Our take on the Clarion NX404

Whether you rock an iPhone® or Android™ smartphone, you want a receiver that gives you the most control. Clarion's NX404 navigation receiver not only delivers accurate guidance and a wealth of entertainment options, but it gives you safe ways to integrate your phone so you and your passengers can stay connected on the go.

Your in-dash multimedia and smartphone command center

Whether you rock an iPhone® or Android™ smartphone, you want a receiver that gives you the most control. Clarion's NX404 navigation receiver not only delivers accurate guidance and a wealth of entertainment options, but it gives you safe ways to integrate your phone so you and your passengers can stay connected on the go.

It all starts with the gorgeous 6.2" touch display

The NX404's 6.2" screen gives you a great view of the receiver's built-in maps of all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. You'll have access to over 11 million points of interest, along with 3D mapping that allows realistic views of terrain, buildings, and landmarks in select metropolitan areas. The display also supports "flick" operation, just like your smartphone. Animated menu icons that can be dragged and dropped give your dash a little personality, while allowing you to prioritize functions and A/V sources.

Bluetooth® for hands-free calls and streaming music

Built-in Bluetooth lets you talk hands-free on your compatible phone so you can keep your hands on the wheel. When a call comes in, you can tap the screen to answer the call and hear your caller over the speakers. And you can even stream tunes if your phone or other device supports it. The NX404 features a built-in microphone, or you can add an optional external mic for added clarity during calls in problem vehicles.

Android smartphone integration

Connect a compatible Android smartphone to the NX404 with an HDMI cable to enjoy the receiver's Android compatibility, which allows you to see the display of your smartphone right on the receiver's screen. You can do a lot of cool stuff when you're parked, like check out photos and high-definition video, surf the web, and view smartphone apps on the 6.2" display.

Clarion caters to the iPhone, too

Apple users can enjoy direct iPod® and iPhone audio control with a simple USB connection or via Bluetooth. iPhone 5/5c/5s users will need to add a couple of more adapters, including an HDMI cable and an Apple Lightning™ Digital AV Adapter to get full access to audio and video content from their device.

Pandora® Internet radio as you roam

Take your Pandora stations with you — run the free Pandora app on your phone and control it from the NX404's touchscreen. You can skip tracks, change stations, and thumbs up/thumbs down songs just like you do online. For the iPhone, you'll need a USB or Bluetooth connection; Android phones control Pandora via Bluetooth.

A sound choice

Into full-resolution audio files? The NX404 will play lossless FLAC audio files from your flash drive, so you can enjoy up to 24-bit/192 kHz clarity behind the wheel. Clarion's powerful built-in amp does a great job driving your speaker system. You can choose from four preset tone settings, or make your own using the 3-band parametric equalizer. The subwoofer volume control lets you dial in just the right amount of bass if you've got a sub hooked up, and you've got high- and low-pass filters for further sound customization. Clarion includes a handy remote for additional tweaking.

Get connected

The NX404 boasts myriad connection points beyond the HDMI input. You'll find a pair of USB inputs on the receiver's back panel, useful for plugging in a dedicated MP3 player plus a flash drive, and you can use the front 3.5mm A/V input and rear RCA A/V inputs for hooking up external sources. A dedicated rear-view camera input allows you to add a layer of safety to your travels. Three sets of 2-volt preamp outputs let you add amplifiers and subwoofers to the mix.

Fun for the cinematically inclined

Enjoy watching DVDs up front while you're parked, or hook up a video screen in the back so the kids can watch movies as you drive — thanks to Clarion's "2-Zone" operation, your backseat gang can watch a video while you and your co-pilot enjoy music up front.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. I researched different systems for 2 days before purchasing this one. My main focus was that it came with a great GPS system and this was is amazing! I also use the audio bluetooth to listen to my music daily and am loving the phone calls coming through to my radio. I would definitely reccomend this to a friend and am glad this is the product I ended up purchasing. Crutchfield also had the best price on it by far!

    Pros: GPS

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received this unit to replace the stock radio in my 2011 Honda Accord SE and it is awesome! The user interface is super easy to use and it adds an overall sexy look to my dash now. The stereo has GPS, HDMI, double rear USB ports, support for rear-view camera, Bluetooth, Pandora (via smartphone Bluetooth), and basically all of the other basic features you'd find in an aftermarket stereo. The remote that comes with it is also super handy. I have an iPhone 6 Plus and the Bluetooth works perfectly for me. For those who aren't very patient, it does take up to around 7-8 seconds to boot up, but you can basically skip over the initial GPS load time by clicking on the menu button and go straight into the other functions. It can take a little bit of time switching Bluetooth devices. It also does take about 3 seconds for the rear-view camera to kick in when going in reverse. Lastly, it can take a few too many finger clicks to navigate through the menus, but after using it a lot, you can get really quick at it - just like texting. But that's being super critical. Otherwise, this stereo is sweet and a total steal for the price point. I love it!

Pros: So many different functions, great GPS, awesome user interface, Bluetooth works perfect, cool, sleek, and sexy

Cons: Initial and rear-view camera boot time, no satellite radio

    2007 Mitsubishi Outlander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was searching for a replacement for my stock 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Radio. I wanted navigation and an upgrade to the stereo. In looking for the options under $600, this stood out. Clarion has been around for a while with consistently good reviews. This double DIN unit has built in bluetooth, navigation, front and rear AUX ports and two rear USB cords with extensions, amongst other features. The reviews were also very good, and for the money, seemed too good to be true. Unit was installed very easily. Using the Metra branded wire harness and dash kit, everything was installed from beginning to end, following the instructions from Metra and Clarion in under two hours. Harness wire splicing was straight forward. I ended up placing the navigation antenna under the dash, even though the manual states to place it on the dash. I saw many general navigation installation videos which shows professional installation below the dash without much difference in signal strength. So far, I have not noticed any drop in navigation signal. In fact, the signal picks up very quickly and a lot quicker (within seconds usually) than any portable GPS units I have used. Upon powering up for the first time, there are a few initial steps such as language and navigation options and you are good to go. The 2 USB rear ports have 2-foot (or so) cords that you can extend into your glove compartment or other dash openings for easy access. The interface itself is great. Bluetooth connected quickly and wor

