A little confusing

Jim from Richmond, VA on 9/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product ended up installing in the space to hold the radio, but, not securely. I had a difficult time getting the side-ears to snap into place. So much so, that I scrapped them. As a result, the radio and Dash Kit likes to leap out of my dash at a predictable bumpy spot on the road. I'll need part of an additional saturday to try to add the ears back in for better security. Looks-wise, it is a great product.

Pros: Looks Great

Cons: Difficult to get the side-ears to snap into place.

1999 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit the Boss BV860B perfectly once I figured out to remove a piece from around the opening for the radio itself. That piece should not have been sent assembled as this kit covers several vehicles, mine being a 1999 Ranger did not need the piece. Otherwise this Dash Kit worked.

Pros: Easy to use

Cons: Some of the kit was assembled, the instructions did not show this part, and that part had to be removed to fit the new Boss BV860B.

This dash kit is really nice. Easy to install. Color is like one pigment off from matching but I don't care. Very sleek and looks great in the dash. I'm impressed with the fit and style. The only problem I found is I'm not to sure how you can pull the dash kit out if say you had to replace the fuse in the head unit. Over all I'm very happy with this dash kit. Thanks...

Pros: Looks great, fit perfectly, easy to install.

Cons: Not to sure how to go about pulling the kit out (without breaking it) if I needed to do something with my head unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works but is a little flimsy. My Ford holds the unit with two screws at the base of the unit. That is fine for the OEM unit that has a metal case but this plastic kit is a little pliable. Everything is secure except when I disconnect the USB cable from the head unit, in which case the head unit pulls forward a bit before the cable is disconnected. It should be reinforced with metal angle brackets at the bottom to keep it secure.

Pros: looks nice

Cons: flimsy

American International FMK-550 Dash Kit

Anonymous from Lakeland, FL on 5/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well. Instructions could be a little more detailed especially for the back/center support bracket. The bracket was too long and would not clear the back of the radio unit. The instructions did not explain how to customize or adjust the fit. Noticed on a Youtube video the bracket was cut to make it fit. Not sure if that was the correct solution, but it solved the problem. Question the functionality of the pocket. Too small and shallow to be good for storage.

Pros: Simple straight forward design.

Cons: Could provide more info. on how to make adjustments to ensure proper fit.

Trim was fine... My issue was the rear support. Now way to install with the support on the trim housing, no way to install the support after the trim is in... Maybe I missed something, neither the install instructions from Crutchfield or the manuf. addressed the issue at all. My concern will be longevity, will the trim hold over time without the rear support considering the vibrations from a pick up truck?

Anonymous from Boston, MA on 12/14/2016

2006 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm really surprised this dash kit has such good reviews. I found this kit to be a complete piece of junk and here's why: 1. its cheaply made-for my Ranger I had to break off the screw tabs (as directed) and the plastic broke off in jagged pieces making it not only difficult to install but made the kit look ugly. In addition, the anchor tabs, once they are clicked in, forget ever taking your stereo out again. On first attempt at installing I realized the dash kit was a bit crooked so I tried pushing the pins inward to remove the system. The pins snapped right off immediately. 2. the pocket space is horrendous-the Ranger has plenty of room for a full length and width pocked and yet this kits' pocket can barely fit an iPhone 6 sideways! 3. It's poorly designed: there is a rear support bracket, but guess what? you can't even use it! The rear support bracket (shaped like a triangle) screws into the back of the pocket and is supposed to slide into the groove in your cars dash to support and stabilize the system. However since the pocked on this model is so short, once you put the stereo in, the stereo hits the bracket! I thought maybe the support bracket would attach to the stereo itself but there was no screw hole. Oh, and on top of that the screw hole in the back of the pocket isn't even threaded. I love Crutchfield and have been using them for years, but their dash kits are really horrendous. No wonder they are free when you buy a stereo.

