Worked well-once I figured it out-but be careful which tabs you cut off. Drawings and instructions are not that great. Some tabs were shown to remain but had to be cut off anyway in order for factory bezel to be reinstalled. (toyota matrix).

Pros: Worked fine once the proper tabs were cut off.

Cons: Better photos in the instructions would be better

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 8 year old JVC KD-HDR60 (single DIN) car stereo receiver crapped out recently. While replacing the receiver with a larger JVC KW-R920BTS (double DIN), I needed to use a new dash mounting kit (GMK-422). The install took 1 day and was relatively easy. The GMK-422 hard plastic mounting brackets fit several cars, requiring some of the mounting tabs to be removed prior to use in a specific car. I was a little hesitant to break off the unneeded mounting tabs, but several would obstruct access to the necessary mounting tabs. But the process of customizing these mounting brackets wasn't that difficult, and it works perfectly in mounting my car stereo receiver to my car's center dash. As I have been for the past 17 years or so, my most recent car audio purchase from Crutchfield was a very satisfying experience. Thanks again!

Some Alteration required

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I am satisfied with this kit, however there are a few drawbacks that you should be aware of. The first thing that was less than satisfactory was the instructions. They were not designed well at all. For example, the instructions will either say: "All vehicles except_____" or "Only or blank vehicles_____". The issue is they flip flop between these two categorical qualifiers and don't stick to one or the other. They should also bold and underline the ALL and ONLY. It is very important that you get the instructions right, because if you don't, you could destroy the kit. Which brings me to my next point. This kit requires physical alteration. It's not really custom made. You will need a DREMEL. The kit requires you to remove some tabs and connectors, except, they don't snap off or disconnect. OH NO. You must physically grind them off. Also even if you do grind off the ones indicated by the instructions, your mileage may vary. I couldn't fit my dash trim over the kit so I had to grind off a few more unused Tabs. It may sound like I was unsatisfied with the kit, but I am actually very happy with the end result. The kit holds my FH-720BT pioneer double Din perfectly, and looks professional from the outside. Although its plastic, I feel like the mounting hardware is enough to hold my Stereo which is lighter weight than the factory one. I recommend this kit, just don't expect to slap the pieces together and have your radio mounted in 2 minutes.

Pros: Finished product looks excellent Lightweight

Cons: Unclear instructions Needs dremel or other tool to remove unused parts of kit Plastic

Difficult to Work With but Looks Great in the Dash

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once we got it installed, it worked well. But the instructions were terrible. It was very unclear which tabs were supposed to be cut off and which needed to stay until I put it in my dash and saw which tabs were blocking. I also broke the faceplate trying to get the tabs off and had to glue it back together. I would highly recommend using a Dremel to cut off the tabs after trying several different methods.

Too many tabs to break off for my car. And they didn't break off easy. I accidentally broke the trim ring when I found a tab I had missed. It does not for back together well at all. Luckily, the break is at the bottom, so it isn't too noticeable.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product secures my head unit and completely fills the opening from my stock stereo. Once I figured out which tabs to remove, it was a very simple install. I had never used a spacer like this before, and initially the instructions were very confusing. It would have been simpler to instruct me to remove the stock stereo and leave behind the tabs that correspond to those on the stock stereo. The tabs were easy to remove with a wire side cutter.

Pros: Looks good, easy install

Cons: Slightly confusing instructions for a first-timer

installed in my 2006 Pontiac Vibe base model. I installed an aftermarket Android radio head unit. I did have to trim the bezel on the front to fit it only because of the size of the head unit which I think was abnormally sized. my only issue was the instructions. trimming off the extra pieces was not clear enough for my model it did list it but didn't show which pieces to trim.

you'll have to carfully trim the tabs that are not needed on this plastic adapter. Do a little trial and error with this and the radio and things will fit. Be careful with trimming so you dont cut too much or break the wrong section. USe a Dremel with a cutting blade and then sand the nub smooth.

Pros: Works fine

Cons: instructions are not good but its easy to figure out how to get it to work.

Looks clean after install. There are tabs that you need to remove to fit your individual vehicle. Manual is not accurate. Use common sense. The side panels do not fit in very well so you may have to force them to snap in place. Be careful when you do this since this is just a piece of plastic.

Pros: Looks good and is simple to install

Cons: pieces don't fit easily. Be careful when assembling the side panels.

Pros: Fits radio very well with supplied hardware and fit vehicle VERY well,Easy assembly.