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I want to say that Crutchfield tech support is the best in the business. That being said I tried very hard to be able to keep this unit but finally had to give it up. The deciding factor was the poor bluetooth connection with my Iphone 6 plus and the Clarion unit. The quality of bluetooth telephone communication was so poor, callers could not understand me when I was using the speaker phone. Crutchfield tech support thought it could be a defective unit and sent me a replacement unit which I received the very next day. They provided a label for free return shipping of the original unit after I installed the new one. Unfortunately the problem existed with the second unit so they replaced the unit with the Pioneer AVIC 5000NEX. The Pioneer has excellent bluetooth sound quality. I did like the Navigation and menu setup on the Clarion. Had it not been for the Bluetooth problems I would have been happy with the unit. A nice feature of the unit is the ability to arrange the menu icons in the order most convenient for you. Some adjustments, however, require a number of touches to get to where you need to be, and an equal number to back out. The telephone screen was missing one major feature: a screen for frequently called numbers. I solved that problem by putting my most frequently called numbers in my contact list with the letter A in front of them. That way they show up at the top of the contact list.

Pros: Good Navigation, excellent screen, nice main menus, good sound quality (other than bluetooth telephone connection). The support of Crutchfield tech support is essential in installing these complicated high tech head units.

Cons: Bluetooth telephone conversations were so garbled as to be useless with my Iphone 6 Plus No speed dialer

    2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After purchasing my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited I missed having Bluetooth and navigation in dash. My Ford truck had the factory system which was flawless, so I wanted something with the same functions. After doing a lot of research and reading reviews like these, I choose the NX404 for the functions and price. I was not disappointed. Great Navigation thats easy to use( with some really cool features), Bluetooth for phone and audio streaming is great ( iphone 5 ). Radio sounds great( I used the factory amp) and I also installed the Crux backup camera. If your looking for an in dash unit, this is the one to get. Also Crutchfield support is spot on. Thanks again, for another great experience.

i have had my nx404 installed in my hummer h3 for about 3 weeks now and let me say its a lot of fun playing with it because you find different things you can do with it all of the time.i was going to buy the higher end pioneer but a knowledgeable Crutchfield product anylyst pointed me in this direction. he listened to my wants and needs and saved me about 400 dollars and im glad i went with clarion because the pioneer seems more iphone friendly and i have an android. i had it professionally installed but the gps, blutooth and stereo sound is great compared to factory stereo. looks great indash and touch screen is spot on just dont be impatient. im not one to read instructions but the more i use it, the more i am pleased and impressed. great Crutchfield support for all of your stupid common sense quaestions . the only minor con i have is trying to match the color of the unit to the color of the dash. im sure it can be done with a bit more tweaking. time will tell but all in all very pleased with purchase and functions of this unit. thanks again.

Pros: excellent gps, bluetooth and video screen. great sound over factory radio with the stock speakers. very adjustable to owners preference and very user friendly.

Cons: adjusting dial color takes some time but getting very close

    2002 Honda CRV LX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very affordable way to integrate navigation, iPhone pairing and rearview camera in one very good sounding sound system. It has a touch screen, which makes operations a lot easier than my wife's Acura's setup, which has to be controlled with a knob. The picture is sharp, icons make sense and stuff just works. Warning: the speed limit nag is on by default, you can turn the fiend off in Settings. Also, download the manuals from their website, one a general one, the other strictly for navigation, as they are more complete than the printed version that comes with the unit. I have a beloved 2002 Honda CRV, with low miles, and I feel now that I can keep it for quite a while longer without any 'electronic envy' for newer cars with all their bells and whistles.

Pros: You get: GPS navigation, hands-free calling on your blue-tooth enabled phone, the ability to add a rearview camera, and a fine stereo with CD/DVD playback. The touchscreen makes working the thing a breeze. What's there not to like?

    Cons: None yet discovered.

    Terrific product!

    2003 Toyota Matrix
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had it installed for a week, and as a 79-year old, am still reading the 168 page manual. However, everything I have tried, I have liked! The GPS seems to work well. I love being able to use Bluetooth to make my telephone calls. And having suffered with no MP3 capability for the first 12 years of owning my 2003 Toyota Matrix, it is a joy to plug in flash drive with my favorite music and hear the music through the original equipment 6-speaker sound system. I thought I might miss my 6-CD changer, but this product plays CD's and DVD's and with the USD ports, I don't really need to play CD's much anymore. Glad the Crutchfield advisor (Jackson) recommended this one after I told him my desires.

    Pros: See above

Cons: Well, I miss my "info" button on my radio where I can learn what was playing at the moment, but it is a tradeoff I was very happy to make!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had my unit installed for about a week now and I have minimum complaints. I only say minimum because I haven't have any major problems but minor quirks. One would be the music information not showing up when I hook my iPhone to the music. That's only happened twice and I know it sounds petty to talk about but I like to view my artwork etc. Another would be not being able to view step by step directions on the nav. Now really it could just be me being slow and not looking hard enough but I have not found this feature. Other than that I LOVE this head unit. It's unique and perfect in everyday and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. The mirroring feature is really cool and is easy to use. Back up camera hooked easily and the picture is crisp. Bluetooth connected easily and the unit came with an external mic. Haven't had any complaints about others being able to hear me. I will post another review in a month or so if there are any changes, but as of right now I would recommend this head unit to anyone!

Pros: Unique display, easy Bluetooth connection, mirroring, built in nav

Cons: No step by step direction in nav (apparently but again that could be me)

    Minesh from California on 3/18/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was a huge improvement than the stock head unit that came with the H3. The price point for what you get was pretty much spot on what I was hoping for! The sound quality improved and I couldn't be happier with the Bluetooth audio streaming.

Pros: Pros: -Looks slick and easy to navigate -Great audio performance, keep in mind I'm not an audiophile but know when stuff sounds like cr*p. -Navigation is spot on. People complain about the start of time of the Nav functions, and I didn't find any problems with it. I turn the car on and by the time I get my belt on and check the mirrors the thing was up and running, so people who complain about that likely hit the gas the moment they turn the key. -BT Audio streaming sounds great!

