Stellar audio performance

Yamaha designed the BD-A1020 to take advantage of the latest surround sound and high-resolution audio formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS Master Audio™. In addition to the HDMI output which passes multi-channel audio, there are digital audio outputs for use with an older receiver that is not HDMI-compatible. Stereo analog outs provide yet another option, so you have plenty of ways to take advantage of this player's audio capabilities.

The BD-A1020 features a high-quality 192kHz/32-bit digital-to-analog converter for use with high-resolution discs and lossless FLAC music files from a thumb drive. The pure direct button turns off the video circuitry for music listening to minimize interference for a purer sonic experience. Combine the BD-A1020 with Yamaha's formidable Aventage receiver and you've got a rock-solid foundation for a mammoth home theater with amazing surround sound and video capabilities.

Surprisingly good video processing.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mostly bought this because it's the match for the Yamaha RX-A1020 receiver I purchased, and I'm OCD about such things. I'm actually really surprised at how good the video processing is. Looks great on my new tv in the man cave, and breathed new life into my 2007 plasma in the main house that I HAD been considering replacing.

Pros: -Video processing capabilities. -Build quality. -Perfect cosmetic match to receiver.

Cons: -Two units, and both froze during their first power down. Haven't seen since, so must be a "feature." -UI is also a perfect cosmetic match to receiver, unfortunately. -Like most, remote is garbage. Buy a Harmony.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a Yamaha A-810 receiver that I totally love. I figured buying the Yamaha Blu Ray was a no brainer since it would run on the same mobile apps as the receiver. It would be an incredible pairing of two units except the Blu Ray crashes frequently. I phoned Crutchfield whom immediately sent me another unit as I figured the unit was flawed, but I believe their is an inherrant problem with this unit. Since January of 2013 Yamaha has put one software update out that improved Youtube, & Netflix but the unit still crashes randomly.

Pros: Picture and Sound Excellent 5 Stars

Cons: Keeping the unit running without having to unplug the power cord once a month.

Great image quality, nice iPhone app, simple connectivity, and a dedicated Netflix button on the remote! Works great with my A730 receiver. The remote app controls both devices as one. Connects nicely to the TV through the receiver and works flawlessly. Awesome support for video formats.

Love It!!!

This blu ray loads much faster than my old Samsung, has a better picture and sound; I think it's great. I agree there isn't as many apps as other players but it does a great job with blu ray discs...they look beautiful. It also plays sacd's so that's a plus too. I am very happy with this player.

Pros: Great pictures & sound

Cons: Very few apps

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed to replace an 8-year-old Denon disk player that I used to play multi-channel audio SACDs and DVDs. The folks at Crutchfield recommended this Yamaha. It's perfect.

Pros: Does a nice job with high-res multi-channel audio.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this BDP for about 1 month and have been very pleased with the purchase. The sound quality was a given being a Yamaha product and I have been pleasantly surprised with the video quality. I am an avid scuba diver and I watch many underwater blu ray discs so the video quality is very important to me. I have not been disappointed, the player may not load as fast as an Oppo player but all in all it is a good product.

Pros: Great sound and video quality

Cons: none

Great BD Player

Josh from Syracuse on 4/29/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great looking Blu-Ray player! Matches my Yamaha 3020 receiver perfectly! Netflix streaming, and navigation is flawless! I was hoping load times would be a bit faster, but its not horrible. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my blu-ray copy of the avengers doesn't play properly. I know the disc is fine. The play menu doesn't show up. It only allows me to access the speacial features. I'm hoping its an issue that will be resolved with a system update. Everything else works great though! Picture and sound are fantastic! Much better than my previous Samsung player!

Pros: Picture/Sound/Netflix

Cons: Load time

Don't buy it

DrHiFi3D from Houston, TX on 3/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Do not buy this Blu-Ray player. It took forever to load disks - five minutes plus, no exaggeration - and often crashed, which required removing the power plug and rebooting. When it wasn't crashing the picture and sound-stage it produced were laudatory for a 3D Blu-Ray player at this price, but after a month I gave up on it, returned it, and bought an Oppo (which is truly awe-inspiring). Thank goodness for Crutchfield's exceptional returns policy and execution!

Pros: Brilliant deep-color and detailed sound-stage.

Cons: It takes forever to load a disk and frequently crashes, thereby requiring plug removal and reboot.