After a struggle to get all the tabs removed without breaking the plastic product, I went to mount into my Impala and the four screw holes did not align with the three screw holes in the vehicle. This is a cheap piece of plastic. If possible I recommend finding a better mounting bracket, but this probably works for a lot of the other vehicles nicely. (other than the tab removal which is a pain)

Pros: Free

Cons: Tab removal is awful, started to mount into vehicle and mounting screw holes do not align.

Mounting kit is made to be used for many different vehicles, so a great deal of tab removal was necessary....instructions were confusing, but looking at how my old radio mounted, i was able to remove the unnecessary tabs pretty easily (with a dremel). Would have been stronger at the mounting points if it had closed tabs, but you're just keeping a radio in place not mounting an engine...overall good product...easy to use....

Pros: Easy to use...made to fit relatively easy

Cons: Flimsy plastic...open tabs...alot of tab removal (would have been hard without a dremel).

The dash kit fit perfectly, it was flush with the dash and made the receiver look as OEM as you can get. The dash kit will need to be modified, as it comes with all possible pegs attached, you will have to cut off those you don't need for your vehicle. This was easy enough to do.

Pros: Looks sharp, fits dash perfectly.

Cons: Requires modification, make sure to carefully read instructions so as not to cut the wrong pegs.

And as noted by several other reviewers, the instructions kinda suck. Very confusing. I can see why they give this kit away for free in a package with a new head unit. The instructions are the worst part about this kit, they are Very confusing and don't offer much help. I ended up being able to do the install without the instructions but someone with little knowledge of stereo installs might find this to be too hard and end up cutting off the wrong tabs. Just examine the parts in the kit, and examine how your stereo mounts in the dash and then cut off the unused tabs accordingly. The finished look of the kit though is very nice, and fits snug around the DDIN head units. The usable tabs line up well with the stock mounting points. I am glad I didn't have to pay extra for this kit.

Pros: Free with head unit purchase Looks great when finished Accurate mounting points

The instructions were not written well. It was not clear as to which tabs I should keep and which I should remove based on the instructions. i called Crutchfield and they made it clear to me. Once that issue was resolved, the installation was easy and everything worked perfectly. It allowed for a clean and beautiful installation of my new Clarion NX604 in a 2005 Chevy 2500HD.

Pros: Neat and clean look after installation, Supports the receiver securely.

This works but the instructions are horrible and you need a hacksaw to cut all the tabs off. I'd recommend getting one that is designed to work with your vehicle not for all GM vehicles. It looks ok but man it seems flimsy.

Pros: It looks ok and fills the space. It allows my unit to connect up to existing mount....eventually.

Cons: Not well constucted, too many tabs to cut off. Need a hacksaw for the work. Instructions are terrible and doesn't tell you which tabs to cut. It's a light grade plastic And can break easily.

The instructions are terrible!! They tell you to cut off tabs that shouldn't be cut off. I ended up going to Walmart and bought a Scosche kit that was almost identical and had very complete instructions. I am sure that this kit would have worked fine, but the directions were terrible and I ended up ruining the kit. Don't cut anything off until you look at it completely. It's free if you spend over $100 on a radio. That is the only thing good about it. If in doubt, go get the Scosche kit.

Pros: Free with a $100 radio

Terrible Instructions

Jason T from Georgia on 1/20/2015

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For a 2004 Silverado. The included instructions were complete and utter non-sense as most other reviewers have expressed. Once I decided to just toss the instructions, figuring out what needed to be done wasn't too bad by just holding the brackets and trim up to the hole and mounting locations. I cut the tabs and smoothed them down all with a Dremel which was not difficult at all and made all clean & smooth cuts. 2 stars just because the brackets do what they need to do, but lost the rest of the stars because the instructions are absolutely worthless and buyers are better off without them; whoever wrote them should be ashamed of themselves. Also - the bolts included were very short, not long enough for the JVC receiver I attached the bracket to. I had to use my own bolts.

Pros: Side brackets mount to trim easily, mounts to receiver as it's supposed to (with my own screws, not those included), mounts to dash easily.

Cons: * Confusing instructions that did not describe which tabs to remove, and how to follow each vehicle model also confusing. Don't look at these instructions, just throw them away and hold the trim and brackets up to the mounting location to figure out which ones should be removed. * Bolts included were not long enough for any normal installation.

