    Clarion VX400

    disappointed on 10/19/2011

I purchased the unit mainly for the price. For $350, its packed full of features such as Bluetooth audio streaming/phone calls, Pandora control via a cable, and an external Audio In. The greatest part is that the connections done in the rear of the unit, leaving the face of the unit flush and free of dangling cables. However, that is all the praise I can give it. Although the unit works, it doesn't work very well. For instance, when the bluetooth feature is enabled, the unit would constantly switch between the unit's volume and that of your phone whenever it receives a signal, like new mail or txt via my iPhone; causing a sudden static popping sound. To avoid that, I turned off the BT and took it me forever to figure out how to turn it back on. And that leads to what many of the reviewers mentioned, the menus are not intuitive. You would think if you want to turn the BT back on, you touch the BT screen button. But no, you have to dive into another sub-menu in order to do that (already forgot how I did it). I was able to get the video function to work through my iPhone but one day it sudden decided not to. The screen flickers quite a bit and could greatly benefit from a faster refresh rate. However if you can look past all of that, its a decent unit. It offers the driver the option to view the imagine from the backup camera while the car is in drive (great for towing). I am however willing to pay a little bit more and exchange it for a better unit, like a Pioneer.

This is a great value for your buck sounds fine with my factory speakers,I got all the extra bells and whisles,GPS, Sirius radio,Back up camera, and iphone cables. no hd radio for me I have satalite. The radio, like all new things takes a bit to get use to but all and all im fine with this product. The one thing I'm not fond of is the camera does not automaticly come on when in reverse, not the easiest to do in a moment that you need to back into a space look to the screen and have to go back (clear the screen)and touch the camera the city with my f150. Crutchfield is the best A++++ Dallas(my sales rep.) was awsome! NOT EASY TO SAY BEING AN EAGLES FAN..

This Deck has everything that I wanted and could ask for. With the add-on navigation, I now have full use of all features of the device. The install was easy for all parts included. navigating the menus are simple and the sound is awesome when compared to my old deck. Great product for a low price and I would recommend to anyone.

This unit has given me trouble since day one. The first issue is the unit just randomly crashes and restarts. You lose all of your stations, audio settings, and video settings. Started making a high pitched fuzzy sound and went out. does NOT work well with iphone, I normally have Kenwood joke on me now I just should have waited for the back order.

    Poor Quality, always having issues

GZwrx from Portland, OR on 7/26/2011

This deck is just about the poorest product you can buy in the headunit department. Very limited features! In terms of eq, it literally only comes with Bass, Treble, Fade and Balance. The user-interface is terrible. Does NOT work well with iphone. The bluetooth feature is very weak. I get this horrendous buzz when I switch from radio or audio to BT. Radio features are beginner at best. Seriously, this thing belongs in the trash can.

    Worst Quality Player PEriod

RDUB from Chicago IL on 7/13/2011

First off, Clarion used to sell quality products, thats all in the past. This unit has given me trouble since day one. The first issue is the unit just randomly crashes and restarts. You lose all of your stations, audio settings, and video settings. The second problem I had was the RCA out for an amp went crazy. Started making a high pitched fuzzy sound and went out. The third problem is now I put ANY type of disk in and it just says loading for about 5 minutes and then spits it back out. So I have a useless unit in the dash of my Infiniti now. BUYERS BEWARE!!!!

Pros: rear USB connection - allows me to put a USB flash drive in the glove box When playing from USB, it remembers not only the song, but where it was in the song. Bluetooth... Cons: sometimes forgets the bluetooth settings, i.e. turns off bluetooth. No way to store just a few numbers in the phone directory. You have to upload all the contacts in your phone. I don't want ALL the contacts from my phone in the car. Besides, it makes it difficult to select one. Oh, and when it turns off bluetooth, the list goes away too. As others have said, the menu is difficult to use. Not a good idea to try while driving. Other: I haven't even tried putting a DVD in, so can't comment on the display quality.

The load time is horrible. Every menu is cumbersome. It was not at all what I had imagined. I have returned it and ordered a CX501, think I will stick with a knob and skip the DVD player.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I like this unit very much so far. Plenty of options for inputs and outputs. Only a few things I don't like When in tuner mode you don't have buttons 1 thru 6 for presets. You have to scan through a listing of stations and touch the one you want. Also if listening to a cd or dvd, it stops playing when you go back to the input screen(home screen). Not a biggie if you re switching inputs.Kind of a pain when you want to adjust settings. It has a very nice display lcd. bright screen for controls, fairly sensitive screen. Ample wattage for speakers and plenty of wires to hook up.Ipod and bluetooth With USB ability a huge plus!! Now we will see how well it holds up in the long run.