Yamaha BD-A1020 Very Nice!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the BD-A1020 Universal Blu-ray player which supports Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, SACD, DVD-A, DVD and almost every other audio/video format. The universal player also supports Netflix and YouTube video streaming. I like that Yamaha is aiming for the audiophile consumer who still listens to either format. SACD recordings are starting to become popular again with audiophiles. Both Bluray and DVD video/audio playback quality seemed near perfect.

Pros: Support for SACD at a good price. Wi-Fi support Can be paired up with a smartphone or ipod

Cons: Does not play all regions only Bluray (A) DVD (1) but I knew that going in.

Just what I wanted.

PKT from Atlanta, GA on 1/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this universal player in order to combine (and upgrade?) the functions of a dedicated Sony SACD player and a Panasonic BD player. I suspect many people considering this player might also be thinking about buying an Oppo. My two main reasons for choosing the Yamaha: (1) I loved the first Yamaha universal player (DVD-C950) that I owned 6-7 years ago. It could play literally ANYTHING you could throw in it, besides Blu-Ray which was not big yet back then. (2) You will pay $100 less than the cheapest Oppo. SACD playing - 8 out of 10. This thing sounds absolutely great. Subjectively, I feel that my old Yamaha and this new player sound "warmer" than my recent Sony, which was considered a benchmark player in the <$1000 category. This player *will* transmit the native DSD signal (allows you to choose DSD or PCM) over HDMI to your receiver. And my Yamaha receiver confirms that it is receiving DSD signal. I docked 1 point for some unexplained hanging that seems to be occurring randomly when I pop in a new disc. I also docked 1 point because the unit does not display any info (album/artist/title/etc.) about the current track, neither on screen nor on the front LCD. Blu-Ray - 8 out of 10. This player easily tops my old Panasonic for two reasons: (1) it loads discs MUCH quicker, (2) never hiccups during playback. I think most or all of these improvements are a function of a newer machine with a faster processor.

Pros: Plays SACD True DSD over HDMI Quick Load Times WiFi connection was a snap. Looks great, sturdy but not as bulky as Oppo. Silent disc tray and transport mechanisms.

Cons: Random hangs loading SACD? Still working this out... Does not display music track info on-screen or on the LCD.

Limited apps

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to hopefully interface well with my Yamaha Aventage receiver and provide wifi access for entertainment apps. When I got the unit and hooked it up I realized that it only had Netflix, YouTube and Picasa. My mistake for not doing the research but I figured a unit in this price range would come with all the bells and whistles. Put it back in the box and ordered a Samsung for a couple of hundred dollars less that also has wifi with access to all the current popular entertainment apps as well as actual web access. Crutchfield did the return without any questions asked and provided a return shipping label in email. Not so pleased with Yamaha, but very pleased with Crutchfield.

Cons: Price and extremely limited app selection.

Very Happy with Purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As expected from Yamaha, the unit works great and the overall Audio/Video quality is excellent! It also complements the Yamaha Adventage receiver design very well. An important bonus not specifically mentioned in the product literature is it outputs Netflix streaming in 5.1 Dolby Digital on titles offering 5.1 audio. I took off a star due to the relatively slow start up of the Netflix app. We have another device where the Netflix app starts up in less than half the time. This is minor though and I highly recommend the unit.

Pros: Excellent Audio / Video Quality Netflix Streaming in 5.1 Audio

Cons: Netflix App is Slow to Start

Good Combination for reasonable price

I was looking for a Universal Player with a good quality of CD and music audio playback to replace my PS3. After a long research, I could not find anything I wanted for less than $700 until I ran into this player. It plays everything including SACDs and FLAC files. As a Blu-ray player it is a great player with a great quality of video and sound. The colors come out deeper and richer than on my old PS3. You can't beat a Universal player with 192/32 DAC for this price. I've had it for about a week now. The CDs including MP3 CDs sound much better and as they should. The sound of regular CDs and SACDs is very rich but lacks some treble to my ear. However, my MP3 CDs sound amazing. The front USB connection allows you to play MP3, AAC, WMA and FLAC music files - and the quality of playback via this connection is surprisingly great. DAC does its job here! The palyer has a few cool features such as Reencode Audio format which sounds better than PCM and Bitstream to me. You can also UpMix your CD audio playback to NEO 6 format which produces 6 channel audio without using a central channel making the sound more "stereo". The CDs sound even greater filling the entire room with NEO 6 Channel UpMix. I gave it 4 stars since 5 stars belong to players such as OPPO. While the music sound is great, I think it could be better. The player does have a tendency to freeze on a power up and power down but I found it to be very common with most players these days. You need to give it time to boot.

