Clarion CX305

Our take on the Clarion CX201

You've got room for a double-DIN receiver, but no desire to spring for in-dash DVD. Fill that dash real estate with Clarion's sharp CX201 CD receiver, and you'll enjoy an easy-to-see 2-line display along with fantastic Clarion sound quality.

You've got room for a double-DIN receiver, but no desire to spring for in-dash DVD. Fill that dash real estate with Clarion's sharp CX201 CD receiver, and you'll enjoy an easy-to-see 2-line display along with fantastic Clarion sound quality.

Plug in your iPod® or iPhone®
When you plug in your player to the receiver's USB slot, you can control your iPod with the large, central control knob, plus view song info as it scrolls across the two-line display. You'll enjoy great sound quality — much better than plugging into an auxiliary input — and your player stays charged while you drive.

Enjoy great sound
You'll be impressed by the clean power from this receiver's built-in amplifier, and Clarion's unique bass boost will add some punch to your sound without getting muddy. The 3-band parametric equalizer is a big jump over the simple tone controls found on most factory radios, giving you pinpoint control over the highs, mids, and lows.

You'll find the front auxiliary input convenient for plugging in a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or any other portable audio player. This receiver will play your store-bought and recordable CDs, plus any discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. Two sets of preamp outputs give you extra control over your amps and subs — you can switch the rear output to subwoofer mode and use the level control for on-the-fly changes. A built-in low-pass filter lets you control the character of your bass, while a high-pass filter trims the extreme low bass out of your front and rear speakers so they play more efficiently.

Ready to add on
You can add an HD Radio tuner to dial in the great sound quality and expanded programming choices offered by participating AM/FM stations. The CX201 also lets you tap into SIRIUS satellite radio by adding the SCC1 tuner — unlike most receivers, it plugs in directly without a brand-specific adapter cable, so that'll save you some money. Of course, a subscription is required to hear satellite radio programming.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    amazing sound quality

    manjunath from india on 4/10/2014

I was using Sony XAV63 in my i20 almost for a year, the sound system was good but in terms of clarity it is nowhere close to clarion. It took some time to install it, slightly longer for understanding the settings, once that is done be prepared for being amazed by the sound quality. The clarity is simply amazing. Highly recommended for those who want some good sound quality music system.

Pros: Sound quality, clarity, looks, build quality,

Cons: Display is slightly weak in direct sunlight, settings are slightly difficult, volume is only upto 32,

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the Clarion CX501 a few years back and was so impressed, I purchased the CX201 for my friend's Honda CRV. With provided instructions, removal of the old unit was very easy. I did have to grind off (using a Dremel sanding drum) 2 small nibs on the inside of the factory side brackets to allow flush installation on the replacement unit but this was very quick and easy to do. The Clarion CX201 is a solid, full-featured replacement for almost any vehicle needing a double-dim head unit. Sound quality is top notch, even with factory speakers but will really shine with upgraded cones matched up with Crutchfields expert help. Radio pulls in stations very well, USB and Ipod AUX input read perfectly and offer easy access to all files. Options like HD radio or Bluetooth are easy to add if needed. I didn't experience any issues with the display as other have mentioned, if you follow the included directions for wiring, there are 2 ways for the display to connect and if the dimmer is the one you use, make sure the dimmer control in your vehicle is turned up all the way or just use the standard illumination connection for constant power to the display. Remember, a quick call to one of Crutchfields professional service technicians will assist you with any questions or issues you may have, they want you to be happy with your purchase. If you are looking for a great quality do-it-all unit for a fantastic price, the Clarion CX201 should be on the top of your list.

Pros: Price, sound quality, features, good looks and quality brand name.

Cons: Auto install nanobots not included in package yet, give them a few more years..

    Pros: All attributes very good

Cons: Wish one on den would be a little bit brighter .

    display is unreadable in daylight

TomH from Appleton, WI on 12/17/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We returned the unit because in the Subaru Forester, and others have trouble reading the display in daylight in their vehicles as well, because the display almost totally washes out in the day time. At night, the display fine. The sound seemed muddy, too, and since this was for my wife and she called me in tears because she couldn't read the display, we returned the unit for a JVC, with which we are very happy. My spouse mainly uses the radio in satellite function and reads the station, category, artist, and song title, so the display problem was a deal breaker. Cannot recommend the Clarion model. BTW, the return was hassle free and for this reason alone -- they really mean satisfaction guaranteed -- the buying experience at Crutchfield is top rate.

