Tara, Crutchfield writer and audio enthusiast, tries out the Bose® SoundLink® Wireless Mobile speaker, and tells us about its Bluetooth® wireless capabilities, portable design and sound quality.
Tara: I had the chance to try out the Bose SoundLink. And this is a speaker that's designed to be completely wireless. First off, it has built-in Bluetooth so you can connect to a Bluetooth capable device like a smart phone, an iPad tablet, even a computer and wirelessly stream music to this speaker. In my case I used an iPhone, and that was great because I could put the speaker across the room on a counter and keep the phone with me and make adjustments to songs, to volume. You can stream music that's stored on your device or on your computer but you can also access the aps and the services that you can get to on your phone as well. So I used Spotify and was able to queue up a bunch of different albums, play a bunch of different songs, and really test out and see how the speaker sounded.
The speaker is relatively small, but it has a pretty big sound for being so tiny. I listen to a lot of acoustic music, so I listened to a couple of tracks that had some pretty great harmonies in them and the harmonies came through really clear, very spacious. And the mids and the low-end with the speaker were also really good as well. The acoustic guitar I was listening to was really clear and I could almost hear the guitarist kind of picking at the strings and the bass and drum line was really rich without being boomy.
The SoundLink has a built-in battery and when it's fully charged you'll get about eight hours of playback. That means it's great to take with you on a picnic, if you're listening in a gazebo like we are right now, or even to the beach (as long as you don't get it wet or full of sand). And when you're ready to take it somewhere, the cover on it folds around and that powers down the SoundLink automatically so you can save battery. And it folds up flat so you can easily take it in a car or even pack it into a suitcase.