Pros: Excellent Blu-ray Player and Video Quality. Great price for all the options. Front USB connection. Great quality of MP3 & FLAC file playback. New cool features such as Reencode Sound format and UpMix option.

Cons: Light weight. Has a tendency to freeze on a power up and power down. The sound quality of CD playback could be better.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Yamaha BD-A1020 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE

Blu-ray Disc: Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Much Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.
Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BD-A1020 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Blu-ray 3D: Blu-ray 3D is the Blu-ray disc video format for 3-dimensional (3D) video playback developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). Supporting Full HD (1080p), so you can enjoy high quality 3D video. TV and Blu-ray titles are also required to be 3D compatible to enjoy the 3D experience. Adding a 3D capable A/V Receiver will provide a more engaging audio and video consumer experience.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal. Occasionally, Yamaha may release new firmware for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website via the player's Ethernet connection.

Note: The tested Yamaha BD-A1020 contained Firmware Version 1.155O1200. Visit the BD-A1020's Yamaha Support Page for the latest Firmware update information.

DVD-Audio: DVD-Audio is an extension of the highly popular DVD format, distinguished by its capability to deliver high quality multi-channel audio capability previously unavailable in traditional packaged audio media.

SACD: Blu-ray Players that support Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range, some 64x higher resolution then CD , Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just can't hear on a normal CD.

File Compatibility: The Yamaha BD-A1020 Blu-ray disc player supports the following audio, video, and photo files recorded onto BD-R/RE, BD-R, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

File Type File Codec
Audio MP3 (8-320kbps), WMA (32-192kbps), AAC, WAV (LPCM 16-bit/44.1kHz), and FLAC (24-bit/192kHz)
Video DivX+ HD, MKV with H.264, MPEG PS, MPEG TS, MPEG-4, VOB, AVI, ASF, WMV (1920x1080), and AVCHD (DVD-R/RW  & DVD+R/RW only)
Photo JPEG, GIF, and PNG

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit based on the age of the viewer (Kid Safe, G, PG, PG-13, PGR, R, NC-17, Adult, & Off), preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the level you set, & it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Video Features

Video Outputs: The Yamaha BD-A1020 Blu-ray disc player is equipped with one high-definition video output (HDMI) and two standard-definition video output (component/composite).

  • HDMI 1.4 Output: The Yamaha BD-A1020 features a single HDMI (ver.1.4) output for digital audio/video signal transmission. HDMI 1.4 supports 1080p/24Hz resolution, 3D video, Deep Color, x.v.Color, and HDMI CEC. The HDMI output supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 1080p/24 resolutions. Standard definition DVD signals (480p) are scaled and output at the specified resolution via HDMI.
  • Component Video Output: The component video output is capable of 480i & 480p output.
  • Composite Video Output: The DVD player features one Composite video output for standard 480i video playback.

1080p/24Hz Output: The BD-A1020 includes a 1080/24p HDMI output option to faithfully transfer film images as they were originally recorded. When connected to a 1080/24p display, you can enjoy the remarkable video performance of Blu-ray disc without converting or scaling the signal.

DVD Upscaling (via HDMI): Through the HDMI output, the BD-A1020 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 1080p (60/24Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.

3D-Ready: The Yamaha BD-A1020 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. There are two 3D output settings:

  • Auto: This player automatically selects 3D or 2D mode based on video content.
  • Off: This player always selects 2D mode.
Note: 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

x.v.Color: x.v.Color reproduces a wider range of color than the HDTV standard, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect. Currently there is no x.v.Color software available on Blu-ray, but the BD-A1020 is ready to take advantage of x.v.Color discs when they become available.

Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors are displayed. The BD-A1020 can provide 4,096 shades of each of the three primary colors, for a total of 68.7 billion possible colors. This results in greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view additional content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

TV Aspect: Set the TV aspect ratio to match the connected television:

  • 16:9 Full: Stretches a 4:3 image horizontally to fill the 16:9 screen
  • 16:9 Normal: Displays a 4:3 image on the 16:9 screen in its original aspect, with black bars on the sides
  • 4:3 Pan&Scan: Fills a 4:3 screen with a 16:9 signal, centering on the action and cutting off the extreme sides of the picture
  • 4:3 Letter Box: Displays 16:9 video on a 4:3 screen in the letter box mode with black bars at the top and bottom

Video Mode: You can select which Video mode suits your preference, viewing environment, and video content.

