About the MartinLogan Motion® 60XTi

A high-performance tower speaker

The 60XTi is the flagship of MartinLogan's Motion line. It produces detailed highs, open and authentic midrange performance, and deep, musical bass response. This model features a drive-stabilizing dust cap and stiffened motor suspension on its midrange and low-frequency woofers. The latter are mounted low to reduce an unwelcome acoustic phenomenon known as floor bounce, to keep the bass and critical midrange frequencies properly balanced. Because details matter.

A high-performance tower speaker

MartinLogan Motion 60XTi

The Motion 60XTi floor-standing speaker plays loud and low, and with impressive transparency and presence.

Folded Motion XT® tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan's acclaimed Folded Motion XT tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works similarly to an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. Because it requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, response time is drastically reduced along with distortion.

The diaphragm's increased surface area also provides wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and highly accurate soundstage. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness. And the XT tweeter boasts a 40% larger radiating surface area than MartinLogan's standard Folded Motion design, for even greater bandwidth and efficiency.

Excellent midrange and bass

The Motion 60XTi uses a low-distortion 6-1/2" aluminum cone woofer to supply fast, clean midrange and two 8" woofers for powerful bass performance that blends seamlessly with the Folded Motion XT tweeter. Two low-turbulence rear-firing ports extend bass performance, but keep it tight and tuneful.

Unique crossover network

Motion Series speakers feature proprietary Vojtko™ crossovers, named after MartinLogan's chief audio technologist, Joe Vojtko. "A Vojtko crossover isn't so much a set of design requirements as it is a philosophy," the company explains. Each speaker's drivers are carefully selected or designed to operate within an intentional frequency range and specific performance parameters. That allows the crossover networks — built from high-quality capacitors and resistors — to be clean and uncomplicated.

Part of a complete MartinLogan surround sound system

The MartinLogan Motion Series features an array of speakers that are voice-matched for compatibility in an immersive surround sound system:

Features

Folded Motion XT Tweeter: MartinLogan's signature 1.25" x 2.4" Folded Motion XT tweeter utilizes an extremely low mass diaphragm that "squeezes" air, thus demanding significantly less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter. Its folded design also allows for a much larger surface area than compared to that of a regular 1" dome tweeter for controlled dispersion and low distortion characteristics. MartinLogan's Folded Motion XT tweeter is engineered to deliver much of the same high-frequency detail and speed of their large, dynamic electrostatic panel in a small space. This Folded Motion XT tweeter with advanced thin-film transducer technology offers a 40% larger radiating surface and 80x30 degree controlled dispersion for an increased audible bandwidth without sacrificing any detail and minimizing distortion to an unprecedented level, while also increasing efficiency and the tweeter's already lightning-fast response time. The result is a natural, realistic, and dynamic sound.

High-Performance Woofers & Midrange Driver: Two custom built, 8" bass drivers and one custom built-in 6.5" midrange driver pair a high-power magnet structure with an aluminum cone diaphragm to deliver massive excursion and sound output, while preserving bass details and maximizing power handling capability - all without a hint of distortion. A unique concave dust cap design reinforces the strength and rigidity of the cone, while also reducing break up modes.

  • Aluminum Cone Woofer Construction: The use of aluminum for for the cone maximizes rigidity and strength of the driver without adding excessive weight. This, along with the exceptional damping properties of aluminum, ensures the smooth, non-resonant response necessary for seamless blending with the high-resolution Folded Motion tweeter. An added benefit of aluminum is its outstanding thermal conduction capability which allows cones to serve as efficient heat sinks for the voice coil.
  • Stiff Midrange Suspension: To deliver accuracy in the critical midrange, the dedicated midrange driver features a specially engineered "stiff" suspension. Stiffening the suspension (the spider and surround) raises the driver's resonant frequency and optimizes its performance to achieve a natural roll-off and inherently operate within an ideal range for a mid-frequency reproduction.
  • Deliberate Low-Mounted Woofer Design: Both bass woofers are positioned low in the cabinet and close to the floor. This deliberate design addresses a phenomenon known as floor bounce where sound reflected off the floor (from drivers positioned high on a cabinet), and those aimed directly at the listener interfere with each other. Without addressing these issues, listeners would experience bloated bass and massive increases and decreases in sound levels throughout critical midrange frequencies. Through careful crossover design and driver positioning, the floorstanding Motion Series loudspeaker delivers a flat, balanced response through the bass and midrange regions. Such considerations are crucial when seeking to achieve accurate reproduction of vocals and instruments such as kick drums.

