Naim Mu-so wireless music system

Six custom-designed speakers, each with its own amplifier, deliver exceptional sound.

Wireless audio for music lovers

Britain's Naim Audio is renowned for their award-winning audiophile components. Their devotion to accuracy and musicality comes through loud and clear in the Mu-so wireless music system. Whether you choose high-resolution audio files, such as those available through HDtracks, the built-in Spotify® Connect, or TIDAL's lossless streaming service, you're in for a rich listening experience. Mu-so is an impressive stand-alone performer, and can also be part of a Naim multi-room audio system.

Innovative design + quality construction = exceptional sound

The Mu-so's six custom-designed speakers deliver full, detailed sound from just about any source. The system features two silk dome tweeters for clear highs, two speakers for the mid range, and two bass drivers reinforced by a radiator for startlingly clean, robust lows. Each speaker is powered by its own 75-watt amplifier, ensuring minimal cross-interference and full, finely detailed sound. And with 450 watts total system power, that sound can easily fill even large rooms without distortion.

That's the brawn. The Mu-so's brain is a 32-bit digital signal processor that controls the flow of music information to each speaker. Two EQ settings tailor the sound for placing the Mu-so Qb either close to or well away from walls or corners.

Built-in Bluetooth with aptX®

Stream music wirelessly from your smartphone or tablet to the Mu-so via Bluetooth. The system includes aptX audio coding, an advanced type of Bluetooth wireless streaming that retains virtually all the detail of the audio signal it carries.

iOS and Apple AirPlay options

The Mu-so is also AirPlay-compatible for convenient wireless playback from your iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or computer running iTunes®. And with the Naim app on your Apple portable, you can use Rovi to discover new music and artists based on those you already like.

Multi-room audio with the Naim app

The Mu-So comes with its own remote for convenient control. And with the Naim free control app downloaded to your smartphone or tablet, you have even more options. The app lets you control up to five Mu-so and Mu-so Qb components to create a multi-room audio system. Remotely control your Mu-so components through your home Wi-Fi network. Group your connected speakers so that the same song plays throughout the house, or only on certain speakers. Or even have every speaker accessing a different source and playing a different song. You can also build playlists with the app, and browse thousands of internet radio stations.

Different by design

The Mu-so's wooden cabinet, designed for optimum acoustic performance, is wrapped in anodized aluminum to provide extra dampening for distortion-free sound. The cabinet rests on an acrylic base that dampens vibrations. An extruded aluminum heat sink in the rear keeps the system running cool. The Mu-so's top-mounted illuminated volume control wheel has on, off, play, pause, and skip buttons built in. A patent-pending embedded antenna provides seamless Wi-Fi connectivity and seamless looks — there's no external antenna sticking up in the air.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Honestly, this is replacing a $150 Bose soundlink mini. It's doing a little more. I love the alarm clock feature. I'm finding more uses for it the Bose couldn't do. The internet connection, air play capability to wake up the speaker instead of walking to it has me using it more. It's loud enough to hear in other rooms, and with all the amps, I'm not afraid to crank it. I was hoping sq would be the selling point. It sounds better than the competition, but was hoping for more highs and eq capabilities.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm definitely not an audiophile. I've always had quality components but not "audiophile" components. i still rock an '80's NAD receiver with '00 Klipsch speakers in my other living room. I strictly listen to 2.1. So temper this review with that information. I bought the Mu-so after my wife heard the original Devialet Phantom at Harrod's a few years ago. She was blown away, as was I. All in one bluetooth started to look like an option. I did the research and decided to do a head to head with the Mu-so and the new Phantom Reactor which i thought was a better comparison price wise. I bought both. I have to say, from day one I preferred the Mu-so. It just had more depth and presence. It actually sounded like a "stereo" and it sounded REALLY good. The Reactor sounded absolutely astounding in it's clarity but it sounded "clinical" to me. I can't really explain that beyond the fact that it was too clean for my ears (if you want pure clean sound, that might be worth a look). My brother in law who is an audiophile came over for a blind listening and was resolute that the Naim sounded better on all music except on low quality recordings where the Reactor sounded better to him. Apparently, the Mu-so sort of punishes low quality recording. Overall, I love it. Sounds amazing and looks amazing. p.s. my 10 yr old son LOVES to turn the volume up and down using the dial on the unit (says a ton since he is a kid a can do it on his phone but prefers to use the a

Pros: Sound Looks That volume knob

Expensive paperweight

Carlos from Deltona, FL on 8/22/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the product. Actually read the instructions before installation. Downloaded the app, plugged the unit in, and it came online. Then, the app prompted for an update however, the unit simply got hung and displayed a solid red light and did not respond to the app or any other inputs. Tried calling Naim customer service via phone however, they are in the UK and are seemingly perpetually closed. Tried emailing but got no response. I'd love to review the sound qualities but I never got the chance to listen to it. Perhaps it lives up to the hype, but the app is clunky, glitchy, and deprived me of any faith in this product's long term performance. At this price point, it is simply unacceptable. I'll be returning the muso for a refund.

