Our take on the Clarion NX603

Clarion's NX603 navigation receiver does much more than provide directions, play media, and let you access your phone on the go — it also puts you in touch with a wealth of road-friendly apps through Clarion's Smart Access platform, which utilizes the cloud to keep you in touch with the world outside. All you need is a smartphone and the Smart Access app to enjoy real-time connectivity to social media, news, your calendar, and more.

Clarion NX603 navigation receiver

Convenient cloud connection

Clarion's NX603 navigation receiver does much more than provide directions, play media, and let you access your phone on the go — it also puts you in touch with a wealth of road-friendly apps through Clarion's Smart Access platform, which utilizes the cloud to keep you in touch with the world outside. All you need is a smartphone and the Smart Access app to enjoy real-time connectivity to social media, news, your calendar, and more.

The Smart Access app is your key

When you download Clarion's free Smart Access app to your phone, you'll have access to several apps that work within the Smart Access ecosystem. Connect your phone to the NX603, and you'll get fingertip control over those apps through the receiver's screen. You can employ Smart Access through your iPhone® 4 or 4S using an optional Clarion cable, or take advantage of Smart Access through your Android™ phone with an optional HDMI cable or micro-HDMI cable.

Apps for social media, streaming audio, GPS navigation, traffic, and more are currently available (see below), and most require no additional charges to use them. As more apps are added to the Smart Access platform, Clarion automatically updates the Smart Access app, so you'll gain more functionality without having to do anything. And you can choose which apps you see on the receiver's main menu screen, for easy access on the go.

Apps for everyday use

Apps you can currently use through Smart Access and the NX603 include:
• Social media like Facebook and Twitter (iPhone® only)
• Traffic by INRIX and Waze
• Internet radio: Pandora® (iPhone only), iHeartRadio, and TuneIn Radio
• Personal: email, calendar, news, and weather

The NX603 also works with MirrorLink™, which is available for select smartphones and allows the stereo to "mirror" your smartphone's display in a safe manner — see our article on MirrorLink for more info.

Clarion NX603 navigation receiver

Impressive, intuitive navigation

The Clarion NX603 navigation receiver offers an easy-to-use 6.2" display. The touchscreen works like most modern smartphones, with pinch-to-zoom capability so you can see things more clearly. You can also “flick” your way through the menu screens to find the operation you need quickly. The built-in GPS system covers all 50 states plus Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and offers more than 11 million points of interest. Plus you'll get 3D landmarks and buildings in select cities, speed limit warnings, lane guidance, and realistic views of some complicated intersections.

Bluetooth® connectivity and beyond

The Clarion NX603 plays both CDs and DVDs, and offers Bluetooth for hands-free calling and wireless music streaming through your compatible phone. You can also add music sources through the front auxiliary input or microSD™ card slot, and even enjoy SiriusXM satellite radio programming with an optional tuner and a subscription.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Endless Boot Loop

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product back in 2014, and it worked okay. It did not integrate well with our iPhones, but the navigation worked great. The about 18 months after we purchased the unit, it would randomly say "GPS signal lost." After a few seconds the signal would come back. This went on for about a month, now the unit will only complete a startup and then after 30-45 seconds it restarts. I was able to download and update the software from the Clarion website, but that did not work. At this point, I bought the unit to use for 18 months and now it is nothing more than a paper weight. I would not recommend it at all.

    no support

Dave G from Mandeville, LA on 2/9/2015

Very difficult to set up. The smart access says it is not released in the USA and does not really work in any case. I got a Note 4 for Xmas and the bluetooth will not connect. Crutchfield has nothing about an issue and Clarion phone is just a cycle with no real person to connect with to trouble shoot my problem. I love the Navy but because I can't get support and they did false advertising about the smart access I will never by a Clarion steroids again. Waste of a money.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent Crutchfield service as always. Installed unit myself on a 98 Explorer with no issues. Everything works as advertised. Very happy that I made this purchase at a very good price.

Pros: Free adapters and good instructions made installation quite easy. So far all of the mapping and driving directions have been very accurate. Enjoy the music of over a hundred albums that I transferred to a micro SD card

Cons: Was not able to update an available software update from Clarion, After a couple of phone calls to Clarion they recommended taking unit to a local service center. Not going to bother with that.

Easy install, great product. I had no trouble installing this head unit, everything that Crutchfield helps you with makes it so easy.

    Pros: Installing the unit.

