Hooked these to my denon ceol rcd-n10 and using in my bedroom. I don't play my music super loud so these are a great combination. Considering a subwoofer but not sure I need one, I am primarily streaming music from my IPhone and playing CDs. Very pleased with the speaker appearance and sound. The speakers have a small footprint and are easy to place almost anywhere. Grabbed them on sale at Crutchfield, great deal.

Pros: Small footprint, great looking, good build quality,

Cons: None

Get them while on sale

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Very happy with the purchase! Customer support at Crutchfield beyond reproach; supportive and helpful while awaiting delivery. (USPS lost tracking during delivery.) I ordered the KEF Q150 speakers as a substitute for an out of stock set of speakers for which I had been waiting. The process of cancelling and switching to these speakers (these went on sale) was easy and one couldn't ask for a more supportive customer service. Although I would have preferred the KEF speakers to be a little more sensitive, they had the wide range of response I desired and needed for my 7.1 theater setup. The brisk highs and overall sound quality fit my needs almost perfectly. (I am 82 years old with above average hearing.) Primarily for watching movies, I find that I am using them more for stereo listening of classical and organ music since all of the nuances are readily evident. GREAT!

Pros: Clean cut sound and brisk highs

Cons: Each speaker cover costs extra.

Pound for pound, probably one of the best bookshelf speakers available in this price range. Excellent sound stage with a more than adequate bass reproduction. The overall sound much belies the reduced size of this speaker.

Pros: Great sale price at Crutchfield mark> for an unbelievably competent speaker of this size.

Cons: A little "front heavy " so handle accordingly!

I have a pair of these in my tv room connected to a Cambridge Audio AXR 100 (also purchased from Crutchfield) and the sound is excellent. I am not an audiophile by any means (thank god! : ) but I love listening to music; everything from The Ramones and PJ, to Dylan, Neil and Toots. They have a very full sound from mids and highs to phenomenal bass and they look great. They sound great when I want to turn it up and also when low in the background. Very happy! P.S. I know I need to tidy up the wires and nail down that one piece of shiplap! And the shelf is temporary!

Definition and soundstage

Ryder from Colleyville, TX on 2/7/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought these speakers specifically for music and couldn't be more happy. Some things to mention first though, do not buy this for full price, it goes on sale multiple times a year. Also I've heard other people say that these speakers are forgiving in terms of placement, but I disagree because the back port when far from a wall produces much more bass. Ok, getting that out of the way, these speakers were exactly what I was looking for. The KEF Q150's are simply easy to listen to. The high end is extremely defined but never fatiguing. The instrument separation is like something I have never heard before. Secondly, the soundstage is absolutely incredible, which just adds to the experience. Its also is extremely important (obviously) to EQ these. After EQ, they become very musical and fun with decent bass, although a sub does help. My one complaint is the volume (which is to be expected). These are not very loud speakers (when EQ'ed) and its very easy to know when they are at its limits. If you EQ them to have less bass though, I find you can play them louder because the woofer simply cant play as loud as the tweeter. Overall they really provide an amazing listening experience that never gets old.

Pros: Extremely defined Amazing soundstage You can literally hear micro-details of sounds you have never heard

Cons: Not loud Very directional Position within room matters

These Q150s are my first purchase stepping into hifi and boy am I happy. I inherited and restored a pair of KEF 104/2s a few months ago and with those as my primary listeners I gained a new appreciation for music. The separation, the dynamics soundbars can't recreate with tiny drivers, I got hooked. All that said, those can't come with me to my apartment. I need something I can transport safely, so the 104/2s stay with my parents for now. The Q150s were on sale for $350 and after a listening session I knew they were right for me. They come in excellent packaging I can reuse to move them safely in the future and the sound is perfect for near field listening. It's warm, paired with my NAD D3045, and I don't feel the need to crank the volume to enjoy my music. I did pair these with a Cambridge Soundworks sub I inherited and the sub is definitely a necessary addition for my music preferences (rock, alt rock) and tv (action movies/shows). These will make excellent listening and tv speakers in an apartment until I buy a home and do a combo listening/home theater with the 104/2 fronts and these for surrounds. Finally, the speakers themselves feel nice and sturdy and they fit my aesthetic, I have no intentions of buying the grilles. For the money, I couldn't imagine a much better purchase.

Pros: *Sturdy/heavy enough *Aesthetically pleasing *Warm/rich *Small room filling sound

Cons: *Low sensitivity

Worth the hype

John from Washington, DC on 1/27/2022

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

These speakers are fantastic. They have been much hyped, but very much earn their reputation. Imaging and soundstage are excellent, and they project a big sound for bookshelf speakers. I had to place them pretty close to the wall, and they come with foam plugs that help you tune the bass response, which is a great feature. I don't like that they come without grille covers, because they look a little too "THIS IS AUDIO EQUIPMENT" for my living room, but the magnetic covers are cool. I got mine on sale, and they seem to go on a deep discount several times a year. I can't comment on whether they're worth the money at full price, but for $350/pair it's hard to imagine you could get a better set of speakers.

