Our take on the Whirlwind "CONNECT" Series EDB-1

Whirlwind's simple-yet-effective EDB-1 direct box gives you versatile options for connecting your instrument to a mixer or computer audio interface.

Whirlwind's simple-yet-effective EDB-1 direct box gives you versatile options for connecting your instrument to a mixer or computer audio interface.

In live performance situations, a direct box (also sometimes called a "DI box" or just "DI") can come in handy for mixing the sound of a bass guitar or another electric instrument without having to put a mic on the player's amplifier onstage. Or it can be used to reduce AC ground loop noise. In a recording setting, a direct box lets you cleanly input high-impedance instrument-level signals into your USB interface or mixer. A loop-through 1/4" output allows flexible options for monitoring your performance.

Product Highlights:

Overview: The Whirlwind EDB1 is a part of the "Connect" series of economy direct boxes. The EDB1 converts a line or instrument level unbalanced signal to low impedance balanced mic level.

Input/Outputs: The EDB1 has a single 1/4" input with a 1/4" and male XLR output:

  • Input: This 1/4" input jack comes from the output of the source device. The source may be any type of musical instrument or amplifier speaker output.
  • Outputs: The 1/4" output is wired parallel with the 1/4" input as a "Y" connection or "loop through" from the input. The male XLR jack provides a balanced low impedance (150Ω) signal for connection to balanced, low-Z equipment, such as a mixing console or workstation.
Note: In speaker mode, the EDB1 does not supply a proper amplifier load required by most tube-type amplifiers, so you must not use a tube amp's speaker output alone with the EDB1. You should also have a speaker or appropriate dummy load connected to avoid possible amplifier damage.

0/20dB/40dB Pad: A 3-way switch is provided on one end that engages a pad. Most instruments will operate properly when set to the "0" position. For very "hot" instrument signals, the switch should be set to the "-20dB" position. You should set the switch to "-40dB" when connecting to the speaker output of an amplfier.

Ground/Lift Switch: The EDB1 has a toggle switch on one end that disconnects the ground between the input and the XLR output when set to the Lift position. This helps to eliminate hum and buzz in the signal. In the Gnd position, the ground remains connected.

  • Frequency Response: 20Hz - 20kHz (±1dB)
  • Impedance Ratio (input to output): 133:1
  • Level Change (input to output): -20dB
  • Pad: provides 0dB, -20dB, -40dB additional attenuation
  • Dimensions: Width: 3.967", Height: 1.72", Depth: 3.729"