Cons: Cons -The phone sounds like crap from time to time. It's crackles more than anything I've ever experienced so I'm not sure what the issue is. The Bluetooth audio sounds great but for some reason Bluetooth phone audio sounds like something from the 70's with heavy cracking noises -I wish there was more EQ controls but the presets are OK.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good. Took 4hrs to install this Clarion unit on the Saturday and another 4 hrs on the Sunday to install the backup camera. Crutchfield service was great. I had to call them 6 times with questions on the wiring and install. (4 wires was not a color to color match.. not sure why..) I also installed 2 USP permenant inputs whcih came out really nice. Radio itself is awesome. It synced right away with my iPhone 6 and then my wifes 5S. No issues so far. When one is connected you can go through the whole phones music playlist right on the Unit so phone stays untouched. Guess only gripe so far is turning the unit off, havnt figured it out yet on how to do that quickly when you suddenly need quiet time to listen or talk..

Pros: iPhone 6, All inclusive unit (GPS, Bluetooth, DVD and Backup Camera

Cons: So far just quick off button is missed, may be a setting for it someplace..

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alright, for the cost it is indeed a steal. Very hard to get into the in-dash gps head units from Pioneer or Kenwood for the same price, near impossible. However, is it really worth it? My decision to buy this is starting to waiver. Horrible touch sensitivity, crappy UI and I mean just garbage ui. Trying to rearrange the tiles on the 3 home pages is a feat, it took me nearly half an hour.

Pros: The navigation is not bad. I think it is nice to be able to get a choice of routes if you elect to deviate what was provided by the search. Its search is pretty good too. Overall the unit is easy to setup and the cost.

Cons: Color matching is the stupidest ordeal I have ever experienced colors are off. The UI sucks along with touch sensitivity and so does the sound features and menu. You would think, if you have a song title longer than the maximum allowed characters it will scroll so you can see the entire name, not the case unless the song is playing. No radio station naming makes for a very boring radio interface. Poor radio reception on some channels, much worse than my factory radio. There are better options.

    Excellent unit for the cost

    2012 Ram 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this radio/navigation unit in a 2012 RAM 1500. My truck originally had the low dollar CD player/radio. This was a great addition to the truck. I was able to get rid of my Garmin and add Bluetooth for the phone and music. I loaded a 32GB USB flash drive with music and will never miss satalite radio. I even put some cartoon videos on the flash drive so my kids can have entertainment while my wife is shopping. I also replaced all six speakers with Kicker. This radio drives them well without an amplifier.

    Pros: Featues, features, features.

Cons: Some delay in menu navigation. The next unit up has voice control.

    Great Value

    Dan from Connecticut on 3/10/2015

Been using the NX404 in a 2001 F-350 for approximately 8 months now and it's a great value. The sound and funtionality is good via Pandora, Bluetooth and FM Radio and the HDMI video is great for streaming Netflix from the iPhone. Navigation works very well once spending time toggling preferences and turning off the annoying speed warning. Backup cam functionality is good, the display switches quickly and interrupts all other functions. GPS works well running Nav in background of any App, a small bar drops down to que your next course change. Fairly quick boot time and boots in single digit ambient temperatures.

Pros: Good Nav and GPS reception. Full Pandora functionality over BT. Mechanical volume knob works well in bumpy vehicles. Customizable shortcut menu. Good speakerphone when used with remote mic, listeners receive clear Mic sound even in a loud Deisel truck.

Cons: Stock software; Bluetooth speakerphone was unusable. Padora would not work via Bluetooth. iPhone needed to be paired every few days. After software update; Sometimes need to reboot to get Pandora BT to link to iPhone. Auto backup cam switching during multiple FW/Reverse maneuvers loses signal. General: Micro SD card slot in awkward location and difficult to remove card. Nav screen can get very busy at times and hard to understand. Speaker phone audio through one speaker only.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Do not be fooled by the bad reviews on this website. First off one of the reviews i read said the user manual and diagrams are useless. False. They may be referring to the quick start up guide. The user manual is on a CD not a booklet. The maps are also very easy to update and you can update for free if you do so within the first 30 days of owning it. There is an internet site you can use to make it happen and it is very very simple process to follow but does require some downloading to your pc or laptop. Also it was mentioned a sticker leaves residue on the screen well that sticker is attached to a protective film that covers the entire acre for protection and peels right off.

Pros: Great sound, easy to use, can't beat the price.customizable

Cons: Crutchfield offers the wiring harness and installation kit for free that you need to install in your vehicle but will not send it unless you tell them you need it which i didnt know from online ordering and if i hadent called customer support instantly to confirm my suspicions i would have been disappointed when i received the unit and could not install it.

Crutchfield response on 3/4/2015 Dicky, thanks for the great review of the NX404. I'm sure your comments will help reassure a lot of other people considering this receiver. We wanted to comment on your experience regarding the installation accessories. Normally, when you enter your vehicle info and add a stereo to your shopping cart, our website shows you the installation accessories you need and lets you add them to the cart. Since these accessories are not always free, we don't want to force them on anyone, so we also give you the option of not receiving the accessories. It looks like you accidentally clicked on that option instead of adding them to your order. Thank you for calling Customer Support to check on this.the last thing we want is for you to not get the hardware you need to install your new receiver!

This is my first system like this for my 2010 Camaro. This unit does it all. The GPS is pretty accurate but a much steeper learning curve than say a Garmin GPS. Plenty of tweaks available to get the system sounding and looking like you want it.

Pros: Everything so far with one small exception (see cons)

Cons: The speed warnings on the GPS. Go even a couple miles over the speed limit and you are reminded of it every time. Can't figure out how to turn this feature off.

Buyer beware. Gps has very old maps. Only 30 days to update. Then 69.0

Charles from Livingston, TN on 2/13/2015

This unit works fine has some nice features. Don't be fooled by the one year warranty, or the statement that the maps are easily updated. The maps it comes loaded with are several years old. You have 30 days from the time you power it on to update them, otherwise they want you to pay 69.00 for them! Navieextra customer support is non existent. For the amount this cost, I expected more service than that. There is a single small statement in the manual on page 61 I think about the map updates. Who is going to find that? I would not purchase the unit again after finding out what kind of customer loyalty they have..

Pros: Has nice features. Overall value is not worth the price of the head unit.

Cons: Clarion naviextras support is a joke. Only 30 days to update maps from the time the device is powered on. 2014 model maps are 5 years old

While in Myrtle Beach in january thieves broke the back window of my new car . They took my gps and my sirius radio. I always wanted an indash unit but could not afford it. When i went shopping i saw the clarion nx404 at a price way below Pioneer and Kenwood. I was lost for directions as i am from Canada. I decided to give it a try. What an awsome unit.