Always used to think Clarion was top notch

James from Galt, CA on 5/15/2011

Wow got the stereo in March and was having problems by mid to late april just over a month on the use and having problems with the radio. I don't mind the use of the interface, USB, or nav, althought the HD radio version was bad. The biggest problem is living in California and having to use the bluetooth, I have had to reset the deck 3 times so far to reset the internal relays to re0initialize the bluetooth and in the colder mornings forget about listening to anything until the heater has been or for a few minutes, I don't think I got a bogus unit, I think that they have major issues with this unit and like cars, should be recalled.

I bought this player about 2 months ago and i really made a bad choice. The load times on this player is forever.I have a brand new car and upgraded the cd player but now i think i was better off with the factory one. When i put a cd in the player it sounds like something crazy is going on in there and when i hit the pause button i can hear the ignoring noise coming from the cd player. this is by far the worst cd player i have ever own. This cd player also have a problem ejecting the cd's. This is a brand new cd player why am i having so many problems with it in the first couple on months...... dnt buy!!!!

Has nice features for the novice although navigating through the endless menus can be cumbersome. The DVD portion of the head unit is nice and displays very nicely. The USB still needs alot of work. This unit will not shuffle through songs in a folder only if the songs are listed by themselves. Having songs listed in folders on an MP3 player, you can only shuffle inside that folder not the rest of the MP3 player. If you search for a song, it takes to long to find and if the current song ends before you find it, then the menu resets and you have to start all over. I primary wanted the unit because of the USB but now regret buying it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this product primarily so I could control and charge my ipod, and the interface with the Ipod is awful. Have not tried the DVD player part of it. Trying to control your Ipod with the touchscreen is extremely cumbersome and very inefficient. To start, there is no way to scroll through all of your artists quickly. You can see four at a time, and then can skip through every four using the touch screen. This takes a long time if you have a large Ipod and are trying to get to an artist in the middle of the alphabet. Same with songs. Once you click on the artist you want, there are not separate folders for each album, which is annoying if you have a band with many different albums, you could be scrolling through 50+ songs to find the one you want. From there, once you click on the song, there is no way to go back and click on other individual songs from that artist. You either have to go through the main menu and scroll down starting from A again to your artists, or you click the next button until the song you want comes up. Just bad software if you are trying to control your Ipod. Cannot give a review on bluetooth or its DVD features, but I would not recommend it.

    2003 Lincoln Navigator
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit for my 2003 Lincoln Navigator after a few weeks of research. The biggest selling point for me was the price and ability to add on later. My third Clarion receiver in 20 years. After a few days of playing around with this unit, a few things stuck out to me. The first is the 10-15 seconds startup time. Would have been nice to have more station presets on one screen. I also noticed that navigating through menus was not "logical". The back buttons (2 on some screens) do different things on different screens. I thought back meant you go back to the previous screen (?). Made no sense to me, but I was willing to live with it. Figured I'd overcome the learning curve quickly anyway. I then experienced considerable glare issues. There is NO brightness control. Couldn't see the display with sunroof open, I could with my factory deck. However, the reason I returned this radio was the iPod controls. If you like to skip around to different songs at will, without creating playlists, this not the radio for you. Takes too long (15-25 seconds) to search and find a song, especially if you have a few thousand songs. Cannot control the iPod itself once connected, only through the radio. I completely understand the good reviews. This unit will be fine for most users, it's all about personal preferences. Hope my review was helpful. P.S. Crutchfield's return policy was great, and refunded my money quickly.

At first i was exited to receive the radio but after a couple of weeks started. having issues, started loosing bluetooth. gui seemed cheap but i was able to see. past that trying to see the true potential of the radio. once i was able to. finally get the radio to my satisfaction once again lost the bluetooth. completely this time it was the radio, tried the reset options with no luck. contacted crutchfield and they were more than happy to exchange the radio for a. replacement one.And i also had no luck using my ipod six generation thru the usb. wire.So overall not happy with the radio, but that is just my opinion.

I am happy to have returned the Pioneer (non-DVD) and exchanged it for this radio. It was only $50 more with lots of features. It's great to have the hard-buttons for volume. Decent DVD quality. I will be adding a back-up camera. I am looking for more reviews in the navigation module before a drop another $200. There are few DVD receivers at this price. Definitely recommended.

This is a great stereo for the price. Everything works as advertised. Installation was a little difficult in my truck, but I was able to get it done. I had to call support once and they answered all of my questions. I added the sirius satellite tuner and it works great. I plan to add the Nav system soon.