Pros: soundstage Imaging Bass Size

Cons: Doesn't come with grilles Very deep cabinet

Nice wide field with little detail loss until you are well off axis. Not the last word in detail but enjoyably warm and clear for the price range. These are well suited for our largish (16x24) master bedroom and match our older NAD receiver well. Excellent speakers at the sale price but I would demo others for your preference in the same msrp range before buying.

Pros: Lightly warm mids and highs, good range, price, looks

Cons: None at the price.

Great speakers when on sale

Nick from Pittsburgh on 1/19/2022

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

3 Stars at their retail price (Never pay this much) 4 stars at their lower sale price (they go on sale often) What can I say, these are solid speakers with some sparkle in a small and refined package. If you're a newcomer to home theater or budget hi-fi, they're great. They have a few competitors in the sale price range, but are very competitive. These shine in most genres except for Jazz, Rap, and anything with dynamic volume swings. They sound a little "V shaped" Treble: The metal dome tweeter is crystal clear and sounds wonderful. It's one of my favorites under the $750/pair mark. Vocals and instruments are incredibly detailed to almost an analytical state. They occasionally dance on the edge of being harsh or fatiguing, without actually becoming fatiguing. (Some amps may affect the brightness here more than others) Mids: These are the Q150's biggest weakness, mids just sound thin and like something might be missing. It's not awful, but it's noticeable for me. Bass: These go lower than you might expect. The enclosure is tuned quite low and they have good output, but you may still want a sub. Bass varies from tight and punchy to a little tubby depending on the frequency. The hollowed out plugs balance things out well. Build quality: Not bad but not great. The cabinet feels light and a knuckle rap gives a cheap, hollow sounding return. Laminate looked good and aesthetic.

Pros: Clear, clean treble. Bass is good for a 5"

Cons: 86DB sensitivity is inaccurate, closer to 84 3.7-8ohm can be hard to drive Midrange is lacking Feels a little cheap Bracing isn't great

Having purchased a pair of KEF 103/3 Ref Series in 1990 on the recommendation of KEF from a friend (who had a more "upscale" KEF model) ...and having completely enjoyed and appreciated these speakers over the years... I wanted to improve the sound in another room... I didn't realize I would transform the sound like I did. I had a pair of very nice (and recent) Klipsch bookshelf speakers in that room with a very good sounding Sony receiver about 25 years old. But... being the greedy, somewhat older, music/sound person I am, I saw these KEFs on sale at Crutchfield (who I have trusted for years) and bought them as a Christmas present for me... from my daughter and grandchild. OK, I'm only a few hours into listening to the speakers, but... wow. We have some pretty nice speakers in different rooms around our home... and now I am so pleased we have these - just as I wanted: natural, open, soft, full (including bass)...but only better than I expected... and, from experience, I know they will sound even better over time. Very pleased!

Pros: KEF ...from my personal experience Beautiful Beyond bookshelf

Cons: None I see/hear yet

Upgraded from our older speakers (20+ yrs) after realizing that the sound was rubbish after visiting a friend who had a klipsch setup! Ended up with the KEF Q150's after discussing with Crutchfield rep and price point. Wow. For a small size, the bass is full and round without being "boomy" and the mids and highs were balanced and breathtaking. Our family room is 20x30 with high ceilings but they had no problem filling the space at a good volume. Giddy about how they sounded, we played a variety of music through them, culminating with Coldplay's "Heart" (Cos I cant draw a heart shape on here) and it literally made the hairs on my neck stand up. Fantastic sound detail, great price from Crutchfield, prompt delivery, they look awesome . . .

Good step up from powered speakers

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Starting out by saying that I'm not an audiophile. I just like listening to music and I recently got into vinyl as a hobby. Regardless, I really like these speakers. I upgraded from a set of Kanto Yu powered speakers and immediately, I could tell the difference between those and the Q150s. The soundstage was audibly wider and more open. Records that had distortion around the inner grooves suddenly didn't, and it was the first time I felt like the artist was playing live in my small office. The clarity on these speakers are awesome and it feels like a steal for the money.

Pros: Open soundstage Easy to drive lots of clarity and enough bass for me without a woofer Decent Price when on sale

Cons: I'd wait for a sale, the normal price is a bit steep in my opinion

I had purchased the LS50 Meta to put into main salon on my commercial dinner boat. I was very pleased with them. However, it was in a public space and I was very concerned that they may get damaged. So I sought a less expensive alternative. I tried the Q150. I found that the sound might actually be better for the room. I found the overall sound tended be softer and richer. The bass a bit deeper. Overall a good fit for background music. The LS

New speakers, a rare and welcome treat...

