended to sound, natural and well balanced. Great detail and superb soundstaging. Deep bass, clean mids, and clear highs. An elegant and efficient package both in performance and in looks.

Pros: Clear and natural sound. Great looks. Great value for the $$$

Cons: Not a negative, but do check your room dimensions. These are "good" size, tall speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great well-balanced Sound and a beautiful cabinet make the speaker a perfect fit for my square foot living room. For those who like the electrostatic sound what is well-defined Stereo Imaging these speakers provide that but you also get great lows thanks to the ported cabinet. I listen to speakers from the $6,000 range per pair to the $1,500 range per pair and nothing was even close to the Elegance of the sound of these speakers

Pros: Gorgeous piano grade finish full well know that sound with great myths and highs High sensitivity speakers make them efficient for a range of amps

Cons: Can be a little boomey if their placed in a corner the sound can be room placement sensitive also these are not small speakers

Exceeded expectations

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted to upgrade and now realize (hear) why. Allows my amp to show its true capabilities/power. Subtleties of music really stand out, high end much better, low frequencies are clearly defined and distinguished. The subwoofer (*special) was also well worth it. Cruthfield is top notch with best products, prices and service !!!

Pros: Separation clarity, solid bass, premium materials, great cust. service

Cons: Slight talc. powder discoloration in rubber woofer ring, cosmetic only.

Speakers that beat anything else in their price range

Steve Z from Pennsylvania on 12/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After making a few visits to a local stereo dealer, I fell in love with the sound coming out of their ML Motion 40's, it had clarity I have not heard before, I listened to the Electro-static models from ML, but for my room, I would never be able to get them in a good position for good sound, plus the 40's sounded almost as good. The only thing the 40's lacked was some extra bass, so on a Black Friday sale, I went for the 60's, and they were running a deal on a free Dynamo 700 Subwoofer, deal I couldn't turn down. The 60's produce a sound that is complete, perfect. And when I hooked up my Dac Magic Plus, and ran some Hi-Res classical music, I could not believe what I was hearing, never heard such a sweet sound coming from these speakers, and to think I still need about 50 hours of breakin time to see them really shine. Remarkable.

Pros: Unparalleled sound and sonic speed, midranges that are as close to perfect. You hear things in music you never heard before, and everything is fast. Perfect height for my tv.

Cons: Haven't found any so far. Price maybe, but after hearing what was available in this price range, nothing came even close.

Product Research

3-Way Tower Loudspeaker: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT tower loudspeaker employs a 3-way speaker design and features MartinLogan's advanced resolution Folded Motion XT Tweeter, a 6.5" aluminum cone midrange driver, and two 8" aluminum cone bass woofers. Combining these trio of woofers together with the Folded Motion Tweeter creates a dynamic full-range sound with an expansive soundstage.

  • Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion XT tweeter helps give the Motion 60XT floorstanding loudspeaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1.25" x 2.4" Folded Motion XT tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x30°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
  • 6.5" Midrange Driver: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT loudspeaker features a 6.5" aluminum cone midrange driver housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber. The aluminum cone driver uses a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. This 6.5" midrange driver promotes an even more open, revealing, and authentic sound in the critical midrange.
  • Two Aluminum 8" Woofers w/ Rear-Firing Bass Port: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT also features dual 8" aluminum cone bass woofers housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber with dual rear-firing ports. The aluminum cone woofers use a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. The two 8" woofers paired with the rear-firing bass port create increased cone area delivering higher output and audibly richer, deeper bass performance.

Precision Crossovers: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the high frequency tweeter, the midrange driver, and two bass woofers, the Motion 60XT loudspeaker features a precision crossovers (400/2200Hz) utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.

High-Gloss MDF Cabinet: Complementing the Motion 60XT loudspeaker's sonic accuracy is its solidly constructed 3/4" thick MDF cabinet. The cabinet is finished in either high-gloss piano black or black cherrywood, and includes MartinLogan's signature perforated grille. The Motion 60XT speaker's elegant and timeless look will blend into almost any decor. The speaker cabinet also features rounded edges and a gently tapered top.