Pros: My car is complete with the 404 , just input a phone number and the clarion takes you there. Quick and accurate. My samsung phone links up to the clarion quickly and flawlessly. I can play my memory stick , cds , dvds , stream from my phone , its unlimited. I got back to Canada without a hitch.

Cons: If i had one complaint it would be the reception on fm , it seems weak. Could be the install but the gps is fine , i will look into it. Small price to pay for this awsome machine. Would i recommend this yes its fantastic.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio has some nice features and a very clear screen. I installed a rear view camera to this radio and the picture is very clear to see while backing up. The options on this radio are great. Synchronizing your cellular phone with the hands free works terrific. Very clear on both ends of the phone call. I would recommend this radio to anyone. The installation kit was exactly what we needed to install the unit. The hardest part of the installation for me was running the wire for the rear camera to the radio.

Pros: Everything at your finger tips and easy to jump from one screen to another.

Cons: GPS takes some getting used to. You really need to read the book to us this part of the radio. It is always telling you the speed when you go over the speed limit. It has a way of turning this function off, but you need to read the book to accomplish this.

Great stereo/navigation and lots of options. All the wiring diagrams were wrong and my third call to support got me the Honda Schematic. Colors did not match up, but the pin numbers worked. I also got all the wiring adapters available, but my rear DVD player was disconnected and no simple fix was available. I had to send it back.

Pros: Once installed it works great. Easy to learn icons and features. I really liked the touchscreen.

Cons: It was a whole day project to get the wiring right, but I lost the use of my rear DVD player. The Nav system has a woman named Susan who wouldn't shut from telling me when I exceeded the speed limit. I turned off the volume in the Nav settings, but it would turn back on when the vehicle was restarted.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system is very nice, but has bluetooth issues (even with the latest firmware installed). I've tested it with two Droid DNA's and an LG G3, all running Android 4.4.2 (latest), all with media+phone audio enabled. The phones pair correctly, but then have issues streaming music (from any app) and will not play phone audio. All of these phones work perfectly paired to our OEM 8.4" 2014 Durango Uconnect / Bluetooth Speakers, etc. I'm hoping Android 5.0 (which is yet to be released and won't be available for Droid DNA's) resolves this issue. Please note Clarion has Bluetooth compatibility pages that show the DNA and other Droid phones as compatible, but no one seems to be able to get them to fully work.

Pros: Nice screen, love the GPS, sounds better than OEM unit, steering wheel integration is fantastic, nice that you can color match the controls to your interior, Crutchfield was very helpful with install and suggested all the correct parts.

    Cons: Poor Android bluetooth compatibility

A very solid unit that hits all the right marks.

    2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this receiver in my 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and added both the PAC MS-FRDS interface so I could still use the Ford Sync and the Clarion backup camera (CC510). My original thinking was that I wanted a backup camera - but that was a slippery slope and led to the whole new system replacing the original Ford head unit (which did not have navigation). Boy am I happy with the upgrade. The Clarion is a very nice system with a large display and easy to navigate controls. Since I prefer the Ford Sync phone controls I simply setup the Bluetooth on my phone so that Sync is exclusive to the phone functions and Clarion has access to the media and Pandora. I routed the usb cables for iPhone and Android phone hookups to the glovebox so they are out of sight and out of the way. The touch screen is very easy to use and only creates a minimal distraction. Being able to still use Ford Sync and steering wheel controls really ties everything together and makes it all "feel" factory. I would strongly recommend adding the additional accessories to allow for the steering wheel control integration and the Ford Sync - even if you have no plan to use them, just having that as another option is very nice.

Pros: Adding the right accessories recommended by Crutchfield complete the system and make for a more enjoyable experience. Clarion has a very solid interface that is easy to navigate and the Pandora integration is a very nice option if you use that service. The large screen is a plus especially with the navigation. The voice reminders that you are exceeding the speed limit might be annoying to some people but can be turned off, I actually appreciate the reminder and don't think they are obtrusive.

Cons: The CD player does seem a little slow to start playing. Since this is a fresh install and I havent lived with it too long I don't have many CONS to list. Overall, for the price point I think this is an excellent unit. I would certainly recommend including Crutchfield's recommended accessories to fully integrate the system to your vehicle.

I have gone through 3 of these in the past 6 months. The engineering is obviously shoddy. First one- cd/dvd player wouldnt read. No problem, it happens. Returned it for replacement. Second one, after a few months, the navigation crashed. Brought a windows based error dialog box and then was never able to load. Customer service said if that windows box shows up, the hard drive is damaged. Fine, return it for a third unit. Third unit, upon initial installation: navigation doesnt work, touch screen barely works, Settings menu is unreachable. This thing as obviously garbage. Dont waste you time or money. Get a better unit.

    2009 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose the Clarion because it was one of the least expensive units with a built in GPS plus many other great features. I originally figured I could save a few bucks by getting one of the so-called "app radios" and use Waze or Google Maps but reconsidered when read some of the reviews. The problem is some of the interfaces are wonky and you often need proprietary cables which can add another $100. Plus you're then married to Apple/Android/etc. The Clarion worked fine out of the box. GPS seems great so far (why is it that the factory installed GPS systems cost $1800 and suck??). A nice plus is if you don't connect the brown pulse wire you (or your passenger) can use the GPS when driving. Another nice surprise is, at least with my iPhone 5, I can connect via bluetooth for Pandora and iTunes Radio. The head unit even displays artwork and song titles without the cable (USB) connection to the phone. The user interface is a bit busy but not obnoxious. Not yet sure how good the phone function works. Used it only a few times so far- my contacts synced to the Clarion right away, sound seems fair. I connected the (free) ext'l mike provided by Crutchfield which is supposed to be better than the int'l mike. Installation was as expected- no surprises. But the user manual with the Clarion is horrible, barely written in English and the important wiring diagram is too tiny to see without magnification. However, using the WONDERFUL Crutchfield tech service, everything was fine.

