Virtual surround sound from a hideaway system

Do you use your PC to watch DVDs and play games? Get more from their surround soundtracks with the Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system. Exclusive Bose processing creates a rich, enveloping soundfield around your desk using just two compact speakers and an Acoustimass® module. The system plugs into your PC through any USB port, making setup a breeze.

And how does this system deliver wraparound audio from just two compact speakers and a bass module? Bose's TrueSpace® digital surround processing circuitry is the answer. It creates virtual surround sound from speakers positioned no further apart than the width of your computer monitor. You'll hear crisp dialogue and engaging surround effects from your favorite movies and games.

Quick and simple setup

Setting up a conventional surround speaker system for your PC takes time, effort, and some computer savvy, too. Bose has taken the work out of adding high-quality computer speakers — simply connect the Acoustimass® module to your PC's USB port, hook up the speakers, and plug in the power cord. Your computer will detect the system, and you're ready to start enjoying better sound.

Control at your fingertips

The Companion® 5 system also includes an easy-to-use control pod. It houses the volume control as well as a headphone jack and an auxiliary input for an iPod® or other MP3 player. The separate control pod means you can place the speakers out of the way and still have easy access to the system's volume control and connections for additional gear.

Features

Satellite Speakers: Each satellite uses dual 2" long-throw, wide-range drivers, mounted in an angled array, for lifelike, spacious sound. The satellites, which are permanently attached to their 6" stands, are magnetically shielded to prevent interference with a CRT-type monitor.

TrueSpace: The proprietary TrueSpace surround digital processing circuitry creates an enveloping sound environment from just two visible speakers. The system is designed for sitting at the computer. TrueSpace makes your music, games, movies, and other 5.1-channel decoded material sound like it's coming from a 5-speaker system.

Acoustimass Module: The Acoustimass Module delivers clean, deep low frequencies. The module can be hidden almost anywhere in the listening area and allows for small, elegant speakers without sacrificing performance. You can adjust the amount of bass output with the rotary Bass Compensation dial on the back of the bass module.

Control Pod: The multi-function pod houses volume control, a headphone jack, and a connection for a second audio source such as an MP3 player. Its touch-sensitive top lets you quickly mute the speakers, while the LED Mode Indicator shows you the status of the system: Active (green), Muted (amber), or Standby (red). The high-friction rubberized base prevents the control pod from moving around on your desk. Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 2.435
  • Height: 1.121"
  • Cable Length: 7.75'

Active Equalization: The active equalization electronically tunes the frequency response, enabling outstanding audio performance for improved speech intelligibility.

Compression Circuitry: The system's compression circuitry lets you enjoy clear, undistorted sound, even at high volumes.

USB/Analog Inputs: The Companion 5 connects to your computer via a single USB connection. No special software, soundcard, adapters, or additional wiring is needed. An analog 3.5mm mini-jack input is available on the control pod for connecting a second audio source.

Computer Setup: Using a USB port, the Companion 5 bypasses the computer's soundcard. Bose recommends setting your computer's audio output to 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers (PC) or Multichannel (Mac).

Computer System Recommendation: For best performance, your computer should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • 1 GHz minimum, Pentium processor or equivalent
  • 256 MB RAM minimum
  • USB 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, or XP, and Mac OS X 10.4 or later
  • A compatible 5.1-channel surround sound decoder residing on your computer
Inputs and Outputs

  • To Computer: USB Type B jack that connects to the computer via USB cable

Q
Can I mount the satellites to a wall?
paul  Mar 12, 2017
6 answers
A
No , not easily. You would have to unscrew and remove the stand and there would be a problem mounting there speaker to the wall as there is no hook or apparatus to hold the speaker in place.
fred  Mar 26, 2017
A
They come mounted on stands.but you can remove the stand. It is mounter with one screw. You could put the screw back in and possibly hang it that way or use a piece of wire. But it doesn't come with wall mounting accessories. You will have to get a little inventive.
billy  Mar 13, 2017
A
No don't mount to the wall. In my opinion they are best suited for use on the desktop wherever you use your computer.
robert m  Mar 13, 2017
A
I don't believe so as they come mounted on stands. I do not see any type of mounting brackets on the back.
phillip  Mar 13, 2017
A
no the design is for table mount
willie  Mar 13, 2017
A
Yes you can. You might consider a wire cover that can be painted unless the speaker wires go through the wall

Q
Is there a way to hook this up to a TV?
charles  Dec 04, 2016

A
This is a Christmas gift and hasn't been opened yet so I am not sure if you can hook it up, but If your TV has an audio out port you should be able to hook them up with no problem. You may have to buy some kind of adapter cable but you may be able to get by with what you already have. If the bose set only has 1 imput slot you will to change from one source to another. or of you just want it for your TV you won't have to change it out.. If you don't find out I can e-mail you when it gets out of the box and I can see what hook up's it has in the back
billy  Dec 05, 2016
A
I have not done it, but if your tv has an 1/8" jack I don't see why you couldn't. It does not have a remote.
dennis  Dec 05, 2016
A
There's a 3.5 mm aux input on the controller. If your TV has an audio output, you should be able to connect your TV. The sound of this speaker system is awesome.

Q
I have this system and I think the cord that goes from my computer tower to the Bose system is bad. Where can I get a replacement cord?
charles  Dec 07, 2015

A
It looks like the connection from the computer to the speakers is a standard USB connection. You can find USB cables on our website here: http://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/usb_cable.html

I have a iMac and it was able to detect the speakers via the USB connection without any problems. Very easy and no setup was even needed on the Mac.

The Bose speakers for my PC are superb! I love the sound!
harvey  Dec 03, 2015
Q
what is the USB for and there is no 3.5 cord?
jerry  Dec 03, 2015
1 answer
A
The USB input can be used to bypass your computer's sound card for better performance. There is a 3.5 Mini-jack input, but it does not come with one of the cables. We do sell them though, and you can find one here: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_142I335/Scosche-I335-Mini-Stereo-Cable.html

Q
I'm wondering if this system can be used with an I-pod touch 5 with a DAC hooked up to it?
charles  Apr 08, 2014
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This unit offers an analog 3.5mm input and if the customer has an external iPod DAC then they can certainly use the analog input on this product for connection. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