Clark from SANTA CRUZ, CA on 11/9/2021

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I own 10 pairs of speakers. Working class speakers, not high end, sound proof room, Dom Perignon speakers. Aside from my outdoor speakers, I haven't purchased anything new since 1998. I do have a nice (older) set up in the house for TV/Movies and the occasional record, but my listening area is in the garage, where I have 3 stereos of various vintages set up. I've read the reviews on these little KEF's and wanted to get a pair when Crutchfield last had a sale, but missed out. So when the sale popped up again and I was able to score a pair from the scratch and dent pile + they gave another $20 discount for ground shipping, how could I pass it up? The speakers do not disappoint. Much more bass than anticipated, so much so that I'll probably swap out my cheap Craigslist sub in the garage, with my banger from the house. The high are not as bright as I typically like, but I have pretty old and tired ears also, so turned it up, put on YYZ to hear the cymbal bells crystal clear. They are keepers and at the price after all the discounts, a steal. I even built custom stands on day 2, because I knew they will be around, maybe for another 20+ years.

Pros: So much bass from such a little box

Cons: No mounting holes of any kind

Nice looking and well made speakers. As others have pointed out they need a sub for the bass but most people should know that judging by the size of the components. They have a nice sound. Very similar to my B+W speakers in terms do the highs. I haven't tried them on too many different forms of music but what I did play sounded good. I thought they were surprisingly heavy for the size.

Love these speakers! hooked them up to my Cambridge AXA25 integrated amp and music sounded beautiful and natural. Mids are buttery smooth and highs are nice and clear without any sibilance, bass is nice and not at all boomy. you may want to add a sub later but it's not needed right away. I would absolutely buy again and recommend them to a friend

Superb all-around speakers. But some might want more bass.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Perfect for my medium sized room - about 15 by 20 feet. Fidelity and stereo separation are superb with plenty of bass for me - but might be lacking for some. My musical tastes are quite broad from "classic" jazz from the 50s and 60s (think Miles Davis), rock and popular music starting in the 60's and more modern stuff (Radiohead is one of my recent discoveries and their sublime music is rendered exceptionally well. Can't say I like the music which is more currently popular with the younger set, which is where more bass might be needed. I run these through my NAD D3020. I also listen to my old vinyl with the Project Carbon Debut EVO and the Project $99 preamp. These records going back to the 1970s never sounded so good.

Pros: Perfect for most types of music. Does not take lots of watts to drive.

Cons: Might be lacking in bass for some folks.

I caught these on sale for my wife's turntable rig. The cabinet appearance exceeded my expectations. As far as sound goes, I have a sub and installing the port plugs took care of some boominess. The imaging is great. I am giving these 4 stars because there just seems to be some "it factor" missing for me. I have a number of systems in the house and I have been a professional sound engineer for several years earlier in my life. Would I buy them again, absolutely. Would I put them in one of my rigs? The jury is still out. Perhaps with some more time on these I'll click with them a bit more

I hope this doesn't sound too over the top, but these speakers have transformed my life. I own Nordstrand Audio and we make and sell musical instrument products and I also have and have had a recording studio for years now. The question my whole career and life has been built around is "how's it sound?" and these speakers have revealed to me what I haven't been hearing for my whole life until now. I currently have Genelec 8040's at home and 8250A's at the studio. I will be selling both sets shortly and adding a set of LS50 Meta's at my studio and here's why: I can now hear what I've been pretending to hear for most of my life. Everything translates so clearly and solidly it's just astonishing. These speakers really present music like the musicians are right in front of me. But not like a live performance. This is beyond live music. It's like sitting in a top notch control room listening to a freshly finished track in its native environment. Just amazing. I'm currently finishing up moving my studio to a new space and I'm in the acoustic treatment phase. Digging in to what these speakers (and the Meta's) are capable of with room analysis and tuning is one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done because I know once I'm done the results are going to be stellar and as a result the products and the music I make will be that much better now that I can really hear everything. It's almost like cheating. Shhh, don't tell other studio engineers about these

Pros: Stunning spatial resolution and accuracy Incredibly stable stereo imaging Seductive detail and depth

Cons: A little light in warmth and bottom but room careful wall proximity placement helps, or add a sub for a setup that punches WAY above the cost.

Best imaging I have had, I have a near field setup, with a KEF both sides of a desk, usually background music, while I computerize, well first time I turned around to see who made that sound, and it was KEF

Pros: Pinpoint sound, more efficient than expected, very well made

Cons: Takes some time to work in, bass is better after about 30 hrs of listening

Good speaker if you buy them on sale.

Good value if you buy them on sale. These are not worth full price. We bought these because we had a very specific need for the coaxial drivers. Our location required laying them on their side and the coaxial drivers help to minimize off axis phase cancelling. They are well built and not bad looking (just a black box). They sound very good. They sound a little "boxy" at low volumes. Mid and high frequencies are very clear and bright. Bass is very good for such a small speaker. They do not come with grilles. What a rip off if you need them.