Pros: Price, included GPS, good looking unit, sharp graphics, bluetooth connection for some phone apps, relatively easy install with the recommended wiring harness and adapters

Cons: Poor user manual, no radio data display or HD radio, busy home screen, no voice control

    Branden from Connecticut on 9/4/2014

Notes: -1 USB is for Iphones and 1 USB is for windows phones / usb sticks only. -You can not change songs while in navigation like the old NX's, you have to hit th Nav button to switch to the other source real quick -Grounding the e-brake cable to bypass wont work without a toggle switch or aftermarket work-a-round -To import a custom image for wallpaper it must be 800 x 480 or smaller and a jpeg (not explained in manual) -Does work with an Iphone 5s and IOS7 flawlessly Overall a GREAT unit for the price, it does its job well, its fast, easy to use, and good looking. I haven't installed a backup camera yet, or a video bypass but I will and will edit the update accordingly.

Pros: Easy to use big easy to read buttons (on touch screen) Easily Customizable - all icons, placement, shortcuts, map features, voices you name it. Great Audio - not the best but very good for unit that does this much. Tons of inputs to choose from Super fast response to touch - Lag noticed switching from pandora, to nav to settings, to phone -phone controls are much better than previous clarion units -separate volume knob, I hate touch screen for volume

Cons: 1 usb for Iphone 1 for Windows? why not make them both universal...? could use more equalizer adjustments not just 3 band... the manual doesnt explain things like importing images. or video and what format they need to be in

This unit was just installed yesterday so I am still learning how to use it... but.... this website says that this unit DOES NOT fit my 2008 Saturn Sky (without Monsoon sound system)...... IT DOES!!!. Crutchfield is potentially missing out on alot of business with this wrong information. This is an AWESOME radio. My friend who installed it loves it and now he wants one. Having a slight problem pairing one of my phones. Most of the time the unit and the phone can't find each other and when they do the phone says that it is unable to communicate with the NX404. Still working with it so I may be in a bad cell area so I will give it a chance before I take off points.

Pros: Has "most" everything one needs in a single head unit.

Cons: reason for 4 stars :No voice control, no front facing USB. Also, the METRA dash kit included with the unit was NOT the greatest one for this application. Amazing in-dash!!

Jeremy from Greenville NC on 3/7/2014

The NX404 has broken the mold for in-dash multimedia. GPS has over 11,000,000 points of interest regardless of WiFi access or current location, and it's very easy to use. The multimedia functions go above and beyond the rest. You can plug in your phone (while stationary, of course) and watch your movies or look at pictures in ultra clear HD. Being a musician, the audio on this unit really stood out. You wouldn't expect such high quality sound with so many features on the NX404, but it also goes above and beyond. 3 band equalizer, sub woofer input, and a wide array of options make this THE one for automobile multimedia. You can also change the color of the lights to match your vehicles perfectly! The NX404 is the only one I would recommend to anyone! Get it while you can!

    Pros: Everything!

Cons: I wish the price were a little lower, but it's worth every penny!

Was looking for a in-dash tv for my car that was going to make the most out of my iphone 5s. Was looking at jvc and pioneer before I came across this. Wow I am so glad I found this head unit before i purchased any of the others. The gps is really stunning, accurate and easy to use with many features. Was planning on using mirror link and waze with other head units, glad I didn't go that route. The display on this is amazing also with cool menus you can swipe through. This head unit will do everything you could possibly want and sounds great. It's way faster then my previous kenwood. It's not hard to tell why this unit won the ces engineering 2014 award. Well worth the little extra you pay compared to other models with mirror link only.

Pros: Blutooth picks up everytime, no problem. Great screen and menues. Able to do everything you could want at a great price.

Cons: Very little. Found out the front micro sd slot is only for the gps, but will be easy to upgrade. Doesn't have the best equalizer if you want to customize every detail, but will be good for most people.

6.2" Touchscreen TFT Display: The Clarion NX404 has an integrated 6.2" TFT widescreen display with touchscreen controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 (RGB) and 1,152,000 total pixels. The unit's touchscreen panel features interactive controls making menu navigation easy.

    • Touchscreen GUI w/ Flick Control: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. The NX404 touchscreen responds to your finger gestures just as your smartphone screen would. You are able to drag & drop icons into different positions to customize the screen. The touchscreen also supports flick operation, so you can quickly scroll to another menu page.
    • Short Cut Menu: The unit has a main menu for using all functions and a shortcut menu that groups together frequently used functions. Use of the shortcut menu allows you to quickly access frequently used functions Up to five frequently used functions can be registered to the shortcut menu.
    • Dimmer & Brightness Control: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate. You can also manually adjust the unit's Day & Night display brightness from 0-20.
    • Variable Button Illumination (728 colors): Since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touchscreen, there are only four physical buttons (including a rotary dial) on the unit for the most basic and commonly-used functions. You can set the head unit's button illumination to 1 of 9 preset colors or have the unit scan through all the preset colors. You can also select three custom user colors by adjusting red, green, and blue values.

Start Up Time: The NX404 has a start up time of approximately 29.75 seconds from Off to the Map Screen.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus. Video can only displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you try to view video with the vehicle in motion, the head unit will simply display "CAUTION! Video is disabled for your safety".

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion NX404 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory radio brackets and the supplied hardware. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the NX404 in a custom 4" opening. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

    Onboard Navigation

Navigation Mapping Software: The map database (by TomTom) used by the Clarion NX404 was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection. Navigation data is stored on the unit's preloaded 8GB microSD-card for quick access and response. The NX404 provides map coverage of the United States (all 50 states), Canada, and Puerto Rico. The NX404's integrated Clarion Mobile Map navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: It is easy to keep the navigation system up to date via and your Windows PC (XP and newer). Simply download new map data from Clarion's portal site (, store the updated map data on a microSD card and insert it into the Clarion NX404 via the front-panel microSD card slot. You have 30 days from purchase to download the latest available map free of charge.

GPS (Global Position System): Clarion's built-in navigation helps you find your way to your destination with an integrated GPS receiver & external GPS antenna. The Clarion NX404 features a built-in SiRF GPS receiver and includes a GPS antenna which can be mounted on the dash with the included 3M tape or outside the vehicle on a flat magnetic surface. The NX404 uses Global Position System (GPS) satellites, and a digital roadway map database to calculate and display vehicle positioning and travel direction. The NX404 considers vehicle speed an heading changes, together with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on a digital map. Signal from GPS satellites are used to determine the vehicle location. Three (good) or four (best) satellites must be receive to accurately determine location. This unit does not transmit your GPS position, so others cannot track you.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (an magenta line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Clarion NX404 allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Clarion NX404's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits. Services are listed under the following categories - Gas, Food, Lodging, and Restrooms. You must be on a major highway or road to use this feature.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Tunnel View: When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.

