MartinLogan Motion SLM Folded Motion Tweeter

The Folded Motion tweeter helps the ultra-slim Motion SLM sound like a much bigger speaker.

Folded Motion tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.

Surprisingly full sound from a super-thin design

The other key to the Motion SLM's outstanding performance is the innovative dual 4" ultra-slim mid/woofers and dual 4" passive bass radiators. The passive radiators act as pressure relief valves for the cabinet, causing the woofers to behave as if they were operating in a much larger cabinet. The result is full, dynamic sound that makes movies and music more enjoyable and engaging. The high-gloss cabinet is under 2" thick including the supplied bracket, so you can wall-mount it next to even the thinnest flat-panel TVs and maintain a sleek, elegant look.

Nice units! I recommend.

Winthrop from Porstmouth, NH on 12/4/2018

Bought them for my Front R&L Speakers. Very clean, clear and crisp. Definitely needs a good sub woofer as low frequency bandwidth is limited. Hesitated to buy the Definitive Technology Mythos, but they were more expensive and nit as thin. I with pair them with Definitive Technology Gem rear speakers.

Pros: Clear particularly for voices.

Cons: Low end frequencies

Excellent sound for price point

Fred from Overland Park, KS on 2/15/2018

All of my speakers in areas of my house are audiophile quality, including $20,000 Wilson Audio speakers for my listening room. These Martin Logan are exceptional quality for the price point. I chose the SLM vs the SLM XL for the form factor, and do not regret getting the smaller size. These speakers do require a subwoofer. I purchased the ML 700, which I am reviewing separately.

Pros: Ease of Install. Great Sound.

Cons: None

I use these speakers as my left and right front speakers. I needed a set of speakers with as small of a footprint as possible as my floor standing speakers were too much in the way. I have been using them for movies and music paired with a subwoofer. They sound great in both settings. The highs are very crisp and clear. For bass you will want to add a sub in your setting to get a full unstrained coverage between the highs and lows. Considering form and function, these are top notch.

Amazing rear surrounds

Marcus from Tampa, FL on 2/21/2017

Using a pair of these as rear surrounds as I needed a flat speaker to sit on the floor behind 4 home theatre recliners. Not an ideal placement for any speaker but since my seats are right up against a back wall and mounting them on the back wall is not an option (per my wife) these fit the bill. This is the third different pair of speakers I've tried for my unusual rear surround criteria and they are perfect. Their wide dispersion and long platform provide excellent, seamless sound integration with my Atmos 5.1.4 setup. Have them crossed over at 100 facing straight up toward ceiling. Of the 3 different manufacturers, these ML are the first to blend in perfectly without it appearing and sounding like I just tossed some speakers behind my seats. Almost a shame to just use them as rear surrounds considering their potential.

Pros: Seamless integration with 5.1.4 Atmos as rear surrounds

They are small but they sound great. I also have the XL's. I am very surprised how well they fill up my 18x 25 family room that is open to the kitchen and dining room with sound.

Great Sound !

Scott B from San Francisco, CA on 6/22/2016

Let me tell you. I don't review products often but just had to put a note in about these speakers. First do not shy away because they are flat. I put in a number of movies and they sound great. They have a lot of base for flats and look great. If you have a small space do not shy away from these speakers. My only somewhat of an issue is the use as a center speaker. For some reason, they just don't work great in a large room as a center speaker. They sound a little empty. I would say they may be ok in a smaller space to use as Center. I would get a traditional center speaker if your space will let you.

Pros: They are top notch for a left and right. They are a decent price for a midrange speaker. They are very light, they don't take up much room. The speakers are very well built. I was very impressed with the quality (except the stands). I would buy them again for left and rights. They also look great.

Cons: I don't think they work great as a center. The stand is a little hard to put on, the screws don't really go in well. I had to get different screws to get the stand to work. The stands I don't think are that well built, seemed a little on the cheapish side.