This was pretty ridiculous. The instructions didn't show what tabs to break off, it was kind of a free-for-all. I thought maybe the instructions were made in Asia, but American International is actually made in Canada. I expected a Canada manual to have clear pictures. You pretty much have to see where your unit screws in when you take the old one out to ensure you don't have to buy another plastic radio holder. Better instructions would work wonders.

Pros: 1. It had an extra plastic piece for a Caddy. 2. I was able to use common sense on installation.

Cons: Instructions - more detail.

Not the easiest piece of plastic I have ever worked with. Cuts had to be made based on the make/model of car. There is no easy way to make these cuts. A flimsy piece of plastic. My dad got it done, but has the tools and work bench - a vise etc.. If you are just sitting in your car trying to hold and cut this piece with a pocket knife, well the outcome may not be one you like. After all was said and done, it fit the stereo as it should, but this one piece doubled the entire installation process in regard to time spent on the project.

Like other reviewers, I found the directions to be utterly confusing. The instructions clearly said to cut off all side tabs for my application, however my common sense looking at the open hole said that didn't seem right. I figured out what seemed right and then called tech support to confirm. Poor, poor, poor directions. And then after that, I had to cut off, file, and sand 8-10 tabs (extra steps because I'm a little OCD about things being done right)....not plug and play by any means.

Pros: Will fit anything from a 1929 Packard and later...ok, not literally

Dash Kit Works Great, Instructions Awful

1997 Buick Skylark
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit looks great once assembled and installed, and the plastic seems sturdy enough to handle the job long term. If these were the only things that were to be judged, this would be a 5-star review. The problem is that the directions that were included with the kit were awful and misleading. Perhaps someone noticed this, because the directions that are available for this same product on the Crutchfield website have been altered to reflect clearer instructions. But even the online instructions are a bit unclear. For example, you have to figure out for yourself what is the ISO trim ring (the ring that goes around the face of the head unit). Plus the directions don't really show all angles of the bracket, which would have been nicer. I used this kit to install a new head unit in a 1997 Buick Skylark. Once I figured out what to do, cutting off all of the unneeded tabs was a fairly simple process. You can score and snap off tabs that you don't need using a sharp blade, a small hack saw, a Dremel-type tool, or whatever works for you. The cutting off part doesn't have to be pretty; everything except the front ISO trim ring will be hidden by the final install. After cutting off the unneeded tabs, snap the side brackets onto the ISO trim ring. Then attach to your head unit using screws.

Pros: Looks great! Plastic is sturdy. Was a perfect fit once all unneeded tabs were removed. Final install looks professional.

Cons: Printed directions were terrible. Directions available online were better.

This kit tries to fit into too many applications. The instructions were hard to decipher for my vehicle and I ended up having to remove more tabs that the instructions told me too for my vehicle. I ended up figuring it out by doing multiple test fits under it went in right. Breaking off the extra tabs was not easy either, I ended up using a Dremel to be sure I got a clean cut and didn't break the kit. I also had to carve out a bit of plastic to fit the screws through to the receiver. However, once I figured out what worked, the receiver was held in place securely into the kit and then the truck.

k from Sacramento, CA on 10/3/2014

2005 Chevrolet Tahoe
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product itself worked just fine, once you figure it out. The reason I gave 3 Stars is simply because of the instructions. Turned what should have been a 1 hour deck install to 3 hours, just because you have no idea which section actually applies to your vehicle, and are paranoid you're going to clip the wrong tabs off. Obviously they are trying to make this product fit every vehicle manufactured since 1932, but the instructions don't live up to that goal - a blind monkey could have done a better job. "Cut all the tabs OFF". "No, don't cut all the tabs off". "Cut the tabs off the side brackets NOT shown above" - what?! Did the graphic artist take the day off when that section was written? You're better off just looking at the bracket and face pieces, seeing what mounting holes your have on your dash, and then clipping off what doesn't belong.

Pros: Does what it supposed to do; deck doesn't rattle around.

Cons: Instructions are severely in need of re-writing, with graphics that more clearly show what tabs are to be cut. Or just make bracket kits for each Make of vehicle, with instructions that are clear, rather than trying to match every vehicle on the planet with one bracket kit.

I wanted to give it 5 Stars but one of the side pieces wouldn't clip on properly and I have to ding the review for that. One side clipped on, but the other side wasn't molded properly and I couldn't get it to clip in place. I finally gave up and just put it in with it bulging a little. You can't see it once the dash is in place covering it and it looks really nice. It looks like a pro did the installation and I'm proud of how it all came out. For free(ish) I really can't complain.

