Our take on the Clarion FZ502

It wasn't too long ago you had most of your music collection on disc — heck, maybe even on tapes. But now you've got hundreds or thousands of tunes stored right on your phone, so you don't care if your in-dash player can play CDs or not. Clarion made the FZ502 digital media receiver for everyone who has moved beyond CDs.

Who needs CDs?

It wasn't too long ago you had most of your music collection on disc — heck, maybe even on tapes. But now you've got hundreds or thousands of tunes stored right on your phone, so you don't care if your in-dash player can play CDs or not. Clarion made the FZ502 digital media receiver for everyone who has moved beyond CDs.

Works a lot like your iPod®

Clarion's 7-way rotary control works a lot like an iPod's wheel. You can push, tilt, and turn the wheel to navigate your music library, as you see song info on the two-line display. When you leave the car with your music player, you can slide the built-in protective cover back over the USB slot to keep dust out.

In-dash Pandora® Internet radio

This Clarion lets you tap into the power of Pandora in your car. All you need is your iPhone® and the free Pandora app — just connect to the receiver's USB port, and you can rate songs and change stations from your dash like you do online.

Talk hands-free, stream music

With Bluetooth in your dash, you can keep your eyes on the road while you hear your caller over your speakers. The microphone is embedded in the stereo, so you won't have to install anything extra. And if your phone or another device supports it, you can even stream music straight into the receiver.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Got it installed in about 40 minutes, thanks Crutchfield ! Easy to follow Master Sheets... Clarion sounds wonderful. iPhone 4 auto connects every time. Great hands free cellular ! Easy to use head unit paired with Polk speakers = sound bliss! Top notch system!

Pros: Easy to set up with Crutchfield supplied Master Sheets, and wire harness. Clarion head unit is easy to use with the single big push, push-hold/rotate to select knobby control. Clock, blue tooth, and iPod iPhone controls are easy to configure

    Cons: None.

    Very pleased.

The center knob being used to control all functions takes some getting used to but I believe it is a small sacrifice considering the streamlined look it gives the face.

Pros: USB and aux. input slide cover Auto pairing with Bluetooth devices

Cons: Center knob controls all functions

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since I installed this receiver(with the included adapters/wiring harness') I've been in love. A couple of weeks prior to purchasing this, I replaced all the speakers in my vehicle. The factory receiver just didn't have enough power to push the new speakers, so I found this receiver. There was a huge difference in sound quality and maximum volume. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of both the speakers and this receiver.

Pros: The sound quality is outstanding, and it has every feature you could want. BlueTooth Streaming, USB input, and an AUX input on the front.

Cons: The controls are a bit difficult to get used to.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation review: 2004 Chrysler Pacifica; replaced standard factory AM/FM/CD. Kept factory speakers FL, FLT, FC, FRT, FR, RL, RR no sub. Purchased car-specific installation kit; bought additional parts to perform splicing (had tools already). Crutchfield instructions great, but twiring instructions supplied with installation kit very poor; names of connectors were reversed, some wires identified as RCA were just +/-, dimmer line did not pass thru amp interface box, poor diagram. Thankfully install was successful. Performance review. Shocked at the significant improvement in sound quality considering I retained the original speakers. A lot more and tighter bass; treble is much less harsh yet more detailed and brilliant. The unit sounds excellent over AUX if your source has a clean headphone amp/driver. However the Bluetooth A2DP streaming is absolutely the coolest thing going. Get in car, turn on the stereo, it pairs with your mobile device automatically. The sound quality over Bluetooth is fantastic. I only rip to .wav format, so I am really pushing the Bluetooth bandwidth. Every once in a while there is a slight dropout/hiccup, but it is always the fault of the source (entering sleep mode, popup reminder, etc.). Have not tried a USB stick, but the USB port will charge your device which is great. The Sound menu is buried way too deep. Clock never displays the time. Dimmer is 2-stage only. Final verdict: Ergonomics need work but audio is beyond reproach.

Pros: Audio quality over Bluetooth and AUX, Bluetooth A2DP music streaming works very well, USB will charge mobile devices, remote control is nifty

Cons: Operating interface is efficient but steep learning curve. Very easy to execute a wrong command...often need to start over. Dimmer is only 2-stage Bright / Medium...never gets truly dim and does not dim in an analog manner like the other car dash lights.

This reciever has one of the best sound quality i have had out of many different manufacturers I have owned.

Pros: Built in bluetooth, fantastic sound quality.