Pros: Free

Cons: Just about everything

This integrates well with my Alpine stereo install in my 2006 Ford Crown Vic Police Interceptor. I was concerned how a single DIN radio would look in a double DIN opening. It looks great! It was easy to use, instructions are clear and concise. They give you parts for nearly every imaginable possibility. In my case I didn't need most of them and had to cut the tabs off.

Pros: Price was right, looks classy when installed. Pocket functional.

While it is designed to fit many vehicles it worked like it was only designed to fit my 2002 Ford Escape! I quick removal of the Mustang mounting tabs and BOOM! It snapped right into place. Filled the over-sized factory hole perfectly. I simply slid the DIN adapter from my new head unit in bent the tabs over and it looks and functions great.

This unit was incredibly easy to use and install. Required me to remove a couple of plastic tabs in order to be used in my vehicle - 1999 F-150 - but it snapped right into place and gave the installation a nice, professional look.

Installed a new head unit in a 03 Ford Explorer with this kit. At first I thought they shipped the wrong kit because neither the radio or radio tray fit through the opening in the front. A quick call to crutchfield and they got me back on track. The front opening has a removable bezel that pops of, it fits so well when installed it's hard to see the seam.

Not too happy, had to do lots of trimming

Drew from Owatonna, MN on 9/6/2016

2002 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a challenge. Not all the pieces fit right, had to do lots of trimming to parts I would expect to work without doing that. Felt like it was going to break with the force I had to use to get everything to fit. And after I got the radio installed in my truck, this dash kit doesn't fit directly into the existing radio housing perfectly, so my radio trim bezel for my truck didn't fit on my dash correctly. I had to take a dremmel to my dash piece so it would go back to where it was supposed to. With all that said, it isn't a bad dash kit, but I hope there are better ones. No one would be able to tell I had issues just by looking at it. so it gets a 3.

Pros: radio fits

Cons: directions were vague lots of trimming to fit cheap tabs broke upon normal installation

Pros: Easy to use, inexpensive for the amount of beauty, quick shipping, and easy full instructions that exact'y fit the dash inserts, rugged design.

Cons: Needed a bit of forcing but eventually snapped into place perfectly, glad it was built well if not might of snapped the housing pushing it together, some of the snap points weren't fully cleared nothing a razorblade cou'dnt clean up.

Very confusing instructions. Finally figured out that I only really needed the outer sleeve, that accepted the installation sleeve, not the various side pieces, rear support, etc. Took hours trying to figure all this out, and if you can put the side pieces in place by following the instructions, you get the prize. Once I found that I only needed the mounting sleeve, all I had to do was figure out that I needed to pry the trim ring off the Pioneer stereo, install it in the sleeve, and replace the trim ring. There was a trim ring included, a replacement, but it did not fit my application. Fortunately the old one fit. The whole experience was like that. Things did wind up fitting, working, doing the job, but he instructions need a lot of work.

Pros: Did the job.

Cons: Took a lot of head scratching to get there.

Real easy installation process using this kit. The Pioneer media player was very lightweight and fit perfectly into the frame kit. No hassles.

Pros: Easy of application. Easy to understand manual. Fits securely in dash and holds unit tightly..

Cons: With the Mazda you need to cut off the two top mounting tabs ( not needed for this application). Be careful when doing so to not scratch the outer edge of the remaining frame piece. A dremel works very well for cutting the tabs.

Crutchfield needs to drop this vendor. Cheap junk.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This will never make it to the web page, but I am so disappointed in Crutchfield in their choice of "dash installation kit" supplier. The stuff is junk, badly explained and leaves me with a queasy feeling as to how secure my unit is in dash. I purchased a Kenwood CD player (which I am totally satisfied with) but the "free" custom installation kit was worth what I paid for. Follow the instructions (right) could not get the unit to slide into the kit pocket; finally called Crutchfield tech support (great service) and was prepared for a long discussion but after about 30 seconds of explaining my problem , the tech guy laughed "yeah they have a lot of calls on this, you need to pop the face plate off". Well it was not mentioned in the instructions and looking at it, it did not seen that it pops off. But it did. I finally got the unit inside and the only security it has is the din sleeve of the Kenwood. Here's my point charge me for a well made installation kit. The wiring harness and Posi connectors were great, but this cheap floppy dash kit ruined the whole purchase satisfaction for me.