Audible Alerts: The Clarion NX404 offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance: In addition to graphic directions, the NX404 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can select from English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese audible languages. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The NX404 provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Note:The unit will mute the audio of the other sources during navigation voice-prompts.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for POIs and emergency assistance nearby.

Find Menu: The Find Menu gives you many different ways to choose your destination or insert a waypoint in your current route. An on-screen keyboard appears to allow you to enter your destination from one of the following categories:

    Destination Search Description
Find on Map Search for a destination by scrolling the map display.
Combined Search You can enter search keywords to find addresses, favorite places, recent destination, and POIs.
Home Store and easily recall your home address.

Coordinates Enter geographic coordinates (latitude & longitude).

Route Calculation: The Clarion NX404 calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Green: gives a quick, but full efficient route based on the fuel consumption data you provide
      • Economical: combines the benefits of Fast and Short; calculates as if it were calculating the Fast route, but it takes other roads as well to save fuel
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.
Note: You can select "Route Alternative" to see the turn-list and map screen of three routes with the selected route planning parameters, giving you the option to select which route to take.

Vehicle Profile: You can create a vehicle profile for your car, truck, or SUV. Enter the following parameters for your vehicle - Fuel Consumption (avg. fuel consumption of your vehicle in city and rural areas), Engine Type (engine and fuel type), Fuel Price (avg. fuel price for travel cost calculation), Max Speed (max speed you travel), Weight, and Dimensions (length x width x height).

My Route: "My Route" displays the route parameters and the calculated route in its full length on the map. You can also perform route-related actions such as editing or canceling your route, setting a start point for the route, picking route alternatives, avoiding parts of the route, simulating navigation or adding the destination to your Favorites.

Modifying A Route: When navigation is already started, there are several ways to modify the active route. You can edit the route by modifying the list of destinations and waypoints. You can add or remove destinations (waypoints), modify the start position or reorder the list. You'll be able to create a brand new route, add intermediate destinations (waypoints), and modify the final destination. Or, you can simply cancel your active route.

Trip Monitor: The Trip Monitor contains useful information about your trip. This information can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip log data includes; Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Automatic Route Recalculation: The unit will automatically recalculate your route if you stray from the navigation unit's previously calculated route.

Off-Road Navigation: The difference between the on-road and off-road modes is the navigation itself. When you are on the Map screen with an off-road route, your position and heading is not aligned with the nearest road and there is no turn by turn navigation; just a recommended direction. You see a straight line drawn between your current position and the next destination to reach. The Turn Preview field in the top left corner shows an arrow with your bearing and the distance of the next destination.

Quick Menu: The Quick Menu is a selection of controls and functions that are frequently needed during navigation. It can be opened directly from the Map screen by tapping Quick Menu icon. You can customize which controls and functions are accessible through the Quick Menu.

Calculator & Unit Converter: The calculator allows you to perform simple arithmetic. The Unit Converter converts distance, speed, area, currency, temperature, volume, and weight.

    Audio/Video Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and high linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion NX404 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)
Note: The power specifications for the NX404 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/2V RCA Output + Sub Level Control: The Clarion NX404 features 6ch/2V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear/Sub). The non-fading subwoofer preamp output features an independent level control (0-14) and phase adjustment (normal/reverse).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion NX404 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

    • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
    • High-Pass Filter: The NX404 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the head unit.

BeatEQ: BeatEQ lets you tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience. The Clarion navigation receiver provides 4 preset EQ curves (Bass Boost, Impact, Excite, Off) and 1 custom EQ curve. Bass Boost emphasizes the bass portion of your music; Impact emphasizes the bass & treble portions of your music; Excite emphasizes bass, midrange & treble portions of your music; while Flat sets the bass, midrange, & treble to 0. The Custom EQ lets you freely customize the frequency, Q-factor, and level of the bass, midrange, & treble.

BeatEQ (Custom Mode) Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 50Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz 0.7, 1, 1.4, 2.0 -7 to + 7 dB
    Midrange 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz
    Treble 5kHz, 10kHz, 15kHz
Note: BeatEQ settings are applied to all sources.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Audio/Video Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The Clarion NX404 is equipped with AV input terminals on the front and rear of the unit to enable enjoyment of content from an external connected source. The rear composite video/stereo RCA inputs are ideal for permanent installations, while the front AV mini-jack (3.5mm) input will come in handy for quick connection of a portable audio/visual source.

HDMI/MHL Input: In addition to iPhone and Android connectivity, the head unit's HDMI/MHL input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device.

Audio/Video Output (with Dual Zone): The NX404 features a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA audio output that allows you to connect an external display and headphone system in the rear of your vehicle. You can playback audio/video content from a Disc, iPod/iPhone, or AV 1/2 Input on a rear-seat monitor system; while viewing a different or the same audio/video source on the navigation receiver's touchscreen monitor.

Camera Input: The Camera Input consists of a Composite video RCA jack for connecting an optional rear-view back-up camera (such as the 020CC510, sold separately). This RCA input enables you to connect a rear-view camera to display the area behind your vehicle. The increased view encourages and facilitates safer driving. When an optional rearview camera is connected to this unit, the rear view image is displayed on the screen when your vehicle is placed in reverse gear (purple/white wire of harness must be connected to reverse light wire of vehicle). Automatic video switching takes approximately 2.75 seconds.

Note: Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: In addition to the unit's touchscreen and hard-key controls, the NX404 comes supplied with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the navigation receiver and your connected devices. The remote control operates off of a single CR2025 Lithium-cell 3V battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Intuitive display with lots of media options

Written by Dominic DeVito, Staff Writer - Creative, on 3/24/2014 3:38:00 PM

Clarion's NX404 starts things off right with a very intuitive interface on its 6.2" display. Some double-DIN (4" tall) touchscreen receivers are a little crazy with their menus, but the NX404 keeps things simple with big panels for sources/functions, and sideways swiping for switching between screens. The graphics for choosing sources couldn't be easier to follow, which is nice for so many options (disc audio & video, phone, 2 auxiliary inputs, camera, USB, HDMI, Bluetooth audio, navigation, etc.).