Proprietary Vojtko Crossover Network: The MartinLogan Motion Series speaker features a proprietary Vojtko crossover network network using polypropylene and low-DF electrolytic capacitors, custom-wound inductors, and thermal and current protection. Vojtko crossovers are named after MartinLogan's chief audio technologist, Joe Vojtko. His unique approach to crossover design is as big of a part of the "MartinLogan Sound" as are electrostatic and Folded Motion thin-film driver technologies. A Vojtko crossover isn't so much a set of design requirements as it is a philosophy. Vojtko crossovers are designed in such a way that all drivers are kept within their optimal frequency range and balanced with one another. The drivers themselves are as much a part of a Vojtko crossover as are capacitors and resistors. Before the design of any crossover begins, drivers are carefully selected or designed to operate within a very intentional frequency range and with precise and predictable performance parameters. Vojtko crossovers are always built from high-quality parts, and care is taken to avoid overly complex topologies (a straightforward objective due to the careful selection of woofers and tweeters). The final and most critical aspect of a Vojtko Crossover is its final voicing is conducted in a space that is indicative of a real-world environment, so the MartinLogan Motion Series speakers will sound their best in real-world rooms.

Bass Reflex MDF Cabinet: The MartinLogan Motion Series loudspeaker utilizes a solid built cabinet design to eliminate fidelity robbing vibrations. The speaker cabinet is constructed from 18mm (0.7") MDF with 31mm (1.2") thick front baffles and additional internal bracing to further reduce cabinet resonance. On the back of the cabinet are two rear-firing ports which help the speaker be more efficient and have better bass performance. The speaker enclosure comes with a fabric wrapped magnetic grille. The cabinet is available in three finishes - gloss black, matte white, and red walnut.

Dual Gold-Plated Binding Posts: The Motion 60XTi is outfitted with two sets of gold-plated binding posts allowing youto bi-amp or bi-wire the floorstanding speaker. These binding posts ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG). The binding posts are gold-plated for excellent audio signal transfer and resistance to corrosion.

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Rubber & Spike Feet: The Motion 60XTi floorstanding loudspeaker comes with both rubber & spike feet. The rubber feet come pre-installed on the bottom of the speaker cabinet and are ideal for hardwood, tile, laminate, and vinyl flooring. The rubber feet can be removed and the included stabizer bars and spike feet can be screwed into the bottom of the speaker cabinet. The stablizer bars and spike feet are designed for carpeted floors.

  • Dimensions with Rubber Feet: 9.0625" (w) x 46.1875" (h) x 15.5625" (d)
  • Dimensions with Stablizer Bars & Spike Feet: 11.4375" (w) x 47.625" (h) x 15.5625" (d)

Notes:

  • Although the speaker is designed to deliver a superb sonic performance when placed close to a wall, you may notice improved imaging and detail if you are able to place the speaker 2' to 3' from the rear wall and 2' or more from the side walls.
  • To achieve better stereo imaging, you should aim (or "toe-in") a pair of speakers toward the primary listening position.

Motion Series: MartinLogan's Motion Series incorporate Folded Motion tweeter technology, high performance aluminum cone woofers, custom tune crossovers, and solidly built MDF cabinets to deliver refined sound with an ultra-wide dynamic range for stunning clarity and low distortion. The Motion Series consists of three floor-standing loudspeakers (MO20i / MO40i / MO60XTi), two bookshelf loudspeakers (MO15i / MO35XTi), and two center channel loudspeakers (MO30i / MO50XTi).

Optional Powered Subwoofer: Add on an optional MartinLogan powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) for bigger and deeper bass response when listening to your movie and music soundtracks.