Cons: My smart access does not seem to work, also the video function will not work unless you connect the wire correctly.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

everything worked as indicated, however... sound was adequate, not note worthy considering the cost. A great system for the average listener, who wants all the bells and whistles....where nav, bluetooth, conectivity is main concern, and is satisfied with average sound quality provided with system at this cost level .

    Pros: lots of opptions !

Cons: some what limited sound scope !

    smart app does not work

Dave Golenor from Mandeville, LA on 7/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got a new system because my old system would not integrate the Bluetooth with my music. This on does and I like the navigation system better than the Kenwood DNX6960. However you do have to use dash mount gps locator instead of the one mounted outside my truck. The stereo talks about a app you can down look on you adroid to run your phone through an hdmi cable. It does not work so traffic info and thing like that are off the table. Clarion is fortunate because installing their product screwed up my elctrical and it has taken me a month to get it fixed. So I am stuck with this system as long as I own my truck because I will never go through that again.

    Pros: Bluetooth and and navigation

    Cons: Everything else

Great product, I bought it for mainly the gps. Does a great job at it although it did take a few days to figure it all out. Not the stereos fault though.

    Pros: Gps, hands free phone.

Cons: Could be a bit brighter, hard to see screen with sunglasses on.

    2006 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in a 2006 Ford F-150 4 door Crew cab W/O factory subwoofer. I received the wire adapter harness for my vehicle which made wiring a breeze and also ordered the backup camera cable to install a backup camera. The NAV antenna was the only issue I found installing it was were on the dash to locate it. The instruction say so far from unit and from windshield. I ended coming up through defroster vent on dash and stuck it a couple inches from windshield and it seems to work fine. Learning all the functions was a chore because the unit has quite a few options. The radio portion works great and gives plenty of options to save stations. I tested NAV system from home to my work to verify how well it performed. Could be operator error in setting up but didn't care for the route it gave me so I kept driving my normal route and it kept trying to re-route me at ever intersection. Did a second test knowing sort of where I was going and it still had issue getting me where I needed to go. Will continue playing with settings hopefully I get a handle on it. Bluetooth worked well with pairing my phone which is a Samsung Galaxy S3 to make calls and receive them. The software did need an update which went well as described once I got a mini SD card. Also downloaded music to card in which played well through SD card. CD/DVD player worked as advertised. Pandora worked through Bluetooth after I did the successful software update.

    Pros: See review

    Cons: Smart Access

THE Deal on a touchscreen GPS

David L from CA Central Valley on 6/24/2014

    2005 Subaru Impreza WRX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is such a great deal. Loaded with features. The GPS is so handy. I've used a little portable Garmin Nuvi for years and it's so nice to just have it built in. The built in GPS is easier to deal with than my Garmin too. Installation is simple, as it's modular, with one big plug for the main harness, a set of plugs for preamp outs that you don't need to use if you aren't using amps, same for the video in lines, USB, and HDMI. The GPS antenna was plenty long to run out to the passenger side dash top. The touch screen apps are easy to use too. I really like the Bluetooth feature, being able to just have it auto sync to my phone and play my music from that is soooo worth it. I saw other reviews complain about it, and the smart access app, but I've really only done music, and I have an iPhone 4. No problem yet. One of my only qualms is that it doesn't have voice control. My wife's newer Chrysler has it and it's nice when you want to place a call, but definitely not a deal breaker. It also took a fair bit of tweaking with the equalization until I was happy with it. But once I had my sub at the right level, the equalization was awesome. It has a sub preamp control that you can edit easily on the touch screen, so you can set your gain once, and then fine tune it on the screen. The low pass filter for the amp only goes to 120 though, and I would have rather had 150hz. It has a pretty slow boot up, but not terrible.

Pros: Awesome value, easy modular installation options, great gps, easy Bluetooth for an iPhone

Cons: no voice control, equalization was a touch difficult, low pass filter could go higher, slow-ish boot up

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this was my first install in many years, all went great. The adapter and directions were right on point. The direction for the radio antenna need to be improved, I had to remove radio twice to get radio station. I have only had the radio for 3 days, but so far so good. It has the slow boot up that others have complained about, but other than that I like the radio. 5 day rating.

