What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound format that places sound effects in space around you with pinpoint accuracy. With the right gear, you can hear the movie’s score and special effects above, beside, in front of, and behind you — just like you would in a theater.

When Atmos debuted in 2014 it was an innovation in home theater sound. Initially it was used solely in movie soundtracks, and the titles available for home viewing were limited. But in recent years, the technology has made its way into lots of movies, as well as video games and music.

Building your Atmos system

The key to great Atmos sound? Adding convincing overhead effects to an already excellent surround system. If you have a small room, a single pair of in-ceiling speakers over your seating position does this nicely. If you have a large room (or simply want fuller sound), a second pair of overhead speakers behind you expands and strengthens your system’s soundstage.
