A room-filling "sweet spot," thanks to Uni-Q® technology

KEF's patented Uni-Q technology places each speaker's tweeter in the acoustic center of the bass/midrange cone. This lets the LS50s create a detailed and accurate three-dimensional sound image. This makes the "sweet spot" (the ideal listening position) much larger. Sit wherever you like — you'll have fantastic sound throughout your room.

KEF LS50 bookshelf speakers

KEF LS50 bookshelf speakers leverage 50 years of expert design and craftsmanship to create a phenomenal listening experience.

My experience with the LS50s

One of the best parts of working at Crutchfield is listening to the variety of speakers that come through our doors. It's fair to say that we geek out about it. So I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to test the award-winning LS50 bookshelf speakers.

I listened to a dozen high-resolution tracks that revealed crystal-clear detail and pinpoint imaging. "Billie Jean" from Michael Jackson's Thriller album had that instantly recognizable 80s glossy production texture and feel.

When we landed on the ballad "Blue in Green" from Miles Davis' seminal Kind of Blue album, coworker JR Stoffel remarked on the detail you could hear in Jimmy Cobb's delicate brushwork.

Are these speakers right for you?

The LS50s can deliver truly incredible sound — in the right setup. That means you'll need high-current amplification; 100 or more watts of power from a quality power amp or integrated amplifier.

Proper speaker placement is also crucial to getting the best performance out of the LS50s. Placing them on a pair of custom-designed LS50 speaker stands helps eliminate unwanted vibrations and reflections. Read my article on stereo speaker placement for positioning and set-up tips.

If you'd like personalized advice on matching these speakers with an amp, give one of our advisors a shout for a free expert recommendation.

Add a sub for better bass

If you love hard-hitting thump with your music, consider adding a powered sub to complement the LS50s. This doesn't mean you need to blast your room with bass, but it does give you that extra bit of low-frequency impact that helps re-create the live show experience. My powered subwoofer buying guide has tips on choosing the right one for your room and taste in bass.

These are the best pair of speakers I have ever owned, for a number of reasons. They are incredibly transparent, tonally accurate, detailed, and cohesive throughout the audio band. The highs are airy, detailed, extended, and fast. The mids blend so well with the highs and are rich, without coloration, and lifelike. The bass is clean, tight, and extended for the cabinet size. To top it all off, these top-of-the-line speakers are very beautifully made and finished. A++

Probably best value for the money

Crutchfield customer from Portland, ME on 8/16/2019

Probably the finest value for a high fidelity speaker. Crutchfield Product High Lights are spot-on--- I have paired with JL Audio E110 sub and together this is a winning combination. These speakers are Reference accurate. They are not especially efficient, so combine with a high quality, high power amp. Currently I'm running these with a vintage Krell KTA 100 and they can use the power. Clarity of the sound is not taxing, even at high volumes. The LS50s to my ears have a transparent sound stage. For the money, you cannot go wrong. Especially good for spaces that towers would take up too much space.

Pros: Reference quality in small package

Cons: 85dB efficiency needs plenty of clean-pure power Best paired with high quality sub with plenty of power

Crutchfield and the LS50 are awesome

David from San Jose, CA on 8/9/2019

I'm very pleased with the LS50 because it sounds and looks great, but I'm even happier with Crutchfield. I had always thought about getting the LS50, but never decided to pull the trigger until recently. I targeted the Titanium Gray colored version. I thought the LS50 looked the best in this color. Much to my disappointment, I found out this was a limited edition color that is now discontinued. Luckily, I was able to find a "scratch and dent" pair in this color in the Crutchfield outlet at a discounted price. I was a bit hesitant at first to buy scratch and dent. A big appeal of these speakers is their looks. I didn't want to buy a scuffed up looking pair of LS50s, but I decided to take a chance. When they arrived, I was shocked in what great condition they were in. It took me over 20 minutes of looking over them closely to find a barely noticeable nick on the BOTTOM of one of the speakers. Crutchfield is obviously very conservative to call these a "Scratch and Dent" pair. Most retailers would just call it "New" or "Open Box". With a good subwoofer, these speakers sound fantastic and punch way above their size and price point. I couldn't be happier with Crutchfield having these in stock and sending me a "Scratch and Dent" pair in such pristine condition.

