Our take on the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H9i

I use the word “luxury” to describe the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H9i headphones, in part because they sport the company's signature stylish looks. But there's also real substance here. These wireless noise-cancelers are made from premium parts that give them a first-class feel. And B&O loaded them up with modern features to make on-the-go listening a real treat.

Beoplay H9i headphones

The Beoplay H9i headphones offer convenient touch controls for music, calls, and noise cancellation.

Attractive headphones that add steak to the sizzle

I use the word “luxury” to describe the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H9i headphones, in part because they sport the company's signature stylish looks. But there's also real substance here. These wireless noise-cancelers are made from premium parts that give them a first-class feel. And B&O loaded them up with modern features to make on-the-go listening a real treat.

Music plays wirelessly from your phone via Bluetooth, and B&O's active noise cancellation helps knock out external noise. The company recently tweaked their noise-canceling technology so that it better blocks the sound of human voices. A rechargeable battery provides up to 18 hours of wireless listening with noise cancellation.

A sturdy, elegant design

I haven't tried these headphones yet, but I did test out their predecessor, and they had a really impressive, lightweight build. This new version sports the same sturdy aluminum frame and plush leather earpads. But they've streamlined and softened those earpads just a bit, so that they more closely match the fit of the Beoplay H4s — perhaps the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn.

Smooth, detailed sound

Of course you can only enjoy headphones if they sound good, too. B&O has fine-tuned their sound profile for the Beoplay H9i. You don't get the extreme, "boomy" bass you might expect from some modern headphones. Instead, you get a smooth, midrange-focused sound profile with detailed highs. The bass can get deep, but it sounds more punchy than bloated.

Intuitive touch controls and Transparency Mode to keep you aware

A lot of us use noise-canceling headphones while traveling, so B&O threw in some neat features to make listening more convenient. The right ear cup has a touch panel built right in. You move your finger across the ear cup to control music and phone calls.

Someone trying to grab your attention? Tap the right ear cup to activate Transparency mode — you'll instantly hear what that person is saying.

Quality Music for You

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Always interesting to read what's important to each person as you read the reviews. But this info is important, especially when hands on is an unavailable option ... whether making the purchase or not. That being said, I didn't experience some of points made in several of the reviews. My comments as follows - 1) For me ... I'm "old school" and appreciate a manual. It's something I reference during the initial setup, but go back to review or clarify post purchase. Did this product come with a quick start menu, and in the Beoplay app ? Yes, but I was looking for a little more as I'm not that adept with electronics. So some things aren't intuitive, but once I get it I'm good. 2) Just a statement that you shouldn't try to compare B & O, with Bose. It's Apples, and Oranges ... and that's not taking anything away from Bose. I'm not an audiophile, nor a product snob, and have hearing loss. B & O does a great job taking how you hear that music to the next level. 3) General comments ... a) The noise cancelling works well for me , especially when I fly. b) The transparency feature works nicely as well. It's great just to swipe the right headphone, instead of having to pause your music to hear and or have a conversation. c) Volume control is inconsistent, so I use the app more times than not. d) Last, I suspect the speakers will require time to break in. So your music quality will appreciate in time. So if you can get past the hefty price tag, the quality of music

Pros: Quality of products used during construction, thoughtful features, and technology.

Cons: Better supporting documentation for use during set up, and post purchase.

Sound is great, the touch control is awful! In fact it seldom works at all and never when direct connected to the source. I'm returning the headphones.

Awesome product

Crutchfield customer from White Plains, NY on 5/10/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones are just amazing! I use them with an iPhone and as these phones use the Apple Lossless codec (Bluetooth) there is no loss in audio quality. The only "issue" is a bug in the current software with the proximity sensor being a bit finicky with auto-off but is being addressed by the B&O Play developers as of now. The feature can be turned off which I did while the kinks are being addressed. Overall they are very comfortable and the app offers sound profiles and sound shaping.