Pros: Free

Cons: Cheaply made, incomplete installation instructions and sloppy fit.

Even after making a call to customer service I was not impressed with this dash kit it is perfect for a full-size stereo single Din but not good for a media player as there is no way to hook up the back support bracket customer service said you don't need the bracket but without it the stereo shakes up-and-down and vibrates while driving down the road also the surround ring was pretty attached when I got my kit and I had to snap it off in order to install the sleeve which damage the tabs on it and I had to glue it before I installed it please note this is The first time I have used a dash kit that wasn't perfect:(

This kit works correctly and fits like a dream however; the reason for the four star and not five is because the instructions are not accurate for the model of car. The instructions said I should leave the tabs on and might have to use spacers. This was incorrect. I needed to remove the tabs or it wouldn't fit at all. Not a big issue but it did leave me stumped for about 10 minuets.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great kit that has almost everything you need with exception of experience using it. Part of the instructions are incomplete for some installations and the back support does not work well because it interferes with the stereo. The easy fix for the back support is using the existing one from the radio you are replacing if that is what you're doing.

Pros: Parts to allow almost any installation configuration

Cons: Inadequate instructions. Fitting parts and some installation details are missing.

Pros: Great fit & Finish

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2004 Ford Excursion. The dashboard trim piece is held in place by 2 screws above the factory radio and a bunch of spring clips. This is held in by 6 spring clips That Can Only Be Released From The Back. So if you install this with the 2 screws in place, there is no way to remove either the trim panel or the radio without breaking something. After install, I realized the best install is probably to put the storage area above the aftermarket radio and drill access holes for the dash screws, which can then be accessed with an offset screwdriver.

Pros: Fits well.

Cons: Instructions/warnings/options incomplete.

This unit worked in my 2008 Ford Ranger perfectly. I've read other reviews that claim it "didn't fit" their Ranger, and that it was "wobbly" after installation. It says on the FIRST PAGE of the instructions for this that you have to file down a couple plastic fit nubs that are required for other model cars in order to use this unit in a Ford Ranger. It took about 1 minute to file them off and it installed with no wobble. READ THE DIRECTIONS, PEOPLE!

Not a good match for a Pioneer head in a Ford Escape

Motoguy from Blaine, WA on 9/16/2015

2007 Ford Escape
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've installed 6 Pioneer receivers in various of our family's cars, all bought from Crutchfield and all installed using the supplied installation kits. This is the first one I've had a problem with . The (heavy) Ford factory CD unit is supported at its lower edge by a nylon "slider" that rides on a "track" in the dash. This mounting kit includes a piece that should provide this function BUT it cannot be fitted to Pioneer head unit I bought (there is no place on the Pioneer to attach it). It took me a few hours of "chair and stare" to figure out how to re-purpose the factory support for use with the new Pioneer unit. Very unlike Crutchfield-supplied install kits to leave me in a bind like this. It all works fine now but the delay and fiddly work involved was annoying.

Pros: Very complete kit. Thorough, well-written instructions

Cons: Critical rear support as supplied could not be used with the Pioneer head unit I bought.

The instructions are missing a few of the finer details. You can figure it out by trial and error however. Installation was for an early 2000 Ford Ranger.

Pros: Pretty cheap considering most kits go for $15+. Matched my radio and dash pretty well.

Cons: Some of the plastic tabs that is supposed to hold the radio in the dash broke off before I could get it into the dash, making it useless for actually keeping the radio in the dash. Cheap plastic or maybe due to being made to fit multiple vehicles, who knows. Had to use the mounting sleeve on the radio to keep the radio in the dash.