Pros: They clearly spent a lot in the outer design.

Cons: Everything else.

Holm from Ft. Collins, CO on 7/5/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound for a one unit system. It's more than enough for my one bedroom apartment, no need for multiple units or speakers. And a very stylish piece as well with the dimmable light. It took me some time to discover all functions of the App though, the setup might be not self explaining if one does not read the guide. The remote requires precise aiming and could have a better range, so using your smartphone is the typical way. But now I can enjoy listening to my tunes or my favorite radio stations from Germany. One has access to a huge list of worlwide stations throug the app which I did'nt expect. The wake up function is also pretty nice. However, I was not able to configure it as a Bluetooth speaker for my computer.

Pros: Sound Radio station list accessible through app

Bill from Marana, AZ on 12/16/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am no audiophile, but I love the sound that comes out of this unit. In the past, I could rarely listen to music for more than an hour or two. With the Mu-so I enjoy listening all day. I particularly enjoy instrumentals and the clean separation that comes out of the Mu-so. I feel the money spent was well worth the enjoyment I am receiving.

Pros: Pleasing to the ears

AWESOME - BEYOND description

Roger from Johnson City, NY on 8/14/2017

I wish I was a Poet or an Audio Technician - THEY would have the right words! I DON'T! The sound that comes out of this unit, well at 63 years old, I can tell you, I think I'm hearing music, the way it was meant to be, FOR THE FIRST TIME. There is a "presence" that comes from Mu-so, that is just like being there. The crispness is unbelievable. I can hear each instrument for "itself!" The bass can punch holes through furniture but is NEVER out-of-place or overwhelming. And I have NEVER had a sound system, that when you turned the volume low, STILL gave you that perfect balance. Vocals? Well, the singer might as well just be standing in front of you! LOOKS? OMG, hovering over a lucite base that glows! Also, the Mu-so App, is excellent, controlling all features AND enabling you to easily locate and make a "favorite" any category of music from around the globe. NO ONE I know of would EVER be unhappy with this unit. I understand this is the same company that creates the sound environment in Bentleys. My next goal is to HAVE this sound system IN a Bentley. Seriously, you will LOVE your own Mu-so!!! Get over the price and REWARD yourself with decades of pleasure...

Blown Away by the Sound Quality

Mark from New Hamsphire on 6/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Mu-so was extremely easy to setup on my wireless network and I had it up and running within 2 minutes. It is being used to stream music from Android and iPhone phones and it's also connected to my 4k TV via the Optical connection. As far as the quality of sound is concerned, I am TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!!!!! I wasn't expecting the transparency, definition and imaging that this one box solution provides. I've been an audiophile since my teens and I'm 60 now and consider myself to have very sensitive ears to quality music. I read many reviews online before I pulled the trigger and have to say that this is one of the best audio investments I've ever made. Hats off to Naim for making such a high quality audio system.

Pros: Sound quality, usability, flexibility and appearance

Cons: NONE

Guest from East Meadow, NY on 6/12/2017

This unit replaced a sonos; 2 PLAY 1'S / A SUB AND A CONNECT. The sonos never worked for more than a few songs or minutes. Anyway, the naim is nice. Looks amazing, heavy unit, a little odd to figure out, but so much worth it with the sound and reliability. Worth every penny.

Naim Mu-so

Guest from Kalamazoo, MI on 5/30/2017

Well, disappointed. Took it out of box, beautifully made on outside, turned it on, and no Bluetooth. Hard reset, no go, multiple devices searching for Mu-so, no go. Should not be DOA for what it cost. Will try one more, if that one has a problem, any problem, back to drawing board.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Custom-Engineered Sound: Six 75 watt digital amplifiers, one for each of the six custom-designed drivers, deliver a total of 450 watts of power and a carefully designed porting system moves large volumes of air with low turbulence for serious bass from a small cabinet. The Naim MU-so houses two 1" silk-dome tweeters, two 2.5" custom midrange drivers, and two 5.25" x 3.0" oval woofers.

  • Silk Dome Tweeters: Silk dome tweeters were chosen through listening tests to replace the traditional metal cones found in many wireless speakers for better smoother high frequencies and better overall sound quality.
  • Custom Midrange Drivers: Custom midrange drivers provide crystal clear speech and powerful vocals. Positioning them at the outermost edge of the cabinet aided in even sound dispersion.
  • Dual Woofers + Bass Port: Two large custom bass drivers are supported by a sophisticated porting system with an outlet at the end of the speaker cabinet. It was carefully designed to move large volumes of air with low turbulence for richly textured, low distortion bass.