Clarion let me down with this one

    J from NC on 1/13/2011

You can add a lot of features to this unit, but somehow it still isn't great. I have the head unit, Nav system, and connected a backup camera and steering wheel controls. Installation was reasonably easy on my '06 Audi A4, the toughest part was fitting all the wires. As others have written, the interface is horrid . Even though this unit was new for 2010, the interface seems really outdated. The interaction with the system is cumbersome and not intuitive at all. Switching to the main screen, to select inputs, etc, the audio stops (not expected with features like Nav and Bluetooth). With the Bluetooth phone, there are no voice commands, only screen inputs. I use the voice command button on my BlackBerry and then just let the stereo pick up once the phone dials. For the Nav system, the interface and screens look like they're straight out of the 80's and I've yet to figure out how to get the system to allow me to enter a street address (seems to only want to do intersections). The maps are outdated straight out of the box and I can't find any updates anywhere on the web. (The Clarion site is useless for this need.) Overall, I'm very let down by this unit. Perhaps I have high expectations? Well, Clarion used to be one of the best. If this unit is any indication of the products they're turning out these days, then they've fallen far from they're glory.v If it weren't a gift I'd rather return it and exchange it for another model.

Not sure why the bad reviews

    Aaron from Alabama on 1/5/2011

First of all I'm not rocking the car! I listen to my iPod and mainly NFL radio. That being said I cannot tell you if this system rocks. I can tell you that it is very nice and easy to use. The Bluetooth on my iPhone 4 is perfect. Phonebook syncs no issues at all and you can use all phone functions on the screen so you can keep your phone in your pocket or wherever. iPhone via special video cable will play any video source you have on the phone YouTube, podcasts, shot video or whatever. I really like the unit and the interface. It is not complicated and easy to navigate. Not overloaded with options so if you like that you may want another unit. only problem I had was with the Titan ground and that was fixed with an inline RCA device...had a pop when switching sources.

I installed this in a Honda Civic, the install was not too bad. I like the bluetooth feature and the rear camera hookup. The HD radio works great but I wish they could be saved as favorites. Overall great radio with lots of features and connections, and it has an awesome sound.

Worst radio I have ever purchased

Steve from Los Angeles on 11/21/2010

This unit other than the fact you can play DVD's is the worst radio I have ever seen. The GUI is just plain terrible. I think a 10 year old could come up with a better user interface. And then if your playing music thru the bluetooth it will on a very regular basis freeze the volume real high. And the only way to fix it is to reboot the whole system. Which in turn you lose all your settings and channels saved etc.

    What a letdown

    2003 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money and brand I expected much more. User interface is very clunky and difficult to use, not to mention it just looks very cheap. Interface is not customizable. Bluetooth works ok but sound quality was average at best but had the death pop when activated/deactivated. DVDs work fine, but it won't recognize even a 1gb USB stick. iPhone control works decent. The remote is VERY busy, not easy to use on the fly. If doing the install yourself be prepared to cram lots of wireharness back there. Do you really need around a dozen harness's protruding from the back of the unit? Very dissapointing overall, would not recommend.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion VX400 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory radio brackets and the supplied hardware. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the VX400 in a custom 4" opening.

Note: As always, please consult theCrutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

6.5" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Clarion VX400 has an integrated 6.5" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 1200 x 234 and 280,800 total pixels. The display features brightness and shape (4:3 or 16:9) adjustment. The unit's touch panel features interactive controls making menu navigation easy.

Touch Panel Controlled GUI: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. And thanks to the touch panel screen, accessing each function is as intuitive as touching its icon. This very straightforward system lets the driver keep his attention on the road, and enables front seat passengers to use any desired function without the need to "learn" anything. What's more, since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touch panel, there are only 3 physical buttons on the unit for the most basic and commonly-used functions.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent displaying video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

    Audio Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the VX400 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the VX400 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 40 watts x 4 channels (160 watts total)

Audio Settings: The Clarion NX500 offers the following audio adjustments.

    • Preset EQ: Jazz, Pop, Classical, Rock, Urban, Rave, Movie, Techno, News, User, Flat.
    • Bass and Treble: Independent and variable bass (60, 80, 100, or 200Hz) and treble (10, 12.5, 15, or 17.5kHz) control (+/- 7 dB); you can also adjust the Bass Q-Factor to 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0.
    • Loudness: Compensates for low and high tones during low volume.

6-Channel Preamp Output: With 3 sets of RCA outputs, you are free to add external power amplifiers to create a more powerful, sophisticated audio system. Also, independent volume control is enabled for the subwoofer so you can adjust the level of bass output to your liking at any time, regardless of the output level of the other channels. The multimedia headunit is equipped with stereo front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs for connecting the unit to an external amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from -9 to +9 dB. The VX400 also features a low pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output. You can select between 80Hz, 120Hz or 160Hz.

Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion VX400 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner. The VX400 offers Seek, Scan, Manual, and Preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The VX400's built-in AM/FM tuner features 3 FM bands and 1 AM band. You can store up to 12 presets in each bands, allowing you to store 36 FM and 12 AM preset stations. You can manually store your favorite presets or have the VX400 automatically store the strongest stations for you.