Pros: -Great Looking -Compact -Excellent details, especially vocals

Cons: -Lack bass, but won't matter if you have a quality sub (which I do)

You can't go wrong buying KEF speakers.

Crutchfield customer from Austin, TX on 7/31/2019

I have owned a pair of KEF 104.2 speakers since 1987. They reside in my living room performing dual duty as hi-fi stereo and home theater speakers. They are truly outstanding speakers. I bought the KEF LS50 for my "studio/guitar/computer" room. I haven't had them long enough to break them in yet, but I did go ahead and do a comparison between the LS50s and the 104.2s, and these are my observations. (Note, the 104.2s have had the woofers serviced and I replaced the ferro-fluid in the tweeters, so they are still in top form). First off, the LS50s cannot compete with the 104.2s in the overall size and sound of the presentation. It is pretty obvious though, that these speakers are both products of the same company and have similar voicing. The LS50 do have a sightly more pronounced upper range treble that gives percussion, and plucked instruments that little bit more impact or edge. By the same token, the LS50s can have a slight edginess on certain voices, whereas those same voices sound smooth on the 104.2s. It is probably due to the LS50's metal dome tweeters as opposed to the silk domes in the 104.2s. LS50s have a 5 inch woofer and do put out a lot bass for their size. But, up against the 104.2s you realize the LS50s are missing half the show so to speak. I have added a subwoofer to the LS50s in my studio room setup and it sounds great. I am sure that once the LS50s are broken in they will sound even that much better.

Pros: Excellent overall bookshelf/monitor speaker.

Cons: Adds slight edginess to some vocals. They really need the addition of a subwoofer if you want to hear all the music.

I have around 10 hours of listening time into these speakers and even though not broken in yet, I am astounded at how good they sound. Open, transparent, detailed come to mind. Really nice, full, bass for a bookshelf sized speaker. I bought the titanium grey and the free matching stands were a great bonus. They perfectly match the speakers. I'm impressed with Crutchfield, quick 2-day shipping, great service. I never leave reviews, but this is an exception.

Honestly if they cost 5K they'd be on more high-end audiophiles list of "must have" speakers. For this price? I have to laugh. These speakers blow the doors off of 5K monitors with ease. I'm not going to describe my audio systems caliber to argue-but it's around 75K. These speakers easily handle 200 watts clean power - sound stage like much higher priced speakers -truly amazing. WOW -buy these and be amazed !

Believe the Reviews

I am in the process of downsizing, so after reading the many glowing reviews on the KEF LS 50s decided to take the plunge. Taste runs about 60% Jazz, 25% Pop, with the remaining 15% classical. The match of the KEFs and my Rogue Sphinx integrated amp is very good. There seems to be no strain on the Rogue to drive the KEFs to sane listening levels. Bass is well extended, and given the small size of the speakers, quite remarkable in relatively large room. Eventually I will try integrating with a sub, but right now, not missing anything. Midrange is full and rich; treble is airy and extended. With the right set-up, soundstage and imaging are excellent. The speakers are about 10 ft apart, 12 feet from my sweet spot listening chair, 2 feet from the front wall, pointing straight ahead on heavy metal stands. This setup in my room gives a very wide soundstage, yet quite good pinpoint center and front to back imaging. I was concerned about missing the open, airy sound of my previous speakers (Magnepan MMGs). Not so! The KEFs actually throw an equally impressive presentation without all the placement fussiness of the Magnepans. The other benefit of the KEFs is the bass. Believe it or not, the little 5 inch woofer presents a deeper foundation than the Maggies. Highly recommended if you want a taste of the high end.

Pros: Fairly easy placement, no boxiness, awesome bass for their size, ability to present seamless music top to bottom.

Cons: Not cons, but a couple of facts...the KEFs will not make bad recordings sound good; they will sound bad. But good recordings will shine. Also, plan on about at least 50 hours of break-in until the sound opens up and the speakers begin to show their real potential.

