About the NETGEAR Powerline 500

Extend your home network using your power lines

My home was built in 1920 and has thick plaster walls that make Wi-Fi® coverage a real challenge. Streaming Netflix in my living room with my Roku is nearly impossible because the wireless signal is weak and drops out. Sure, I could drill holes in the floors or walls and run Ethernet cables across the house. But shouldn't a fast, reliable network be easier? Well, now it is thanks to the Netgear Powerline 500. This two-piece kit uses the AC power lines in your wall to extend your router's hard-wired Ethernet connection from one room to another. The kit includes everything you need to enjoy fast Internet without opening the toolbox.

How it works

Simply plug one module into a power outlet near your router and connect it to an Ethernet port with the included cable. Then, plug in the other module in a room where you want high-speed Internet access and connect your device to it. Just like that, you have extended your network without any tricky in-wall wire installation.

Extend your wireless network too

You can also use the Powerline 500 to create a wireless access point when used with a Wi-Fi range extender. Simply feed the '500's output into the extender and you'll have a robust wireless network in that part of the house. You'll enjoy fast, reliable Internet with all of your wireless devices.

Powerline Kit: NETGEAR's Powerline 500 Kit (XAVB5201) gives you an alternative to Ethernet-only or wireless networks by extending your signal using the electrical wiring. Simply plug 2 or more compatible Powerline 500 devices into electrical outlets to create or extend your wired home network through your existing electrical wiring. It's simple to set up, secure and fast. This  Powerline kit can achieve speeds up to 500 Mbps.

Applications: You want a wired network, but you don't want to run long lengths of Ethernet cable? The NETGEAR Powerline 500 Kit is one of the easiest ways to create an integrated network using your existing electrical wiring. The NETGEAR Powerline 500 extends your Internet access to any power outlet. With speeds up to 500Mbps, it's perfect for connecting Smart TVs, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, and desktop PCs.

500 Mbps Speeds: Speeds up to 500 Mbps enable applications such as HDTV, multiple HD/3D video streams, multimedia streaming, and multiplayer gaming.

I am not a techie, but I can tell you this device solved a problem that plagued us for months...livestream signal drops because the router was in one room and the tv in another. This is an adobe home in the mtns, making wifi that much more dicey. We tried all 11 channels, we tried changing the codes on our Bravia, we tried increasing the transmission speed from our providers. We plugged the two units into their respective receptacles and never again had a problem
