About the NETGEAR Powerline 1200

Use your power lines to extend your network

With an early 20th century home that has unforgiving plaster walls, Wi-Fi® coverage is challenge for me. With my router on one end of the house, and my home theater on the other, streaming movies is difficult because the wireless signal won't give me the speed or reliability I need. Sure, I could drill holes in the floors or walls and run an Ethernet cable across the house. But shouldn't a fast, reliable Internet connection be easier? Well, now it is thanks to the Netgear Powerline 1200. This two-piece kit uses the AC power lines in your wall to extend your router's hard-wired Ethernet connection from one room to another. The kit includes everything you need to enjoy fast Internet without opening the toolbox.

Setup is fast and easy

Simply plug one module into a power outlet near your router and connect it to an Ethernet port with the included cable. Then, plug in the other module in a room where you want high-speed Internet access and connect your device to it. Just like that, you have extended your network without any tricky in-wall wire installation.

Extend your wireless network too

You can also use the Powerline 1200 to create a wireless access point when used with a Wi-Fi range extender. Simply feed the '1200's output into the extender and you'll have a robust wireless network in that part of the house. You'll enjoy fast, reliable Internet with all of your wireless devices.

Features

Powerline Kit: NETGEAR's Powerline 1200 Kit (PL1200) gives you an alternative to Ethernet-only or wireless networks by extending your signal using the electrical wiring. Simply plug 2 or more compatible Powerline 1200 devices into electrical outlets to create or extend your wired home network through your existing electrical wiring. It's simple to set up, secure and fast. This Powerline kit can achieve speeds up to 1200 Mbps.

Applications: You want a wired network, but you don't want to run long lengths of Ethernet cable? The NETGEAR Powerline 1200 Kit is one of the easiest ways to create an integrated network using your existing electrical wiring. The NETGEAR Powerline 1200 extends your Internet access to any power outlet. With speeds up to 1200Mbps, it's perfect for connecting Smart TVs, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, and desktop PCs.

1200 Mbps Speeds: Speeds up to 1200 Mbps enable applications such as ultra-HD video streams, multimedia streaming, and multiplayer lag-free gaming.

Wide Coverage: Multiple data streams (MIMO) with Beamforming technology offer improved coverage throughout the home.

Gigabit Ethernet Port: There is one 10/100/1000 Ethernet port with auto-sensing technology. This Gigabit Ethernet port is used to connect a wired device like a smart TV or game console to your home's WiFi network.

Simple Installation: The NETGEAR Powerline 1200 Kit sets up in minutes. Just plug into any electrical outlet, then plug into your new network connection. The encrypted Powerline network connects with the touch of a button. You'll have a fast, secure, and reliable network connection in any room. LEDs indicate connection and status of the Powerline network kit. There is no need to configure or install software.

NETGEAR Genie App: Monitor and stay secure with the NETGEAR Genie App on your Apple iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows PC, or Mac computer. The NETGEAR Genie App lets you see your NETGEAR Powerline devices on a network map, get connection status, data link rates and easily setup security encryption between Powerline adapters.

Auto Power Down: The Powerline 1200 automatically powers down when not in use to save energy.

Power Requirements: The Powrline 1200 must be plugged directly into an AC wall outlet; it cannot be hooked up through a surge protector or line conditioner.

Q
Anyone using Centurylink DSL? I have tried other extendors with no success.

We don't have the records to know if any of our customers have used our WiFi extenders with your provider. I do know that there are other ways to create a strong WiFi field in and around your home. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your setup and what you have tried to get a personal recommendation on a solution that can work

The best way to view this product is like a wireless Ethernet cable. This would be used to bridge a gap between either a computer or router and the modem. This device is not a WiFi extender

Q
Can I use this to run a stereo signal by using the Ethernet cable wires individually out to the avr and speakers?
[ Chris  May 10, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
Yes. I ran a ethernet cable to the back of avr. It works well, better then wireless, no signal loss.
[ T  May 10, 2020 ]
A
Probably not. Answer would be yes if signal was from source to amp, ie NAS to amplifier. But amplifier to speakers the wires in cat 5/6 cable aren't substantial enough even without conversion to power and back. You will need 2 or 4 conductor speaker wire to achieve this.

Q
We have a shop about 200 feet from the house, so it has its own service entrance, but all the power comes from the same meter. Will this send a signal to the shop?
[ WINIFRED M  Jun 03, 2017 ]

A
I believe so as long as it's on the same line. However, the ping (latency) might be pretty bad since it's so far away.
[ Tanner  Sep 06, 2017 ]
A
I am sorry I can't. I principle,I should think, it should work, but my worry would be how much interference you will have.
[ VINCENT  Jun 03, 2017 ]
Q
From the description, there are two modules included with the purchase. I assume that I would use one at my router/switch and the other at the remote location. If I want another remote location, can I purchase one additional module or are they only sold in pairs?
[ Craig  Oct 06, 2015 ]

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: These units are only sold in pairs. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