Planning to downsize from a house to a condo and have started downsizing goods accordingly. The big audio system and subs eat a lot of realestate. After some research am positive reviews, I decided to give the KEF's a try. I have to say: impressive, impressive, impressive! I replaced a 7k pair of bulky floor standers and a pair of huge subwoofers with these and have absolutely no regrets.. admittedly, these are behind a 20k + front end bit do it very proud... enough said...

Pros: Sound,Size, finish,Price

Cons: No grills

Very Detail and Clean! In a medium size room and very happy with the Bass, might try a subwoofer later. Really brings out the music and I'm all across the board in taste. I replaced towers and glad I did, can't believe how great these sound and the individual sounds you can pick out. Using them with Bluesound Node 2i (Tidal Master MQA)/Onyko C-7030 CD player to Schiit Saga preamp to Schiit Vidar power amp (100 watts 8 ohms) with Morrow Audio SP5 speaker cable, Morrow Audio MA5 interconnect, AudioQuest Mackenzie interconnect.

Pros: Build Quality! Finish!

Ernesto from Westminster, MD on 2/13/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Love the clarity of these speakers! My Bose sounded muddy and muffled, even with Hi-res Flac files. Now I know what people mean about hearing/feeling the soundstage, there is almost a 3D sound. I also invested in an SVS SB-3000 sub to go along with this since I have a fairly large room and watch movies. May not be necessary if you have a smaller space, as these do have a decent amount of bass for music. Plus, the black editions are gorgeous...

Pros: clear, clean sound. Great soundstage. Killer stealth look.

Cons: may need a subwoofer if you want/need tremendous bass, have a larger listening area, or watching movies with things blowing up

KEF LS50s

These KEF bookshelf speakers are superb. They are quite compact but don't sound that way, as other reviewers have noted. In addition to an acute rendering of music detail, they produce a resonating bass from such a small box (Peter Gabriel's 'Mercy Street' used to test base resonance). Best of all, they genuinely do escalate the sweet spot of the music; whether this comes from placing the tweeter in the center of the woofer, I don't know. But it's real (confirmed by my intensely analytical 29 year old son). And, as others have also noted, they are gorgeous.

Great speakers with the ability to disappear

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have been using the KEF LS50 for almost a month. It sounded good right out of the box but I feel the bass is more pronounced after letting them run for a while. It's currently powered by a Yamaha TSR-7850 and no subwoofer in a room size of 19x14x9. I will be adding an amplifier eventually and test for improvement in quality. In a medium size room, i don't feel the bass that LS50 produces. Bass is crisp but very subtle. Highly recommend dual subwoofers to go along with it (mostly SVS PB-2000's). I love the speakers for it's clarity and crisp sounding vocals. These are being used for 40% music and 60% movies. For the price, quality is unbeatable and it almost does the job a floor standing speakers. There was lot of hype behind the product and I feel it still exceeds the expectations.

Pros: Clarity smaller size but high performance

Cons: Need a subwoofer or two based on room size

Excellent Small Speakers

They're great small speakers that perform per their cost. Mine run with a small HSU subwoofer giving them depth that would otherwise be missing. They're great for jazz. Not as effective with hard driving rock or highly compressed recordings, but they're small speakers, not towers. If space is limited, you can't go wrong with the LS50's. I look forward to adding a high quality mini integrated amp and seeing the difference that makes.

Pros: Great sound in a small package.

Cons: Pass on them if you're a head banging rock enthusiast.

KEF LS50 vs. AR3a

Crutchfield customer from Greensboro, NC on 1/12/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought the KEF LS 50's to replace my beloved AR 3a's which I've owned for 40+ years. Both speakers are excellent, but different. The KEFs have incredibly clear sweet mid-range and treble and sound very precise. They have decent base but are not as expansive and warm as the AR 3a's (the AR's have 12 inch woofers with powerful magnets). After listening to both speakers for several weeks I prefer the KEFs. The AR's sound mildly "flabby" when compared to the KEFs pure and precise sound. I'm very pleased with the KEFs. I may possibly add a sub-woofer at some point in time but don't plan to do so right away.