Pros: 1. It looks really nice once installed. 2. It mounted perfectly with no adjustment hassles at all. 3. The plastic is very sturdy.

Cons: It's hard to remove the unused mounting plates. Although that's a good thing, I kind of deformed the piece of plastic I needed when I cut the unused parts off. So when you do this, score it first with a Stanley knife on both sides then use some heavy wire cutters to cut along the score marks. That's what I did, or you could use a Dremel cutting tool.

Put this into a 2003 Avalanche. Useless instructions can be replaced by: The two side mounts are not the same. Look at your factory stereo and match up the plastic tabs with the ones on your stereo. Cut off all the other tabs. Snap the sides into the rectangular cover piece(takes a bit of a push to get the two side tabs into their slots but should lock in straight) and mount to your new stereo (I was able to get three screws per side to fit). The Crutchfield notes on here state that the back metal mount would have to be cut out of my truck to put a KW-V200BT but I decided to see how close it really was. It was tight but all three screws tightened down and the factory trim went back on so that it looks extremely nice.

The confusion with breaking off tabs was not nearly as bad as I've ready here. You simply need to end up with the same mounting tab locations that your stock unit had. You literally have a map of the necessary tabs in your possession when you take the old head unit out, so you need not bother with the instructions if you find them confusing.

Pros: Easy to use. Free with my head unit.

Cons:

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Short story - it does work with a JVC double-DIN deck in a 2004 Silverado 1500. The long story - make sure you have a rotary tool or some other cut-off tool to fabricate this bracket for your particular vehicle. "Universal" means this is basically raw material that the user must modify to fit their vehicle. It ships with mounting tabs for every vehicle it fits, and you have to cut off the tabs that interfere with your fit. It is made of plastic so make sure your don't ruin the brackets taking off the unnecessary tabs. I used a small rotary tool (name brand) with a cut-off wheel. Also, I agree completely with Bruce from Charlotte, the instructions are useless, follow his advice.

Pros: It works and looks nice when done.

Cons: Be prepared to spend some time fabricating and the instructions are crazy.

Instructions are abhorrent! Absolutely garbage and very difficult to follow. They read like a "choose your own adventure" book in a two page pamphlet except that they never get you to the end. Disgustingly vague and practically useless. I am now forced to purchase an entirely new bracket because whoever wrote these installation instructions couldn't keep them straight.

Cons: Instructions do more harm than good.

A lot of tabs to break off. Had to really study the instructions to make sure and not screw it up. The face plate was kind of a tight fit and bows out a little when installed, but you can't tell when the vehicle dash trim is installed. I hope the plastic holds up over time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter worked fine for installing a new head unit into our 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. As expected, it's just a big piece of plastic with tabs in the right spot to bolt to the OEM mounting holes. Where I think it could be improved is either a more specific product offering for each model of car, or a better way to customize it. As it is you get somewhat cryptic instructions that tell you to remove certain tabs depending on what model car you have. What you aren't told is how best to accomplish that, and the tabs aren't scored or otherwise marked in a way make them easy to remove (which kind of makes sense since that would also necessarily weaken them, which is not what you want for the tabs you keep). I ended up using wire snippers to remove the unwanted tabs, and it was difficult and the result a bit ugly. But it did work.

Pros: Does the job

Cons: Tabs are hard to remove cleanly, instructions are a bit cryptic

I've installed a few stereos with kits from Crutchfield, all without issue, however, this kit was a bit disappointing! So, this product, technically works for my car, however...I literally did not follow the instructions... they were too confusing! On one page, it would say to break off certain tabs if your vehicle was not this certain type, then you'd go to the next page and their would a diagram that looked almost like a side view, and we should "not remove" other tabs if your vehicle was on this new list. In the end, I had to put the pieces together, do what I will call a "visual fit" of the bracket, then break off all the tabs based on that... Like I said, it technically works, but I would almost recommend not following the instructions on this one!

Pros: It will fit... there are about 20 different car models this bracket will fit, and it certainly worked for my car

Cons: The instructions were confusing and a bit hard to follow.

Works but instructions really sketchy. This thing apparently is cleverly designed to mount every radio made into any car ever made. You have to figure out which tabs you need and which you don't. Overall, not a bad product, and better in quality than the brittle Metra kits I've used in the past. The tabs that are meant to be broken off to customize the kit for different vehicles could be easier to remove (perhaps score them better), and the instructions provided could use a lot of improvement. For example, this kit instructs one to break off the tabs "as shown" in the illustration, but the illustration isn't marked at all, it just shows the part, unaltered and unmarked. An experienced installer won't have too much trouble (or perhaps none at all... I didn't) figuring out what to remove to make it work, but I can see where a novice/beginner might get tripped up and potentially remove something that is necessary for the installation.

