Right out of their solid "exoskeleton" carrying case, the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 headphones were a sight to see. These cool, industrial-looking 'phones felt extremely well-built, opening from their folded position with an impressive snap of their heavy-duty hinges.

The memory foam-padded earcups and flexible headband fit snugly and comfortably. There wasn't too much pressure on any one area, even with my glasses on. They felt light and easy on my head, even as a tight seal formed around my ears. Outside chatter didn't seep in, and V-MODA's unique airflow system prevented my music from leaking out.

And man, was listening to that music fun.

Enveloping sound that works well across genres

V-MODA's 50mm dual-diaphragm driver produces a larger-than-life sound that remains well-balanced. My entire music library benefited from the tight, detailed bass and pure mids and highs. Hip-hop sub-bass had heft without muddying the mix. Plucked guitar strings on acoustic tracks were precise and quick, and vocals sounded clear across the board. A great example was Bill Withers' "Live at Carnegie Hall" album. The singer's earnest, powerful voice evoked strong emotion as it beautifully blended into the mix with the lively backing music and atmospheric applause.

Constructed to withstand the extremes

A light tap of my fingernail against the solid metal earcup plates and steel headband sliders showed me these 'phones were ultra-rugged. Of course, V-MODA put them through much more extensive testing. The M-100s pass a quality and stress assessment that's beyond military standards, so they can really take a beating. Even the included cables are reinforced with Kevlar®. You get a cable with a one-button remote and mic for taking phone calls, and another that lets you plug in another set of headphones for listening or playing DJ with a friend.

Customize your 'phones

V-MODA goes to great measures make sure the headphones fit your needs and taste. They also offer many accessories, like extra-padded ear cushions. Or add a BoomPro mic cable for video games, Skype®, or podcasting. You can even personalize the metal shields on the earcups — V-MODA will laser-engrave replacement plates with your own design or message.

Not bad cans

bob g from Indian Lake, NY on 2/27/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty nice cans. You should know, they come with 2 short cords. Also the plugs for input into headphones are made in a way that you must buy their extension. It is also very short 4'. So I had to buy yet another cord to reach my receiver. That cord does not have to be their brand. So in addition to the price of the v-moda cans, I had to spend extra for cords. On the plus side they sound really good.

Pros: Sound good

Cons: Cords are brand specific

Magnificent Headphones

Kristopher from Vancouver, WA on 4/10/2017

Very fast delivery, great sound. I haven't heard audio of such a caliber from headphones until now. Incredibly robust and built like a brick, yet flexible, light, and above all, very comfortable. Been using them for a couple days and I gotta say, I'm blown away by this product.

I don't have much to compare these headphones with. My old set were on ear and much cheaper. I love the clarity that I get with these. I listen to lots of classical and some mellow rock and roll. The stringed instruments are my favorite and I can hear the notes well. I have a fairly large head and the larger ear cups were a must. As usual Crutchfield staff were very helpful.

The M100 has a great build and quite attractive. I replaced the earcups with the XL and this makes the headphone very comfortable. The sound capability is very revealing across the frequency, which means your source for music is going to have an effect on what you hear. I have used many different sources. I believe anyone that wrote negative comments needs to look ar your source and try a different player. These benefit from a headphone amplifier. I love them

Pros: Build, sound quality

Cons: None

Great Phones.

Donald from Tonopah, NV on 5/28/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great sounding cans with a lot of cool options available. Unlike many headphones out there today that are designed for mobile devices, V-Moda has a custom COILED cable available as an option that twists and locks into the phones for home listening from your stereo components. I ordered one and like it immensely. Custom sideplates are also an option that you can check out in the link provided in the product description. For the money you spend and the options available, you'd have to spend a lot more to get better sounding headphones. V-Moda brought a great product on the market at a very fair and decent price point. They look nice too, unlike many other brands.

Pros: Great sounding cans with lots of options at a decent price.

Cons: If you order the optional coiled cord for home listening, you'll have to wait a month for V-Moda to ship it.

Great headphones

Cons: None

Very Nice for the Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I returned a set of PSB M4U 2's as the headband was incredibly uncomfortable on my head. The sound was fantastic in active mode but I just couldn't handle the discomfort. So after a couple days of research I decided to try the V-MODA's. I like them. I don't love them. The headband is very comfortable but the ear pads are kinda small. I have pretty average size ears (I think) and these are almost "on ear" rather than "over ear". That said, they sound very, very good. They are also a very easy load and my iPod lasts a longer with these than they did with the PSB's or my trusty (and still great!) Sennheiser HD 555. I think the Sennheisers are more comfortable still but they don't look nearly as cool. So if you're looking for a very good-sounding pair of headphones that won't break the bank and look great...I can recommend them highly. Fair warning that those ear cups are kinda small though and in a perfect world they would be slightly larger. If that were the case, these would be a home run in my book for the money asked.

Pros: Sound quality, looks, headband comfort, weight, build quality

Cons: Slightly uncomfortable on the ears after long periods...cups should be bigger

Cons: A little tight

Headphones that will last

Colbs from Newport News, VA on 5/15/2015

I was no audiophile, but before plugging these into my iphone, i listened to 3 different songs with my Skullcandy Titan earbuds as a control, then switched to my V-modas. Before that moment i didnt know how much different music could sound depending on the headphones you used. The bass was punchy and clean (and could be felt in my skull) and furthermore the rest of the music, vocals, guitar solos, drum beats, all felt like they were being played in a room with perfect sound characteristics (I guess recording studios fit that description) but for the first time it felt like i was hearing the clarity. The construction on these headphones is very obviously the highest of quality. They were built to last which is why everything is metal and not plastic. The leather on the earcups feels like it belonged to a lamb who moisturized its skin everyday and suprisingly to me, NONE of the black on the metal frame is showing any signs of wearing off, i thought a year and a half ago when i got them that could be a problem, but not yet. With all the gear they gave me, i can plug my headphones into my iphone and 2 other friends can plug their headphones into MY headphones and we can all watch/listen to my media! I also bought the V-moda Boom Mic off amazon and with it plugged into the spare ear cup receiver i can use these headphones as a Gaming headseat!