Pros: Good bass Coaxial driver minimizes off axis affects

Cons: Boxy sounding at low volumes Do not come with grilles Need to wait for sale price

Awesome Little Dudes

I really did not know what to expect from these little guys. All of my previous speakers were of the large tower variety, including a pair of $6000 Vienna Acoustics. I really wanted to downsize in order to make future moves a little less painful, so I started researching small, inexpensive speakers. I narrowed it down to the Q150's and the Wharfedale Diamond 225. I went with the Q's based on several interesting reviews and the general "coolness factor". I am really happy with my choice and I especially like the crazy off-axis soundstage. Very important to me in my large, less than perfect listening room. I love these things. No problem with bass, although depending on the type of music you listen to you might want to throw a little subwoofer into the mix. I'm very happy with my. choice.

Excellent sound coming from a small form factor. You would expect them to be larger than they are. Shipping was very quick, packaging was excellent. They are replacing a pair of Infinty Beta 50s in interest of space, and I am not losing any sound quality. Very impressive. I will continue to use Crutchfield for my audio purchases.

Excellent speakers for the sale price. I have these powered by a Bluesound Powernode (80WPC), and have no issues getting them the power they need. The Q150s have a smooth top end, are coherent, and have great bass response. I'm actually using the port plugs to curb the bass a bit, as I do have them about 10" from the wall. This setup gives me solid and quick bass that isn't overbearing in an apartment setting. Overall great speakers for the price, and they look great!

Pros: Compact, coherent sound, controllable bass response

These speakers are the best in class, hands down. I bought them when they were on sale, but I would pay full price for them no problem. I ordered about 8 different pairs of speakers to see what sounded the best. I order polks, wharefdale, psb, klipsch, bose, and a few others I cant remember ofd hand. These, by a landslide sound the best. Not even comparable! They sound so clean, crisp and full its unreal. And I am obsessed with good sound. One thing you absolutely need though is a small sub. I pair these with with the Polk psw10 sub and it couldn't be more perfect. Do yourself a favor and order these speakers sns that sub and you will enjoy music like you've never heard!!

Pros: Perfect sound, but you need a sub with them

Cons: They need a sub, but what 6.5" doesnt?

Pros: Paired with a good receiver that puts out about 100 watts to the rear, you won't be disappointed.

Cons: None that I've experienced yet. I wouldn't use these as my main front speakers. Just not enough umpf. ;;;;

These sound incredibly detailed at low volumes (great in an apartment) but really shine as you increase the volume and get really loud despite the 86 db sensitivity, I can't even push them past -18db without getting yelled at by the ol ball and chain. I use a denon x3600h currently in a 3.0 temp setup with a klipsch rp-640d for the center (these Q150s are the L an R). These integrate seemlessly with the klipsch during dolby surround playback with movies and present an incredible soundstage in stereo listening with music playback. The bass is impressively full and really thumps when placed with 12 inches of the wall, you only need a subwoofer for the inaudible sub 20hz frequencies in movies, otherwise these haven't failed to reproduce the bass on multiple types of songs (billie eilish, young jeezy, dubstep, house music, rock n roll, jazz, etc). I was hesitant but really glad I took a chance on these. I have the black Q150s and they look really good, so good my wife thinks they're "fine." (Every other speaker I've had or shown her is "ugly"). These speakers sound great and look great, don't hesitate on these gems. I bought them on sale. they're a ridiculous value at that price, but even at the full price, knowing how they sound, I'd buy them at full price if I had to.

Pros: Detail at low volumes, good bass reproduction without distortion

Cons: Its disappointing the grill is a separate purchase, even though they look good without the grill. These do lean towards a slightly warm signature, makes the sound signature "smooth" in a good way without any harshness in the treble. Although this same smoothness means that some female vocals, and higher pitched male vocals come across as slightly subdued or laid back (think adele or christina aguilera going way up high)

Have been listening to these for a few weeks now. A little 'tight' at first, but now they have opened up and produce a beautiful natural and balanced sound. Very good all around. Transparency and presence, without any forced upper middle range or coloring that I can tell. Great for jazz, with transparency even in the bass. At first I thought I might like to add a sub, but the bass opened up and I'm amazed at the range of these speakers. Excellent for orchestral music ( maybe a little small for large orchestral music though it could be my room and setup) and ridiculously good for smaller orchestra and chamber music. I've listened to a lot of my old record collection (especially vinyl) and heard many things I never heard before. At the price I paid for them, they have no right to be this good.

Had been upgrading my "vintage" system gradually but neglected possibly the most important part - speakers. I had some Polk S4s from the 90s that sounded quite good, I thought. These are better. More accurate, better soundstage and more prominent bass, without being muddy. When I mounted them on stands, which enabled me to separate them by about five feet - which is unfortunately all the room I have in my current setup - they really opened up. They are quieter than the Polks - 86 dbs to 91 dbs - but do much better when driven harder. Easier to listen to. A bargain on sale.

