Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1070
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Everything I thought it would be and much more. Very happy with my purchase.
If you love movies as much as you love music, you need a receiver that lets you get the most out of both. Yamaha's AVENTAGE RX-A1070 has plenty of cutting-edge features, backed by expert construction for exceptional performance and high-quality sound. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X bring movie soundtracks to life with incredible realism. This receiver lets you enjoy 4K Blu-rays and streaming content on up to two compatible displays. The RX-A1070 can play different high-resolution audio formats through the front-panel USB port or from a networked computer. And if you're into vinyl, a phono input provides an easy connection for your turntable.
For their AVENTAGE-series receivers, Yamaha uses custom-designed parts with anti-resonance technology to reduce distortion caused by vibration. A rigid H-shaped frame adds stability to cut out chassis vibration almost completely. A specially designed fifth foot at the center of the receiver's base dampens internal and external vibrations, and an aluminum front panel further reduces resonance to maximize sound quality.
The RX-A1070's meticulous construction, symmetrical amplifier layout, and low-jitter digital circuitry all work together to give you accurate sound with precise stereo imaging and a wide, natural soundstage.
Built-in support for streaming services like Spotify®, TIDAL, and Pandora® lets you play and control your favorite music directly through the receiver. Apple® AirPlay® lets you stream from a compatible iOS® device, and Bluetooth adds even more streaming flexibility. You can even stream audio from the receiver to a set of Bluetooth headphones — great for late-night listening.
Setting up a whole home wireless music system has never been easier. This receiver's built-in MusicCast technology lets you add audio playback in up to nine additional rooms with compatible Yamaha wireless speakers and sound bars.
MusicCast lets you stream music from your personal collection, internet radio, and streaming services. You can also play Bluetooth sources, sound from your TV, and even CDs and vinyl. The free MusicCast Controller app makes it easy to access your music and control what you have playing in different rooms.
The RX-A1070 has outputs for eleven speakers, giving you a few different configuration options. You can set up a standard 7.2-channel surround sound system or a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos system, and use the extra two speaker outputs to power a pair of speakers in a second room. That way, you can enjoy stereo music in Zone 2 while others watch TV in the main room. And you still have two speaker outputs left for a Zone 3 stereo setup.
When Zone 3 is powered on, Yamaha's Intelligent Amp Assign feature automatically redirects the power for the two surround back channels — or the front height channels, depending on your configuration — to your stereo setup in Zone 3, giving you five-channel surround sound in the living room.
If you're happy with a simple 5.2-channel surround sound system, you can also use one of the extra sets of speaker outputs to bi-amp your front speakers for more powerful sound.
Everything I thought it would be and much more. Very happy with my purchase.

Everything I thought it would be and much more. Very happy with my purchase.
The RX-A1070 replaced a 10 year old Denon AVR where the HDMI only passed the video signal, the sound were via optical and digital audio, limiting the sound quality for some components. With no other upgrades, the sound quality produced increased 10 fold for all the components using the same older high end speakers. I should have returned the Denon but missed the return period. Too many wires even with HDMI. Now that my video and audio are in synch I cannot wait to watch the Super Bowl on my big screen TV. I have not set up all the features via WIFI yet, too excited to hear/see how the rest performed.
Pros: * More than one HDMI output * Several HDMI inputs, not requiring video switch * Latest CODEC and WIFI enable removing other blue tooth connection hardware *Sound is amazing with all speakers filling the space with crystal clear sound * Video in synch with audio
Cons: Wish the manual was in paper as well as the DVD provided
The sound system portion of the receiver is very flexible and capable of providing a lot of variations for your sound configuration. Setup is easy, and not complicated at all. Setup is done through an on-screen menu. The receiver unit is pretty lasrge, and may not fit all cabinets (chect\k the measurements carefully before buying the receiver.). Yamaha only provides a Quick Start guide on a CD for guidance. They have links on their website for a full PDF version of the manual. I ended up printing out the necessary pages to setup my sound system.
Pros: Fine Picture. Great Surround sound. Excellent automatic sound balancing.