Bi-Wiring/Bi-Amping: Using the dual posts, you can bi-wire or bi-amp the speaker. Bi-wiring or bi-amping the speaker provides improved bass & treble performance. If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: MartinLogan's proprietary tool-less binding posts simplify cable connection and management. The binding posts will accept bare wire (16- to 10-gauge), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Mounting Feet: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT tower loudspeaker includes four pre-installed rubber feet for tile and hardwood floors. You can replace the pre-installed rubber feet with two horizontal feet and four vertical spikes for carpeted flooring.

Placement: Although the speakers are designed to deliver a superb sonic performance when placed close to a wall, you may notice improved imaging and detail if you are able to place the speakers (measured from the tweeter and woofers) 2' to 3' from the front wall and 2' or more from the side walls. To achieve optimum stereo imaging it is recommend that you aim the speakers toward your primary listening position.

Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

Why did you buy this?

Weight not too much. Power rating good for my application. BTW It was indicated that I would get a free subwoofer with this order. Will I get that free as indicated? [ Harold Joe  Dec 29, 2017 ]
After auditioning this speaker at teh store, the sound reproduction was very close to the real instrument. [ RUT  Aug 14, 2017 ]
I liked the specifications, MartinLogan reputation, price and the fact that Jolida tech. rep. (my tube amp OEM) assured me this would be a killer set of speakers for my particular home system. [ Jeffrey Jenkins  Dec 01, 2016 ]

blown midrange!!! new, out of warranty, with 1hour break-in. oh well!!! They sound so good I am simply replacing the right speaker!!!...The serial #'s do not have to be in sequence like my M/L Montis Electrostat's -This is my 3rd pair of Martin Logan speakers. This is my brand. [ Kevin  Mar 17, 2018 ]
After testing numerous sets of speaker at different stores and shops, I found that the sound coming out of these speakers was my favorite. [ Mark  Feb 28, 2016 ]

2 questions already asked

The Onkyo TX-NR757 is rated as being able to produce 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at .08% THD, with 2 channels driven. However, with either 6 or 4 Ohm speakers attached, the power output from the AVR will be even higher. With that said, this AVR is more than adequate to drive these ML Motion 60XT towers. These speakers are very sensitive , thus they do not require a lot of wattage to drive them to perform optimally. Enjoy. [ ADRIAN  Sep 19, 2017 ]
In my opinion the onkyo will not have the power needed properly power these speakers. I had a denon 7200 hooked up and they did not sound well, pretty much no sound stage. I put a McIntosh 402 with the speakers and they started to sound better. I then powered them with a class a tube amp and wow, they really came alive. When these speakers are powered right they sound pretty good. [ Michael  Sep 19, 2017 ]
Hello, I am pretty sure your Onkyo will work fine but I have never tested with one so I will let you know my experience with low power amplfiers. I have powered these with my 15W class A transistor amplifier with no issue. Also tested on a 10w single ended class A tube amplifier. The sound is "loud" enough for music audition. These speakers have a limited range on the sub bass as indicated by the specification so don't expect to be rumbling with any sub sonic especially with a low power amplifier. The compliment external subwoofer from Martin will complete the fidelity. [ RUT  Sep 19, 2017 ]
I'm not very familiar with your amplifier, but based on the specs it has more power than my Denon receiver and these speakers sound great with the power I have. These speakers have a pretty high sensitivity and can run well off of a small amount of power. You'll love them! [ Justin  Mar 04, 2018 ]
Plenty of power for these speakers. The NAD offers 150 W per channel into 8 ohms while the ML 60 XT are 4 ohm speakers which increases the power. [ C Anthony  Mar 04, 2018 ]
Yes it will power them great! The NAD is rated at 150 Watts per channel @ 8 ohms. Therefore you will get 300 Watts a side into 4 ohms. The speakers are rated up to 400 Watts a side. I'm powering mine with a classe ca-200. [ JASON  Mar 04, 2018 ]
Either the customer or Crutchfield need to provide specs on the amp, unless the only acceptable answer is from someone who actually has this very setup. 2 great companies and I have used NAD in 4 different stereo only systems. My first experience with MartinLogan: astounding speakers that work well for stereo only or as mains in a home theater. They're surprisingly efficient, but have to be off of the wall in order to not sound muddy. 2' works perfectly, but not everyone has that much room (I didn't, so I was lucky to be able to swap rooms, where they just opened up). Drive them easily with 150 watt 2 channel amp. [ Edwin  Mar 04, 2018 ]
