About the JBL EON718S

Boost the bass

Your JBL EON speakers may work fine by themselves in small to medium rooms, but when it's time for the full band to step up and play the loud gigs, or you need a bigger beat for your DJ setup, you'll want to add one or two JBL Pro EON 718S powered subwoofers to your system. Each EON 718S sub features an 18" woofer and a built-in amp that puts out up to 1,500 watts of power and sound pressure levels up to 131 dB, so you can be sure you'll feel the bass as well as hear it throughout most venues. Pairing two EON 718S subs with a couple of EON Series powered speakers will create a powerful, full-range PA system that'll be able to handle those larger venues and even outdoor shows.

Tough and durable

The low-frequency driver in the EON 718S is the same one that JBL uses in their top-of-the-line concert arrays, so you can be sure it'll put out high-powered bass with low distortion, having proven its toughness on the road by standing up to years of touring. A built-in dynamic limiter ensures that any unexpected overloads won't damage the sub. Digital signal processing helps integrate the sub's performance with other speakers so it can play bass as loud and clean as possible. JBL covered the EON 718S enclosure with their tough DuraFlex™ finish, so this sub will survive the normal bumps and bangs of life on the road and play reliably on the job every night. The enclosure also features a pole socket so you can mount your EON speaker on a standard speaker pole above the sub, for a small onstage footprint and good audience coverage.

Product Research

Features

Powered PA Speaker: The EON718S is a portable powered PA subwoofer that's part of the JBL EON700 Series of PA speakers. It's comprised of a single 18" subwoofer driver housed in a heavy-duty enclosure that's designed to easily handle the rigors of the road. The PA subwoofer is powered by a 750 watt RMS (1500W peak) Class-D integrated power amplifier. This combination of driver and amplification delivers exceptional headroom with power to spare.

Rugged Enclosure w/ Carry Handles: The JBL EON718S features a rugged 18mm 15-ply birch enclosure that's coated in duraflex paint, for added durability and resistance to bumps and scuffs. A full screen-backed steel grille offers additional protection for both the woofer. Two ergonomic handles are provided for transport. The EON718S weighs 81.6 lbs.

Inputs/Outputs:

  • Combo Inputs: The rear panel provides XLR/1/4" combination jacks for each of the subwoofer's two input channels (CH1 & CH2). The combo jacks accept a standard 3-pin XLR or a 1/4" TRS plug, both balanced or unbalanced.
  • XLR Pass Thru: A balanced XLR pass-thru connector for each input enables simple "daisy-chaining" of additional EON powered speakers if more coverage and level is required.

Controls & Indicators: In addition to the aforementioned Inputs and Outputs, the rear panel also includes the following:

  • Power: Push-button for turning the subwoofer On/Off. A corresponding LED indicator lights when the unit is On.
  • Front-Panel Power Indicator: A front-panel power indicator illuminates Green to indicate the EON718S is powered on.
  • LCD Display & Push-Dial: Used for navigating and selecting menu options.
  • Back: Reverts back to the previous menu option.
  • Limit: The Limit LED illuminates to indicate that the system is approaching clipping. The threshold for this is actually about 2dB below clipping. An occasional flickering of this on the loudest peaks is acceptable. If the LED is on for more that the duration of brief dynamic peaks, the speaker is being over-driven.

Bluetooth Control App & Audio Streaming: The JBL Pro Connect App (Bluetooth 5.0), available for iOS and Android, lets you remotely control the EON718S speaker's master volume, save and recall EQ presets, and adjust the user definable parametric EQ.

EQ Presets: Pre-engineered selectable system EQ presets are provided to assist in optimizing the system to your application and acoustic environment. 7 EQ presets are provided along with a Custom preset that allows you to save any adjustments to the 7 EQ presets.

  • Flat: A flat-tuned subwoofer preset
  • 80Hz: Sets the crossover point at 80Hz
  • 100Hz: Sets the crossover point at 100Hz
  • 120Hz: Sets the crossover point at 120Hz
  • Wall: Provides optimized tuning for placing the subwoofer close to a wall
  • Corner: Provides optimized tuning for placing the subwoofer in a corner
  • Cardioid: Adjusts the tuning, delay, and polarity of the subwoofer for use in Cardioid mode. Cardioid mode is used when two EON718S' are placed side-by-side or stacked, with the subwoofers facing opposite directions. This mode helps subwoofer performance become more directional and easier to control. Cardioid mode can provide up to 3-5dB of low-frequency extension on the audience side and up to 10-17dB of reduction on the rear/stage side.

Parametric EQ: An 8-band Parametric EQ is available via the JBL Pro Connect app for fine-tuning your sound with the following settings:

  • Frequency: Lets you select a frequency for each of the eight bands; range from 20Hz to 20kHz.
  • Gain: Lets you adjust the level of the selected Frequency; range -9dB to +9dB.
  • Width (Q): Determines how many frequencies around the selected one will also be boosted or attenuated; range 0.01 (narrowest) to 16 (widest).

Note: The 8-band parametric EQ is not available in the EON718S Settings Menu and can only be adjusted using the JBL Pro Connect app through a Bluetooth-connected smartphone or tablet.

Additional Settings: Additional settings for controlling your sound are available in the Settings Menu.

  • Time Align: Lets you delay the subwoofer output by up to 50ms when using the EON718S with additional speakers at different distances.
  • Polarity: Reverses the polarity of the subwoofer when set to On. Off indicates standard polarity.
  • LCD Contrast: Adjust the rear-panel LCD contrast level between 0-100%.
  • Factory Settings: Resets all settings to factory default.
  • Firmware Version: Displays current firmware version.

LED Indicators: The EON718S features four LEDs to indicate the speaker's status.

  • Power:
  • Signal/Clip: Two Signal LEDs, one for each input channel, will illuminate Green to indicate a usable audio signal is present and will illuminate Red if the signal clips.
  • Limit: The Limit LED (Red) illuminates to indicate that the system is approaching clipping. The threshold for this is actually about 2dB below clipping. An occasional flickering of this on the loudest peaks is acceptable. If this LED is on for more that the duration of brief dynamic peaks, the speaker is being over-driven.

Mounting Options: The EON718S is designed for floor or stage mounting. Four rubber feet along with four foot indentations on the top of the sub allow multiple EON718S' to be stacked on top of each other. An M20 threaded socket lets you pole-mount a full-range JBL EON speaker on top of the subwoofer.

Placement Recommendations: The following guidelines will help you achieve optimum sound wherever you use your EON loudspeakers.

  • Raise Speakers: For best results try to get the high frequency horn at least 2-4' above the heads of the audience. If the speakers are too low, the people in the back of the audience will not receive the best quality sound.
  • Place Speakers Between the Mics & Audience:  Feedback occurs when the microphones pick up sound from the speakers and "feed" the sound back through
the sound system. If space is limited, point the speakers away from the microphones to reduce feedback.
  • Locate Speakers Away From Turntables:  Low-frequency feedback occurs when the output of the speaker is picked up by the tone arm of the turntable
and is re-amplified. A heavy, solid turntable base and shock mounting can also reduce this type of feedback in DJ applications.
  • Use More Speakers in Large or Highly Reverberant Spaces: Spreading speakers throughout these spaces will produce much better sound than trying to compensate with loudness level or equalization. For very long distances, the use of another set of speakers with time delay is recommended.
  • Stand Speakers Upright for PA/Tilt the Speakers for Stage Monitoring: Upright stance provides even coverage over a wide area. EON speakers are also designed with two slanted positions for stage monitoring applications.