32-Bit DSP: At the heart of MU-so is a 32-bit digital signal processor; the same high-spec component used in the original Mu-so system. Fine-tuned in Naim's listening room, it controls the flow of music information to each speaker. It also includes two EQ settings, tailoring the best sound quality whether the unit is close to or away from the edge of any room. The end result is a refined audio experience with no distortion, increased speaker accuracy and an expansive sound.

  • Room Position: Room position enables adjustment of the MU-so's tonal balance to compensate for the proximity of walls and other large surfaces. If speaker system is placed on a shelf, for example, tonal adjustment can be useful in reducing the bass boost that naturally results from such a location.
  • Loudness: Loudness applies a bass boost that decreases as volume is increased. By compensating for the ear's reduced bass sensitivity at low volume levels, loudness compensation can make low volume listening more satisfying

Non-Resonant Cabinet w/ Heat Sink: The wooden speaker cabinet is wrapped in a layer of anodized aluminum to provide a natural, distortion-free sound. On the back of the speaker enclosure is an extruded aluminum heat sink, used to maximize thermal performance.

Wired or Wireless Network Connectivity: The Naim MU-so is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet  jack (10/100Mbps) and features built-in WiFi (2.4GHz, 802.11 b/g) for a wired or wireless connection to your home's network. Either connection allows you to connect to your home's network router and internet provider for access to select Online Music Services, UPnP music servers, and AirPlay.

Note: The MU-so supports up to 24-bit/192kHz high-resolution audio over a wired Ethernet network connection, but only up to 16-bit/48kHz over a wireless WiFi network connection.

Naim App for Apple iOS & Android: The Naim Audio app, available for Apple iOS 7.1+ and Android 4.0+ devices, provides simple yet comprehensive control over both your music and the network-connected Naim MU-so wireless speaker and other network-enabled Naim wireless speakers (sold separately). The Naim App provides comprehensive access to MU-so setup parameters, plus volume adjustment, play/pause/skip tracks, scroll through album art, create playlists, and store favorite radio stations to be easily accessed later. More features & controls include -

  • Input selection
  • Volume, EQ, & Loudness settings
  • Full album & cover art support
  • Build & edit playlists
  • Browser your UPnP music library with album art support and playback control
  • Browse, search, and select Internet Radio stations; plus save & select presets (up to 40)
  • USB/iPod browsing and playback control
  • Multiroom support including "Party Mode" and group volume control (Apple iOS only).
  • Alarm Clock programming

  • Only one Naim App from one mobile device can be connected to a single MU-so speaker at any time.
  • If a streaming source such as AirPlay or Spotify is selected automatically on the MU-so by the presence of a stream, the Naim App display will switch to the appropriate streaming source page and offer the controls available to that stream type.

UPnP (Universal Plug-n-Play): The MU-so is UPnP compatible, which enables you to play your digital music library stored on UPnP servers (such as the Naim UnitiServe, network servers with integrated UPnP software, or on Windows and OS X computers) through the MU-so speaker system. You can stream a variety of compressed, lossless, and high-res music files. UPnP file browsing can be carried out using the Naim App. Once playback has been initiated by a play command on the Naim App, the Mu-so touch panel, play/ pause, next and previous controls can also be used to control playback. Supported music file formats include -

  • WAV, FLAC, AIFF: up to 24-bit/192kHz
  • ALAC (Apple Lossless): up to 24-bit/96kHz
  • MP3, AAC: up to 48kHz, 320kbps (16-bit)
  • OGG, WMA: up to 48kHz (16-bit)
  • All music file formats are only supported up to 48kHz maximum over a wireless WiFi network connection.
  • Windows Media Player version 11 or above incorporates built in UPnP support. A variety of third party UPnP applications are available that are compatible with both Windows and OS X operating systems.

Online Music Services: The Naim MU-so offers support for select online music services - like Spotify Connect, Tidal, and vTuner (Internet Radio).

  • Spotify Connect: MU-so offers Spotify Connect support, so you can stream millions of songs from your portable device with ease. You will need to subscribe to Spotify Premium and have the Spotify App on your Apple iOS or Android smartphone, so you can stream Spotify to the MU-so system. Spotify is a digital music service that gives you on-demand access to one of the largest music libraries in the world (over 15 million tracks and counting). Spotify makes it easier than ever to discover, manage, and share music with your friends. You can browse music by artist, album, track, or most popular; and create your own music library with customized playlists. Spotify Connect can be selected from the Naim App, but will also select and play automatically when the MU-so receives a Spotify Connect stream initiated from the Spotify app on your Apple iOS/Android device or Windows/Mac computer.
  • Tidal: The Tidal lossless streaming service is integrated into the system for an immersive, high-quality sound experience. Tidal is a global streaming service that offers over 30 million songs in high-fidelity CD sound quality. Tidal has two pricing tiers; either $9.99 or $19.99 a month. Both pricing levels allow you to access Tidal's entire music library. The $19.99 tier has the added benefit of high-fidelity sound at CD-level quality. To play a Tidal stream, select the Tidal input on the Naim App, sign-in to your Tidal account and select music to play.
  • Internet Radio (vTuner): You have the ability to access thousands of internet radio stations through vTuner and save your favorite presets (up to 40) for easy access. The first 5 presets can be accessed through the MU-so's touch-panel control, while the other 35 presets are access through the Naim app on your compatible mobile device. Supported Internet Radio formatted content includes MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis and MMS.