Cons: Text on remote is tough to read (too small). The unit itself is pretty large, and may not fit all cabinets.
Fantastic receiver! I purchased this for my media room in the basement. It easily fills the room with rich sound. The 4k looks perfect and makes watching movies a pleasure.
Pros: YPAO perfectly tunes the sound to your room. Plenty of power and features.
This is a phenomenal receiver! I have a 5.1 set up (5 speakers plus a sub) and the sound is incredible. I literally cried the first time I heard a song I'd listened to a thousand times when it was routed through this receiver via AirPlay to my existing speakers - I never knew how good it could sound. Note though that you can't stream video from your Apple devices to your tv through any receiver, including this one - that still requires an Apple TV
I've had this AVR for a few weeks, and love it. Paired with a new LG OLED TV, apple TV 4k, driving a set of BA towers and Klipsch center, and SVS PB-2000 sub. Setup was fairly easy using the Yamaha app for iPad and a few things on the TV screen. Ran into some difficulty with HDMI ARC, but solved that with the app by actually reading the hints and help file. My wife loves the preset buttons, once you get a particular setup fine tuned, storing everything makes the device very easy to use. Turns on and sets everything from the TV to the apple device or cable box with one press. The only disappointment is they are still promising a firmware update to make HDR/Dolbyvision/HLG work, presently the AVR doesn't support but the TV does, forcing me to run extra HDMI cables in the wall to allow direct connect of appleTV which outputs native DolbyVision. Still waiting patiently, Yamaha... Knocked off a star for this.
Pros: easy setup great sound, plenty of power for non-ported speakers excellent DSP customization one-button presets to make it easy for the non-technical or children to use
Cons: No support for DolbyVision, HDR, HLG extra wiring required for stream boxes or BlueRay players due to lack of pass-thru of DV, HDR, HLG been promising update to fix this for a long, long time
Great product. I replaced a Denon unit with this Yamaha unit. The Yamaha is far superior to the Denon. Sound quality and DSP is so much better it's hard to compare. And the speaker hum that Denon claimed was a problem with the wiring in my home does not exist with the Yamaha product. Set up was easy, but for me it was just replicating the two zone set up I had with the Denon. HDMI bypass options could be easier to figure out, but once I figured out the settings, everything works as expected. Mobile app is also good, although didn't like that i had to use both the AV Controller app and the Musicast app to get everything set up. Would be easier to have to use just one app. Overall, highly recommend.
Just exactly what I was looking for and Crutchfield's professionals could not have met my needs better. To say that I'm happy with the product and service would be a tremendous understatement.
Pros: Product, availability, price, service, shipping. It doesn't get any better than this!
Cons: Absolutely none
The A1070 is the upgrade to my 7 year old RX-V1065, which was a clean, strong receiver. Out of the box, the A1070 feels solid, and once it was connected to the home network, it immediately found the necessary firmware download. I'm still making small adjustments, however this upgrade was worth the wait. It's powerful, smooth, and lives up to the Yamaha Aventage badge. I'll admit it can be a little complex in certain areas with setup but Crutchfield and Yamaha have the support you need. One of the best highlights is the network capabilities... wired or wireless... to my music cache, which includes hi-res audio AIFF files. The sound quality through speakers is simply amazing. Zone 2 drives my patio setup with ease. And everything can be done through the Yamaha app. Even if you're not familiar with Yamaha, give this receiver a serious look. Not only does it produce great sound, but it's simply fun to use.
Pros: Great sound, excellent app control, MusicCast, network abilities for wireless and wired components/devices, YPAO speaker setup, Yamaha quality
Cons: Could be a little intimidating for novice users or first time DIY setups

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.
Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what speaker layout has been selected and what content is being played back. You can connect up to nine speakers to the AV receiver and it will determine which seven speakers need amplification. You can choose from a variety of amplifier speaker layout configurations.
YPAO Sound Optimization: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker, crossover, & EQ settings.