Cons: None really - once the software fine tuning for the proximity sensor has been released they will be flawless.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Premium design and materials and great sound sums it up. I've been a Bose QC Guy forever and lately I've noticed everyone and their mother has one when I travel. After doing some research I've concluded that the H9i gave me the best combination of uniqueness, style and great sound with noise cancellation.

Pros: Style, premium materials, great sound

Cons: Higher price than competition

Awesome Headphones

James R. from Stafford, VA on 4/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

-FIT The headphones fit a bit loose (small head); however, quite light and easy to wear for long periods. Ear cups are soft and provide enough room for my ears. -BUILD One word - quality. ice metal outer ear cups with metal leather covered headband. The ear cups swivel to the center allowing the headphones to lay flat. I don't see any plastic components. -PAIRING/CONTROLS Easy pairing process. No issues with dropped connection. The only button-on/off/Bluetooth on right ear cup. Controls use swipe/touch on inner right ear cup. The controls take a bit of getting use to and due have a lag. -SOUND The sound is full and on point. The highs are crisp and clear, and mid tones come through well. The bass can be a bit punchy but overall the headphones handle bass well. -NOISE CANCELING First noise canceling headphones. My opinion, pretty darn good. I ride a commuter train and am unable to hear exterior noise. I hear the music loud and clear. -APP BeoPlay app allows to refine sound. Simple interface with four quadrants (warm, excited, relaxed, bright) with a white circle you can move into the quadrants. You can expand white circle to create larger sound stage. The app has a battery display and basic controls. -MUSIC I have listened to below music-completely satisfied: All American Rejects Black Sabbath Boston Classical Lisa Stansfield Niel Diamond Panic at the Disco Rob Zombie Stone Temple Pilots The Razorblades

Pros: Quality build Sound BeoPlay App Replaceable Battery Weight

Cons: Cloth case only (no hard storage case)

Great design

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The quality build appears to be there.. but the pair I received only lasted 2 days. The battery can be replaced but it wouldn't allow a charge...things happen so I'm not going to zing the manufacturer or Crutchfield.. when the replacement arrives I will share further about the quality and sound..

Pros: Weight, build quality

Cons: Mind arrived basically DOA so I cannot give a thorough review until my replacements come

Great sound and features

Melody from Los Angeles, CA on 4/12/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the sound and features. These headphones seem very thoughtfully designed. I read reviews and compared these to the B&W PX and Sennheiser HD-1. I wasn't able to compare for sound quality. These had all the features I was looking for, described below in the Pros section. There were a few cons, but I'm very happy with my choice.

Pros: - Replaceable battery - Can be used wired without power (unlike PX) - ANC does not automatically turn on in any situation (unlike the Sennheiser HD-1, where ANC is on if BT is on). Note: When wired, the sound is much more dynamic if power is on. - Ear cups block a lot of noise because of the closed design. - Attractive style without being too flashy.

Cons: - The touch functions rarely work properly for me (other than swiping to hear around me, and swiping down for ANC). Luckily those are the only two things that can't be easily controlled on my phone or computer. - An annoyance is that the headphones slip sometimes, causing music to pause. The auto-pause is extremely sensitive, and I also find that these slip off my head easily even when worn tightly (which is uncomfortable). - The band of the headphones is uncomfortable after a few hours. I

Sounds Great but Uncomfortable

Dexter from Monroe Township, NJ on 3/15/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm writing this review with a heavy heart as I wanted to like these headphones, and coming from an H6 user, to say that i'm disappointed with the H9i is an understatement. I'm far from an audiophile but I can appreciate high-quality audio gear and willing to spend money as my spouse allows ??. However, one thing that I take seriously into account when buying new headphones is comfort. Say what you will about the Bose QC line's audio quality, but they're not bad at all and nothing comes close when it comes to comfort. So the likes of the B&W PX line don't appeal to me despite their superior audio features; they're not comfortable to wear especially in long periods of use. Going back to the headphone itself: the sound quality is good enough for me; I'm not going to say more than that as I feel I'm not qualified to give a more in depth analysis on its sound signature. My biggest issue is from the comfort standpoint. The earpads are not deep enough to clear the protruding driver inside the cup and it's rubbing against my ears causing discomfort/annoyance enough to cause to not have a full immersion with the content you are listening to. The headband rests on my temple that it starts to hurt a little bit even in short use (note that this is also somewhat of a problem with H6 but not as pronounced). These are huge deal breakers for me, especially when compared to the Bose QC35s that I also own. I wanted to like them, but the comfort level is not there.

