Andrew Jones' winning streak continues

Whenever ELAC visits Crutchfield for training, we not only get to hear some terrific speakers, we also learn a lot about the science and art of speaker building from ELAC's world-renowned designer, Andrew Jones.

On a recent visit, ELAC introduced the Carina series, which borrows tweeter technology found in some of the company's most expensive models. Although designed for small to medium-sized rooms, a pair of compact Carina BS243.4s filled our large training room with spacious, lifelike sound.

From the Stereophile review

"Elac's new Carina BS243.4 loudspeaker sounded more refined than any similarly priced loudspeaker I know of. Mainly, though, the stand-mounted Elac's greatest virtue is its supersmooth octave-to-octave balance. Throughout my review process, the word elegant kept forcing itself on me. Bravo, Andrew and Elac!”

— Herb Reichert, Stereophile, January 2020

ELAC's JET-powered tweeter

Instead of the concentric tweeter/midrange combo found in many other ELAC speakers, the Carina BS243.4 features ELAC's famous JET folded ribbon tweeter. The tweeter element is extremely thin and lightweight, and suspended in a magnetic field, so it's able to accelerate with incredible speed, to reproduce the subtlest music details.

A cutting-edge aluminum woofer that can keep up

To match the capabilities of the JET tweeter and create a seamless transition from woofer to tweeter, ELAC chose a 5-1/4" aluminum cone design. Its "compound curvature" shape helps control cone breakup and moves it beyond the woofer's operating frequency range. A large-diameter voice coil precisely controls the woofer's stop-start motion, and contributes to this speaker's exceptionally dynamic sound.

The BS243.4 has a bass-reflex enclosure with a port that fires downward from the bottom of the cabinet. This should minimize any port "chuffing" noise, allowing the speakers to be placed close to the wall behind them. Positioning the speakers about 12" out from the back wall seems to work well in many rooms.

At the training session we heard a pair of stand-mounted BS243.4s driven by ELAC's Alchemy Series DDP-2 preamp/DAC/streamer and DPA-2 power amp. The Carinas produced a big, rock-solid soundstage, and amazing definition and extension from the bass guitar on Aaron Neville's rendition of the Bill Withers soul classic, "Ain't No Sunshine."

Product Research

JET Folded Air-Motion-Transformer: The Carina Series bookshelf loudspeaker (Carina BS243.4) employs Elac's JET folded air-motion-transformer tweeter design for transparent and effortless high-frequency imaging. This JET folded ribbon tweeter delivers high-definition sound with a wider frequency and lots of headroom due to its lightning-fast response, wide dynamic range, and minimal distortion.

Compound Curvature Aluminum Woofer: The Elac Carina Series bookshelf loudspeaker (Carina BS243.4) houses a single 5.25" compound curvature aluminum cone woofer for smooth midbass and rich bass frequencies. To match the capabilities of the JET tweeter and guarantee a seamless transition from the woofer to the JET tweeter, the compound curvature aluminum cone has been developed to control the cone breakup and move it well beyond the operating range of the woofer. A large diameter voice coil and over-sized vented pole piece magnet combine to give remarkable bass dynamics and a rich powerful performance.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Elac Carina Series bookshelf loudspeaker (BS243.4) utilizes a bass reflex enclosure (ported) to enhance low-end bass response. For a more flexible speaker placement and to minimize ventilation noise, the bass reflex port on the Carina series is directed to the floor, exiting the bottom of the speaker cabinet in a down-firing configuration.

Note: The Elac Carina Series loudspeaker enclosure does not include a grille.

Dual Binding Posts: The Elac Carina Series bookshelf loudspeaker (Carina BS243.4) is outfitted with two sets of heavy-duty binding posts allowing to bi-amp or bi-wire the bookshelf loudspeaker. These binding posts ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Mounting Options: The Carina Series bookshelf loudspeaker (Carina BS243.4) can simply be placed on a flat surface; like a table-top, stand, or shelf. The base of the speaker features an integrated rubber pad to help isolate the speaker from the mounting surface and protect your mounting surface from scratches.

Note: The bookshelf speaker does not offer any bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall mount the loudspeaker.

Applications: The Elac Carina Series bookshelf loudspeaker (Carina BS243.4) can be used in a 2ch stereo application, or used as your front speakers and/or rear surround speakers in a multichannel home theater application.

  • 2Ch Stereo or Front Speaker Placement:  For optimum stereo imaging, place the speakers so that an equilateral triangle is created between the speakers your main listening position. You can also angle ("toe-in") the speakers towards the listening position to gain a more focused central image. In addition, the speaker's tweeter should be positioned at ear level in your main seated listening position.
  • Rear Surround Placement: In a 5.1-channel surround setup, avoid placing the speakers forward of your listening position. The speakers should be spread apart wider than the front speakers. In addition, try to elevate the speakers to the same height or slightly higher as the front speakers for the most enveloping soundfield.
Note: In either application, the speaker should be placed 1' to 2' away from boundaries such as wall and corners. Close proximity to a side or rear wall will enhance bass performance, but being too close may result in bass that is unnatural.