Customer Q&A

Q
Will a subwoofer be needed or is there enough bass alone with these speakers?
[ Nick elliot  Jun 02, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
This will be high subjective. These speakers play pretty low for tower speakers, and you may be satisfied with their bass extension. However, a subwoofer will produce more impactful, and more substantial bass, which some people do prefer!

Q
I am seeing discussion that these speakers may need an amp or receiver with ample power. Is there a current AVR receiver that you would recommend for these speakers?
[ Eric  Feb 09, 2022 ]

A
I have enjoyed these speakers for just over a year, powered by on older Sony PM-5003 rated at only 36 watts per channel. I am sure a more powerful amp would be an upgrade, but I think the speakers are efficient enough to allow an excellent experience, a claim I read in a couple of reviews prior to purchase.

I have the Anthem MRX 1120 and it works fine. I think there may be a newer model out now but I doubt it changes all that much.
[ Steven  Feb 10, 2022 ]

i currently only have a denon 1700 with only 80 watts per channel and they sound great but i'm thinking of getting a denon 4700 that has 125 watts per channel or a marantz 8015 at 140 i think if i did they would sound even better
[ VERNON  Feb 10, 2022 ]
A
They were relatively efficient. I used a Marantz NR1711, and it worked great.Enter an answer to this question.

Suggest that you read the Absolute Sound review of 2016. It's not so much power because these speakers are exceptionally efficient, but speed that they need. I would suggest a Parasound A23+ or the NAD C-298 and they both work wonderfully well. These speakers are a somewhat unrecognized gem and to get anything comparable in performance, you would need to spend 7 to 10k. Seriously!
[ Ernie  Feb 10, 2022 ]

Asking for a ecommendation for a specific receiver is the wrong way to approach this in my opinion. I can recommend a receiver for a few hundred dollars up to a few thousand. Either will work fine. How loud do you plan to listen? More volume requires mor power. What do you listen to? Heavy metal and some classical require more power. In the case of heavy metal, and like the cannons in the 1812 overture, not as much power as ample headroom (short duration power). Chamber music, soft jazz, and the like require much less power, especially if you listen at moderate levels. These are excellent speakers and will perform well at 30 or 40 wpc. They can handle up to 400wpc. I use 100wpc class A monoblocks. They can easily drive these speakers to uncomfortable levels. I suggest you look at receivers in the 50 to 100wpc range and look to your budget more than specific recommendations. More power is nice and class A is expensive. Worth it in my opinion but I do nothing but listen when I'm in the mood (often). If you don't listen that way, then class A probably isn't worth it to you. Any receiver by a mainstream manufacturer will power these adequately. Read reviews, go to a stereo store thast has these speakers in the showroom and listen to as few receivers. Look to other features in the receiver that you want, then decide. Hope this helped.

Q
I would like to power these with a Onkyo Integra M504 amp and P304 pre amp. will the 4ohm rating on the speakers be a issue with this amp? Thanks
[ Don  Nov 30, 2021 ]
4 answers
A
as long as your amp is 4ohm stable your good .check the owners manual or on line
[ VERNON  Dec 02, 2021 ]
A
It should not be a issue, even if you use a biamp configuration. I have not bought a biamp yet but plan to. Make sure when attaching the speaker wires for non biamp you attach them to the upper posts, not the lower posts, per the instructionsthatcomewiththespeakers. I tried both ways hooking to the bottom makes the bass great but the tweeter weak. The upper posts make the speakers balanced. So I am going to get a biamp to get the full effect of them. I love the sound of them, you will be pleased with them.

I have a older Yamaha Advantage amp that has 120 watts of power and play my music very loud . The best speakers I have found are the Martin Logan period. Buy them plug them in and enjoy. I have them in the celling and center speaker as well. When people here my system they are blown away .
[ DANNY  Nov 30, 2021 ]
A
I don't believe so, probably best to ask a Crutchfield employee. I will say that I absolutely love these speakers.