Pros: - Sounds great - Awesome wireless range, no drops - Easy to pair, surprisingly usable app

Cons: - Uncomfortable - No hard case - Proximity sensors not very good - Touch controls are too finicky

Product Research

Overview: The Bang & Olufsen (B&O Play) H9i is an over-ear headphone with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth 4.2, and high-performance sound. The H9i is powered by a rechargeable battery for hours of wireless listening. The headphone comes with on-board controls for music and phone calls, a replaceable Lithium-Ion battery, audio cable, charging cable, and a soft cloth storage pouch.

Design: The Jakob Wagner-designed H9i weighs only 10.4 ounces for hours of comfort. It features 40mm electro-dynamic drivers that deliver the famous Bang & Olufsen Signature Sound. The H9i features soft lambskin leather and adaptive memory foam on the ear cushions, genuine cowhide leather on the headband, and a polished aluminum touch panel.

Touch Controls: The H9i over-ear wireless headphones feature a polished and anodized aluminum plate on the ear cup that lets you control your music, phone calls, and ANC, even with gloves on. Touch controls include play/pause (tap), volume (circular motion), next/previous (swipe forward/backward), answer call (tap), end call (long press), redial latest number (double tap), and transfer active call to smartphone (swipe). You can also control Active Noise Cancellation by swiping up (on) or down (off) on the touchpad in wireless or cabled mode.

Proximity Sensors: The H9i headphones feature proximity sensors to detect when you are wearing the headphones, and when you take them off. The sensors will automatically pause your music when you remove the headphones. Likewise, when you put them back on again, the music will automatically resume playing, right where you left off.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): The built-in ANC electronically shuts out ambient noise so you can focus on your music or phone calls. Microphones on the outside and inside of each ear cup pick up sound from your environment. These sound waves are mixed with equal, but opposite signals to cancel out the noise. If you wish to be more aware of your surroundings, you can turn off ANC by swiping down on the control panel.

Transparency Mode: If you are in a situation where you need to hear what's going on around you, you can switch on the Transparency Mode. The built-in microphones used for ANC now amplify your surroundings. You can carry on a conversation, listen to announcements at the airport or train station, or hear nearby traffic without removing your headphones.

Bluetooth: The B&O H9i features Bluetooth 4.2 that lets you listen wirelessly at a distance of approximately 33 feet (10 meters). The H9i delivers high quality sound that is in sync with your visual media.

Battery: The headphones feature a user-replaceable Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (3.7-volts, 770 mAh) that provides up to 18 hours of wireless listening via Bluetooth with ANC, 23 hours of Bluetooth only, and up to 24 hours of ANC + control. The battery can be charged in approximately 2.5 hours using the supplied Micro USB cable. Replacement batteries can be obtained from the B&O online store.

Cable: When the H9i headphones' battery is exhausted, or you're in an area where you can't listen wirelessly, you can plug the supplied 50" cable into your music source. A dual-plug airline adapter is included for listening to in-flight entertainment.

Beoplay App: You can enhance your listening experience with the free Beoplay App for Android, iOS, and watchOS. The ToneTouch feature lets you vary the tonality and sound staging to find just the right sound. Each B&O product has its own individually tuned presets, plus, you can select different listening presets to match your mood or activity. Any firmware updates for your headphones are automatically uploaded through the Beoplay App. The app is available for Android devices running version 5.0 and up, and for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS version 9.0 or later.