Pros: Superb overall sound. Pure, clean, precise. My wife loves their smallish size.

Cons: None really

I had these speakers before, upgraded to a higher priced speaker. Loved their sound before, but thought I could get a more expensive speaker for that nirvana sound we all crave for. Now, after many speakers, I have upgraded back to them again! I know what they are capable of paired with the proper source. They are not broken in yet, however I already hear that musical sound that I desire, knowing they will get better after a few weeks. Some reviewers say they lack a proper bass. That is definitely not true. Again, with the proper source, they have the bass, and it all comes together for that magical sound . I've already had a relative visit and immediately noticed the sound coming from these speakers. If you have been skeptical of buying these speakers, Don't! Buy them. And, getting them from Crutchfield is just an added bonus, knowing the team is with you, like forever. I won't say that I hear sounds I didn't hear before, as I've had some great speakers. I just hear them better now.

Pros: Magical sound!

Excellent speakers, they are everything I have heard about them and more, a bargain at any price. I am replacing a pair of $3500 speakers with these and they are as dynamic and have a better focus and soundstage.

Pros: excellent focus, great soundstage (both width and depth) the timber is correct.

Cons: none worth mentioning, they do take quite a while to burn in and sound their best. I am using them with a sub woofer for al little added bass.

Failed to Impress

These really aren't the sonic marvels I was led to believe they would be. Granted, I'm streaming Tidal through a Naim amp, so the signal may not be the best. But there is no mistaking that the LS50s are limited bookshelf speakers. When playing jazz or something like In the Waiting Line by Zero 7, they sound ok, but try to play any kind of rock and the tinny mids and weak bass really sound like a transistor radio. If the Uni-Q technology of LS50s is the same as their high end Blade speakers, then I would definitely spend 30 grand on something else. Doubt I'll be using Crutchfield again either. Having to ship back everything in EXACTLY the same packaging it came in is a total PAIN. For example, the speaker stands came in a flat box that I needed to tear apart. If I had gone to the store down the street, returns would be a snap.

Pros: Sounds ok with certain types of music - ie. jazz and techno.

Cons: Sounds like a transistor radio with any kind of rock, as mids are tinny and bass is weak.

First they are well packaged for safe shipping. Out of the box the piano white finish is stunning. I'm pushing them with vintage McIntosh solid state pre and power amps which create a warmer sound than might otherwise be produced. Comparing them to my polks I realized the polks sounded like they had blankets draped over them by comparison. The KEF's were Chrystal clear and accurate. When I turned them inward slightly to face me while listening to a piano concerto and the speakers disappeared. Violin and piano cello and guitar weren't on a speaker they were in my room. Amazing sound particularly for the price and size.

Pros: Sound price appearance

Cons: Low end. You need a sub if you like classical organ music

Replaced a set of Bose 901's with these. Using the same amp and preamp I used with the Bose I was blown away with the detail and separation these speakers have. If you want to actually hear what the artist intended for you to hear then I highly recommend these speakers for the price and also recommend using either pure direct on the preamp or 0 on the bass , treble , and mids for true sound.

Pros: Detail sound, Accuracy , Hi end sound for decent price , Beautiful to not only hear but look at.

Cons: Depending on room size I highly recommend a powered sub to bring more lows to the music.

These speakers are pretty spectacular. All of the positive things that are said about these speakers and their coincident/coaxial drivers is all true. They are well worth the regular price. off sale price and Imaging is excellent, sound stage is very good, treble is excellent, mid-range is excellent, and bass is accurate but it doesn't go very low. If you add a sub-woofer, this should be a dream system. For music reproduction, I can live with the bass situation for quite some time. If you are going to use in home theater - I would want to buy or use an existing sub from the start. If you are considering a bookshelf you really can't go wrong with these speakers. Oh yes, they really look good too. (I got the white due to the additional scratch/dent discount and have no regrets . . . at all!)