Since the old kit somehow broke and I needed to replace the it, I was glad that there was still a few around. Did a reinstall with the new kit and it fit like a glove, with the helper bracket that I should have used to help the back of the radio be supported and slide on the factory rail.

Pros: fits in the same opening as the old one.

Cons: Doesn't fit the dash contour, but it does fit. instructions are a bit confusing as to break off one of the tabs. I think that it would make it weaker as to staying in the dash.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave it 4 stars because in the end it generally worked, looks fine in place in the dash and was FREE with my order. I didn't give it 5 stars because in my application (2002 Ford Ranger) the built in cubby slot is useless as anything you put in it will fly right back out the moment you accelerate forward. Also, I never was able to get it to fully latch into place in the dash even after removing the "nubs". That said, it solidly stays in place even while driving faster than normal over extremely rough terrain (plowed field, washboard surface gravel roads with potholes,...). So all in all I'm not really complaining even with its shortcomings.

Pros: As already mentioned.

Cons: As already mentioned.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adaptor plate works... I am simply glad they still had this for such an old car as mine. It not perfect and you need to fiddle with it a bit but it simply does the job of adapting the newer radios to these old ford style 2 din openings.

Pros: I was able to put in the radio I wanted. Very cheap in cost.

Cons: Its not a perfect fit as it uses simple plastic molded clips along the edge to hold it into the original opening. Some clips would not grab leaving the adaptor plate moveable. I found that I was able to push down more of the din sleeve tabs for the radio itself and they grabbed onto the original opening in the spots that needed to be secured.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit is not really compatible with a 2010 ford ranger truck dash. The instructions were completely wrong and the soft plastic prongs broke as I followed the directions to install. The plastic side pieces wouldn't fit, and the metal sleeve did not have bendable prongs in the right places to secure it to the plastic frame. The cheap plastic prongs broke on the main frame. .A call to tech support informed me to install it completely backwards from the printed instructions. I did, but the install is not secure. This is a truck, and it needs a positive attachment, not ill fitting plastic prongs.

Pros: It's black.

Cons: Does not hold radio in dash. Install instructions completely wrong for the ranger.

used kit on 2000 ford F 250. this kid is a generic single din kit that replaces a dual din. although the kit fit inside the space needed for the stereo I was not pleased and would not order again after hafting to modify the mounting for the stereo. I would still recommend purchasing connectors and stereos from Crutchfield, however in this situation the mounting kit was too generic and did not fulfill my needs correctly.

Pros: None

Cons: Too generic for proper mounting in all vehicles it covers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cheap plastic. Had to make a small cut to get it to fit. Snaps into place, but the side clips are small and don't really hold all that great. The rear support sticks up into where the radio goes, so its either cut it off or leave it off. The small little cubby space just looks like a dust collector.

Pros: It works, sort of.

Cons: If there was an alternative I'd buy it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This installation bezel does fit (Ranger pickup) very nicely, looks great. The actual final push in of the unit to clip it in took much more force that I thought. It just wouldn't clip in the opening with a normal push. I finally pushed really hard, thinking I would break it, and it finally clipped in place. Once that was done it looked great. I wasn't sure how many of the nubs to grind off for the Ranger pickup, there were a few more nubs than shown on the diagram. The bezel had a removable faceplate that wasn't addressed in the instructions. My Sony radio bezel was used instead, but either would have worked.

Pros: Converts double din to single din. Fits well.

Cons: Instructions a bit lacking, but good enough to get through it.

This was the install kit for a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 in a 97 Crown Victoria. It eventually worked very well. The instructions with this were fairly basic and minimal which made it more difficult to install for a beginner. It was only due to past tinkering abilities that I was able to install using this unit.

Pros: Simple.

Cons: Instructions are not that clear. Crutchfield didn't seem to provide extra instructions to make this easier for my car, unless i missed them. I would suggest Crutchfield create a PDF instruction set for this that matches the receiver and automobile, if they have time.