Carina Series: The Elac Carina Series consists of a floorstanding loudspeaker, bookshelf loudspeaker, and center-channel loudspeaker (all sold separately). The Carina Series by Elac delivers effortless, transparent sound with a wide frequency range and wide dynamic range for a true high-resolution audio experience.

Optional Powered Subwoofer: Add an Elac powered subwoofer (sold separately) to the Carina series to bring more bass to your movie and music soundtracks.

Customer Q&A

4 questions already asked

Do the Carinas get fatiguing at all after listening to music after a couple of hours?
[ Rob  Oct 20, 2021 ]
1 answer
The JET tweeter is supposed to help prevent fatigue, but it truly all depends on the ear that is listening to them. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your past experiences with speakers to check our thoughts on what may happen when you listen to them
[ Paul  Oct 23, 2021 ]  Staff
Do these need to be placed on stands or can they literally be placed on a bookshelf? I'm thinking of using these left and right of TV and getting the matching center channel for above the TV. Would you recommend this? Also, would you recommend a separate subwoofer for the AVR setup, I have a modest Tru Audio subwoofer now. I don't have room to place matching Carina rears for full 5.1, unless I use two very small Tru Audio satellites I already have.

I have mine set up on a very heavy/stable dresser full of clothes (nothing rattles) that's 36" high. They sound awesome!! They are also resting on a rubber yoga mat template to prevent even more vibration. I wouldn't put them on an actual bookshelf as I think they need a sturdy, vibration free, no resonance platform. These are in my bedroom and the stands wouldn't work for me. Having said that the stands would be my second choice. They are excellent for music and more than plenty for movies. I would use the subwoofer and rear satellites you already have. The Carinas are very strong musically and you only need slight fill for movies to get a light surround sound. They have strong mid bass but I would use the sub you have just to boost the lowers sound (below 80hz maybe?). You can always upgrade as needed but I think you already have a solid set up.
[ WILLIAM  Apr 04, 2021 ]
As long as they are ear level, I dont think I it matters if they are on stands or shelves. However, all speakers sound best when there is sufficient distance between them and the wall behind them. I only use mine for 2 channel stereo and added dual stereo subs to my pair and the sound is amazing. In a surround sound system, a sub is a must.
[ WILLIAM  Apr 04, 2021 ]
If you are using these in a surround sound system, with subwoofer support I think this would be an alright setup. The speakers have a base that gives built-in relief for the downward-firing bass ports. You will find that low-end support is necessary, as well as an eq or tone controls to adjust the envelope. On my Cambridge CXA81, I found I really have to drive these hard before the mid and low-end capabilities of the speakers begin to shine. I added a Schiit Loki and it completely changed my opinion of these speakers for the better. Your mileage will vary dependent on the sound signature of your AVR. Your existing subwoofer should work just fine. Congrats on considering these!
[ EDWIN R  Apr 04, 2021 ]
I believe that bookshelf speakers sound better on stands. For me, the Carinas were no different. Shelves don't always place speakers at their proper height. Also, your shelves could produce unwanted vibrations that could effect the sound. If you decide to place them on the shelves, you may wish to consider isolation mats under them if possible. Also, with respect to placement, I found that mine sounded best (following a break-in period) about 1 and a half feet away from the wall. Are you able to situate your speakers that far from the wall on your shelves? Too close, the bottom end comes off as too enhanced in my estimation. I don't use my speakers for home entertainment nor did I feel the need for a subwoofer once I found their sweet spot. Mine are used for dedicated two-channel listening so I wouldn't be of too much help with your other questions.
[ Deb  Apr 04, 2021 ]
Stands may be better for rigidity, but these would be fine on a bookshelf as well. Center channel would go below the tv most likely, you want it at about eye level. I have my Carinas paired with two JL Audio e-subs and it sounds amazing. They sound great on their own but particularly if you are getting the bookshelf version, I'd recommend a sub as well. Good luck it'll sound great

Are ELAC Carina BS243.4 built in Germany too as the ELAC VELA BS 403?
[ Sudhrity  Feb 17, 2020 ]
1 answer
Label on the back of mine says "Assembled in China"
[ Forrest  Mar 11, 2020 ]
I need speakers that I can lay horizontally on a bookshelf, due to space limitations. Would these be ok placed like that?
[ Gary  Jan 07, 2023 ]
1 answer
These should not be laid horizontally. Doing so would likely cause issues with the sound dispersion from the drivers and airflow from the port. Our advisors would be happy to help with selecting speakers. Please reach out to them via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.