Pros: Sturdy, good fit, overall good quality, and as always, provided free by Crutchfield with the purchase of most head units, one of the many reasons I continue to buy from them!

Cons: Poorly written/marked instructions

Instructions could be a bit clearer since you are required to cut and remove tabs on the plastic. Very sold mount once you get it in. It takes a fair amt of force to snap the front on to the sides and I was worried about it snapping, but it held up!

Pros: Quick and sturdy

Cons: Instructions could use some fine tuning, but after you stare at it for a while and get up the nerve to start cutting tabs off, it's ok. Several places the instructions say "remove all tabs except models not listed above" ...and there are no models listed above at all

Confusing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! This is the most confusing "in-dash receiver kit" I have worked with. I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier and it was very hard to figure which tabs to keep and which to break off. The manufacturers instructions were extremely confusing!! This kit is used for several vehicles and has way too many instructions. Couldn't easily find my vehicle in the jumble.

Pros: Needed for a custom fit.

Cons: Hard to follow instructions.

The instruction manual that comes with this product is very bad. The pieces come with a large number of extra tabs to fit many vehicles. The instructions do not do a very good job of explaining which ones to remove! Also, the instructions do not do a very good job of showing how the side pieces connect to the front plate.

Pros: It worked

Cons: Instructions very poor. Took a lot of trial and error.

This kit was a little confusing at first. After only a few minutes I was able to snap it together and orient it by comparing it to the factory radio. Then used a pair of side cutters to remove the unnecessary parts. In the end it holds the new unit securely. Finished fit could have been better, I may shim it out with a few washers to eliminate the slight gap between it and the trim.

Pros: Holds unit securely. Matches interior of my truck nicely.

Cons: Poor/no instruction. Fit could be better.

This mounting assembly requires a little thought and a careful dry fit before modifying it to fit your car... I suggest holding the parts in place in the dash and verify exactly which tabs are to be removed. I used a Dremel rotary tool to grind the tabs off for a perfect fit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't even bother with the instructions, throw them right in the trash. Not only are they confusing, they use poor grammar, sentence structure and make no sense at all. Used this kit on a 2004 Chevy Colorado and JVC head unit. Upon unpacking the bracked, it seemed a little flimsy, but is adequate for a double din head unit. I went straight to the instructions and couldn't understand which tabs to cut, which to keep, and which parts to use. I read them again, and again, and again, then had my family also read them and we still didn't know what we needed to do. I tossed them out. I ended up only using the side brackets by taking them out to the vehicle and figuring out how it could fit. Then, when I went to actually mount the side brackets to the head unit, the mounting slots did not line up with the mount screws on the head unit. I had to open up the bracket mounting slot a bit with a utility knife to get it to fit straight and tight. But in the end, it worked...which is why I gave it 2 stars.

Pros: Inexpensive Ultimately worked in mounting double din head unit

Cons: Instructions useless. Took me about 2 hours to figure out how to use the bracket by trial and error

Pros: Free

Cons: Cheap plastic, parts fit together poorly, and directions are confusing.

Quite frankly I became so frustrated at all the tabs I had to saw off or cut off. very flimsy and the primary tabs that had to come off if you don't get them "EXACTLY" flat it creates an issue. The outer trim piece did not work with the radio and the trim piece so I just disgarded the JVC trim ring and used the Trim ring that came with this kit. Again, it was free and included with the purchase of the radio and perhaps it needed all these cuttings since it was going into a 2003 GMC 2500 HD crew cab. Perhaps all those tabs don't need to be eliminated for other makes and models.

Pros: none

Cons: poorly constructed; too many tabs having to be cut off; the trim ring didn't work the jvc trim ring and used this cheap one that came with the kit.

Free with purchase of my JVC unit for my 2005 GMC Sierra SLT. I never managed to get the front panel face plate to connect as it should. In my opinion a one fit receiver kit would have made for a much better fit. This particular one has excessive parts needing to be connected. I could not get the kit to fully get flush with the rubber guide pens. I did manage to get the unit installed. Though it covers a wide range of vehicles the instructions I think are poorly written, and hard to follow. The results where somewhat of a success. I will be purchasing another model thats one whole unit. This is my 3rd unit and receiver kit and this one by far is the worst. It was free and I am thankful but the final results I'm not happy with.