Pros: Nice feature package for the price

Cons: display is unreadable in daylight in many vehicles

    2006 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great radio. The installation instructions could be a little clearer but nothing I couldn't handle. The (2) side filler pieces worked great but I didn't even use the thin trim piece so there is a little gap that you can even notice. I bought it mainly for the USB which works good. I would have liked the "random" feature to work through the entire USB instead of just per folder. One other thing I should have done was fork over the couple of extra bucks and bought the CX501, the CX201 only has blue lights which look great except when its dark out it is really distracting with my green instrument panel. Other than that a very nice radio.

Pros: Pretty easy to install. looks great. USB port

Cons: only one color and the "random" feature operation could be better.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this head unit in my 2009 Corolla and am happy I did. Complaints I 'had read about the poor antenna in the Corolla have proven false. This stereo is picking up a multitude of FM stations were not available with the factory radio. Wish I had put it in two years ago.

Pros: Easy to set up your preferences in sound control. FM reception is excellent- stations are very clear with no fade. Price is good and quality seems to be great.

Cons: Display is 'very difficult to read in daylight, and yes, I connected the illumination wire correctly. Once I complete all my sound 'settings and enter my preset stations, the poor display won't be a factor since I'm not one to change settings every time a new song comes on.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this radio into a 2003 Silverado. A big improvement over the factory radio. I find the display very difficult to read in the daylight. I aso find the large volume control knob not as cool as I thought when I first saw a picture of the radio. It seems to take more effort to raise and lower the voume when compared to the factory small volume control knob. I wish I had purchased a higher end radio. Installation kit provided by Crutchfield worked great, but took some time to figure out whch parts of the adapter to remove to fit this radio.

    Pros: Good sound quality.

Cons: DIsplay hard to read in daylight.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Clarion head unit is a great replacement for the factory head unit in my 2004 Subaru Baja. The double din setup is a perfect fit after removing one extra bin in the center console. The sound is terrific with the new Polk Audio DXi 650s speakers that I installed at the same time. All the hardware and installation instructions were very easy and straight forward. When plugging in an mp3 player or using cds, the sound is just as good as the stereo. There are many settings for the sound including presets from the factory. Overall, I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Pros: Large display, pretty easy to use, and great sound.

nice unit for the price. Installed it in a 91 Miata BRG even though Crutchfield doesn't recommend a double DIN for this application. It fit well with some modification of the original mounting brackets. It had a 3/4 inch gap at the bottom that I made into a shelf to hold an iPod

I had a friend put this in who was a professional installer. He did a little trim work with a dremel to get the face plate to fit properly. He adjusted all the settings (since he understood them much better than I) It sounds amazing in the car. I tried to use the USB port to play music from my smart phone, which was not an I Phone. It didn't work. It did work using the headphone jack plug. Overall, I am very pleased with the sound, although my friend said it took almost as long to adjust the time as it did to install the whole thing. I would highly recommend it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit to replace the stolen unit in our 2001, F250. Crutchfields sales representative was very knowledgeable and spot on with the installation details. This unit has great sound and capabilities, including the Ipod/USB port. Installation in a F250 is tricky since it requires the trimming of the dash and the instructions are a touch vague. The mounting kit provided works very well. It is a nice tight fit and the unit looks absolutely awesome in the dash. It really compliments the truck. The buttons and knobs feel very durable and precise. The front panel layout is very easy to use while driving. I would recommend this unit, especially for the price!

I bought this radio to replace the stock Bose stereo in my 1999 Maxima. The Crutchfield advisor was a great help. He listened to me about how this is a 12 yr old car and that I wanted a quality stereo for under $200 and without hesitating, he suggests the Clarion CX201. This thing has all the features you will need like 18 presets for FM stations, CD player, the required MP3 plug in and a USB port. The sound is great through the stock Bose speakers, it looks great with the blue lights and the installation was a breeze!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, this receiver has exceeded my expectations. Given the speakers I purchased with it, I'm thrilled that it has a good EQ function. I've been able to adjust things so the sound is perfect. I have yet to play with the ipod, usb drive or front input functions, but I don't expect to be disappointed. The menus are comprehensive, and easy to navigate. The receiver allows you to set your own security code, which is a huge plus. The sound so far is great, and it seems to have enough power. I've cranked it as loud as I'm ever going to, and was happy with the results. And, on top of all that, it just looks cool. My only complaint is the alphanumeric display. When viewed from an angle (driver's seat), you are able to to see all the LCD things in the background for the numbers and letters that aren't illuminated. This issue has persisted despite adjusting the contrast. The display does look great when you look directly at it, but I imagine I'd find it difficult to drive sitting on my center armrest. Other than that, I have no complaints. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a reasonably priced received, with a lot of extras.

