Our take on the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H4

Style and comfort don't always go hand in hand — think of the last time you tried on jeans or shoes. So it is pretty remarkable that Bang & Olufsen's Beoplay H4 wireless headphones are among the best-looking and perhaps the most comfortable over-ears I've ever tried.

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H4 wireless headphones

The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H4 have a clean, symmetrical design that's pleasing to both the eye and touch.

High-fashion, feel-good headphones

Style and comfort don't always go hand in hand — think of the last time you tried on jeans or shoes. So it is pretty remarkable that Bang & Olufsen's Beoplay H4 wireless headphones are among the best-looking and perhaps the most comfortable over-ears I've ever tried.

A sturdy, elegant design

The H4s have a sturdy frame and earcup sliders made of aluminum. Their plush earpads are lined with soft leather. These headphones felt light in my hands, and I could almost forget I was wearing them after a while.

Wireless freedom

Bluetooth headphones in general are pretty liberating — you can listen without connecting a cord to your phone. But these easy-going headphones were extra pleasant because of their super-comfortable fit. In the morning, I could throw them on, turn on a podcast, and move around freely to make coffee or breakfast.

Smooth, detailed sound

Of course you can only enjoy headphones if they sound good, too. B&O's sound signature is a good match for the relaxed fit of the Beoplay H4s. You don't get the extreme, bass-heavy sound you might expect from some modern headphones. Instead, you get a smooth, midrange-focused sound profile with detailed highs.

Bang & Olufsen H4 headphones on-ear controls

I found the on-ear controls very easy to use.

My listening impressions

I started my work day with a J-Dilla mixtape of instrumental, jazz-infused hip-hop. I followed it up with the Isley Brothers' Givin' it Back album, then sampled the new Japandroids rock album Near to the Wild Heart of Life. The headphones remained even-keeled, letting the different music styles dictate the mood. I honestly lost track of time before I realized it was lunchtime. When I pulled them off, there was no sense of strain or fatigue on my ears — a testament to the both the satisfying sound and well-padded fit.

On-ear controls that you can figure out quickly

Three tactile buttons on the right earcup control music, calls, and voice commands (like Siri® or Google Now). Sometimes I fumble with on-ear controls like these, but B&O included a clever design touch. There's a raised bump on the center button, so you can quickly locate the correct button without having look at it.

Good sound, BUT.......

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like the sound, fit, and convenience. But, the "instructions" are worthless as were the B&O response to my 3 emails requesting help and information. Crutchfield tech support solved my problems. If not for that, I would have returned the 2 that I purchased.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: Worthless instructions, very poor B&O support

Awesome Sound, Pillowy Comfort

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

AWESOME! I finally found the pair of wireless headphones that appeal to my ears!! Clear sound. ample and clear bass. App on phone lets users dial a sound that is even more pleasant than just the standard setting. I have mine set on mid-way up the Warmth/Excite settings for at work in the office. The cushions on the ear cups are very comfortable. Provides a good seal without much pressure on the side of my head, especially since I wear glasses all the time. Can't go wrong with these headphones!!

Pros: Clear Sound Great bass light weight very comfortable ear cups

Cons: On and off button took a bit of time to learn since it will turn off after so many minutes of media being paused.

Best choice for the money

Great set of headphones! I compared them to the Bose Quiet Comfort 35s and these have noticeably better base, are more efficient , and just as comfortable. They don't have noise canceling, but still block out enough sound for me . The only negative is they don't have a case . So that will cost you another 20 bucks.

Pros: Pristine sound , great bass, comfortable.

Cons: No case

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The B&O PLAY H4 headphones are an exceptionally great top of the line product. They produce superb sound, and are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. I especially like the style and professional design. I selected them above Bose after contacting Bose Technical Support concerning the "feedback" problems they are experiencing with their top of the line product. To their credit, they acknowledged the problem, and stated that they are working on a solution. I could not be more pleased with my choice of B&O, and the support and service I received from Crutchfield.

Pros: Superb Sound Comfort Quality Design Ease of setup

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound, quality and workmanship. I'm particularly impressed with the clean and accurate reproduction of acoustic instruments, in addition to jazz or classical. I would note that the purchase does not include a case, but these are readily available from a variety of suppliers.

Just outstanding...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am extremely pleased with these headphones. First of all, they are the most comfortable ones I've ever owned, by a long shot. The lamb skin earcups are beyond comfortable and the padding on the headband combine to give you the sense of forgetting you are wearing one of the most tonally accurate listening devices available. The overall balance of frequency response is outstanding. I'm guessing there might be better headphones out there, but the sonic satisfaction derived from these B&O H4 phones is simply amazing. Full, rich bass lay a solid foundation for ultra detailed midrange and razor clean highs. Every time I put these on I discover new detail and enjoyment from my music collection. The pairing is simple and solid, with an amazing reach of Bluetooth signal strength, I've gone as far as 30-40 feet away from the Bluetooth signal source before losing any connectivity. Amazing! If you are searching for a quality pair of headphones, with avant-garde design and value acomfortable fit, these may be the ones for you, they certainly were for me.

Pros: Many

Cons: None

Great headphones, lightweight with excellent sound reproduction. while lacking noise reduction, these are meant for reproduction of the sound and not blanking out sounds...

My previous answer of "No" was INCORRECT. The CORRECT answer is "YES, IF YOU PURCHASE THE WIRES TO CONNECT THEM FOR USE WITH TV OR ANYTHING MORE THAN APPROXIMATELY 3 FEET AWAY. I apologize for the previous incorrect reply. [ BILL  Jan 10, 2018 ]
If you mean wired capability, then yes they do. But I suggest buying your own cable/wire because the one that comes with these is extremely short. But I gotta say these are great headphones. They sound great, the bluetooth works flawlessly, & they are so comfortable and fit wonderfully. Some of the best fitting headphones I've worn. [ TERRY  Jan 08, 2018 ]
Yes, comes with a cord. [ DAVID  Jan 04, 2018 ]
Yes, audio cord 1.2 m with 3.5mm jack [ John  Jan 04, 2018 ]
No, but they are great wireless. [ BILL  Jan 03, 2018 ]
Yes comes with a wire. Works when battery runs out. [ Brian  Jan 03, 2018 ]
Yes, they do. They come with an optional wired cord that you can use, or you can use the bluetooth option that they are equipped with. [ Nathan  Jan 03, 2018 ]
hi John.... I have an iPhone 6 and the Bluetooth connection is solid, consistent and trouble free. I would assume that the iPhone 6s+ Bluetooth connection would be very similar, but my experience with the iPhone 6 is my only reference. Good luck, Kevin [ Kevin  Apr 27, 2017 ]
i own the iPhone 6s, connectivity has been error free including my iPad. I see no reason there should be connectivity issues with the 6s+, great headphones. [ John  Apr 27, 2017 ]