Pros: Nice radio, didn't understand directions for radio antenna at first. In the end I got it working

    Cons: slow boot-up

    Awesome navigation

    2004 Toyota RAV4
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the NX603 for my daughter's 2004 Rav4 and I am so impressed with it that I want one for my own car! The Bluetooth works awesome with her iPhone 5s for streaming music and taking hands free phone calls. I have used several different navigation systems in my day and this one is the best yet. You can choose from 3D or 2D display and I love how all of the gas stations show up as little icons of their logo on the map so you can always see when the next Chevron is coming up. It even warns you when you are going over the speed limit! VERY COOL! My only gripe is that the speed limit is only displayed when you have a course navigated. It's not displayed when viewing the map while driving.

Pros: Bluetooth works seamlessly. Good sound. The best navigation system ever.

Cons: speed limit is only displayed when you have a course navigated. This radio doesn't fit in either of my other vehicles! LOL

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2005 C230 Mercedes. Was a tight fit with all of the wires behind the unit but was able to get it seated and bolted in with the help of my wifes small hands guiding the wiring harness from the back of the head unit. The sound is good enough for me. 45 years old with hearing loss. Wife and Daughter say that it sounds great!

Pros: Good size screen and the controls are easy to learn. Looks great with supplied installation hardware.

Cons: Can only play videos using the DVD player or through the Smart Access connection through your smart phone. USB and Micro SD will only play audio, not video. Firmware fix, maybe?? To many buttons to select to make a telephone call.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

DUDE!! This is SWEET! I'm a gadget fan. The Clarion NX603 successfully integrates GPS, CD/DVD, Bluetooth music, handsfree phone and other apps easily! The install couldn't have been easier. Basically, splice the provided harness to the unit plug and PLAY!! I'm a fan and am looking to install in my other two cars. Easy to use on the road.

Pros: Simple install, fills all your needs. Great price, great features. Nice display even for 'older eyes'.

Cons: Dims a little to much for me when I turn on lights during daytime (for backroad safety) and still wearing sunglasses. I honestly couldn't think of anything so I dug deep for this one tiny piece.

The looks and features are very hi-tech, the navigation works very well, it also has many warnings such as if you are over the speed limit, upcoming red-light cameras and things of that nature, that you can set. Bluetooth is a plus.

Pros: All the different features and colors.

Cons: I am having difficulty with the Smart Access.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely great - Fits and looks like factory and easy to install. Made a call to steering wheel control adapter company for guidance but it all went great. Microsoft Sync in my 2011 F150 was horrendous and unworkable, this bypassed it well. I would recommend the external microphone for call quality. First time using TomTom software but I love it

Pros: Easy and attractive installation. Works perfectly with steering wheel controls. Sound and GPS are great. Easy to use controls.

Cons: Be sure to buy the external microphone for bluetooth calling.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Clarion has open up an array of music and video options. The DVD picture is truely clear and the sound is home theater quality depending on your setup. Also between my ipod touch and my phone (google nexus 4) it allows me so many options such as: pandora, blue tooth steaming, phone aps, gaming and many more. The GPS is accurate well displayed which you can edit to your preface. I really enjoy how it is so easy to locate your place of interest and display the phone number.

Pros: gps , ease of device interface. android and apple compatibility, store multiple devices prefaces, multiples settings for controlling your music such and your sub woofer and amp. affordability

Cons: slow boot time. I would like the boot time to be instant such as it preddecessors. screen display in the day time needs to be improved but not terrible.

Pros: Best unit for the price point!

Cons: Slow at times when it has a lot going on. Smart access a little complicated

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this receiver. The price was good, and it was on sale. Has all the features I wanted, maybe HD radio would have been nice too. Navigation works well, only gripe so far is it doesn't seem to end the route automatically when you reach the destination, otherwise excellent interface. Radio and CD/ DVD work well. Back up camera (optional) works great. It was a pain on my truck to tap the brake/ reverse wires but otherwise a very easy installation. The steering wheel control integration works great too. The hands free phone is excellent, i do wish the unit had more memory to store my entire phone book, not just the first half of the alphabet. Bluetooth with my iPhone 5 couldn't have been easier and not I can listen to podcasts with ease. I'm looking forward to upgrading my speakers. I lost my factory subwoofer since the unit has only 4 amp channels out so maybe a new one is in the future too. I highly recommend Clarion!

Pros: Ease of installation Appearance Interface Functionality

Cons: no HD radio small phone book memory

KMFDM83 from Asheville, NC on 4/27/2014

I purchased this unit and installed it today. It is an immediate and noticeable difference in sound quality over the Pioneer that came stock on my car. This is still on the stock Pioneer speakers, mind you. Only extra I have is the Bazooka stealthbox. Fairly easy install (with the most head scratching coming from mating in the optional Axxess ASWC-1 to retain steering wheel controls, but that is a different review) for someone who isn't exactly a pro with things like this. It booted right up and ran out of the gate with the nav being a very fast setup. The HDMI link took a bit of extra time so my cell would mirror properly, but I have a Verizon HTC One Max so it is to be expected. Overall, very happy with this unit for the price.