Pros: None.

Cons: To many parts that didn't match up correctly. Could not get fully flush with guide pens and screw holes.

Mike from Houston TX on 4/13/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation kit was a perfect fit in my 2003 Avalanche. As stated in some reviews, the instructions are terrible. Probably the worst I have seen and that is the reason I did not give the rating 5 stars. But, its really not that hard to figure out. Simply remove your old head unit and line up the mounting bracket tabs that you need and remove all others. Also, when removing the tabs, simply take a utility blade and score the bottom of the tab two or three times right at the base with moderate pressure (be careful and take your time so you dont slip and cut yourself), Tab will break off easily with a pair of pliers.

Pros: Perfect fit and easy to install once you figure it out. I had mine installed in about 30 minutes.

Cons: Instructions for the mounting bracket kit are horrible. With the exception of a couple of steps the remainder of the instructions is almost incomprehesible. Read my review above and it will tell you all you need to know because the biggest concern is which mounting tabs to remove for your particular vehicle.

The biggest issue I had was the instructions. It says to remove the taps not shown and the picture shows all the taps attached. What is trying to say, in an unclear way, is that the instructions are broken down into different categories based on your vehicle; groups A, B, C, D. On the plastic the taps have corresponding letters next to them, so if your vehicle is in group A then you remove all the the other tabs B, C, D. Once I figured out this out, installation was a breeze.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was free with my purchase but I'll exclude that from my bias. This product was extremely universal, meaning that it covers many different makes and models of vehicles. The instructions, specifically to my make and model, are non-existent. I had to use my own logic and trial and error to determine which of the removable tabs had to be detached. This trial and error process was by far the longest step in installing my head unit. The tabs that you have to remove do not have a relief or cut line in them; you can not simply shear or break them off easily. I had to cut them off with shears and then grind down the remaining boss of the tab. After the initial fitment issues, the adapter fits the cutout of the dash adequately.

Pros: A very universal kit; many different makes and models covered.

Cons: A very universal kit; will take further refinement and customization to install correctly.

The product was free from Crutchfield, so no complaints there. It was very cheaply built and way too "universal." The instructions might as well have never been included because they were absolutely useless. Eventually I figured out that all of the clips had to be broken off to make the unit fit. I used this kit to mount a Pioneer AVH-P8400BH in my 2004 Chevy Avalanche. The instructions are very hard to follow depending on the vehicle application and is not clear on all the tabs needed to be removed. Being plastic, It doesn't hold up well when tight mounting an installation, as the mounting tabs will spread apart as opposed to the original metal mounting bracket. The screws seemed very short, but may be a requirement in universal applications. Be careful not to torque them down too much, as you might strip out the hole, as I did in one instance.

Pros: Mounts the unit.

Cons: Cheap poor quality plastic and unclear instructions for unique installations--too broad coverages.

Not bad for a freebie. But, if you don't have a Dremel, other some way to quickly cut the extra plastic tabs off, this make take you a long time to install. Just be prepared to do a lot of trimming. Keep your factory stereo close by for reference, it will help you to know when you are getting close. Test fit a few times before tightening everything up for the final installation. Oh, also had to take the metal sleeve and mounting hardware off the aftermarket stereo... this was not in the instructions I got.

Pros: Once installed correctly, it looks and works fine.

Cons: Lots of time/effort spent in modifying to get the proper fit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have done several stereo installs, and have always appreciated Crutchfield supplying the free in-dash kits, but this one was disappointing. As others have said, the instructions are not clear. For my '03 Tahoe, they said the removal of just a couple tabs was that was necessary. Once you get into your dash and pull out the old stereo, it immediately becomes apparent that this is not so. I had to remove EVERY tab except the 3 for the screws on the sides. Removal of these tabs is a huge pain. Their not scored or notched for easy breaking. I had to find a saw small enough to fit in the gaps to cut them off. A dremel would be ideal, but since I don't own one, I had to resort to the saw on my Leatherman. I spent an hour plus, getting this dash kit ready. No dash kit should take more than 10 minutes of your time. Bleh... dissapointed that Crutchfield is using this item.

Pros: Does the job

Cons: Too much modification needed for a 'vehicle specific' dash kit.