Just a review for those of you that care about this sort of thing. I recently ordered the Q150 in white, and while I much prefer the look of the white in theory. In practice, I find that the finish at the edges to be sub optimal. I have had cheaper speakers that looks better. Maybe I got a sub par batch or something, but it's driving me nuts as I am putting these on my desk. I decide to exchange it for a pair of black ones rather than rolling the dice with another pair of white ones just to be safe, my guess is that seam issues will be less visible with black. All that said, I do love the sound coming out of these things. Kudos to Crutchfield for making the process of exchange painless.

These speakers are a real gem! I give it high marks in the price/performance ratio aspect. I'm using these in a computer setup and it replaced my paradigm atom v2's. I have these paired with a yamaha as-801 integrated amp and a SVS NSD-400 subwoofer. With these, I have to turn-off the sub-woofer because they extend very low for 5 1/4"'s! I have then out from the wall by 12"s so it won't be too tighten up the bass. The midrange is clear and warm and the high's are silky smooth. The soundstage it presents extends pass the speakers, and with my eyes closed, I can easily identify the stage layout from instrumentation lead and backup vocals, etc. These should be on your short list of speakers up to twice its price range.

Pros: Good bass, clear mids and high's

Cons: Nothing at this price point

I've head these beauties for about 16 months now and really learning to appreciate them. I'm listening in the near to mid field, from about four feet to maybe 12, and I can discern the improved coherence from the concentric driver. The old Polks in the near field just didn't sound as "together". Clarity is outstanding, bass wonderfully detailed. Only downside is a slight edge from the metal HF dome if pushed hard, but I rarely do that anymore.

Tiny things do come in small packages. They are really great for what they are. Perfect for near field monitors, although not magnetically shielded. Smaller listening spaces are best. Very good dispersion and soundstage due to point source driver design, like the Tannoys.

Pros: Fairly neutral. Small footprint. Placement not critical. Good build quality. Look awesome in walnut. Sound great for being so small.

Cons: Not much for the price. The lack of grilles has been fairly well covered by others, but I like 'em without. They are not meant to rock the house... you will need a sub for that.

I chose the q150 over the q350 because of the size, but I was really considering the 350s. I'm so glad I got the 150 - I'm trying to understand why someone would need larger speakers (not that I won't upgrade down the road for a more proper surround sound experience)! The base is a little lacking though, but I think that's to be expected with bookshelf speakers. I made the decision to get the 150 and then definitely get a subwoofer vs 350 and no subwoofer with average bass.

I'm throughly enjoying my KEF 150's, which I use in a 2.1 environment with a very musical Velodyne CHT, slot-loaded, 10" front-firing subwoofer and a twenty-five year old Yamaha RX-770 Natural Sound receiver (min.85 rms@8ohm). I've determined that the stereo imaging and sound stage are very dependent upon the quality of the source material and how it was mixed or engineered. In addition, to obtain the tweeter response desired, I have to set the treble control to +3 and turn the Pure Direct selector to the off position. At my listening level of between 9 and 10 o'clock on the volume selector, I haven't been able to detect a difference in sound reproduction with the speakers set 10 feet apart, when using the port plugs, in my 3700 cu. ft., very open listening environment ( 13 ft. ceiling with one wall of windows, top-to-bottom, 2/3 of which is covered with cloth vertical blinds ). At low listening levels , below 9 o'clock setting, mid-range dominates. My prior speakers, Boston Acoustics Sub-sat 6's, were over twenty years old and I had recently discovered that the polyurethane that surrounded the mid-range speaker in the two-speaker satellite units had deteriorated. I'm not an audiophile and did not have access to other speakers of comparable value to use for comparison purposes - not to mentioned the associated expense that would have been necessitated to do so, or access to a retailer that stocked the KEF's, Elac Debut 2.0 b6.2, and Klipsch-RP500M speakers.

Really like the sound. Considered 3 different bookshelf speakers and selected these. Getting into HD music with Neil Young's Archive (NYA) website. The KEF's along with a subwoofer are providing sound quality far better than what I have listen to throughout my life. The speakers look good on stands.

Pros: Cystal clear m in mid-range and highs.

Cons: Little shy of bass response. Added a subwoofer and now sounds great.

These speakers are amazing. I am not an audio engineer. I have them hooked up to a topping E30 DAC and a sansui 3000a for a small room personal listening experience. Very rich and beautiful sounding to me. Highs are scintilating, not hot or brazzy. Great fit for my setup.

Pros: All in one in a small form factor.

A very nice sounding speaker , neutral and well balance. However , I am not happy with my purchase. My speakers have a factory defect - the walnut veneer is poorly applied and is separating. This defect should not have made it past QC.

I have owned KEF's for years and have never been disappointed. I bought 2 pair of these during the sale at 299$ a pair and that's a major bargain. Love the speakers for my bedroom and office, but this is more about Crutchfield's customer service. One pair had some cabinet damage and they are SO EASY to deal with. Replaced a pair in days. That's the way customer service should be. Love you guys.

Pros: NICE BUILD AND GREAT SOUND

After debuting a few decent "mid-range" bookshelf speakers I was extremely lucky to grab the white q150s at $299. Music sounds great but I suggest a sub for home theater use to get to really deep lows and rumbles. Overall I think these sound cohesive and powerful, and are enjoyable for both music and movies.