Pros: Actually supports HTC phones for mirror through HDMI. Quick nav setup with good GUI.

Cons: None yet, but I'll come back and try to edit, or post again to cover anything I come across.

Nice navigation, poor iphone 5 compatibility

Robert from San Dimas, CA on 4/27/2014

    2012 Nissan Frontier SV
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I am very disappointed with this product. Crutchfield support has been great. It is Clarion that is not so great. The interface is ok, would be nice for there to be more customization of the layout, but that is not the glaring issue as you will see below.

Pros: The navigation is great, the radio and sound quality is satisfactory. There is an audio aux-in port on the front of the unit, so that is how I will play music it seems.

Cons: The iphone 5 came out 1.5 years ago and the NX603 that came out AFTER release of the iphone 5, is still not really iphone 5 compatible. Notably, Clarion did release a software update for the NX603 on 11/1/13 that still does NOT address the lack of iphone 5 compatibility. So how are they claiming iphone 5 compatibility, you ask? Well, the bluetooth will connect, so you can place calls. However, the "Smart Access" applications do not work. Pandora will play maybe 1 song before disconnecting.

    2005 Lincoln Aviator
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit perfectly in my '05 Aviator. The sound quality is excellent.

Pros: Does everything as outlined in the product description. Unit comes with the USB extension so there is no need to buy one for the rear port.

Cons: Unit does not allow for RDS. Radio stations now transmit digitally and many provide artist and song titles in the transmission, as well as station ID and any other information they wish to embed in the signal. With the amount of 'technology' in this unit, RDS compatibility is the only one that was omitted.

Joshua from Damascus, MD. on 3/20/2014

    2011 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit works great but the passcode function for "explicit" stations on SiriusXM is annoying. I should be able to disable this once with a passcode and never have to do this again. Navigation and other features work great so far. The auto detect for night time or daytime screen change does not seem to work, i keep having to change it manually.

Pros: Changing colors, sound quality, install, overall look.Crutchfield support and pricing.

Cons: SiriusXM passcode for certain stations, auto detect for day or night time screen change doesnt seem to work.

    1996 Chevrolet Corvette
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a stock head unit on a '96 Corvette. It fit perfectly and the face plate cosmetics match the Corvette superbly. The control display in orange matches the stock dash opening perfectly. As for sound, it is incredible, and in my case I retained the stock Bose speakers, which handle the power output stellar. With this car being a stick shift, being able to manage the Nav, bluetooth music and phone make life easy. The menu system is simple, and straight forward. If you are upgrading your C4 Vette, this one is a winner!

Pros: Great fit, simple operation, great sound, awesome price point.

Cons: The only con is it would be really cool if you could customize the descriptions of each input, and the back ground wallpaper. Some stereos allow you put your car logo, etc on the wallaper.

    Nice Sound, Sketchy Nav Updates

Redwood from Pelahatchie, MS on 3/15/2014

    2004 Toyota 4Runner
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Giving 3 stars only because it's a nice unit, produces good quality sound, and when it works, it seems to work well. This is after having it installed for less than 24 hours. I brought the Nav SD card in for the free map update. Plugged it into my card reader, and the PC wouldn't see it. I gave up, took it back out to the truck, and now the head unit won't see it. All the work into the install, and I've got to tear back into it tomorrow to put the original head unit back in until I can get this mess with the card resolved. After doing some research, the SD cards are mated to the unit. You HAVE to use the card that came with it. I"m hoping Crutchfield can work with me on this. This is the first and last Clarion I will ever own.

Pros: Nice sound, easy to use interface

Cons: Difficult and crowded install in the dash of an 04 Limited 4Runner. Serial number locked SD card and head unit is disabled completely without the card, not just the navigation.

I have never owned a Clarion before, but did a lot of research before my purchase. I had high expectations after that and the NX603 has lived up to them in every department. Everything works great on this unit. Not a single problem with the install either.

Pros: Excellent quality from an excellent name. And the maps were readily downloadable just as advertised. It took about 2 hours though, so be warned.

    Cons: None

The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 (RGB) and 1,152,000 total pixels. The unit's touchscreen panel features interactive controls making menu navigation easy.

