Rydeen BSS1LPB blind-spot detection system

Installs where you put your rear license plate without drilling or cutting

The license-plate bar looks similar to a license plate-mounted rear-view camera, and it can be installed along the top or bottom of your vehicle's rear license plate or tag. Everything else installs inside your vehicle, and requires no drilling or cutting — simply find a suitable spot for the control box and GPS antenna. Once installed, the blind-spot detector works automatically once your speed goes over 20 mph (this speed threshold is manually adjustable).

Works in nearly any type of vehicle

Rydeen's BSS1LPB blind-spot detection system includes several pieces that connect to keep you informed. The main exterior component is the waterproof license plate bar, which houses the microwave radar transmitters for detecting objects in your blind spots. A GPS antenna improves accuracy and tracks your vehicle's speed to ensure you won't get alerts unless you're going over the pre-set limit. A pair of LED indicators — one for each A-pillar — provide lighting cues when vehicles or pedestrians are in your blind spot as you change lanes. A "buzzer" speaker unit accompanies the visual alerts with audio warnings. And the hideaway control box ties the whole system together via the included harnesses, which also tap into your vehicle's turn signals and taillights.

Detects cross-traffic vehicles when you're in reverse, too

If you don't have a stereo with a touchscreen for displaying rear-view camera images, the BSS1LPB can still help you get out of tight spots. Its cross-traffic detector engages when you put your vehicle into reverse, so you'll be aware of vehicles approaching from either side in parking lots and garages, even if you can't see around nearby cars or pillars. It won't alert you to objects directly behind your car on the ground, but you'll be able to ease out of your spot without fear of getting t-boned.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The BSS1LPB is a license plate mounted blind spot detection system designed to add an extra set of "eyes" to warn the driver if there are any vehicles in either blind spot before or during a lane change, providing up to 50 feet of coverage area next to and behind the vehicle.

Components: A Sensor Bar, containing two microwave radar sensors angled towards each rear corner blindspot of the vehicle, installs on the top or bottom of the rear license plate using the existing mounting holes. An LED indicator gets mounted on each "A" pillar along with a dash mounted buzzer to provide visual and audible warnings. A GPS signal, from the provided antenna, automatically activates the system once the vehicle is moving faster than 20 mph. When the sensors detect an approaching vehicle in the blindspot, the LED for that side will light up. If the turn signal is activated and a vehicle is detected in the blindspot of that side, the LED will flash and the buzzer will sound.

Cross Traffic Detection Alert: The BSS1LPB also features a Cross Traffic Detection Alert. When the vehicle is switched into reverse, the Sensor Bar's radar coverage gets extended farther to the left and right, alerting the driver of approaching vehicles when backing out of tight parking spaces.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I like the idea of one sensor mounted centered on the back of the car vs. 2 sensors at vulnerable points on the corner of each bumper. Seems like much less chance of being damaged. [ Mustafa  Feb 12, 2019 ]

Q
I have a white nissan altima. The license plate bar can be painted?
[ Enrique  Apr 01, 2019 ]

A
I don't think it will work if you paint it.

Q
It quotes that no drilling is required. How would you supply power to the radar bar (which is outside the vehicle)?
[ Dulux  Dec 03, 2018 ]

A
Correct, You do have to get the wire inside. I was able to route the wire in by just filing a notch in the license plate light assembly. Most are plastic and just clip out and in. The will be a rubber grommet seal on the inside for the wire to follow as well. No drilling!
[ Kevin  Dec 09, 2018 ]
A
Lots of drilling and fitting may be required to mount the radar bar and feed the various electrical wires but no drilling of bumper cut-outs is necessary because the radar bar mounts on the exterior of the bumper. This is not an easy installation!

Q
Can this be installed on the front of a car to warn you of crossing traffic when you are about to pull out into a street but have limited visibility due to bushes or parked cars?
[ Everett  Oct 24, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
This wouldn't work as it requires a minimum speed setting of at least 15 MPH to cause it to trigger on. A front view camera system with a camera that can see 180 degrees could be a safe alternative to help you check for on-coming vehicles. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on a system to help you see around those bushes and other blockers. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
where do the led's mount? Can I mount them on my side mirrors and route the wire thru the mirror mount? Vehicle is 2016 gmc sierra 1500
[ Bob  Sep 30, 2018 ]

An LED indicator gets mounted on each "A" pillar along with a dash mounted buzzer to provide visual and audible warnings. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the system's main webpage. You can also download a PDF copy of the product owner's manual by clicking the link for it under the "What's in the Box" heading. Q
I am considering both this product and BOYO VTC424R reverse camera for my wife's 2015 Mini Cooper Countryman. Would there be any compatibility or other issues in installing both of these products on this vehicle?
[ Craig  Sep 30, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
There is a wire that comes off the rear camera that connects to the backup light wire. Based on the picture provided, it looks like the license plate and the liftgate are on separate parts of the car. I am assuming that liftgate also holds the brake and backup lights. So, the wire from the license plate will not connect to the backup light wire on the liftgate. So, it will not work. The license plate and the backup light assembly need to be on the same part of the car. If you do get this and make it work, do not cut the backup wire to splice the camera wire to the backup wire. This will make the car think the backup light is out because cutting and splicing changes the ohms resistance, giving the reading to the car that the light is out. Instead, buy couplers that connect to the backup wire without cutting it.

Has anyone noticed the sequence of led flashes at startup. When powering up I get both leds flash and a one beep. After a few seconds I get a second flash usually both leds (sometime one or the other) no beep. Anyone have something similar? Unit is working fine, just wondering if it is gps lock or something.
[ Kevin  Sep 25, 2018 ]

A
I have three kits installed and all three do the startup test of both LEDs and a single beep. I don't set a second flash. Is your car in reverse at the time of the second flash? You might call Ruben at Rydeen and ask if the tech guy can figure it out.
[ PHILIP  Sep 25, 2018 ]

I also get flashes at startup and sometimes while just driving down the road.