Pros: Startlingly good (accurate) sound reproduction Beautiful appearance (my view point)

Cons: Bass is not as low as a floor stander speaker (Only Con I could think of...)

After reading and watching many glowing reviews of the LS50, I decided to buy a pair. I'm using them for both music and TV listening. Bottom line is they live up to their reputation. They have a very good soundstage and definition. While having good lows and mids, these really shine in the higher frequencies. Some reviewers have said these can be a little bright. But not in my experience. I have these connected to a Denon AVR X3400h (100watts per channel). I am also using a small 8" sub-woofer with them. After all these are bookshelf speakers and they do benefit with having a sub-woofer to help with the extreme lows.

Pros: Highly detailed sound imaging Excellent mid & highs Excellent soundstage

Cons: A sub helps to really fill out the sound.

Amazing detailed and big sound from such a small speaker. I moved up from the Elac B6. The extra money is definitely worth it. Reveals exactly what you are getting from your sound source. I am going through my old vinyl and am surprisingly stunned by how well they sound through these speakers.

Pros: Outstanding imaging and detail.

Cons: I use a subwoofer to boost the lowest end.

Still breaking the speakers in, close to 100 hours now, but there is no small monitor out there that can match the LS50's. Excellent staging, great pace, and surprising bass extension. To me, these monitors outperform most floor standers costing twice as much. Much more focused, less compromised sound. Be sure you pair them with an amp that has plenty of clean power, they'll soak up all they can get.

Pros: Excellent sound stage Fit and finish Good bass extension for size

Cons: Bass could have more impact, but this could be solved by adding subs

I have an old amp from the 90s an Arcam Alpha 7, and these speakers were able to work with this old amp! We love listening to music with these new speakers! The first record I put on was Sonny Rollins way out west with some studio chatter and it was so present, my cat freaked out an ran thinking someone was in the house!

Pros: Works with my old system and old 40 watt amp from the 90s. Such a present sound. Even at low volumes so much more detail is there.

Cons: The only con is I'm inspired to upgrade more components of my system.

Wondered if they would be as good as the reviews suggest, well they are! These are an upgrade from some ELAC Debut 6s that I really liked. I am by no means a "sound connoisseur" but in my small (and crowded) office they have an "open" and clear sound. I am running them with an ELAC EA101EQ-G integrated amp and using a SCHIIT Modi Multibit DAC as well as an SVS sub. I wondered if the ELAC amp had enough power but it seems ok (that will probably be the next upgrade). The ELAC app with room EQ and sub modeling works well with the LS50s and is really helpful with my office's poor listening layout (almost nothing is placed as it should be and other things interfering - such as a large couch almost on top of one of the LS50s).

Pros: Great sound

Cons: None so far.

I haven't used these speakers in the way most people will. I have a fairly large system in my listening room but I also like to cook and wanted some nice, smaller speakers in my kitchen to listen to the same music in both places so I bought these. They are powered by a nice, separate 100 wpc tube integrated amplifier. They sound absolutely terrific. They exceeded my expectations in every way. Having a separate volume control is mandatory for this application in my opinion. I have them mounted on some wall mounts so the speakers are about 7 feet off the floor and about 8 feet apart. Aside from the wonderful sound, the finish on them is just beautiful. I have listened to many different small speakers and these are up there with the very best. The 8-inch width makes it possible to mount them in small, tight spaces. I think that the price is very reasonable (can I say cheap?) for such high-quality speakers.

Pros: Great bass, midrange. Small, versatile size. Absolutely stunning piano finish on ALL surfaces. I have paid more for small speakers that don't sound this good.

Cons: Not really a "con" but these speakers are much heavier than they look.