Another miIestone product from KEF

Crutchfield customer from Wernersville, PA on 12/23/2020

KEF has made another milestone product. Having designed loudspeakers and worked in the audio industry for a number of years (my first exposure to KEF was with the LS3/5a loudspeakers and their driver components sold separately), I feel I could write a long review here on this product as well as its integration with a sub-woofer. I appreciate the neutral character which leads me--without thus far performing measurements--to believe the mid-range response is flat. High frequency response benefits from an excellent tweeter design. Being coaxial with a well-designed crossover makes for a great polar response leading to excellent imaging. Low end response is very good for a small driver and of course benefits greatly from the use of a sub-woofer, improving dynamic range and lowering distortion, when a proper crossover is used. In a small room (or used near-field) lower end response should be acceptable without a sub-woofer. Lower end response is on the 'warm' side of neutral. This is a loudspeaker that performs well with most any musical genre. Musical detail is revealed without the "harshness" of many competing models. As expected, you'll hear differences in electronics. Any cons? A few, (some which I'll likely tackle with minor modifications to better suit my listening environment), but I can't quibble at this price point, even more so when considering all that the Q150 does right. The Q150 is worthy of its acclaim!

Clear, articulate sound. Decent bass for their size, though I believe that they will open up a bit more at around 100 hours. First class fit and finish. I originally purchased them for desktop use, but quickly realized that they were a bit too large for that. Solution? Move the Monitor Audio Ones in the family room (which were a bit smaller than these) to my desktop and put these in the family room instead. Upgraded sound at both locations...much joy.

I previously owned the R100 (which was very similar to this) but sold it to upgrade. I loved those speakers so when I was building a vintage stereo I knew I could trust these little KEF's to do the job! They look great and have a balanced sound (with more bass than you might expect, especially when near a back wall). At this price there isn't a speaker that can beat it. I recommend it to anybody getting into vinyl or who just want better sound for a small to medium size room. Also, if you're worried about depth due to being such a small speaker, a sub can be a relatively inexpensive way to get a fuller sound!

Pros: Great looking, quality build. Perfect for people getting into vinyl Clear, balanced sound

Cons: Nothing at this price, but does sound even larger with an added sub

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I wish I could give the Q150s 4.5 stars. They're phenomenal speakers for the price (and frankly I really only know this price range well, so I personally think they sound phenomenal in general). However they're a little tame in the upper mid-frequency range, which happens to be the range where a lot of my music takes place. Though you probably wouldn't even notice that unless there are a lot of layered sounds happening at once in that range (e.g. Led Zeppelin's Kashmir just comes across as a little dull). But if you are listening to a 3-5 piece rock band, or similar music, where only one instrument is in that frequency range these speakers will still sound fantastic. They sound great at low volumes and even better at high volumes. Interestingly, because the frequency response is so well balanced (besides the minor gripe I previously mentioned) they sound really good from almost anywhere in my house as well (i.e. I can be down the hall in a different room, and turn up these speakers, and if I can hear them they sound pretty good. I've actually been doing this quite a bit since I got these speakers). And vocals sound just about perfect. I guarantee If you use these speakers for movie or TV you will notice that instantly. I'll just mention one more thing that most people mention about these speakers: they can go really low. If you're just using them for music you probably won't need a subwoofer. Alternatively you could put the port plugs in and use a sub, but I did

Pros: Clarity Bass Very solid construction

Cons: A little tame in the mid upper-frequency range, though I should really probably say "nothing at this price (especially if you happen to get them on sale)"

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

They sound good (I am not an audiophile) so don't ask me what I mean by "good") and the cabinet is of high quality. I wish they were ported in the front as I had to plug the rear-located port due to too much mid-range bouncing off the wall. They do come with plugs for this. Maybe they would be worth full price if it were not for this. With the plugs in, I think they're good speakers on sale, not full price, as the sound quality diminishes with the plugs in.

Pros: build quality

Cons: rear ported

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I've been listening to the KEF Q150s for a couple of weeks now, and have no regrets about purchasing them. I'm using them in a simple two channel set up. I have them connected to a 30 wpc Pioneer integrated amp, NAD C538 cd player and a Fluance RT 84 with the Ortofon2M Blue stylus and also a B&W ASW 608 sub. The listening room is small, 12' x 15.5', and I have them on stands about 6' apart, 2' from the wall behind them, and the listening position is 9' away. This combo sounds fantastic to my ears. The soundstage is wide and deep, and with only 30 watts per channel, they can play as loud as I want them to without distortion. High frequencies are crisp and detailed without becoming fatiguing, and the midrange is smooth and well balanced, as for the bass, it's fine on it's own and goes reasonably deep, but in my set up, I've decided to use the subwoofer. Maybe if I was able to move them closer to the back wall, the sub might not be necessary. Anyway, I now understand the benefits of concentric speaker design, the imaging from these speakers is fantastic. Absolutely recommended!