Bluetooth Music Streaming w/ aptX: The Naim MU-so features built-in Bluetooth with support for wireless music streaming (A2DP) from a Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows Phone/PC, Mac computer/laptop, and more. You'll be able to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth source device to the MU-so. You can pair up to eight Bluetooth devices, but only one can be connected at a time. Basic playback control (Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) can be done from the MU-so's touch-panel control. You will still use your Bluetooth device for advanced music browsing and to view song/artist info.

  • SBC & AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MU-so offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the speaker system offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • aptX Compatible: The MU-so even supports aptX for lossless, "CD-quality" wireless music streaming from aptX-compatible smartphone and tablets, like Android OS 4.0+.
  • Bluetooth cannot be selected from the MU-so touch-panel, remote, or the Naim App, but is selected automatically when the speaker receives a Bluetooth audio stream.
  • Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Naim MU-so.
  • The Naim MU-so does not support Bluetooth hands-free phone communication.

USB-A Port: In addition to iPod/iPhone/iPad connectivity, the unit's USB-A port can be used to connect a USB mass storage class (MSC) device, such as a USB thumbdrive. The MU-so supports playback of a variety of compressed, lossless, and high-res music files stored on a USB msc device. Supported music file formats include -

  • WAV, FLAC, AIFF: up to 24-bit/192kHz
  • ALAC (Apple Lossless): up to 24-bit/96kHz
  • MP3, AAC: up to 48kHz, 320kbps (16-bit)
  • OGG, WMA: up to 48kHz (16-bit)
Note: The USB-A port does not support connection of Android smartphone/tablet devices or computers/laptops.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The MU-so is fitted with a 3.5mm Aux input for connection of almost any audio device with a analog output or headphone jack. The MU-so also features an optical (toslink) digital input for connection to a Blu-ray player, CD player, or TV. The digital input will support up to 2Ch/96kHz audio.

Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad: The Naim MU-so offers wireless (via AirPlay) and wired (via USB) connectivity for your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

  • AirPlay: AirPlay lets you stream your favorite songs directly from your Apple iOS (4.3.3+) device or from your iTunes (10.2.2+) library on your Windows PC or Mac computer to the Naim MU-so speaker system, over your home's wireless network connection. From your Windows or Mac you can stream your stored iTunes music library on your computer to the Naim speaker system; you can even download Apple's free Remote App onto your compatible iOS device to browse and control playback functions of the music stored in your iTunes music library on your computer that is being streamed to the speaker system.
  • USB Direct: The MU-so supports digital music playback from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad using its USB-A port. Simply plug your Lightning or 30-pin Apple device into the speaker system's USB-A port, using the cable that came with your iPod/iPhone/iPad. Stored music and music apps from your connected Apple device can be played through the MU-so speaker system, bypassing the iPod/iPhone D/A converter for better sound quality. Basic playback controls, like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track, can be done from the MU-so's touch-panel.
  • AirPlay cannot be selected from the MU-so touch-panel, remote, or the Naim App, but is selected automatically when the speaker receives a wireless audio signal via AirPlay.
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

I would explore the Nativ line of products. They are pricey but occasionally have a $500 off sale making it a nice deal. [ BRUCE  Apr 02, 2018 ]
Only with the app . The remote works in the room your in only and you have to buy it separately [ alexander  Apr 10, 2017 ]
Dear Gregory, I do not know if there is a remote for the Mu-so. I have a Qb; it did not come with a remote.I don't see the need for one since you operate them from an I-pad or an I-phone. I I do worry about placement. The Qb should not be placed too high and must be at least a foot from walls on both sides.I keep mine on a table that is desk height, The sound is great. Personally i find it livelier than the Mu-so. Good luck. [ VINCENT  Apr 10, 2017 ]
Yes, you can use all functions out of reach. The remote is for playback and aesthetics: power, inputs, volume, back/next, play/pause, preset radio stations, and lighting. The app lets you do all of that and configure the device: initial setup, radio presets, loudness, alarm clock, room position EQ, volume limit, auto standby time, etc. The remote can allow for finer volume changes than on the phone. Not sure if the QB includes a remote. [ Lawrence  Apr 10, 2017 ]