This is one sweet head unit. The sound quality is AMAZING. I have four 6X9 Sony speakers I had already installed. They sound amazing with the new unit. After I faded the sound to the front of the car, I have no distortion what so ever. I have two small speakers in the front as well, better distributing the power of the unit. Nice display, sweet iPod control, easy remote, GREAT radio sound quality. The ONLY bad thing is that I have not been able to figure out how to set "AM or PM" on the clock. Crutchfield customer support IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD. every company should take some notes from them.

I had the same problem with the spring and the gear. I believe this is a sloppy manufacturing error due to high demand production. But I got a replacement and this one works and sounds great. It's simpler to use than one would think at first. Looks stock, but futuristic as well. Has many adjustments for a highly personalized sound. Excellent choice.

Would have been nice if crutchfield mentioned that on the installation notes for my Honda Element. Nice remote and easy to use interface. I was looking for a basic simple double DIN unit, with the ability to hookup Satellite as my primary concern. This accomplishes that. Order and delivery went great !!! (Thanks Blake !) Installation went fine on my 06 Ford F- 150. The only mods were cutting off the rear tabs on the mounting kit ( But I knew that because I read the reviews on this set-up) Figuring out the mounting kit was easy. The unit looks great in my truck, and plays a lot better than the stock unit. The only problem is, the complexity of the programming itself. I cannot figure out out to set the time, adjust the dimmer or increase the treble. I read the manual, but it reads like you are cracking a safe open (left/right/left/right...).I called my "local" clarion dealer. He said, the unit was still too new, and could not offer me any information. overall I am very happy.....

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion CX201 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory radio brackets and the supplied hardware. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the CX201 in a custom 4" opening. As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

High Visibility LCD: The 13-segment, 2-line high visibility LCD (with black background and white characters) on the CX201 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition. You can adjust the display contrast (1-16) to match angle of installation of the unit.

Large Rotary Control Knob: The unit's large, 3-way, rotary control knob, combined with the ergonomically symmetrical design of the unit, helps to provide equally comfortable operation from the driver side or passenger side. Its intuitiveness and natural feel minimizes stress for the operator and contributes to driving safety.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function "On", the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and then the display returns to the screen saver display.

Anti-Theft System: Since the CX201 does not have detachable face, this unit features Clarion's Anti-Theft System (CATS). CATS allows you to create a 4-digit code that must be entered to operate the unit if it is ever disconnected from your vehicle's battery.

Anti-Theft Indicator: The red Anti-theft indicator on the unit's front-panel is a function for preventing theft. When the CX201 and your vehicle is turned completely off, this indicator will blink to deter theft.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion CX201 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the CX201 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CX201 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 21 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (180 watts total)

BeatEQ: In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns (Bass Boost, Impact, and Excite), Clarion's BeatEQ lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience.

    • Bass Boost: Bass is emphasized +/-3.
    • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized +/-3.
    • Excite: Bass, midrange, and treble are emphasized +/-3.
    • Custom: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble independently +/-7.
      • Bass: You can set the effected bass frequency to 50Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
      • Midrange: You can set the effected midrange frequency to 500Hz, 1.0kHz, or 2.0kHz and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
      • Treble: The effected treble frequency can be set to 5kHz, 10kHz, or 15kHz, and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
    • Off (Flat): Bass, midrange, and treble are set to 0.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

4ch/2V Preamp Output: The Clarion CX201 features 4ch/2V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear). The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as a dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment (normal/reverse), and level control (+/-6).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion CX201 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

    • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output (when activated) will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
    • High-Pass Filter: The CX201 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the head unit.

Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion CX201 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets. Stations can be stored manually or automatically.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Preset Scan: Preset scan receives the stations stored in the unit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired preset station.

Local Seeking: When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Clarion THD301 HD Radio tuner (020THD301, sold separately), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The add-on HD Radio tuner includes iTunes Tagging capability, so if you hear a song on the radio that you like, you can tag it to download later from the iTunes Store.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • Sirius Satellite Radio: To receive Sirius Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 Sirius Connect Universal Vehicle Tuner (607SCC1, sold separately) directly to the head unit's Sirius direct connection (no proprietary interface required).
    • Auxiliary Input: A portable XM or Sirius Satellite Radio receiver can also be connected to the head unit via the front-panel auxiliary input.

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from Sirius or XM.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Mounting: For proper CD playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect and play USB (1.1/2.0) Mass Storage devices loaded with MP3 and WMA files.
