Video: Mirage Nanosat® Speakers

Most of the people appearing in our videos are employees at Crutchfield. We pull in folks from around the company to share their expertise. A lot of our on-camera stars come from our Advisor Group — they help people choose the right gear via phone, email and chat every day, so they're good at explaining the products and technologies.

Crutchfield experts Amanda and Chris share their impressions of Mirage's Nanosat and Nanosat Prestige speakers in this short video.

Chris: Hi, I'm Chris.

Amanda: And I'm Amanda. And we're here in the Crutchfield studio today to give you a quick look at Mirage's Nanosat speakers. We have the 5.1 Nanosat system here, but what we're going to talk about will cover all of the Nanosat speakers.

Chris: Right. I really love their modern design. They're really small and sleek, as you can see. And they have more of a contoured shape — not the big boxy speakers that you're used to from your childhood. They look really great in your room.

Amanda: Yeah, and I can say from personal experience that they don't just look good, but they also sound really good. I've been looking forward to doing this video for quite awhile, because I've got a Mirage Nanosat system at home, and I really love it. So, the key to Mirage's really good sound is something that they call Omnipolar technology. What that means, basically, is that when the sound comes up out of this driver, it hits this thing here which is called an Omniguide. And that disperses the sound evenly in a 360-degree pattern. So what that gives you is just a really big, open soundfield — more than you think you might get from a speaker of this size. Also, a really big "sweet spot," so it's not just the person sitting smack-dab in the middle of the room who gets the most accurate surround effects.

Chris: Right. It's everybody on your sectional couch. And I know, because I've been there. It's really great, too, for the fact that it gives you really seamless audio. You don't hear the gaps from speaker to speaker. If you're watching a movie, and there are ambient effects, you can't tell, "Oh, that came from that speaker or that came from that speaker," which is really great. And this system gives you really flexible placement options as well, because of the design of the 360 dispersion. So you can place them — pretty much, you want to stick to guidelines, but you can even place them high up, near the ceiling, and get them out of the way.

Amanda: Kind of hide them in a corner, which you can't do with most speakers, so that's really handy. Now this is a 5.1 pre-matched system here, for the Nanosats. Mirage also makes something called the Nanosat Prestige speaker, and they step up in a couple of key ways.

Chris: The most obvious is that they have a high-gloss finish, and you can also get them in several colors. You can get white, rosewood, or black. The center channel speaker only comes in black. But the real step-up is that they have a higher sensitivity, which just means they're more efficient. It takes less power from your receiver to give you higher volume.

Amanda: Now, to make your own Nanosat system or Nanosat Prestige system, there are a few different ways you can go about doing that. The first, of course, is the pre-matched Nanosat 5.1 system, which comes with a sub. You can also get a five-speaker Nanosat Prestige system, which doesn't come with a sub, so you'll definitely want to add one. And that's in black. Or, of course, you can also just build your own from the ground up.

Chris: Right, exactly. So if you want to learn more about Mirage's Nanosat speakers, just go to