There's also a sturdy knob on the left side of the receiver's face for controlling the volume, plus a dedicated button for navigation/AV switching and another for the main menu. The two USB connections on the rear come with plenty long cables, and the front panel offers an SD card slot (for mapping only - no audio) and an aux input.

Beyond initial impressions, the receiver was a pleasure to use. The Bluetooth pairing happened quickly with my iPhone 5, and I was able to pull up songs quickly from the phone, including album/artist/title info on the receiver's display. Playback through disc (both songs and MP3 files), iPod wired connection, DVD video, thumb drive, and Pandora (through wired phone connection) were all pretty much flawless. It took about 2 seconds for the receiver to pull up different album artwork upon track changes, but that's a minor quibble.

The navigation function was very realistic-looking and showed a lot of information onscreen, including points of interest like gas stations, travel hubs, and landmark names. Lane guidance and highway signs for upcoming turns are nothing new but still appreciated. On the right-hand side of the nav screen was a continuously updated log of distance remaining and time left to destination, plus estimated arrival time. The the clear feminine voice of the vocal prompts was easy to follow, with mostly accurate pronunciation on the street names.

I did not attempt any Android functions or to use the HDMI input in any capacity, so I cannot comment on them.

The only suggestion I can make here is to check the location of your microphone, I have mine placed right above the steering wheel centered in the instrument cluster.. and I haven't had any complaints from those I have conversed with on poor sound quality. [ Frank  Mar 27, 2015 ]

There are 12 basic colors but there is also a screen where you can select an infinite number of colors. So Yes, you should be able to match the backlight color to anything. [ ROBERT  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Where the power button is and navigation on the left side of the unit, I made my background color red to match the rest of the lighting in my car. [ Sue Nan  Mar 16, 2015 ]
You can customize the the color. [ Bernard  Mar 16, 2015 ]
I seldom drive at night and at this point I have not addressed this issue. [ DANIEL  Mar 16, 2015 ]
You can match it to nearly any color you want every color is fully editable from light to dark. [ Rich  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Yes, you can match to any color. It uses the GUI to create a color if the presets dont work out for you. [ Sergio  Mar 16, 2015 ]
There is about 20 colors to choose from light blue green white dark blue and so on it should match any color that your car panel has [ trevor  Mar 16, 2015 ]
The NX404 has a settings option that allows you to best match the illuminated color of the function buttons. Though not a 100% match to my dash lighting, it's closer than any other unit I've owned and the fact that you can customize the colors at all it pretty slick. Standard colors are simple since they have a ton of preset ones, but my orange lighting on the dash was a toughy, but doable, I'm happy with it. [ Minesh  Mar 16, 2015 ]
There are 12 presets, 3 custom slots and upon selecting a preset you can initialize a "scan" through that colors hue. Which is what I had to do to accomplish the red-orange I have to match the Juke's dials. Some of the colors seem to be way off. If you choose to customize it, better stay away from white, its easy to make, sure, set the red, blue and green to 255. Sadly, you get yellow. Its better to scan through the colors unfortunately, Clarion made this difficult as well. At first, I thought scan would scan through which ever color sample you select, when it goes through the hue or rainbow within the color selection it moves onto the next color selection. It really is the most horrible and idiotic color selection I can think of. If you are too slow at hitting initialize, you will miss the color you want. There are a lot of flaws with this radio. [ tasattack  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Over 700 colors to choose from. Can match almost anything. [ ian  Mar 16, 2015 ]

Navigation works great... not sure what the question is about the greyed out. [ Matthew  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Greyed out is unseletable. Cant set or adjust time. Mine adjusted time when paired. As for the navigation being greyed out. My guess the maps sd isnt inserted or isnt properly inserted. [ Tracy  Mar 13, 2015 ]
Unit didn't work with my car Return never used it Sorry I can't help on this question Bought on in the pass it was a very good unit [ James  Mar 13, 2015 ]
Some features are unavailable while in drive. Try accessing them with your car in park. [ Edward  Mar 13, 2015 ]
The Time selection in settings will be grayed out because the selection is made to automatically set the time from GPS time. I would guess that the navigation button is not available because either the micro SD card is not inserted or corrupt. Make sure you get the system updates and insert the micro SD in the correct direction. [ Adrian  Mar 13, 2015 ]
I like my Clarion 404 in the '91 Corvette. Unfortunately I have not used the navigation controls yet so I don't have experience to answer your question. Marc [ Marc  Mar 13, 2015 ]
You need to hook up GPS antenna correctly. [ JEREME D  Mar 13, 2015 ]
It will be like that until you set up your navigation. It then syncs the time automatically. I dont think you can adjust it. All I did was take the navigation card out and put it back in. It then took me through and did everything. [ JESUS  Mar 13, 2015 ]
I didn't have that issue and I have no idea. Good luck though [ John  Mar 13, 2015 ]

Good question not really sure though I do know in the GPS mode it does tell you your speed. If there is a way to see it all the time not sure but the radio is great I like it a lot the Bluetooth is awesome you'll be happy with the purchase especially for the price. [ PAUL  Mar 27, 2015 ]
The GPS DOES show speed. [ Derek  Mar 13, 2015 ]
There is not a full speedo function but if you leave the nav screen up it displays speed down in the bottom corner. Im 62 so it is hard for me to read without reading glasses but it would function well for a younger person. I am very happy with the stereo, it sounds good and I like the display. Only complaint is I have recorded a bunch of mp3s on a dvd disc and it is a little slow to load up and begin playing. I would recommend this unit to buy, good price for a lot of features. Hope this helps. [ ed  Mar 06, 2015 ]
Yes sir there is. It will even let you know when you are speeding by voice or color. You can adjust that setting. Very happy with this unit. [ Kevin  Mar 05, 2015 ]
No, just a warning when you go over speed limit. [ Donald  Mar 05, 2015 ]
Yes it shows your speed on the navigation screen. [ David  Mar 05, 2015 ]
Yes it shows your current speed [ FRANKIE  Mar 05, 2015 ]
    I haven't actually installed mine yet [ mike  Mar 05, 2015 ]
Yes it has a visible speedometer and speed limit warning feature. [ colorado race  Mar 05, 2015 ]
Our remote worked fine, but the radio had other bugs. You could ask a tech at Crutchfield about trying the reset. Their is a small reset under the cover, beneath the volume knob. You will need a paperclip to reset it. That fixed some things for me. I also found out after many calls their is a firmware update. [ JAMES  Mar 02, 2015 ]

