Video: Canon PowerShot G1 X digital camera

I've been a camera nut all my life, so it makes sense I'd end up being a video producer. Of course, it has been a roundabout journey for me, as I started at Crutchfield in 2007 writing about car audio gear. Over the years I've learned about all the electronic items we sell, and it is my job to make sure we are making videos that you will find useful, whether you're shopping for something specific or trying to install some new gear yourself. My job is a lot of fun because I get to play around with all the cool stuff you see on our website while I'm making videos about it. Getting hands-on with the gear helps me see what I should show you about a product, though the flip side is my personal wish list is a mile long...

Canon PowerShot G1 X digital camera

Zak: Hi. I'm here at the Canon booth at CES 2012 holding something that I'm very excited to share with you. It's the brand new PowerShot G1 X. It's got totally new technology inside, the best of which is a brand new, enormous 1.5" diagonal sensor.

Now to put that in perspective, that's a little bigger than the Micro Four Thirds sensor found in other cameras, and a little smaller than your typical DSLR, so we're talking many times bigger than the PowerShot line has showed you before. What that means: more control over depth of field so you get nice blurry backgrounds, also great for low-light because it's a 14-megapixel model so the pixels are pretty big and can gather a lot of light with that big sensor. It's also great for your video because you can get that nice professional looking video where the, you know, your kid is in focus in the foreground and you've got blurry backgrounds.

It's a 28-112 zoom lens built in so it goes from wide to a nice portrait focal length. The Powershot G1 X has a fantastic 920,000 dot screen, and that means everything's gonna be really sharp on there. That's great for shooting videos and anytime you're using it. It flips and swivels, which is nice if you're walking around. You can flip it this way and protect it. Also, an optical viewfinder for whenever you want that. Bright light, sometimes out in the sun, it's hard to see a screen so a little eye sensor, when you get close, will flip over from the screen to the viewfinder. It's also got the brand new DIGIC 5 Canon processor inside which makes everything happen really fast—fast focus, fast from shot to shot, fast from power up to being able to shoot. So that's the brand new PowerShot G1 X from Canon.
