Our take on the Clarion M475

Let your music entertain you offshore. Clarion's M475 marine CD receiver features a powerful built-in amplifer that helps this receiver pump out music over noise generated by the wind and waves. The M475 can play CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, including discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can also add a Clarion TV tuner, CD changer, satellite radio, or iPod adapter to extend your entertainment options.

The M475 can play CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, including discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files. Clarion locates the auxiliary input on the front of the stereo for easy access when you want to plug in a portable player or some other audio source. You can adjust the sound to your liking with the rotary volume and Z-Enhancer customization controls. Detach the faceplate and take it with you for safekeeping when you leave your boat.

When it comes to reliability, the M475 passes the test, meeting or exceeding international standards for protection against salt, fog, and UV exposure. Clarion protects the circuit boards with a "HumiSeal" coating that keeps out moisture, and the sealed stainless steel chassis resists corrosion. Your stereo will still look and sound great after years on the water.

Works as described. Have had installed for 2 years and has worked flawlessly. I highly recommend it.

Five stars all the way. Bought this when it fist came out, and have used it relentlessly since then. Decided to add a Satellite system to it as well. Awesome features, much better than the JVC I replaced it with. Only downside is that you really need to know your way around all the controls, but that's just me. If you're looking for top quality at an affordable price, look no further.

    Works great!

If you're trying to get a great product and not spend a ton of money this is it. No complaints at all.

    Excellent Marine replacement choice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit and mated it with Polk Audio speakers to replace the original stereo in my 22 foot deck boat. What a difference! The bass is solid without a sub woofer and the power deilvery from the 4 ohm polks is impressive. Only negative that I can find is that the wireless remote doesn't work through the smoked spastic cover in my dash, but I doubt that any infrared remotes will.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver sounds much better than the Sony that it replaced. The receiver was sealed better with a complete stainless steel exterior case. It should last longer on my boat than the older unit did. The installation was so easy even I could do it ---which I did. I would and do recomend this to anyone looking in this price range.

    Great Stereo!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Stereo. Works out awesome in the boat. Tons of features and handles the waves without skipping. Much better than the Pioneer that the previous owner had in there. I will be putting Clarion's in my boats for years to come!

    Huge improvement over my XDM3

Mitch from Norman, OK on 4/7/2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got this radio in to replace a Clarion XMD3. I pulled it out of the box, plugged in all the same wiring harness and wired remotes (2) from my XMD3 and everything worked great. Haven't had it out on the water yet but so far I'm very impressed with this radio. It's layout is way better than my XMD3 and has plenty of power for what I need. I also bought the ipod accessory and it worked flawlessly.

    Great unit for marine application..

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just had this unit installed in my new North River 18'6" Seahawk. Unbelievably good sound deep bass, thought I might have needed an amp but it was matched with a pair of Polk Audio db651 marine grade speakers belive me no amp is needed.. So far all is well lets just see if I encounter any problems in the future.. I will keep updating...

    2004 Wrangler Install

    Emily from Maine on 1/21/2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have to say, I love this head unit, very easy to install with Crutchfield's installation accessories. (Save yourself the aggravation and make sure you a 10 mm ratchet to remove the bracket that supports the factory radio in the wrangler.) Huge sound and volume improvement over factory stereo, even with the factory speakers. FM sensitivity is impressive, lots of options, settings, and controls. Certain settings are tricky to figure out, but the owner's manual comes in handy, the unit is mostley very intuitive. Only complaint is the equalizer pre-sets, often sound hollow or just completely wrong, better to set your equalizer yourself anyway. The stereo is beautiful, stainless steel, you can definitely tell that it's a real good quality unit and will stand up to the abuse of all the elements.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the Clarion M475 in my hot tub. The Clarion meets and exceeds my expectation on performance. The 2 draw backs are the combo Source and Power on/off button, it is not that user freindly. The included remote has a power on/off button that is very user freindly (the remote is not water tight). The documentation is ruff, The clarion has allot of features and its documentaion is difficult to read and apply. I resorted to just playing with the buttons and had it set up in 1/2 the time. The electronic menu for all funtion are layed out well, and the time setting and Z-enhacement takes a few attemps to get it right, my over all view is this is a good unit. and I would buy it again if needed.