Pros: Durability Sound Quality Not 'Mainstream' (ahem, beats...) Has up to two splitters included Incredibly compact when folded up

Cons: The looks are modern, but i dont think they will be 'timeless' The headband slides off my small head when lying down

Best Set I've Ever Owned

Johnny Tsunami from Illinois on 5/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for an amazing set of headphones that will truly last the test of time, look no further than V-Moda's Crossfade M-100 headphones. They certainly live up to all of the hype brought on by other review and by C-Net's Editors Choice Award. Not too long ago my set of Skullcandy Aviator's decided to crap out on me. Skullcandy offered a 100% replacement warranty, however they could not replace the headphones as the model had been discontinued. Now I had also owned a pair of Beats Executives, which are a fine set of headphones that are well built with okay sound, however they just weren't good enough to be listened to all the time. So I searched the internet for a new set of headphones and discovered the V-Moda Crossfade M-100s on C-Net's Editors Choice. After reading their review on the superior sound, build quality, and features, I decided to pony up the price to buy a set. So far the headphones are living up to all of the hype from the article. The sound is superior to any set I have heard before, it hits well on everything from lows to highs. The bass produced in casual to hard hitting raps songs are superior to anything I've ever heard before. More important to note is the build quality of the set as I would wager to say that there are probably no other set of headphones that comes even close to as finely built as these do. They look like something that will last forever as it all looks extremely put together, it doesn't get better than this!

Pros: Build Quality, Bass, Mids, Highs, Exceptional Warranty Program, Carrying Case is a work of art, ambidextrous, METAL body!

Cons: None, although if they were free that would make them perfect in every way!!!

Product Research

Overview: The V-Moda Crossfade M-100 over-ear headphones feature an immersive 3D soundstage, and a rugged metal construction, built to withstand the rigors of everyday life. The headphones include two interchangeable cables, and fold for storage in the tough hard-shell carry case.

Over-ear Design: The M-100s have a circumaural (over-the-ear) design that's designed to isolate outside noise, and minimize sound leakage. The supple Bliss Memory Foam cushions naturally form to your ears, providing ergonomic comfort, and creating a seal to shut out external distractions.

50mm Drivers: The Crossfade M-100 headphones have V-Moda's M-Class "Modern Audiophile" sound signature, with large 50mm Dual-Diaphragm drivers with inner and outer rings that separate the bass from bleeding into the mids and highs. Made with master-crafted materials, the drivers deliver deep, precise bass, lifelike vocals, and crystal clear highs. V-Moda uses more expensive driver components than other headphones in this price range, and quality tests them at 6 different frequencies for more consistency.

Metal Construction: The headphones are built and tested beyond military-level quality standards (MIL-STD-810G). Unlike the plastic headphones from their competitors, the Crossfade M-100s have a steel frame with interchangeable, aircraft-grade metal shields. The Steelflex headband is virtually indestructible; each band is bend-tested flat over 10 times. The headphones will stand up in high or low temperatures, humidity, salt spray, and UV exposure.

Note: Custom metal shields are available from V-Moda in several colors, and with pre-made or custom designs.

Dual Cables: The Crossfade M-100s come with two straight audio cables: the 54" SpeakEasy cable for use with your smartphone or tablet, and the 79" SharePlay cable with an extra port to share with a friend. Both cables have 45-degree 3.5mm plugs, and are made withstand over 1 million bends. The SpeakEasy cable has a microphone and an in-line 1-button remote that can control music playback and phone calls on most smartphones and tablets. The longer SharePlay cable contains a 5" pigtail with a female 3.5mm jack to allow another person to share your music. The M-100s include a 1/4" adapter for listening to home audio components with a full-size headphone jack.

Note: For SpeakEasy cable functionality, see the V-Moda Compatibility Matrix.

Dual Input Ports: The headphones have a 3.5mm port on both the left and right earcups. This gives you the choice where to connect the cable. You can daisy-chain headphones to share your music with your friends, or mix two sources at the same time. The headphones come with two V-Corks that can be used to seal and protect the unused input.

Exoskeleton Case: The included hard-shell Exoskeleton Case protects your headphones when they're not in use. The Cliqfold Hinge on the headphones precisely folds the earcups for storage in the case. V-Straps in the top and bottom of the Exoskeleton Case can store your cables and adapters. The case includes a carabiner clip for securing your headphones to your backpack.

Optional Accessories: The following items are genuine V-Moda accessories for the Crossfade M-100s:

  • BoomPro Microphone: a flexible, professional-grade boom microphone with an in-line mute and volume control.
  • XL Memory Cushions: larger, memory foam cushions for extended listening comfort.
  • CoilPro Cable: lockable coiled cable stretches from 47" to 12' in length; includes threaded 1/4" adapter. (available from V-Moda)

Warranty: The Crossfade M-100 over-ear headphones have a full 2-year warranty. If your headphones are accidentally destroyed, the V-Moda Immortal Life Program offers 50% off a replacement for a lifetime.

It should be fine. I bought a Yamaha integrated amp to use it with - I just purchased a home and I'm still getting settled. the headphone plugs that come with it (there are two) work with both large and small jacks - and the sound is incredible with my MacBook. Hope this helps! [ DAVID  Aug 13, 2018 ]