Great Sound Martin Logan SLM

Tim 345 from Pennsylvania on 2/11/2015

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great sound and wall mounting is quick and easy. I purchased these for my FL and FR channels in my system using a phantom center and they perform amazingly. I used the automatic setup of my receiver and it set there low end at 90 hz even though they're only rated for 110 hz. I have yet to hear any clipping or distortion from them with this setup. That was my main concern being there low end frequency but they perform quite well. I definitely recommend these speakers if you are in need of a wall mount speaker and limited on space, they will definitely fool you for how thin they are and the sound that comes from them. I am going to be purchasing another pair in the future for my two surround channels.

Pros: Sound quality is incredible Easy wall mounting Very slim and complement the tv's of today well

Product Research

2-Way Speaker/Passive Radiator Design: The secret to the Motion SLM ultra-slim speaker's outstanding performance is the innovative dual 4" ultra-slim fiber cone woofers and dual 4" high-velocity passive bass radiators, paired with a Folded Motion tweeter to create smooth, refined sound with stunning dynamic range and excellent clarity.

  • Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter helps give the Motion SLM ultra-slim loudspeaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x80°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
  • Dual Ultra-Slim Woofers/Passive Bass Radiators: Two 4" paper cone woofers are coupled with two 4" paper cone passive radiators to provide rich, detailed midrange and midbass that complement MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter perfectly.

Precision Crossovers: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the high frequency driver (tweeter) and the midbass drivers (woofers), the Motion SLM loudspeaker features a precision 2600Hz crossover utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.

Ultra-Slim Cabinet: The high-gloss black ultra-slim cabinet is only 1.875" deep, for a total wall protrusion of 2.0" with the included wall mount bracket. Hidden discretely underneath the grille, the drivers are held securely in place by a solid, black-anodized brushed aluminum baffle.

Spring-Post Connectors: The MartinLogan Motion SLM speaker features two spring-post connectors to attach your speaker wire. The spring-posts will accept bare wire (16- to 12-gauge) and pin-connectors. The rubber caps on the spring-post connectors must be removed to use banana plugs.

Applications: The Folded Motion tweeter has an 80° x 80° dispersion pattern, which allows the Motion SLM ultra-slim speaker to sound exactly the same in a horizontal or vertical orientation, making them perfect for Left-Center-Right (LCR) system applications. Or, use them as rear surround speakers. Because of its ultra-slim design, the Motion SLM is perfect for wall-mounting next to your flat-panel television.

Note: This speaker is not magnetically shielded and therefore should not be placed directly beside or atop a CRT television.

Mounting Options: The MartinLogan SLM loudspeaker can be wall mounted next to your flat-panel TV using the keyhole slot on the back of the speaker and the included wall-mount bracket. The speaker can be mounted vertically or horizontally (for center-channel application) on your wall. While MartinLogan created the Motion SLM to wall mount next to a flat-panel TV, that's not its only application. Also, included with the ultra-slim speaker is a curved black base to allow them to sit vertically on a shelf, stand, or equipment cabinet. In addition, the speaker includes two "kick-stands" that attach to the back of the cabinet that allow you rest the loudspeaker horizontally on a flat surface and use it as a center-channel speaker. Dimensions of speaker:

  • Wall-Mounted: 6.4375" (w) x 25.3125" (h) x 2.0" (d)
  • Vertical Base: 9.75" (w) x 26.5" (h), 6.75" (d)
  • Horizontal Kick Stands: 25.3125" (w) x 6.4375" (h) x 3.875" (d)
Note: The logo on the grille is magnetic and can move and rotate to the proper atheistically pleasing location in any orientation.

Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

5 questions already asked

Can anyone say what is the top and bottom of these speakers? There doesn't seem to be any markings for proper orientation when wall mounting or attaching the base.
[ Robert  Mar 09, 2019 ]
1 answer
There is no designated top or the bottom. The speaker connection is on one side of the speaker. Based on how your cable is coming into the speaker you can decide which side you want to keep the connection. Mine is mounted on the wall and I kept the speaker connection on the sides with the least visible.