    External Device Controls

Marine Receiver: The Clarion M475 Marine CD receiver has been engineered and tested for use in the harsh marine environment. The M475 meets ASTM B117 and ASTM D4329 guidelines ensuring the receiver's resistant to salt, fog and UV exposure. The unit features a sealed stainless steel chassis and drip shield over the wire connections to keep water from dripping onto the internal circuits and wire connections. The receiver also features a HumiSeal coated PCB to protect against corrosion. This means the main circuit boards features a silicone coating to help resist the effects of humidity.

Shooting Star DCP Design: In this design, all the frequently used controls are as close as possible to the driver for ease of operation. The organizing of the controls on the left side of the detachable control panel allows for a high visibility, easy to read single line display. This enables you to see station or track information quickly and easily with minimal distraction from the road. Additionally, a precision rotary volume control knob is centrally located for optimum control from either the driver's or passenger side seat.

CEA-2006 Compliant Amplifier: The Clarion M475 amplifier section is rated at 21 Watts RMS x 4 channels in 4 ohms at 1% THD+N with a 91 dBA signal-to-noise ratio.

MP3/WMA Playback: The unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, up to 255 files per folder, and up to 510 total files. Bit rates for MP3 are 8-320 kbps, plus VBR (Variable Bit Rates). Bit rates for WMA are 48-192 kbps. This unit is compatible with, and will display MP3 and WMA ID3 tags.

Z-Enhancer: The Z-Enhancer function features three types of sound tone effects stored in memory. You can choose from the following.

    • B-Boost: Bass frequencies are emphasized from -3dB to +3dB
    • Impact: Bass and Treble frequencies are emphasized from -3dB to +3db
    • Excite: Bass and Treble frequencies emphasized from -3dB to +3dB and Mid frequencies de-emphasized

Note: When the Z-Enhancer feature is on, the bass and treble controls cannot be adjusted.

Bass and Treble: When not using the Z-Enhancer you can adjust the Bass (60Hz) and Treble (10kHz) independently from -7 to +7 (+/-14 dB).

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass EX feature provides an extra boost of bass when activated. Unlike conventional loudness features which boost the low frequency range at around 100Hz, the Magna Bass EX boosts the low- and center-range frequencies of about 50Hz. By focusing on the lower frequencies, the added bass impact won't distort or muffle the high frequencies.

3 Sets of 2V Preouts: The M475 features front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs on a set of pigtails attached to the rear chassis. The subwoofer output is non-fading and its output level can be adjusted from -6 to +6.

Amp Canceller: If you choose to connect the receiver to external amplifiers, you can turn off the built-in amplifier for better sound quality.

Auto Store: Auto Store is a function for automatically storing up to 6 stations in sequential order in the provided preset bands. The receiver features 3 FM bands and 1 AM band; giving you a total of 18 FM bands and 6 AM bands.

Preset Scan: Preset Scan plays the stations stored in the preset memory momentarily. This function is useful when searching or a desired station in memory.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Front Auxiliary: The CD player feature a 3.5mm stereo minijack input on the front panel to enable you to connect an external portable audio source such as an MP3 player. You can adjust the input sensitivity level of the AUX input from Low, Mid to High to match the output level of your portable audio device. The minijack input features a rubber cover when not in use to protect against corosion.

Cell Phone Interrupt: If you connect this unit to your vehicle's cellular phone with a separately sold hands-free kit supporting AUX input, you can either listen to your telephone calls on your car speakers or have your car's audio system automatically muted when a phone call comes in.

Dimmer Control: The unit features a Dimmer Control which allows you to select either "On" or "Off" to the dim the radio's display.

Display Contrast: You can set the contrast level between 1 and 8 for best display visibility.

Top Function: During CD playback, the Top Function restarts the CD player at the first track of the disc.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Backup Eject: The Backup Eject feature allows you to eject a disc even if the power to the unit is turned off.

Mounting: You can install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal. When ISO-DIN mounting, you will need to use your vehicle radio's original factory ISO screws.

Optional Wired Remote Controls: The M475 comes supplied with the Clarion RCB-176-600 wireless remote. The M475 is also equipped with a rear mounted DIN connector to accommodate an optional Clarion wired marine remote control. The CMRC1-SB (item number 020CMRC1) wired remote with LCD and the CMRC2-SB (item number 020CMRC2) wired remote without LCD are both compatible with the M475 receiver.

    External Device Controls