    • Touchscreen GUI w/ Flick & Gesture Control: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. The NX603 touchscreen responds to your finger gestures just as your smartphone screen would. You are able to drag & drop icons into different positions to customize the screen. The touchscreen also supports flick operation, so you can quickly scroll to another menu page. In addition to flick operation, gesture control provides two-finger pinch zoom. Slide your fingers further apart to zoom in, and slide the fingers closer together to zoom out.
    • Short Cut Menu: The unit has a main menu for using all functions and a shortcut menu that groups together frequently used functions. Use of the shortcut menu allows you to quickly access frequently used functions Up to five frequently used functions can be registered to the shortcut menu.
    • Dimmer & Brightness Control: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate. You can also manually adjust the unit's Day & Night display brightness from 0-32.
    • Variable Button Illumination (728 colors): Since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touchscreen, there are only four physical buttons (including a rotary dial) on the unit for the most basic and commonly-used functions. You can set the head unit's button illumination to 1 of 9 preset colors or have the unit scan through all the preset colors. You can also select three custom user colors by adjusting red, green, and blue values.

Start Up Time: The NX603 has a start up time of approximately 22.7 seconds from Off to an audio/video source screen; and another 8.7 seconds to the map screen for a total start up time of approximately 31.4 seconds from Off to the navigation map screen.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied 18-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus. Video can only displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion NX6023 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory radio brackets and the supplied hardware. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the NX603 in a custom 4" opening. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

Navigation Mapping Software: The integrated map database (by TomTom) used by the Clarion NX603 was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection. Navigation data is stored on the unit's integrated flash memory for quicker access and response. The NX603 provides map coverage of the United States (all 50 states), Canada, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The NX603's integrated Clarion Mobile Map navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: It is easy to keep the navigation system up to date. Simply download new map data from Clarion's portal site (, store the updated map data on a microSD card and insert it into the Clarion NX603 via the front-panel microSD card slot. You have 30 days from purchase to download the latest available map free of charge.

GPS (Global Position System): Clarion's built-in navigation helps you find your way to your destination with an integrated GPS receiver & external GPS antenna. The Clarion NX603 features a built-in SiRF GPS receiver and includes a GPS antenna which can be mounted on the dash with the included 3M tape. The NX603 uses Global Position System (GPS) satellites, and a digital roadway map database to calculate and display vehicle positioning and travel direction. The NX603 considers vehicle speed an heading changes, together with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on a digital map. Signal from GPS satellites are used to determine the vehicle location. Three (good) or four (best) satellites must be receive to accurately determine location. This unit does not transmit your GPS position, so others cannot track you.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a red arrow by default), the recommended route (an magenta line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Clarion NX603 allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Clarion NX603's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits. Services are listed under the following categories - Gas, Food, Lodging, and Restrooms. You must be on a major highway or road to use this feature.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Tunnel View: When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.

Audible Alerts: The Clarion NX603 offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance: In addition to graphic directions, the NX603 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can select from English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese audible languages. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The NX603 provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Note: While navigating, other sources may be selected and listened to; such as AM/FM Tuner, CD, Smart Access Apps, USB, iPod, & Bluetooth. The unit will mute the audio of the other source during navigation voice-prompts.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for POIs nearby.

Find Menu: The Find Menu gives you many different ways to choose your destination or insert a waypoint in your current route. An on-screen keyboard appears to allow you to enter your destination from one of the following categories:

    Destination Search Description
Find on Map Search for a destination by scrolling the map display.
Home Store and easily recall your home address.
Find Address Enter full/partial address, or search for a city (central location), or search for the intersection of two roads.
Find Places Search for over 11,000,000 points-of-interest (POIs) by name, phone #, or category; search near your current location, in a specific city, along your current route, or near your destination.
Favorites Store your favorite locations for easy recall.

Phone Number Select a destination by entering phone #.
Photo Select locations from geotagged JPEG photos from an inserted USB or microSD/SDHC memory device.
Waypoints You can add intermediate destinations along your main route.

Route Calculation: The Clarion NX603 calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Green: gives a quick, but full efficient route based on the fuel consumption data you provide
      • Economical: combines the benefits of Fast and Short; calculates as if it were calculating the Fast route, but it takes other roads as well to save fuel
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.
Note: You can select "Route Alternative" to see the turn-list and map screen of three routes with the selected route planning parameters, giving you the option to select which route to take.

