About the Boston Acoustics GTR10 TunableRadiator

Ken Nail
Would you like to add extra bass to your system without taking up extra space or adding more power? Boston's GTR TunableRadiators are "passive radiators" — shallow, non-powered speakers designed to be used in conjunction with Boston G5 subwoofers. When mounted into a box along with a G5 sub, the radiator's cone moves with the air pressure created by the powered G5 sub, reinforcing bass output without requiring extra power.

Adding this GTR10 passive radiator to a sub box with a 10" G5 subwoofer can increase output by up to 3 dB — that's almost twice the volume. And, since it's only 3 inches deep, you can add it to almost any sub box. The GTR10 has three tuning modes, allowing the listener to adjust the sound and bass output to their musical preferences and box size.

Product Research

Features

Product Overview: The Boston Acoustic GTR10 is a high performance tunable passive radiator which is designed for use exclusively with the Boston G5 series subwoofer in a sealed enclosure. A passive radiator uses the changes in air pressure inside the enclosure to move the cone and supplement the bass output. Note: The GTR10 can't be used as a standalone item--it is not a subwoofer, and cannot be connected to an amplifier.

Performance: This GTR10 provides a 3dB increase in bass output when paired with a 10" G5 subwoofer (item # 065G5104 or 065G51044) in a 0.5 cu. ft. sealed enclosure. There is no need to increase the volume of the enclosure or add amplifier power.

Materials: The GTR10 features a copolymer cone with a raised polypropylene dustcap. The front cone and the rear diaphragm both have large foam surrounds. The frame is made of strong, lightweight aluminum. The wraparound gasket provides an airtight seal no matter whether the unit is top- or bottom-mounted.

Tunable: This passive radiator can be tuned to one of three desired frequencies by adding or removing the supplied tuning weights. The tuning weights are held in place by a single screw under the removable dustcap. In a 0.5 cu. ft. enclosure, you can tune the GTR10 as follows:

Tuning Mode Tuning Frequency Small Tuning Mass Large Tuning Mass
Tuning Mode 1 49Hz 0 0
Tuning Mode 2 35Hz 1 1
Tuning Mode 3 30Hz 0 2

Mounting: The GTR10 mounts in an enclosure just like a standard subwoofer. It requires only 3" mounting depth. Note: The 3" mounting depth includes the required amount of space behind the passive radiator.

Specifications Note: Since the unit has no magnet, the listed "magnet" diameter is the measurement across the bottom portion of the frame.