One of the best bookshelf speakers I've tried

Thomas from Norman, OK on 12/28/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I picked these up on sale for $1,000, and for that price, they are fantastic. I've seen a lot of reviews stating how they blow away speakers many times the price, including tower speakers. To my ears, that's a bit of an exaggeration. While they compete with most similarly sized bookshelf speakers of any price, they lack the dynamics of decent (at least $3000 a pair) floor standers. And I certainly wouldn't use them for a home theater as they lack a lot of low end boom (you'll need bigger speakers for that). These are definitely music oriented speakers that do particularly well with jazz, electronic, classical, and classic rock. They do not do so well with rap or pop music due to their tighter bass. Compared to my Klipsch RF7-IIs, which I use for my home theater, the Kefs lack some of crispness in the highs that the massive Klipschs have. And it goes without saying that the Kef's lack the low end punch that the RF7-II's two ten inch woofers provide. I know this is an unfair comparison, but for those who are going for the absolute best performance for all types of music, the Kef's may not be the best choice if money or space aren't an issue. Compared to other bookshelf speakers, the only ones that I've heard that sound better cost close to $10,000. So if you want a small speaker with great sound, these are about as good as it gets without breaking the bank.

Pros: Soundstage, mids, clarity, tight bass, beautiful finish.

Cons: Low end lacks the presence required for some genres, the highs may be a bit too laid back for some.

These are GREAT speakers. Powered by NAD 388, playing a mix of jazz, classical, etc. The soundstage is wide, and the speakers reproduce what was recorded with amazing accuracy and clarity. Great detail, and the bass is fine. ( Like any speaker they need accurate placement for their best performance) They're not super high end audiophile, but for the price they are right up in the top tier of even more expensive speakers. I could listen to them all day. With the right amp and placement the low end is excellent.

Pros: Very accurate Excellent soundstage

Cons: Needs a high quality amp for best performance.

Terrific detail for such a compact speaker, but still hoping for bass to open up more. Disappointingly experiencing some distortion on higher volumes with mid range. Was not expecting this since the reviews talk about clarity. Running a vintage Marantz 4140 amp to drive these, and wondering about compatibility...hate to buy another amp to pair with these, so we will see as these are still in the burn in phase and am trying to give them a chance to shine. Can see why a sub would be necessary for these.

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing to the eye

Cons: Seems easy to overdrive these at higher volumes

I paired the KEF up with the new Outlaw Reciever... wow! Wonderful! The speakers need some run time to sound their best. Simply run music thru them for a week or so. The bass will develope nicely as they losses up. I start them off at a low volume and ease them into life... KEF has done a fantastic job building these guy. Great finish rock solid and a sweet happy midrange! I love the sound! They are small in size but very big in sound and sound stage. They do need a good amount of power so don't think of trying to run them with some single ended triode, it ain't gonna work. The Outlaw has plenty of power to do them justice. Buy these guys! Enjoy!

Pros: All good

Cons: Not much.

This is probably the best standmount speaker on the market-at least for under $5000. The B&W 805 is comparable in quality (though a bit different sonically and maybe just a touch higher-end in the upper registers), but its price is silly next to what KEF asks for the LS50, which easily beat my DALI Ikon 1 MK2 standmount and 7 MK2 floorstanding model, along with the higher-line Mentor 6 floorstander). Be sure to give them room behind and on the sides, and let them break in for a couple days' worth of less-than-optimum playback. The LS50 will the. open up and sweeten to its correct registers across the spectrum, presenting a holographic stage. Finally, give this speaker good power. I use both NAD M27 and PrimaLuna DiaLogue HP amplifiers. The latter is superior, but both are "Class A" amps (per Stereophile's ratings). Great speakers need at least above-average power. Ignore Wattage ratings. Good power is clean and consistent across the bandwidth. Read reputable reviews. Avoid low-end receivers, no matter how tempting. Crutchfield has an excellent selection, and, as always, their reps will help you choose the right one. I've been shopping with Crutchfield since the late 1980s, when I was a graduate student at the University, and, not only was Crutchfield the same "best" electronics store back then as it is now, its people were the same knowledgeable and helpful professionals they are today. Trust that relationship with good people. The right gear will follow.

Pros: Class A sound for Class C price.

Cons: Some say "not enough low end." Not true: use a great amp, and you'll hear the LS50 go places you thought impossible.