Vehicle Profile: You can create a vehicle profile for your car, truck, or SUV. Enter the following parameters for your vehicle - Fuel Consumption (avg. fuel consumption of your vehicle in city and rural areas), Engine Type (engine and fuel type), Fuel Price (avg. fuel price for travel cost calculation), Max Speed (max speed you travel), Weight, and Dimensions (length x width x height).

My Route: "My Route" displays the route parameters and the calculated route in its full length on the map. You can also perform route-related actions such as editing or canceling your route, setting a start point for the route, picking route alternatives, avoiding parts of the route, simulating navigation or adding the destination to your Favorites.

Modifying A Route: When navigation is already started, there are several ways to modify the active route. You can edit the route by modifying the list of destinations and waypoints. You can add or remove destinations (waypoints), modify the start position or reorder the list. You'll be able to create a brand new route, add intermediate destinations (waypoints), and modify the final destination. Or, you can simply cancel your active route.

Trip Monitor: The Trip Monitor contains useful information about your trip. This information can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip log data includes; Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Automatic Route Recalculation: The unit will automatically recalculate your route if you stray from the navigation unit's previously calculated route.

Off-Road Navigation: The difference between the on-road and off-road modes is the navigation itself. When you are on the Map screen with an off-road route, your position and heading is not aligned with the nearest road and there is no turn by turn navigation; just a recommended direction. You see a straight line drawn between your current position and the next destination to reach. The Turn Preview field in the top left corner shows an arrow with your bearing and the distance of the next destination.

Quick Menu: The Quick Menu is a selection of controls and functions that are frequently needed during navigation. It can be opened directly from the Map screen by tapping Quick Menu icon. You can customize which controls and functions are accessible through the Quick Menu.

Calculator & Unit Converter: The calculator allows you to perform simple arithmetic. The Unit Converter converts distance, speed, area, currency, temperature, volume, and weight.

    • Direct Search : You can locate the beginning of a movie scene using the time, chapter numbers, or title numbers recorded on a DVD video disc. You can also select a specific MP3/WMA track from a disc, USB device, or microSD/SDHC.
    • Skip Search: Chapters or Tracks are skipped down or up from the current location, as many times as the key is pressed, and then playback starts.
    • Fast Forward/Rewind : The NX603 offers a variable fast forward and rewind function. You can select between 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x.
    • Scan: The first 10 seconds of each music track on the disc is played.

Parental Lock: You can set and change the level of parental lock. This function allows cutting scenes that are unfavorable for children or replacing them automatically with other scenes prepared in advance. There are 5 levels of parental lock that are protected by a custom user 4-digit password.

Off Insert/Eject + Auto Reload: You can insert or eject a disc with the unit off. If a disc is left in the ejected position for 20 seconds, the disc is automatically reloaded.

Mounting Angle: For proper disc playback, you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    Audio Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and high linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion NX603 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)
Note: The power specifications for the NX603 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/4V RCA Output + Sub Level Control: The Clarion NX603 features 6ch/4V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear/Sub). The non-fading subwoofer preamp output features an independent level control (+/-6).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion NX603 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

    • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 50Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
    • High-Pass Filter: The NX603 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 50Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the head unit.

Original Sound Technology "Intelligent Tune": The Clarion NX603 features "Intelligent Tune" which provides a variety of audio adjustments to help you fine tune your music.

    • Graphic EQ: Choose one of six Preset EQ Modes (Bass.B, High.B, Acoustic, Impact, Smooth, or Flat) that best matches your style of music. Or, you can manually adjust the unit's 6-band graphic EQ (60Hz/250Hz/820Hz/1.6kHz/5kHz/16kHz) for a more custom sound. Save up to 3 customized user presets.
    • Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume.
    • Virtual Bass: Enhances bass output in car stereo system for richer bass sound.
    • Vocal Image Control: The vocals can be adjusted front-to-rear and left-to-right in order to reproduce a more powerful vocal soundstage.
    • Sound Restorer: Restores compressed audio media, such as MP3 or WMA, closely to the original soundtrack to enable a more enriched, detail sound quality.
    • Volume Smoother: Volume Smoother automatically adjusts differences in volume level of all kinds of music sources and scenes and compensates the volume level. When Volume Smoother is on, the volume level is monitored and adjusted at all times, and differences in volume level are suppressed to a fixed range to enhance listening pleasure.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV + Remote Connection

Dual AV Inputs: The Clarion NX603 is equipped with AV input terminals on the front and rear of the unit to enable enjoyment of content from an external connected source. The rear composite video/stereo RCA inputs are ideal for permanent installations, while the front AV minijack (3.5mm) input will come in handy for quick connection of a portable audio/visual source.