Quality Bookshelf Speakers

Colt from Wake Forest, NC on 12/6/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

These are solid little bookshelf speakers. Good quality for the price. I'm using these as my surround back speakers and they fit in seamlessly with the bigger KEF Q350's that I'm using as my surround right and left speakers. When I decided to go from a 5.1 system to a 7.1 system I thought I should purchase two more 350's to even out the back. However, the 50% discount on the 150's made this deal impossible to pass up. All seven KEF speakers on the floor create a terrific soundstage and the smaller 150's more than hold their own against even the much bigger Q950 towers up front. Actually, surprisingly enough, the smaller 150's are rated to go down lower than even their bigger Q350 counterparts! I will say, after years of enjoying my 5.1.4 system, moving up to a 7.1.4 system is a huge upgrade. It really makes a big difference, and the two additional speakers also significantly enhances the Dolby Atmos experience. Lastly, I'm giving these 5 stars, not based on their stand alone performance. But for the money, these are a great option if you're looking to upgrade your system in the surround department. Don't overlook these, there is still a lot of great sounding KEF tech included with these.

Pros: Modern nice looking speaker. The Uni-Q driver sounds wonderful and is never harsh to listen to.

Cons: Expensive if not purchased when discounted. But KEF always seems to have these marked down.

Amazing Pair Of Speakers

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I picked up 2 pairs of these during the sale, one pair for my bedroom and the other pair of white ones for the system I bought for my daughter bedroom as a Christmas present. I can only comment of mine for the time being. First off I have a system in every room in my house, from Martin Logan Electrostats, Dahlquist DQ 10's, SVS Ultra Primes and an old pair of 2006 KEF XQ1's book shelves that are amazing. All 2.1 systems and all powered my separate pre/power amps. I really didn't need these but at the price I just had to have a pair that are replacing my Martin Logan 4i's that I had in the bedroom which I loved. At first I didn't like the KEF's because of the high end. Sounded muted compared to 4i's but now after a few days of listening they sound great. Imaging, sound stage and natural sound is great. The Martin Logan's sounded awesome because to the motion tweeter. I do use them for TV but mostly for bluetooth music and WOW they sound great. OK, I forgot to mention I have them hooked an SVS SB2000 woofer which I bought on sale here so for the price it is impossible to beat and I'm using the foam plugs in the port to give me more top end and less bass because the SVS does and amazing job. Can't wait the hear my daughters because she and her husband have a huge bedroom. With the right woofer they are fantastic for the price.

Pros: Very natural sound Quality build 5 yr warranty and Crutchfield's service

Cons: Grills should come with them rather than being an option. For the price, amazing speakers.

I upgraded from a pair of Polk RT25Is that I purchased from Crutchfield many years ago, subsequently replaced by a pair of B&W 685s. Both sets were silky smooth and fun to listen to. The KEF Q150s are, in a word, breathtaking. They are truly stunning by comparison. The imaging is scary good. So much fun to listen to my old play lists, as if for the first time! Sure, these don't have shockingly deep bass or silky smooth highs, but it doesn't matter. You just get totally absorbed by the music, and that is an amazing feature of these speakers.

I was looking for new bookshelf speakers for my office, and after hours of reading and watching reviews to nauseam it came to down to three: 1. KEF Q150's, 2. B&W 607s, and 3. ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2s. The KEF Q150's were by far the coolest looking speaker of the bunch but......by far the worst sounding to my ears. Spend the extra money and buy the B&W 607's, you won't regret it. Or save your hard earned money and buy the ELAC's when they're on sale. The speakers in my main listening area are Magnapan 1.7i's if that gives you an idea of the sound "signature" I like, clean and defined.

After much research, overthinking, and anxiety, I finally landed on the Kef Q150s for my desktop speakers. I started with the Audioengine A2+ Wireless, which didn't provide the sound I was looking for primarily due to their small size (remarkable for what they are). I then tried the Klipsch R-51PMs, which were an improvement, but the horns proved too much for a near field application, and they hissed continuously. I then took the plunge and went for a passive speaker/amp set up. I currently have them paired with a Marantz PM6007, and they sound fantastic with minimal tinkering. I have used them with both Tidal HiFi and a cheap turntable, and they easily meet my expectations. From my limited observations, I think these speakers shine as monitors or in a small room. These are my first set of quality speakers (typically use high-end headphones), and I couldn't be happier with them and Crutchfield's generous return policy.

Pros: Balanced sound Bass response Aesthetics Build quality

Cons: Wish the grills were included at this price point

So far these have been fantastic. I'm using a set as rears and surrounds, powered by an Anthem MRX 1120. I'm really impressed with the separation of sounds, very clean and accurate. This was a huge step up from Polk in-wall speakers. I've paired these with Q350's as fronts and Q650c center. I'll be adding Q50a atmos down the line.

Pros:

Cons: They are ported in the rear so wall mounting probably not recommended.