Cons: Would like for the usb input to be on back with extension to hide ipod while in use.

    iOS 6 / iPone 5 beware

dontpanic from tidewater VA on 2/2/2013

Very well constructed, great sound quality, do your research before buying!! Does not work properly with iOS 6 / iPhone 5 over bluetooth. Clarion has not implemented compatibility with the latest Bluetooth controls which makes the FZ502 little more than a bluetooth speaker with no playback controls or track meta-data. Works like a dream via USB. see: The single knob interface is very fussy and unnecessarily distracting, you will have to use the remote for some functionality - such as checking the time.

Pros: sleek design, USB pandora and Ipod controls well implemented, sound quality a pleasant surprise.

Cons: incompatibility with iOS 6 is pretty much inexcusable. the single knob control is a step back in usability. some functions not accessible from the head unit - remote required

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't remember what it was that turned me onto Clarion, but I bought my first head unit when I was 16, and they've been Clarion without exception for the last 17 year. Granted, that doesn't translate to a mountain of products, but I've always been happy with them. My first head unit survived through totaling 3 cars it was in. I went with this unit because I don't always have blank CD's anymore, or remember to burn music onto them when I do. I do however always have tons of music on my phone, so it made sense to capitalize on that for me. Not only that, but anyone who travels with me will be able to share their library (should I allow it). I find that the friends I grant control of my stereo to are the same friends I'd take a bullet for. The single button is a little tricky, and I'm definitely still getting use to it, but the look fits what I like, so it's worth the trouble. Setting the clock was a little difficult, I thought I had a wire mixed up that was resetting the time when I turned my car off, but I noticed the audio settings were sticking, so I figured I did something wrong with the clock and got it straightened out. I'm also not use to all the finite audio controls. Usually it's been BASS, TREBLE F R L R and that was that. I'm enjoying the new settings as I get them under control.

Pros: Bluetooth Front Aux / USB Aesthetics Factory speakers sound a TON better

Cons: I didn't buy it sooner Occasional Bluetooth Lag

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks very clean and modern. Sound quality is quite good through aftermarket speakers (Kicker rear 6x9, Pioneer 6.5 front). Sound enhancements are reasonable with my liking towards the "Custom" sound setting - this unit allows you to select crossover points and slope. Really neat. One feature that might be too drastic is the fader and L/R balance. Just a minor one step adjustment from "center" is pretty drastic. This unit also features the ability to control(enhance or reduce) even the pre-programmed sound effects! I like that. The one knob control looks good, acts well, feels great, but also makes for getting to what you want to change pretty tedious. Also, if you happen to bump it up or down, side to side while doing anything in the "Adjustment" section, you song or channel selection could change instantly or go to AUX mode. This will take a slight amount of getting used to for smoother operations. This is my 3rd purchase from Crutchfields for 3 different cars. I'm VERY pleased with the Master sheet feature and the accessories that make for easy plug and play. Just the standard soldering of wires to harnesses and the rest is really easy. My question to anyone who is wondering if they want to buy from Crutchfields. is: "Why would you buy from anyone else?" Fast and well packaged eco-friendly shipping(peanuts dissolve in water - I use it in the garden); Super friendly instructions and super matched harness and plugs. Installed in 35 minutes.

Pros: Sleek, modern look, nice lighting and "piano-black" looking face. Sliding cover to protect from dust, a nice touch(aux and USB port), easy to operate once it is set up, Good potential Head unit. A lot of features... it is a nice buy at a very fair price.

Cons: The 'one-knob' takes a bit of getting used to - much like the BMW and MB's interior function button/knob. Also, while operating it to adjust, if you mistakenly toggle it up or down, you may revert back to the AUX feature or hear the static of a non functional radio station channel. LOL Takes a bit of getting used to while setting up.

I've had the Clarion FZ502 for about two months now, and I have been happy with it.

    Pros: Bluetooth functionality, locking, good-looking

Cons: the unit doesn't respond to the remote until the remote is nearly in front of the unit (i.e., if you're driving and have the remote in your hand, you have to move your hand from its normal position to directly in front of the unit in order for it to respond to the remote).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

for the money.....great stereo. I wanted a no frills fm receiver that would easily interface with iphone, and thats what the clarion did. Better FM reception than kenwood previously in vehicle, and single chord interface with ipone. no cd, didnt run satellite radio or pandora, but for what i'm using it for, it works great. sound quality is exceptional, even in jeep wrangler.

Pros: simple, no unnecessary frills. great sound, siplistic design and interface.

Cons: display could stand to have more lines, but for the money, its great.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology (powered by Parrot): The Clarion FZ502 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 2.0+EDR (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Before using your Bluetooth enabled device, it must be paired to the FZ502. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled cell-phones with the Clarion head unit (only one paired phone can be used at a time). The Clarion FZ502 is compatible with most Bluetooth enabled mobile phones, including the Apple iPhone.