Video Output: The NX603 is equipped with a single composite video output for connecting a rear monitor (sold separately). The same source (DVD, AV input, or iPod video) will be displayed on the rear monitor's screen as displayed on the head unit's touchscreen monitor.

HDMI Input: The HDMI input is solely used to connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.0+) to the NX603 via Clarion's CCA771 HDMI-to-microHDMI cable (020CCA771, sold separately) or Clarion's CCA770 HDMI cable (020CCA770, sold separately) and a 3rd party MHL adapter (also sold separately) in order to display and control the Smart Access application.

Optional Camera Input: Adding an optional rear-view camera (such as the 020CC510) to the NX603 requires the Clarion CCA-644 Rear Vision Camera input cable (sold separately). The cable has a proprietary connector on one end (which plugs into the proprietary camera port on the NX603) and a composite video jack on the other end which plugs into the optional backup camera. Once a rear-view camera is connected to this unit, the rear view image is displayed on the NX603's screen when your vehicle is placed in reverse gear (purple/white wire of harness must be connected to reverse light wire of vehicle). In addition to the rear-view image, marker lines are displayed in order to assist you further while backing up. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

The USB port is on the back of the unit. You will need to run a USB cord from the back of the unit to an accessible place in your vehicle like the glove box. The USB cord is included with the unit. [ ROBERT M  Jun 18, 2014 ]
The USB slot is on the back of the unit, they supply a USB extention cable so you can route it somewhere easier to access. [ Travis  Jun 18, 2014 ]
If you look at the picture of the back of the receiver, the usb slot is on the back, the very bottom, furthest to the right. But it comes with a long extension cable, so you can route it somewhere else. [ David  Jun 17, 2014 ]
It comes with a USB extension. My installer ran it to my glove box. The front looks like a USB but it is a mico card slot. [ Elisabeth  Jun 16, 2014 ]
Unfortunately the USB is on the rear of the receiver. A bear to get to... BUT wait! The good news is with the install kit they send a super handy USB extension plug so you could run that anywhere (I think it's about 6' long) and use that as your USB plug. Because all of my devices use apples lightning plug, I plugged a standard iPhone cord directly into the unit. I hope this helps. Early warning, if you've got an iPhone 5 or 5s this radio isn't 5+ friendly [ Paul  Jun 16, 2014 ]
No, but it will give you warnings if you exceed the posted speed limit. [ Kelvin  Jun 27, 2014 ]
Yes but on the gps only. You can set what you want to be displayed. For example, your speed, the speed limit of the area, what time you will arrive at your destination, how many miles left etc. However I think it only shows these options if you have a destination set. [ Esther  Jun 10, 2014 ]
It does not show your current speed. It only shows the speed limit. It does tell you when you are over the speed limit. You can disable this function if desired. [ George  Jun 07, 2014 ]
    No it does not [ ERIC T.  Jun 07, 2014 ]
I still don't know all of the options, but I have not seen that [ GREGORY  Jun 07, 2014 ]
I own this unit for a month and I couldn't find the mph display feature yet. I think it doesn't have the feature as I have tried every single button I can possibly find. [ Suk  Jun 07, 2014 ]
Just checked and was not able to find a way to show MPH. Went through all of the settings for the GPS, no luck. Maybe I am missing something or it could be fixed with a firmware update. [ John  Jun 06, 2014 ]
    Not installed yet [ John  Jun 06, 2014 ]
I can confirm that MPH is an option for display while using the GPS routing. I have not tried to have it always show MPH, but I can confirm it displays when using the GPS to provide directions. It is not the default setup, but you can modify the data displayed during routing (Time to Destination, Distance to Destination, Arrival Time, ETC) to include MPH. FWIW.... this is how I discovered my speedo is off. :) [ DONALD  Jun 06, 2014 ]
Yes it has an option to have it on the screen full time or just when you exceed the speed limit. [ Rev Robert  Jun 06, 2014 ]
    No [ Federico  Jun 06, 2014 ]
It does not work for me either. The app is pretty much useless. [ ALEX  Jun 03, 2014 ]
If you are an iphone used the answer is nothing, it is not actually supported. If you are an android user, maybe it does something but I don't know because I'm in the iphone category. The number of apps in it seems very limited though. I believe the idea behind it is a way to have apps on your phone work on the unit - great idea, horrible execution by clarion it seems. [ Robert  Jun 03, 2014 ]