Best speakers I've ever owned. Not only do they look incredible on the shelf, but they sound phenomenal. I would recommend using an amp that is powerful enough to drive these speakers. They sound much better when hooked up to our 100W Sprout Amplifier than when hooked to our 5.1 Sony home theater system. The bass is deep enough that we don't feel like we need to use a sub-woofer, even for bass-heavy tracks.

I am running a set of these of my desktop. I was a little worried about the dynamics, so I changed my amplification to a Denon AVR 3805 which provides enough juice in direct stereo and it really opened up the clarity when I added my Schiit DAC to it. I purchased these on sale. Well worth it. These are better than the studio monitors I had as well.

These are really good speakers, and I like the minimalist look. Unfortunately, my set came with a small ding located on the top rear corner of one of the speaker cabinets. When comparing these speakers to its predecessor, the KEF Q100, I immediately noticed that this new offering had a smoother but "dialed down" sound, but the sound was still enough to be engaging. The KEF Q100 had a more energetic and "forward" sound. Both KEF models are good, and in the end, I think it comes down to the listener's preference. When I compared the KEF Q150 to the Martin Logan Motion LX 16, there was no comparison. The Q150 just sounded much more natural and musical. If there is a weakness to the KEF Q150, I would think that it is somewhere in the midrange. I just can't put my finger on it, but it is noticeable on some tracks. Otherwise, the bass and treble are absolutely beautiful. When properly set up, I truly believe most people will love these speakers.

Fantastic little speakers, I still can't believe the sound quality they deliver and they are starting to really open up after a few days of burn-in. Different people, different tastes, but pairing these with a Cambridge Audio CXA80 worked best for me. Clear treble, great mids render vocals very, very well, and powerful lows. Everything comes through with good separation, but in a controlled and coherent manner. Especially the lows surprised me quite a bit: these punch well above their size and while bass lacked a bit of attack and timing in the beginning, this seems to be improving quite a bit as the hours I have put on them increase. Sound stage is also great if you put them (in my experience, your room acoustics can vary) at least 8-10 feet apart. Build quality is about in line with this price point. Very happy with this purchase.

I have had the KEF Q150s just over a week now and played a variety of music (analog and digital), loud and quiet. These were an upgrade from 30 year old Wharfedale Super Diamonds. Great sound range and clarity at all volumes. I'm very happy with these.

Pros: Bass will purr.

Cons: No grille.

Completely surprised. These little speakers put out great sound. Replaced older floor speakers with 12" woofer. There was a gap in bass after adjust crossover to these so they would not clip out. Purchased the 12" 400w paper red subwoofer and fixed the issue

Pros: On sale great price great sound

Cons: Definitely need subwoofer if using for front main speakers

Wasn't sure about KEF's UNi-Q design, but was looking for something different in bookshelf speakers for my home office. Not much risk with Crutchfield's return policy, but glad I took the chance. They sound better every time I listen, great detail and punch no matter what type of music. Some vocals are just astounding. Driving them with the Onkyo TX-8220 receiver and paired with an Audisource sub. Very pleased with this setup. Not enough for removing a star, but it's just silly that they don't include speaker grills. I mean...really? Crutchfield rep did not mention, and I ended up ordering them after.

Pros: Vocals, detail, impressive for their size

Cons: Speakers are extra $$

Very happy with these speakers - I paired them with a new Denon DRA-800H and the sound is great. Very detailed highs, tight and solid bass, especially from such small speakers. Originally I was thinking a subwoofer would be needed, but these speakers hold their own quite admirably on notes from upright bass and bass guitar. Very impressed with KEF's design.

Pros: Sound bigger than their size

Cons: None

I'm very impressed with these little speakers. I have a set of B&W 686 in my other room that have I always loved. The KEF Q150 really surprised me, the sound is rich and full, with better bass output then the B&W's that cost twice as much.

Great speakers, but not for me

I was looking for speakers for use at my desk to replace the Elac B6's (originals) that I had moved to my home theater. I normally prefer warmer sound like the Elac but after I heard that the Kef Q150's were warmer than the Q100's I could not resist giving them a shot. I hooked them up to an Onkyo A9050. First thing I noticed was how good the imaging is on these speakers. When I got them placed properly, sounds moved around the room almost as good as headphones. Treble is also very clear with a sparkling quality. Bass is very tight and clean. Extension is not as good as the Elac B6's (which is to be expected with the smaller drivers). The reason they were not for me was the midrange. Often the midrange was pretty good. Other times, orchestral/acoustic music sometimes felt lifeless, like a portion of midrange was missing. A-B testing speakers with Elac's brought back the midrange I was missing on these tracks. With all the positives on these speakers, I completely understand the love for them. Sadly, they weren't for me and I ended up returning these.

Pros: Imaging is precise--almost headphone quality. Treble is sparkling clear. Bass is crisp and tight.

Cons: Midrange is missing at time. Bass does not extend as much as a larger driver.
