Overview

Our take on the Audio-Technica ATH-A550Z

Audio-Technica makes some of the best-reviewed headphones we carry. I haven't gotten tried the ATH-A550Z headphones, but I've heard from customers who have. They report exactly what I would expect from this company: detailed sound across a wide-frequency range, and super-accurate imaging. And the 53mm drivers help produce a larger soundstage than you find in most closed-back headphones. I'm familiar with the 3D wing system headband, and I personally like it a lot — it doesn't require a lot of adjusting, and it almost feels like the headphones are floating on your head.

big room sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Haven't worn headphones in a while, and it's taking some effort to warm up to these. Putting them on is like walking into an echo chamber, so much presence and sound space. I feel like I'm on stage with the band, but it sounds like an enormous room. This is the first time I've sensed "burn-in" that they say some equipment needs: the first few tracks with vocals sounded very distant and soft, but later at night I had Prince and Stevie W. on, and they were pumping - amazing. Jazz and R&B sound huge, great sound spread, tons of bass. Classical is very rich, but distant. Phones are very comfortable, easy to wear, get a little warm. Blocks out everything else in the world, nice to escape, I could stay in this headphone-room for a very long time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Compared to more inexpensive headsets, these present a thrilling expanse of the soundstage. One can (even with reduced hearing as with me) hear positional differences between the instruments in an orchestra. That is wonderful because with a cheaper headset I found it difficult to even identify instruments. With the AT, I can now hear highs and lows unavailable with cheaper sets and bookshelf (computer) speakers. I have not compared the ATs to other mid to high priced headsets but these compare very favorably to my memory of my Stax which were very high end back when I bought them. My head is large and the ATs are physically comfortable which is, literally, a great relief. Highly recommended.

Sounds great, Looks great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these headphones primarily for my digital piano. Love how they sound. Only wished my external piano speakers sounded this nice. Love the look of these headphones. I look pretty professional with them on, even though I'm teaching myself how to play. Hopefully one day I'll come to approaching a Bill Evans style. Not too crazy about the wing head support/band. But they stay pretty secure to your head, just don't have that feeling. I went to these around ear type phones from on ear types because i thought they would block out more ambient noise but these don't. Actually sounds like more ambient noise intrudes. However the sound quality just overpowers the ambient noise. I would certainly purchase akg headphones again, but with the traditional head band. The packaging was just WOW. I've never seen such packaging in my life. Kudos to Audio Technica. Very nice.

Pros: Sound quality Appearance Packaging

Cons: My minor gripes are not a deal breaker

These over-ear headphones have large drivers that are tuned to accurately reproduce extreme low and high frequencies. They have an attached 10' cable with a 3.5mm plug and a 3.5mm-to-1/4" adapter. The A550Z headphones are ideal for studio and live work, or personal listening.

Drivers: The large 53mm large-aperture drivers feature bobbin-wound voice coils with copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW) for superior performance and wide frequency response. The top-mounted PCB gives you smoother airflow and precise diaphragm movement, while the Double Air Damping system (DADS) augments the deep bass.

Comfort Features: The headphones feature Audio-Technica's proprietary 3D wing support system, which provides an improved fit and greater comfort for long listening sessions. The closed-back design helps keep out unwanted ambient noise, while the premium, soft earpads gently surround your ear to provide the proper seal.