2001 Mercury Grand Marquis
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ultimately everything worked out fine and it was an easy install, after I got more information. Crutchfield Tech Support is pretty awesome, too. But this adapter--it's like the instruction think they flow easily from one task to the next, but they really don't. For instance, it does not say to put it all together and put the radio in it before putting it in the dash. I thought, logically, you put the adapter kit in, and then hook the wires up, and then push the radio in. If you try to do it like that, the adapter is loose, and I thought there was something wrong. I think it's because the instructions cover all possible vehicles that can use it, but still, some clarity would have saved me a lot of frusttration

Pros: Awesome, clean fit. looks good.

Cons: Needs to have more clearly written instructions.

2002 Ford Expedition
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought my 2002 Ford Expedition at an Insurance auction recently. The story behind my SUV is that it had been stolen from the previous owner and a "sound system" had been pulled out of the dash and back area by the thieves. The perpetrators destroyed the part of the dash board structure where the radio goes. I went to my local "Pick-Your-Part" and was able to find replacement parts. Now to match up the Ford dash parts to the American International FMK-550 In-dash Receiver Kit for a perfect fit. I sanded an eighth of an inch from the front square face of the dash bracket and then just needed to trim with a Dremel type tool, two small areas from the receiver kit. It all fit snug. to finish I epoxied the receiver kit to the dash bracket then install the radio sleeve. This has made for an extremely solid fit.

Pros: Overall the American International FMK-550 In-dash Receiver Kit was a good fit even without my adjustments. I was able to get "factory installed" results. Crutchfield's easy to follow installation guild was a real asset.

Cons: No negative aspects

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first one I received with my head unit was broken in shipment. It was promptly replaced by the folks at Crutchfield. The install was pretty straightforward, but the fit was less than great. The clips, or "barbs," that secure the mount do not latch at the bottom of the dash opening. The mount tends to move quite a bit; a little less once the head unit is in place. It was free, after all, and it seems to work OK and is not all that noticeable unless I really press a button harder than I should. I will probably be looking to replace this mount with something by Metra, but until then I'll make good use of the JVC remote. :o)

Pros: Low cost; easy installation

Cons: Poor fit, not secure; easily damaged

American international FMK-550 in dash receiver kit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit was very simple to install in my 2003 crown Victoria. It comes with step by step model specific instructions. It accommodates the Sony explode receiver that I put in perfectly. My dash is whole once again thanks to the crutch field team.

Pros: It has a cubby whole that is big enough to store my iPhone in while I have it plugged in for radio apps or speaker phone.

Cons: The cubby whole is only able to fit on top of my radio when applied in my make and model.

find the page with your particular vehicles directions. installation is very simple. it just snaps in place in ford trucks. however thats its downfall as well, other than four little plastic tabs snapping it into place, nothing "secures" your radio in place.

Pros: fits well, looks good in dash

Cons: does't give you a "warm fuzzy" feeling that the radio is secured in the dash

Not much to say here, once I got it figured out about 90% there was still something that didn't want to cooperate. Well, when all else fails, just beast mode. I did, whatever needed to snap off did and the unit was in nice and snug.

Pros: Perfect fit, no screws needed

Cons: the instructions did virtually nothing for me, not easy to understand but it works....and that's what matters.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this frame as part of a kit to install a new Sony head unit in my '03 Mustang. Very happy with the Sony and all the other install components except this bit. The instructions were not very clear (they were aimed at covering multiple models of vehicle without going into a lot of detail on any AND the printing was very faint and hard to read) and the individual parts just did not fit together as described. this is not my first time round the block at this sort of thing so i am quite prepared to consider i was doing something wrong but am pretty sure i wasn't. in any case, after a few modifications and tweaks (which the instruction suggest you might need to do without being specific) i was installed and does the job. Just ended up being a lot my difficult than expected,

Pros: Does the job of housing the stereo and provides a pocket/shelf for the iPod.

Cons: Poor instructions, needed modification, harder to install than expected.