The LS50s are great. I've had many speakers in the past 5 years (klipsch, Kef R series, Kef Reference, Tekton double impact), and the LS50s are perfect for desktop application. In the past I had used the LS50s for home theater but found that I couldn't get enough mid-base to remain satisfied, and that their use for "home theater" can't quite reach the dynamic peaks required for intensive scenes requiring higher volume. Kef of course didn't design the speaker for home theater and didn't intend for consumers to use them in that application--explicitly stated use as nearfield monitor, but of course I wanted to get Class A speaker into my home theater so i repurposed them. Right now i have them on my computer desktop with isoacoustic stands and a nuprime ida-8. With that simple setup I could improve the sound with the active ls50s or buy a better integrated amp e.g. deviate, but I wouldn't recommend spending more than ~2k on this setup, or I'd suggest buying the active speakers--which are highly regarded as sounding better than vastly more expensive separates--or buy the kef reference or even some of the tekton speakers. The caveat to spending more than 2k would be in the event you want to pair the ls50s with a tube amp--which I may actually do in the future. Excellent speaker, happy once again.

Pros: -clean, clear, good base on desktop, classy looking speaker

Cons: -isn't a full tower ls50 with more mid-bass and lower bass drivers but magically keeping the soundstage and cost to 1k.

One of the best speakers ever bought, they are extrembly well built and heavy. Every inch oozes quality. I use them as my main front speakers in my setup and they work beautifully. You do need to add a subwoofer to give the resulting sound a deeper bass but I expected that. Did I mention they look gorgeous? No complain so far, pretty happy with the purchase and I highly recommend them in a home theater or stereo setups, they are very versatile.

Pros: Small, resolving

Cons: Light on the bass but not a problem with a subwoofer (expected due to size)

I was very surprised to see these at Crutchfield. The KEF LS50 while not old is becoming somewhat of a audiophile legend. When I found these at an "open-box" sale price, I just couldn't resist. This is my first experience with KEF but do believe all the good hype you've heard about this speaker. I'm using it as part of my desktop computer audio system and is an immense step upward from the Audioengine P4's that it replaces. Not that the P4's are bad in any sense, they are actually incredibly good for a smaller speaker, but the LS 50s are in another league altogether. I listen almost exclusively to classical, jazz, folk and easy rock and the KEFs really get to the heart of a recording like I've never heard before while never becoming edgy or bright. Plus they can be stand-mounted and used as part of a regular 2-channel room system. BTW a subwoofer is probably optional for the LS50s even though I'm using my Audioengine S-8 (turned way-down) to round out the bottom end. I should mention, my system consists of a Marantz HD-AMP1 / Oppo UDP205 / Audioengine S-8 Subwoofer connected to my iMac Retina via Audioquest cabling. While this might not be the cat's meow for everybody, it certainly floats my audio-boat and fills many hours with absolutely wonderful hi-def music. The only problem is that recently KEF released the LS50 Wireless version that is supposed to be even better and I'm getting a bad case of up-grade-itis that may have to be reckoned with.

Pros: Believe the other reviews

Cons: Nothing comes to mind

Phenominally happy with these speakers that replaced ADS L9e speakers I loved for 25 years. I love no longer hearing driver separation. This must be how the master engineer heard recordings in the studio - all I notice now is the music. Using with NAD c356 BEE, that has some punch (decent amp) and these KEFs hang in superbly. I was worried I would not find a reasonably priced replacement for my ADSs - but after researching and listening... am stoked on the LS50s. If you want to pay attention to the recordings and diminish awareness of the equipment these will do...

Pros: Clarity. No driver separation. Excellent dispersion. Huge volume range, with same presentation throughout.

Cons: Flatter response to bass and treble adjustments than traditional 3 way speaker design.

Absolutely great sound comes out of theses little beast with super tight bass and fwrd sound as long as you keep normal leves. They are not to be used if you like listening to high volumes with heavy bass content or distortion guitars. The drivers will over extend and distort quite bad.

Cons: Do not play them at loud level or they will over drive and distort on the mids and especially the lows.