  • Standard: The image is natural and well-balanced. This mode is suited for normal use.
  • Vivid: The image is more vivid and sharp.
  • Cinema: The image is suited for watching movies in a dark room.
  • Custom: You can adjust the visual image manually using the following parameters:
    • Brightness: adjusts overall brightness of image
    • Saturation: adjusts the richness of the color in the projected images
    • Hue: adjusts the tint of the projected image
    • Contrast: adjusts the bright areas (white levels) in the image
    • Sharpness: adjusts the sharpness of objects in the video
    • CTI: smoothes out the edges of color images, so color images are rendered more distinct

Advanced Video Settings: The Yamaha BD-A1020 player also offers the following advanced video settings to further fine tuner the player:

  • Color Adjust: You can adjust brightness/saturation/hue for each color (red/green/blue/yellow/cyan/magenta).
  • Auto Contrast: Adjusts contrast to optimize the played back image.
  • Noise Reduction: You can se the Noise Reduction to a level of 0 to 3.
  • De-Interlacing Mode: You can select how to detect the video signal. Set to Auto for normal use. When horizontal stripping noise appears on the screen, set this to Film/Video to remove the noise.

Audio Features

Aluminum Front-Panel: The Blu-ray player features an aluminum front-panel to protect sound quality from vibration.

32-bit/192kHz Audio DAC: The Yamaha BD-A1020 is equipped with a 32-bit/192khz audio DAC (digital-to-analog) converter for superior audio playback from your Blu-ray, DVD, & CD disc collection.

Digital Audio Formats: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output is capable of multi-channel bitstream (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital, and DTS) and multi-channel PCM output. The optical and coaxial digital outputs pass either Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, or 2-channel PCM.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus is an improved Dolby Digital signal format that is compatible with up to 7.1 channels of discrete digital sound and also improves sound quality thanks to extra data bit rate performance. This format provides the facility to support up to 8 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 96kHz/24bit resolution and up to 6 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 192kHz/24bit resolution. Dolby TrueHD is adopted for applications that put very high importance on sound quality.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is a high-resolution audio format, which provides a higher quality audio experience than standard definition surround sound. Its compatible with sampling frequencies of 96 or 48 kHz and up to 7.1 channels of discrete digital sound. High data bit rate performance (2.0-6.0Mbps) provides high quality sound.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio, the premium high definition format, utilizes variable bit-rate technology to deliver the ultimate audio quality, while conserving file size and bandwidth. The result is an uncompromised audio experience that brings movies, music and games to life, just as if you were in the studio listening to the master recording.  This lossless audio format provides the facility to support up to 8 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 96kHz/24bit resolution and up to 6 audio channels with a sampling frequency of 192kHz/24bit resolution.

Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Encoding: The Super Audio CD standard is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology, a 1-bit system with a digital sampling frequency 64x that of conventional audio CD's 2,822,400 samples per second. Mixed with as many of the original frequencies as possible, the audio information audible for human ears sounds much more natural than CD. The DSD bitstream can be output via HDMI or the multi-channel output.

Note: The player's optical & coaxial digital outputs do not support SACD audio output.

Pure Direct: There are two Pure Direct options to optimize sound quality (three counting Off):

  • Mode 1: Turns off the video circuitry and front panel display. This mode is suitable for listening to audio only.
  • Mode 2: Turns off the front panel display and the component and composite video outputs (HDMI is still active). This mode is suitable for watching movies with high quality sound.

Dynamic Range Control: You can activate the Dynamic Range Control (DRC) function to compress the dynamic range of the output signals when playing back DVD/BD recorded in Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, or Dolby TrueHD.

Lip Sync: In some cases when the player is connected to a HDTV, the audio signal may not synchronize with the video signal. If this occurs, adjust the audio delay time to match the video signal. You can set the player to automatically adjust the audio delay or your can manually adjust the audio delay.

Audio Outputs: The Yamaha BD-A1020 Blu-ray disc player is equipped with two digital audio outputs (optical/coaxial) and a stereo analog audio output (RCA).

  • Digital Audio Outputs: This unit features one optical and one coaxial digital output. These can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder, or other component with a digital input. Depending on the source and setting, the output will be Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2-channel PCM. The digital audio outputs can also be set to Re-encode; this adds the secondary audio (picture-in-picture commentary for example), if present, to the main soundtrack and re-encodes the signal as DTS.
  • 2-Channel Audio Outputs: There is an RCA stereo audio output for connecting a TV or receiver. Even when the source audio is multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc), these jacks will output a downmixed 2-channel signal.

Downsampling: You can select the digital audio signal down-sample frequency (48/96/192k) for the player's coaxial and optical digital audio output.