Mine was telling me well ahead of time (a mile or two) and then as I got closer. Keep in mind that it does not give street names, only "turn right", "turn left" etc.... [ jack  Mar 07, 2015 ]
It starts telling you at 1000 feet and restates the distance at 500 then 200 then next turn turn left or right as needed to reach your destination. It will tell you when you are speeding if you do not turn off this feature. Hope this helps [ Maria  Mar 01, 2015 ]
Yes. On the freeway, it does announce 2 miles ahead, 1/4 mile ahead, and there is a ding at the point of interchange. On local roads, it will announce the next instruction after the current instruction, if it is within quarter mile. If anything, I found it over-announced and quite annoying. [ Andrew  Feb 27, 2015 ]
No it is loded with the most current maps when you buy it and you haft to update it by purchasing an updated map package every year.... also this radio is not xm radio ready [ Ryan  Feb 20, 2015 ]
No, the navigation just needs to receive the GPS signal, which is "free" (your tax dollars ACTUALLY at work). However, the maps and points of interest information are stored inside the unit, and if you don't update the database then your maps, just like paper maps, won't keep up with the changes in roads and business locations and eventually, especially if you live in an area with lots of construction, the navigation becomes less useful. I expect to buy a database update every few years. You get one free database download within a certain time of buying the unit (60 days, I think) and you have to install an application on a computer with an SD slot to get that. BTW that application only runs on Windows or Mac, not Linux. [ ALLEN  Feb 20, 2015 ]
No, the navigation system comes with the unit. No extra purchase needed [ Jennifer  Feb 19, 2015 ]
No. Its part of the unit. Updates are available on clarion's website. [ CHRISTOPHER  Feb 19, 2015 ]
The unit comes with US maps and you can purchase additional locations and updates from Clarion. The NX404 comes with an 8 GB micro sd card for map data. [ Gene  Feb 19, 2015 ]
The only thing is you'll have to purchase are the map update [ MARK  Feb 19, 2015 ]
No the navigation feature is included. That is not a separate subscription. [ TIMOTHY  Feb 19, 2015 ]
No - the navigation is pre-loaded into the radio. [ Kyle  Feb 19, 2015 ]
There is a connector for Sirius reciever in the back of this unit although you may or may not need an adapter. If you download the manual from the Clarion (be sure to get the right model number of the unit you want to purchase) web site you can look at the devices that can be connected to this unit and judge for yourself if it meets your requirments. [ MICHAEL  Feb 14, 2015 ]
Bluetooth doesn't work .. I have problems with it more then not [ Raquel  Feb 06, 2015 ]
No it does not. Mine is set up wireless. [ Bradley  Feb 05, 2015 ]

It works great, and it does what it claims. I installed it myself without a problem. If you want higher integration with iPhone, perhaps the next level from the x404 wil work better, more expensive, however. [ DAVID  Jan 12, 2015 ]
    I am sorry, but I do not know. [ JOSEPH  Dec 27, 2014 ]
I have a 2009 Honda Odyssey and there was no easy way to connect the mid DVD player. It connected through the stock stereo. The Crutchfield reps that I spoke with said that I would have to figure out the wiring and rewire the mid DVD separately on my own. I went back to stock and still use my phone for GPS. [ JAMES  Dec 27, 2014 ]
The NX404 is not XM ready. You can use one of the AUX inputs to add XM or upgrade to the NX604. [ Gene  Dec 27, 2014 ]
No, you would need the NX604 for satellite radio. [ Gene  Dec 26, 2014 ]
    I don't use xm radio. [ Eric  Dec 26, 2014 ]
I don't believe so. However the map of the navi is much better than google. [ MICHAEL  Dec 16, 2014 ]
Not really sure to be honest but I don't know why you would want to use Google maps when it already has a built in GPS that works very well. Probably one of the best GPS units I've had. I had a Tom Tom before I got the head unit. [ KYLE  Dec 16, 2014 ]

I purchased a sony xav701hd from crutchfield and am now ready to give up on it. My Samsung phone never was able to be mirrowed. I even downgraded from the S5 to the S3 following Sony's instructions. Doesn't work. Now I'm interested in the clarion. Will it mirrow my Samsung S3? It had kitkat 4.4. Or my S5, with 4.4 as well. Anyone? And does the navigation inform the driver of speed cameras and red light cameras? ???? [ jimv21  Jan 11, 2015 ]

OK I found your answer. You need to change the voice setting to "TTS Voice: These computed voices can tell you complex instructions, they can tell you the street names or read out the system messages for you." The natural voice - although better than the TTS voice will NOT give you turn by turn street name audio. My setting was TTS not natural out of the box that is why my unit stated street names and not "turn in 50 feet" type generic nav audio. The fix is simple, just change that setting to one of the first few voices and you are good. If you look under the voice name it will tell you "natural voice" or TTS - select TTS and you're off!! Good luck, Bill [ WILLIAM  Apr 19, 2014 ]
My NX announces street names, it did it by default. However, did you UPDATE the navigation unit via the website? You have 30 days from the purchase date to do so - that MAY be your issue. When I updated my unit it gave me more 3D options, a map and speed traffic cams. But again the text to speech was there from day one for me - you may just need to update the unit. Take out the MINI SD chip that come with the unit, the insert it in your computer via the mini SD slot or adapter (that you buy). Then download the Naviextras update utility at (naviextras DOT com) and install it. Once it's installed and the Mini SD card is in your computer the program will see the card and tell you what is available for your NX404. The program will not work with any other SD card. SO back up the entire thing in-case that card goes bad - just sayin. When you are in the update program go to the FREE UPDATES section on the left. Do this first and get the one's you need. Should have traffic cams, new maps and so on, possibly some 3D options. Then re-install the SD CARD back into the front of the system and reset the unit back to FACTORY DEFAULT setting and try it again. When all of that is done start-er up and see what happens. That could most likely get you where you need to be. Good Luck [ WILLIAM  Apr 15, 2014 ]
