You can mount them in your boat's cockpit or bulkhead walls, either as stand-alones or in conjunction with a subwoofer.

Built for marine conditions

These rugged speakers deliver powerful output that'll cut through the combination of wind, water, and engine noise. The weatherproof cone is suspended in a durable synthetic rubber surround for great sound and long life. The UV-resistant polymer basket protects the entire structure and ensures that the white grilles will look factory-fresh even after years of punishing sunlight. All JL Audio marine speakers are designed to meet or exceed industry standards for salt, fog, and moisture resistance.

JL Audio M880-CCX 8.8: marine speakers

The polymer basket protects the sub's inner works, and the UV-resistant grille will look good for years.

No compromises on sound quality

These big, beefy coaxial speakers offer a huge performance advantage over conventional 6.5" marine coaxials and even JL's already-impressive 7.7" models. Thanks to 36% more cone area and almost double the excursion capability, the M880-CCX's are capable of +6 dB greater low-frequency output than the M770-CCX speakers.

The bass is so impressive that the M880-CCX really doesn't need a subwoofer to pump out serious low-frequency thump. But if you do use a subwoofer, you'll hear vastly better dynamics and mid-bass impact. If you want big, full sound on your boat, these speakers, combined with a subwoofer, are a great choice.

The 1.2" treated-silk dome tweeters render brilliant highs, and they're mounted directly to the grilles for optimal sound radiation. You'll hear all the details of your music, even when the throttle is forward and you're skimming over the waves. High-quality, true 2-way crossovers make the woofer and tweeter work in perfect concert. You don't have to worry about mounting the crossovers — they're attached directly to the woofer basket.

Features

Marine Tested: JL Audio's marine speakers are tested in ultraviolet chambers (to simulate years of sun exposure) and salt fog chambers (to simulate years of exposure to salt-water environments).

Woofers: The JL Audio M880-CCX-CG-WH are 8.8" speakers (8.8" is the nominal size, they don't actually measure 8.8") and the woofers have approximately 36% more cone area than typical 6.5" designs. The cones are injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene with synthetic rubber surrounds; they are specifically formulated with UV inhibitors for marine use. The woofers also use marine-grade synthetic fiber spiders with progressive roll designs to withstand high humidity.

Tweeters: The tweeters are 1.2" silk domes, specially treated to withstand UV exposure and salt water spray. The dome tweeters use neodymium magnets to improve efficiency and are Ferrofluid-cooled and damped for better response and power handling. The crossover offers two tweeter output options, flat and +2 dB (adjusted by changing a jumper wire position).

Polymer Basket and Grille: The specifically engineered polymer baskets and grilles are corrosion and UV-resistant. The basket encloses the woofer's motor system to prevent internal corrosion.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the M880 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Crossover: The JL audio marine speakers utilize a true 2-way crossover network with 1st order low-pass and 2nd order high-pass circuits. The crossover network also features a polyswitch solid-state tweeter protection circuit to prevent tweeter failures. The crossover offers two tweeter output options, flat and +2 dB.

Infinite-Baffle Operation: The M880 is optimized for infinite baffle operation, so it can be installed in a variety of locations without the need for a dedicated enclosure.

Q
Can the tweeter be mounted in a seperate location or can it only be mounted on the grill?

For me, it was easier to mount on inside fairing. I removed a few gauges ( oil & temp) they fit perfectly in those areas. Your electronic sensors still work. They have been great. Hope this helps.

The speaker is a system. I haven't tried to remount the tweeter.

I would like to mount these in a patio ceiling. Would that work? If not, any ideas on a good patio, in ceiling speaker?

It would work but these are heavy speakers you will have to use long screws!

Yes I think that would work. Keep in mind two things, the depth of the speaker. Make sure you have that space. And the weight, its heavier than a regular ceiling speaker and I would brace the ceiling with wood or other structural sub surface to support the added weight.

Q
what is the actual out side diameter of these?

Thanks for your question. The outer frame of the basket is 8.975". The grille is 8.795" across. The cutout diameter is 7.293". Hope this information helps.

I am considering using these speakers for my home stereo. What would be the proper box size and type for this application. ...and what if I were to use 2 of these speakers per box in series to create an 8 Ohm load? Thanks.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: We don't typically recommend using car gear in a home application. However, you can find several discussion about this on our community which may be helpful: http://community.crutchfield.com/search/default.aspx#q=car+audio+home If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