Q
As they are ribbons, how often do the tweeters need to be replaced?
[ Dennis  Oct 27, 2021 ]
3 answers
A
Not sure, check with Martin Logan. Allot depends on the environment you have them in. Humidity and other factors play into the life of them. Like if you burn candles or smoke. How far away are they from a kitchen. Non vented kitchens increase the amount of oil particulates in your environment, effecting speakers by bonding to the surfaces of the speaker components, degradation of sound. In a good controlled environment they should last many years.

If you don't over power them you will never replace them, using the right amplifier is the best thing for your speakers.

Q
How far from the rear of speaker to wall should these be?
[ Mark V.  Jan 19, 2021 ]

Hi. Mine are toed-in pointed directly at the listening position. This means their backs point toward the corner of the wall in both cases. They are 22 inches from that point. They sound great, but I have not experimented much with different positions.
[ Curtis W.  Jan 20, 2021 ]
A
Martin Logan recommends 2 to 3 feet measured from the drivers(tweeter, etc...).
[ CARLOS  Jan 20, 2021 ]
A
As with most speakers, getting them 3 feet out (from the front baffle) is advisable. From the rear that might be about 2 feet. The best thing is get in your listening spot and play a tune with a good, stead bass. Try to focus just on the bass part; it should be full but also clear, not boomy. If it's not, move it a couple inches back and/or forward and listen again. Keep the speaker away from a corner, too. This process takes a while, but once you get it right, you'll really be glad.

Q
Do you have to break in Martin Logan 60xti speakers???
[ Rick  Dec 29, 2020 ]
7 answers
A
I broke mine in and it helped a lot. Here's how to speed up the process. Wire the speakers so that one is normal (red to red, black to black) but the other is reversed (red to black, black to red). Then push the speakers together so the fronts are about 1 inch apart. Put on a tune with very good bass or pink noise. You can cover the speakers with a comforter and then let them play all night. Not too loud, but decent volume. They will largely cancel out one another, so it will seem quiet. But this will work the cones and get them limber. You can add up to 80 hours very quickly this way. If you read about speaker burn in techniques on good websites, you'll see this is a common technique. Very useful if you are trying out speakers and want to hear what they *really* sound like before making a decision.

I have with mine, two articles I read recommended it. The sound is changing to the better, much warmer midrange and high with no loss of clarity.
[ JAMES  Dec 30, 2020 ]
A
Yes as with all new speakers. Martin Logan says 80hrs at 90db. I've found a good full potential is around 280hrs for any good quality speakers. Most important the amplifier is good quality and to not overdrive the power.
[ DALE  Dec 30, 2020 ]
A
They do change with time. I am unable to say how long, as I have not kept track of the time I have used them. So yes I think they do. Hope this helps
[ Samuel  Dec 29, 2020 ]
A
I ran some cd's through them at moderate volume and let the radio play day and night at moderate volume for well over 72 hours they ask for. After that I played them to test, I did not personally like the sound and returned them, but every situation is different. The ribbon tweeters were vary accurate but too harsh for me. Also the bass did not hit hard at all compared to some 20 year old speakers I have with (2) 8' woofers. They just were not alive to me.
[ David  Dec 29, 2020 ]
A
Per the manual. BREAK IN Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

Q
Would the Marantz NR1711 receiver have enough power for the Martin Logan 60XTi speakers?
[ Dale  Dec 10, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
It certainly would. No problem. I played these with 60w tube amps and they were plenty powerful enough. In my opinion, if you're going to do focused listening, these speakers deserve a better amp -- a two channel, dedicated integrated amp or separate preamp and power amp. To put it bluntly, they're too good for a multi-channel receiver (in other words, you won't really hear how great they can sound but they won't sound bad).
[ David  Dec 12, 2020 ]
A
The Martin Logan 60XTi are rated at 4 Ohms and the NR1711 can drive those at 50 watts without a problem. So nothing will explode . However , those are some nice speakers , and while I think the NR1711 is great , you might want to look at a dedicated stereo amp to power them , and another receiver with pre-outs to feed that. Or you could just accept that a difference of a few percent in THD is not going to truly make listening to your favorite music any less enjoyable and save some money ?
