Video: Alpine V-Power car amplifiers

Digital design allows them to be so small

I've been a camera nut all my life, so it makes sense I'd end up being a video producer. Of course, it has been a roundabout journey for me, as I started at Crutchfield in 2007 writing about car audio gear. Over the years I've learned about all the electronic items we sell, and it is my job to make sure we are making videos that you will find useful, whether you're shopping for something specific or trying to install some new gear yourself. My job is a lot of fun because I get to play around with all the cool stuff you see on our website while I'm making videos about it. Getting hands-on with the gear helps me see what I should show you about a product, though the flip side is my personal wish list is a mile long...

Alpine made their V-Power amps 40% smaller for 2013, so they'll fit in more places than ever. Plus they employ some smart technology called Enhanced Shutdown Performance, which rolls back the output a bit when the amp threatens to overheat from playing at its limits too long. Instead of shutting down completely, it continues playing your music, until it cools enough to return to full power.

Zak: I'm at the Alpine booth at CES 2013 and Steve, tell us about the new V-Power amps.

Steve: Well, V-Power has always been a very successful amplifier line for Alpine. As a matter of fact, the monoblock V-Power that's currently available has been the best-selling amp in the United States for the last three years running. So we're very proud of that, and we wanted to follow that up with a brand new V-Power line that really takes advantage of some of the newer digital amp technology that we've developed over the last five or six years.

So the new V-Power line is completely digital, and that offers many advantages. First of all, the amplifiers are much smaller. They're about 40% smaller than the previous generation. It also means they waste less heat, and they waste less power from the battery. So it's a much more efficient solution for the car. So we're offering the same power level in a 40% smaller chassis, with the same price.

And we've offered a lot more of the advanced features that we've offered in PDX and MRX amplifiers over the last couple of years — things like the ability to control the subwoofer level through the RUX knob, the ability to have speaker-level input so that the customer can hook it to their factory system without having to add an aftermarket head unit, and also the ability to easily connect to big gauge, high-quality wiring. So the brand new MRV line is going to be available in February of 2013.