Very good set of bookshelf speakers. Works well on desks but will be great on the stands. Due to its uniQ driver technology, highs and mids are very well integrated and it feels like the sound is coming from one single source. On and off axis dispersion of sound is great. One drawback of smaller speakers is the lows. With KEF LS50, bass is adequate for 5.25inch driver. But if you need more bass, you need to add a subwoofer. Since this speaker doesn't come with a speaker grill to cover the driver, you will have to be careful when you have mischievous kids. Overall a great buy.

Pros: - Well integrated highs and lows - On and off axis dispersion of sound - Smaller in size but not on sound. - Vocals sound great

Cons: - Bass is adequate for its driver size but many will prefer a subwoofer - Doesn't come with the speaker grill - Bass port on the rear so keeping it closer to the walls will result in muddy bass

Features

Uni-Q Driver Array: The LS50 bookshelf loudspeakers feature KEF's patented Uni-Q driver configuration, in which the tweeter is mounted at the acoustic center of the midrange cone. With both acting as a single point source, the sound is dispersed widely and evenly throughout the listening area allowing you to experience superbly defined and perfectly balanced stereo imagery with a wide "sweet spot". The Uni-Q driver array is made up of a 1" aluminum vented-dome tweeter and a 5.25" magnesium/aluminum alloy cone woofer.

  • 1" Aluminum Vented-Dome Tweeter: The geometry of the tweeter dome matches that of the midrange cone to avoid disrupting the waveform. By smoothening high frequency response, this helps to account for the detailed and strikingly natural-sounding treble. The 1" aluminum vented-dome tweeter utilizes a Tangerine Waveguide to encourage the sound to radiate spherically for wider, more even dispersion so that everyone in the room enjoys the same superb sound quality. A large internal vent prevents potentially distorting high pressures from building up behind the dome in the critical vocal region, preserving all the nuance and fine detail of the original performance.
  • 5.25" Magnesium/Aluminum Alloy Woofer: The 5.25" woofer uses a magnesium/aluminum alloy cone that is light, stiff, and smooth for natural midrange and midbass sound. A well as allowing the midrange cone its full extension, KEF's ingenious Z-flex surround guides the sound from the tweeter across the surround without any disturbance or secondary radiation. Treble response is clearer and sweeter.

FEA-Designed Cabinet: The FEA-designed cabinet with its constrained layer damping bracing and precision engineered curved baffle, along with the elliptical flexible port all work in concert to prevent cabinet vibration and resonances that produce unwanted sound coloration for clear, spacious, distortion-free sound.

  • Curved Baffle: The curved baffle is shaped so that the sound waves spread from the drivers with minimum reflection from the edges which gives a very nice spacious sound. The curvature also improves the rigidity of the baffle which reduces vibration and sound coloration.
  • Constrained Layer Damping: The constrained layer damping which is between the brace and the enclosure walls and also the front baffle, prevents the cabinet from vibrating and radiating sound. This helps to prevent coloration in the midrange.
  • Flexible Port Tube: The rear-firing port tube has a flexible wall which allows midrange sound that is travelling down the port tube to escape back into the cabinet and prevents longitudinal resonances; which can otherwise radiate and cause midrange coloration. The port tube also has very carefully flared walls to avoid the chuffing noises that you can hear when you get air turbulence inside the port. Two foam port plugs are included to seal the cabinet if the bass is too "boomy" because of speaker placement.
Note: The LS50 bookshelf loudspeakers do not include grilles.

Binding Post Terminals: On the rear of each speaker cabinet is a pair of heavy-duty binding post terminals to connect your speaker wire (sold separately). The binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single only).

Mounting Options: The KEF LS50 bookshelf loudspeakers can be simply mounted on a stand, shelf, table top, or other flat surface. The KEF GFS-524 LS50 speaker stands (sold separately) are custom-designed specifically for the LS50 bookshelf speakers. The speakers should be mounted 18" to 28" from the floor and spaced 6' to 10' apart. They should be "toed" in slightly to the main listening area. Eight self-adhesive rubber feet (four for each speaker) are included to provide a secure non-slip, protective mounting surface. The feet add approximately 0.1875" to the overall height of the speaker.

Note: There are no keyhole slots or threaded inserts to accommodate wall mounting.
