About the Nest x Yale Lock with Nest Connect

Security and convenience from industry leaders
Security and convenience from industry leaders
I've been a fan of Nest since their fledgling days in the home automation world. In fact, I bought a first-gen Nest thermostat before I even bought my home in 2012. I'm excited to now introduce their latest smart home creation — a wireless door lock that marries the convenience of Nest software with the security of lock giant Yale's renowned hardware.
How does it work?
This tamper-proof, key-free deadbolt replaces the existing lock in an exterior door. It connects to your home's Wi-Fi® network through a Nest Connect (included) or a Nest Guard hub (sold separately). It comes with everything you need to do a "fresh" install, including an adjustable deadbolt to accommodate your door and frame.
The lock is powered by 4 "AA" batteries. If it loses power, you can quickly charge it with a 9-volt battery to unlock the door.

The Nest x Yale Lock includes all the hardware you need for installation, including an adjustable deadbolt.
Simple, app-based control
Use the free Nest app for Apple® or Android™ to see your lock's status, enable or disable guest access, and lock and unlock your door from anywhere — as long as your lock is connected to the internet.
Here's where the system is super-handy. Say your babysitter or dog-walker is coming over, but doesn't have a house key to get in. Instead of hiding a key under the doormat (or even worse, forgetting to leave one at all), use the app to generate one-time access codes.
You can also create a scheduled window of time in which they can enter. They'll have secure access anytime you want them to, and no access when you don't.
Easy integration with your Nest home security system
The Nest x Yale Lock works in tandem with the Nest Secure alarm system to help keep your home protected. For example, when you unlock your front door, the alarm system automatically disarms itself.
Your lock can also work with the Nest thermostat's Home/Away Assist feature to automatically lock itself when everyone's away from home.

More details on the Nest x Yale Lock with Nest Connect

Product Research
Features
Overview: The Nest x Yale Lock is a Wi-Fi enabled deadbolt lock. Nest has partnered with Yale, one of the world's best lock hardware developers, to bring you this innovative smart lock. This key-free lock lets you lock and unlock your door with a digital passcode. You can give the passcode to people you trust, instead of a key. You can also lock and unlock your door from anywhere through the Nest app. The lock connects to your Wi-Fi network through the included Nest Connect Wi-Fi extender (or an installed Nest Guard hub). The Next x Yale Lock comes with an inside lock, keypad, deadbolt, strike plate, batteries, and installation hardware.
Door Compatibility: The Nest x Yale Lock can be installed on entry doors made of wood, metal, or fiberglass. The door should be 1-3/8", 1-3/4", or 2" to 2-1/4" in thickness. This will include most standard doors. The lock hole center should be either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" from the edge of the door.
Inside Lock: The Inside Lock contains the mechanics of the lock, as well as the compartment for the four included "AA" alkaline batteries that power the lock. A thumb-turn is provided for manually locking or unlocking the deadbolt from the inside. Dimensions: Width 2.796", Height 7.03", Depth 1.557" (2.05" including thumb-turn knob).
Keypad: The Keypad is the brain of the Nest x Yale Lock. It installs on the outside of the door where your deadbolt keyhole would typically be. The keypad has ten numeric touch keys (1 through 0), the Yale logo (to wake up the lock), Back and Check buttons, and a Settings button. Warning Status and Low Battery indicators are also included. The touch keys and buttons are backlit, and are only visible when the lock is activated. To lock or unlock the Nest x Yale Lock, enter your passcode on the keypad and press the check button. Even if your Wi-Fi goes down, you can still lock and unlock the door with the keypad. Dimensions: Width 2.589", Height 4.604", Depth 0.717" (1.9" overall).
Power Requirements: The Nest x Yale Lock is powered by four "AA" alkaline batteries. Battery life is typically one year. (Rechargeable batteries are not recommended.) A 9-volt battery connection on the bottom of the keypad allows you to power the lock in case the installed batteries fail.
Nest Connect/Nest Guard: The Nest x Yale Lock will not connect to your Wi-Fi network directly. You must have a Nest Connect (included) or Nest Guard (Wi-Fi hub for Nest Secure) connected to your Wi-Fi network. The Nest x Yale Lock uses Weave, a proprietary and secure communications protocol that works with the many Nest-branded hardware. If you install more than one door lock, you may need to install another Nest Connect or Nest Guard, or install the Nest Connect halfway between your router and your lock.
Nest App: The Nest app lets you know who's coming in or going out your front door. When someone locks or unlocks the door, the Nest app can send an alert. If you have visitors that need entry to your home, you can give them a temporary passcode instead of a key, and set the times when the passcode expires. The Home/Away Assist and Auto-Lock features can be programmed to automatically lock your door when you leave. If someone tampers with the Next x Yale Lock, you'll receive a notification on the app. To give everyone in your household the ability to lock/unlock the door with the app, you should use a Family Account. The Nest app can control other Nest products at the same time, including the Next Learning Thermostat, Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, the Nest Hello door camera, and the Nest variety of security cameras. The app is compatible with Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) running iOS 10.0 or later. It is also compatible with select devices running Android (version varies with the device). The Nest application for laptops and desktop computers is available for Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X v10.9 or later, with the latest versions of Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox.

The lock installed easily and has worked great so far. It's really easy to control with the Nest app (which we already used for our thermostats), especially creating new codes for guests.