TERRIBLE INSTRUCTIONS!!!! When you get past the instructions it works okay. Most of the tabs are required to be cut out to make it fit. When side brackets snap together into the face plate with a "click", then you've arrived; simply run screws through the side and into the stereo head unit and it fits pretty secure. Bracket provides no back support, but in my application I had to cut out the back plastic area around the OEM stereo; I cut it close enough that it provided some structural support. If I was to do it all over again, I'd pay for an install kit made of metal that was not universal, and supported securely with the 3 screws in the dash. Wasted an hour figuring this one out but it worked okay in the end.

Pros: Universal and free

Cons: TERRIBLE INSTRUCTIONS, no back support for unit

This was apparently made for every GM vehicle ever produced. The instructions are brutal. I had to figure out how to break tabs off the kit via trial and error. Given the way the truck (an 06 sierra) was that basically meant reassembling almost everything. It took WAY longer to do than it should have. I ended up with an ok outcome, so maybe I should have given it 2 stars, but it is pretty wretched for this vehicle. I would have rather paid for an adapter that was more suited to this vehicle than used this "free" one. The last one of these I did (maybe 5 years ago?), also in a GM vehicle, was not like this.

Pros: it ended up looking ok (after hours of install time, trial/error, etc)

Cons: Took forever to install due to the number of tabs (options) that had to be broken off. That was pretty stressful because you snap the wrong tab off and you are screwed.

Huge PAIN!

Jesse D from Lincoln, NE on 1/4/2013

The instruction were HORRIBLE. Of the 18 mounting tabs, I had to cut off all but two and the instructions said nothing about having to remove about 8 of those. Once I cut all the unneeded tabs off, mounting was easy. I feel these mounting brackets should be a little less general and more vehicle specific. This mount works but it will give you a headache in the process.

Pros: eventually worked

Cons: have to cut 90% of the bracket off to even install, instructions are HORRIBLE and do not help at all

Cons: Had to figure out what parts to use without good instructions. Screws used were a little tall on the screw head and I had to use a little force to get the radio in place instead of it just sliding in. Flatter screws would have been better and instructions on which parts to use or discard.

The instructions were telling me I needed to use parts that didn't really fit and I didn't think were necessary. You have to do a lot of trimming too, be ready for it. .

Pros: works fine and does its job, just difficult to get it done

The bracket itself had A LOT of extra tabs that I had to trim off to fit my 2005 Chevy Silverado. As well, some of the tabs you must cut as flush as possible or the "faceplate" will not lock in and seat properly (had to make a few stabs at it). As well, the instructions provided me with no help whatsoever! Chuck from Philadelphia, PA on 10/6/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall the kit is fine. It's plastic, which means the overall thickness of each dimension will be thicker than the stock metal bracket, but that's not a problem really. It just requires some extra finessing to get it in the dash. If you are planning on using this in a 2001 Olds Intrigue, be aware that the bracket will not fit if you don't customize it a bit. It fits fine in the slot for the radio after hookup, but the front fascia of the dash will not go back on unless you file down a portion of the upper left corner of the bracket. You also need to file a very small portion of the mounting clip attachment point on the inside of the fascia piece as well. Otherwise the front piece won't "click" in to place. Once I realized that it was very easy. But I agree with other reviewers--the instructions might as well not be there. You should call Crutchfield and have them talk you through it for your car.

Pros: Fits the radio.

Cons: Because it's trying to be a "universal" bracket, it has extra attachment points that need to be removed to get it to fit. Also, it needs to be trimmed to allow for reattachment of the front fascia that covers the whole mid-section of the dash. As others have said, the instructions are useless. Call Crutchfield and have them talk you through what you need to do for your car. It would be better if it were metal and not try to be universal.

It works, but the convoluted instructions might as well be a spitwad. Ended up calling tech support and was disappointed with the tech's support (first time ever with Crutchfield), but found out that with using this bracket, you have to take off the mounting sleeve and factory trim ring from the head unit and screw the bracket directly to the head unit. You'll need the longer screws to make it work. I did not have to do any cutting on the truck itself to get the stereo to fit, that was a plus, but the only plus to this kit. After a little adjusting, it worked well, but I spent longer trimming the extra tabs and shaving plastic burrs on this than I did the wiring and other installation of this stereo. Quality was well below what I expect from Crutchfield.