Note: The Clarion FZ502 is not compatible with all Bluetooth enabled phones or audio players. Visit Clarion Bluetooth Support for complete list of compatible phones and players.

Hands-Free Communication: The FZ502 supports Bluetooth hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The FZ502 can be set to automatically answer your incoming calls and mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can instantly carry on a phone conversation hands-free. An integrated front-panel microphone carries on your side of the conversation while your car's speakers are used to hear the other person. You can make a call by entering the phone number, selecting a contact from your Phonebook list, or using the Call History Log of received/dialed/missed calls.

    • Answering A Call: During an incoming call, the caller's phone number will be seen on the unit's LCD and a ring-tone will be heard through your car stereo speakers. You can then manually answer the incoming call from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can also set the unit to automatically answer an incoming call within 5 seconds.
    • Making A Call: You can make a call using the Clarion head unit's front-panel controls.
      • Direct Dial: Outgoing calls can be made be entering telephone numbers (0-9, *, #, +) directly via the car stereo's rotary control knob.
      • Phonebook: You can search for contact names in your mobile phone's phonebook from the Clarion FZ502 and then make your call. The head unit can store up to 500 contact numbers.
      • Call Log: You can also make a call by searching your mobile phone's call history (Received/Dialed/Missed) from the Clarion FZ502.
      • Redial: You can simply redial the last number dialed with a press of a single button on the head unit.

Integrated Microphone: The Clarion FZ502 features an integrated front-panel microphone to carry on your side of a conversation during a Bluetooth phone call. You can adjust the microphone gain (+/-5) for each paired mobile phone device.

External Microphone (optional): The Clarion RCB-199 (020RCB199, sold separately) is an external microphone which can be connected to Clarion FZ502. The RCB-199 external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of the head unit. The microphone features an attached 13.25' cord terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector which plugs into the microphone input on the rear-chassis of your compatible Clarion head unit. The microphone also features an integrated sun-visor clip for mounting the external microphone in your vehicle. The integrated bracket allows the microphone to swivel left-to-right and rotate up-or-down.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Clarion FZ502 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The FZ502 will be able to control your stored music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Fast-Forward/Reverse. The FZ502 also supports audio streaming of music apps from your smartphone, but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view & control streaming music apps. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: The iPhone 5 only offers Bluetooth audio streaming without control or metadata display.

    AM/FM Tuner + SiriusXM Ready

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion FZ502 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering manual, seek, & preset tuning.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Preset Stations: 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets can stored. Stations can be stored manually or automatically.

Preset Scan: Preset scan receives the stations stored in the unit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired preset station.

Local Seeking: When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Clarion THD301 HD Radio tuner (020THD301, sold separately), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The add-on HD Radio tuner includes iTunes Tagging capability, so if you hear a song on the radio that you like, you can tag it to download later from the iTunes Store.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion FZ502 employs a MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) power amplifier capable of delivering 45W (Peak) x 4ch of high quality sound with superior linearity & less distortion than conventional power amps, even with the volume cranked up.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the FZ502 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the FZ502 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 19 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 45 watts x 4 channels (180 watts total)

BeatEQ: BeatEQ lets you tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience. The Clarion CD receiver provides 4 preset EQ curves (Bass Boost, Impact, Excite, Off) and 1 custom EQ curve. Bass Boost emphasizes the bass portion of your music; Impact emphasizes the bass & treble portions of your music; Excite emphasizes bass, midrange & treble portions of your music; while Flat sets the bass, midrange, & treble to 0. The Custom EQ lets you freely customize the frequency, Q-factor, and level of the bass, midrange, &  treble.

BeatEQ (Custom Mode) Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 50Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz 0.7, 1, 1.4, 2.0 -7 to + 7 dB
    Midrange 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz
    Treble 5kHz, 10kHz, 15kHz

Note: BeatEQ settings are applied to all sources.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

4ch/2V Preamp Output: The Clarion FZ502 features 4ch/2V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear). The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as a dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer output with a low-pass filter and level control (+/-6).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion FZ502 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

    • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
    • High-Pass Filter: The FZ502 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the head unit.

Beep: The head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Two-Line LCD: The two-line, high visibility LCD (with black background and white characters) on the FZ502 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition.

7-Way Rotary Control Dial: The FZ502 employs a centered 7-way rotary control dial which provides full control of the digital media receiver and your connected devices.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function "On", the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and then the display returns to the screen saver display.

Mounting: You can install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote: The FZ502 comes supplied with a 20-key infrared wireless remote control (RCX003) for wireless operation of the digital media receiver and your connected devices. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 Lithium Cell 3-volt battery.

OEM Remote Ready: The unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (541SWIRC, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).