I downloaded the app although I didn't get that message. This may be a phone/carrier iasue? Frankly SmartAccess is useless feature clutter, particularly if you are using an Android phone. If you are using Android, you need to get an HDMI MHL cable. Smart Access will not work over normal HDMI in Android. Also from what I was told by tech support, Pandora control just does not work with Android at all. Finally, if you do connect using the correct cable and a SmartAccess connection profile, then you cannot use Bluetooth Audio, just Bluetooth Handsfree. To use Bluetooth Audio you will have to manually select a Bluetooth Handsfree+Audio profile. Like I said. Sounds like a fancy feature but mostly garbage. [ ASHOKE S  Jun 03, 2014 ]
From what I've figured, it allows control of various phone apps from the head unit. However, you have to have the smart access app open to use it. I have found the Bluetooth works just fine for streaming the music, phone calls, and other such uses. [ SCOTT  Jun 02, 2014 ]
Smart access allows you to use certain apps on your phone with the radio as the app on the phone was just a regular function of the radio. I was getting the same thing for the app in the apple store on my iPhone 5. After countless internet searches and reading that the radio really was only made to work with the iPhone 4 and 4s. So unless you have that phone you can pretty much forget about using the smart access feature of the radio. However I have found away it buy downloading all the stuff onto a iPod touch and turning on my mobile hotspot on my phone and it will work that way but than you would need to get yourself a iPod cord if you don't already have it. Hope this helps you out. [ Zachary  Jun 02, 2014 ]
The SD cards used by the Clarion NX603 are loaded manually the same as you would insert a SD card in a tablet or laptop. The slots are located in the lower LEFT corner. The navigation map SD card is located behind the SD cover at the very bottom of the unit. The other SD card slot is the open space area just above the navigation map SD card slot. Sorry for the delayed responce. [ MICHAEL  May 21, 2014 ]
I have not used my SD card [ MARVIN  May 19, 2014 ]
Sorry I cannot answer. We had it installed and have not bothered with it. [ Elizabeth  May 18, 2014 ]
just like a regular sd card...push it in to insert, push it in again to eject :P [ ROBERT J  May 18, 2014 ]
Push it into the slot under the front A/V port, with the copper contacts facing down. But, unlike normal-sized SD cards that you can push to eject, you will have to use your fingernails or tweezers to pull the card out. The micro SD card for the GPS (behind the door just underneath the micro SD slot) works in the same manner, but you will never have to take this out since the updates are saved to it through the receiver. [ MARCUS  May 18, 2014 ]
This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation. [ Krissy  Apr 15, 2014 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Clarion will function very similarly to the factory nave system in a sense that it won't allow any type of streaming video or playback of video when the car is in motion, unless you are sending the video to a second zone, or monitor, say in the back of the vehicle. Check it out, this is the description as listed from Clarion; Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied 18-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus. Video can only displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. The apps, and controls for Nav will work similarly as well. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Apr 08, 2014 ]  Staff
Not really. Just tap the button above the volume/power knob and it should come up. Mine came right up. [ MICHAEL E  Apr 07, 2014 ]
It comes built in. Just mount the antenna on your dashboard and allow a few minutes for it locate the satellites. To save time, you can turn your vehicle on after the unit is connected and have it locating the satellites while you put your console back together (depending on your vehicle) and it should be ready to go by the time you finish. [ MARCUS  Apr 04, 2014 ]
The navigation is built into the unit. [ Jeff  Apr 03, 2014 ]  Staff
Yes you can. Just make sure you buy the harness for it. [ MARCUS  Apr 04, 2014 ]
yes you has the appropriate ports [ ROBERT J  Mar 31, 2014 ]
I've only had the unit for a month and have not had any issues with updates. According to the operation manual, the updates are automatic, no subscription required. It does have a micro SD card with the GPS data on it, so it leads me to believe (just possibly, not stated in the manual) that you can put it in a computer and download updates to it, sort of like the portable Garmin devices. So as for now, it has worked fine and has current data in it (as far as I can tell), but I have not seen a message asking for an update or stating that an update is in progress. [ MARCUS  Apr 04, 2014 ]
    Free [ Fred  Mar 25, 2014 ]
    Updates are free [ GREG  Mar 25, 2014 ]
It does not have a mute wire. [ Chris  Mar 15, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  Mar 11, 2014 ]  Staff