The mounting kit worked fine, but was kind of a pain to prepare. This kit is used for so many different vehicles, so I had to remove close to a dozen plastic tabs that were not needed for my application. Several of these had to be sawed off with a small hacksaw due to their thickness. It would be nice of the vehicle applications were narrowed down so there wasn't so much up front prep work on the mount. Also, the instructions weren't very clear. They did not indicate that I needed to remove the radio sleeve, trim panel and other parts before installing the mount. Had to call the customer service line to figure that one out, but that's why they are there and they are awesome. In the end, the mount worked perfectly and the radio looks great.

This will get the job done and I don't know if there are any better ones out there to choose instead, but the tolerances are too loose. I had to spend a fare amount of time trying to evenly distribute the gap between it and the stereo faceplate. Luckily there's no light from behind the stereo or you would see a big glowing halo around the sides of the stereo. The instructions are pretty disorganized in their attempt to describe how to make this universal adapter mate up to so many different cars. Overall, it will get the job done, but team that put it together doesn't really have something to be proud of.

Pros: It works. Good texture. Nice thick plastic.

Cons: You have to spend a lot of time doing a very artistic job with an exacto knife to cut out the plastic rib which provides separation between the two halves of the double DIN space if you have a full double DIN stereo. Lame instructions. Too big an opening for the stereo.

Installed in a 04 Trailblazer Ext. Like most dash kits, this kit had numerous plastic tabs, etc. that had to be cut off, then filed, or sanded flush to fit my vehicle. I used a small back saw and a flat file. You could use a small coping saw or hacksaw also. If you have a lot of control, you could use a dremel type tool, but if you miss just a little with it, the results could be bad. It looks and works great when installed, I took away one star because the directions are not clear at all. Like a few other reviews mentioned, the key is to compare the old units mounting, attachment, etc. to your new deck and "dry" fit the kit before you start cutting away. Once I did that, I was able to see what the horrible directions meant.

Pros: Looks good when installed and fits my vehicle perfectly. No additional mods were necessary when installing a Pioneer AVH-P3400BH.

This install kit did come free with my head unit, however not a very well designed piece. There are too many extra tabs on the mounting bracket ( that's what i meant by " too universal " ). If you don't read and follow the directions carefully, I could see where it would get very confusing. I was able to trim off the uneeded mounting tabs as suggested with an air cut-off tool. Had to be very careful not to damage the rest of the mounting kit while trimming.

The bad: This thing has tabs for every GM car since about 1995, and you have to cut them all off with shears before it fits. And god help you if you cut the wrong one off. It's just injection-molded plastic, guys, would it be too much to ask to get a bit more vehicle-specific? Three stars because it was free and it worked in the end.

As stated in other reviews, the directions are poor. I had no problems at all by doing the following. First, read through reviews for an idea of what the problems were. Second, read the instructions. Even if they are bad, they are some help. Third, take the old unit out of the car and lay it out next to the new unit, reciever kit and instructions. I found at that point, all of the pieces of the puzzle fit together and it was fairly obvioius what plastic tabs had to be cut off and how it needed to be mounted. Instructions leave a lot to be desired. I read the other reviews first and was leery so I got the stock radio out and lined the brackets up in the truck first before breaking any tabs off. Turns out the instructions were close on that but not fully understood until everything was pre-staged. I used an air dremel and a flat file on the broken tab areas and I also had to mark and widen the side bracket holes to fit the holes in my double-din JVC KWR500. The install was on my wife's 2006 Avalanche and unlike most other reviews, this one looks top-shelf! There is a small gap on the bottom but it is almost unnoticeable to me and nobody else will spot it. I knew it was going to be on the top or the bottom before I modified so when I widened the side bracket holes I took that into consideration and it worked out fine. Keep in mind that the JVC protrudes out at the front and covers any of the blemishes in the mounting ring and your unit may not cover this up.

This is definitely NOT a kit! It is a generic plastic frame, poorly designed and layed out for far too many possible scenarios. A double din frame that requires removal of a center piece that if done incorrectly, or with little patience, will definitely destroy the look and feel of the entire installation of a radio. The multitude of tabs that need to be removed, by prying, breaking, sawing etc is a very big detractor. It would be better to have a piece specifically made for double din units, with fewer side tabs and extraneous junk pieces.

Pros: Does what it should

Cons: Poor instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions were confusing and the diagrams could show better detail.I was frustrated by the instructions, so I called the Crutchfield Techs and after just a few minutes had everything figured out.So take your time and if there are problems just call tech support!

Pros: It does look good when you figure out what to do.Crutchfield has some of the best tech support.

Cons: Plastic pieces did not snap together easily And the instructions were confusing.

Must have previous experience with this one!!