Didn't get to use this kit. The primary component is fragile but not packaged so that it is protected. Mine arrived broken, so I bought a kit, locally, of lesser quality that I had to reengineered to make It work properly. This kit would have worked much better than the other one, if it had not been broken.

Pros: This kit is pretty well designed to work well.

Cons: Package by the manufacturer very poorly. The plastic bag does not protect the bulky, but fragile, main component from being broken during handling.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter worked fine for installing an old Aiwa single DIN stereo I had into a 2001 F250. Just needed to cut off the Mustang tabs like the instructions said, and it snaps into the opening tightly. I put the stereo opening on the bottom because there is a bar in the dash to support the stereo. The other way it would have only been supported by this frame. Make sure you are ready to go with your wiring already done and clean the area around it ahead of time because it looks to me like once it is snapped in there is no way to get it back out without breaking the snaps. Fits tight and works fine. The black bezel that comes with it is a better fit than the one that came with the Aiwa so I used it, but you can take if off and use your own if it fits and/or looks better. I did not need any of the various other parts that came with it, just the frame and bezel.

Pros: Nice tight fit.

Cons: Had to cut off parts, not a big deal.

F-150 installation tips

Tom from Louisiana on 2/2/2014

2001 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm going to attempt to give a few pointers to anyone who's installing this kit in an F-150. I drive a 2001 lariat supercrew so I can't speak for the older or newer models but if I'm not mistaken this should work on '99-'03 models. Quite simply you need to use the ISO installation method in the instructions rather than the DIN method. The DIN method uses the plastic sleeve to secure your cd player whereas the ISO method uses the plastic support brackets with self tapping screws. You will also need to break or cut off the 2 plastic tabs on the top of the installation kit. Also, when you use the ISO method there are 2 plastic side brackets and one smaller rear bracket that hold your CD player in place..you won't need the rear bracket. Only the 2 side ones. The F150 already has a metal rear bracket attached to the frame where your CD player slides in. I'm an ATV mechanic who does custom accessories including stereo systems but these are usually vehicle specific and I don't have much experience dealing with universal kits and I found the instructions for this one to be a bit lacking. This really was a simple install that took about an hour and a half and that includes the time it took me to figure out how to put together the kit for the ISO method. This may sound complicated but once you get the kit you'll see what I'm talking about and you only need a few basic tools. Over all I was pleased with the way it turned out but I'm giving it 4 stars because of the instructions.

Pros: Looks good, easy to install once you figure out what method/parts to use

Cons: Instructions were about as clear as mud in some areas and the illustrations weren't much help

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit covers a large variety of vehicles, so I cannot expect it to work perfectly on all of the. I was using it on a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. I like that I could install a single din radio in the place of the factory unit, and it added a storage pocket above the radio. I put the kit together and it was very easy. I installed the cage from the radio and then put the assembly into the dash. It did fit well but the little lock tabs on the sides did not lock the plastic mount into the dash securely. If you tried to move it at all, you can easily pop it loose. I ended up bending some of the side tabs on the cage out so they could help hold it in place. It seems to be secure enough as the hole in the dash is slightly angled back so the radio can't fall out on it's own. Overall it worked fine but I would have liked the kit to snap into the dash more securely.

Pros: Easy to fit to a variety of different vehicles and it looks good.

Cons: It did not lock into the dash securely on the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis I was installing it in.

Joseph J. from Bushkill, PA on 12/15/2013

2003 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This dash kit required me to modify it by breaking off the top frame and notching a slot at the bottom for routing of rear USB port and microphone jack to front of head unit in order to access them. This kit does not fit the F-150 dashes of the late 1990's and up to 2003 model years without having to greatly modify it in order for it to fit.

Pros: What pros, there are none!!

Cons: There are two ways to mount the head unit onto this dash kit. The use of the metal sleeve can easily bend when you attempt to mount it onto the dash kit bracket and the two plastic side brackets (most secure of the two) won't allow you to be able to mount the dash kit in the F-150 dash opening. Modification is a pain in the butt without the worry of breaking the whole darn thing.