Compatible Digital Audio Formats: The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.
|Digital Audio Connector||Audio Signal Type||Audio Signal Format|
|HDMI||2Ch Linear PCM||2ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Multichannel Linear PCM||8ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|DSD||2-6ch, 2.8824MHz, 1-bit|
|Bitstream||Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24|
|High Definition Audio Bitstream||Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS Express|
|Optical/Coaxial||2Ch Linear PCM||2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Multichannel Linear PCM||6ch, 32-96Hz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Bitstream||Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24|
Immersive Surround Sound: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats, including Dolby Atmos & DTS:X.
Post Decoding Formats: The Yamaha AV receiver supports Dolby Surround, Neural:X, and DTS Neo:6 (Music/Cinema) to enhance 2-channel and multichannel decoding formats.
Cinema DSP HD3: CINEMA DSP HD3 is Yamaha's flagship 3D soundfield playback technology that takes full advantage of the massive amount of acoustic reflection data included in the soundfield data. Cinema DSP HD3 uses four CINEMA DSP engines with advanced 3D processing to deliver more than twice as much capability for generating acoustic reflections as conventional CINEMA DSP 3D, in addition to high-frequency playback capability, delivering an utterly natural and powerful spatial soundfield. Yamaha's Cinema DSP HD3 lets you enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialog, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 24 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.
HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-A1070 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channel sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, & Bluetooth (SBC/AAC). The Yamaha receiver's Compressed Music Enhancer feature is even optimized for Bluetooth wireless audio streaming. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dialogue Level & Lift: Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialog and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening. Dialogue Lift adjust the perceived height of dialogue sounds. If the dialogue sounds as if it in coming from below the TV screen, you can raise its perceived height by increasing this setting.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-A1070 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-A1070 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Audio Outputs: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver is fitted with binding-post speaker terminals and 7.2ch RCA pre-outs, along with a front-panel headphone jack.
Phono Input: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver features a dedicated Phono (MM) input for connecting your turntable and listening to your vinyl records.
Front-Panel Aux Input: The RX-A1070 features a front-panel stereo RCA input for connecting your portable audio player with a headphone output.
HDMI 2.0a: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver is fitted with eight HDMI 2.0a inputs (7 rear/1 front) and two HDMI 2.0a outputs that support the latest HDMI standards; such as 4K/60Hz, HDCP 2.2, 4:4:4 color subsampling, HDR (High Dynamic Range), and Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020) for full support of today's 4K content from Ultra HD Blu-ray, online video services (like Amazon & Netflix), and future TV broadcast services.
Note: Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.
HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Yamaha RX-A1070 support HDR (high dynamic range) Video - including HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log-Gamma. HDR (High Dynamic Range Video) provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.
Note: Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma will require a firmware update.
4K Video Upscaling: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver will upscale video signals from analog-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 4K. This means a much better picture with TVs capable of 1080p or 4K resolution. Only the receiver's main HDMI output is capable of video upconversion & upscaling; the sub HDMI output does not support video upconversion or upscaling.
Dual HDMI Outputs: The two HDMI outputs can be set to display the same video signal or the second HDMI monitor output can be assigned to Zone 2 for the display of two different HDMI sources; simultaneously.
Other HDMI Features: The Yamaha RX-A1070 AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.

Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.
Remote Connections: The RX-A1070 offers a variety of remote connections for custom integration.
Alexa Compatible (Firmware Update Required): Alexa-enabled devices (including the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap and Echo Show) will soon be able to control key functions of a MusicCast system using voice commands. A firmware update (available early 2018), will be available for download that allows key functions of MusicCast products to be controlled using your voice through Alexa-enabled devices (sold separately).
Note: You will need an Alexa-enabled device (Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, or Echo Show - all sold separately) to operate certain functions of your MusicCast products via voice-command. The MusicCast components and the Alex-enabled devices must be on the same network.
Advanced On-Screen Menu: The RX-A1070 offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese. The front-panel display only offers English.
Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.
Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the receiver's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the Apple iOS or Android app. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button.
Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.
Favorites: You can register up to 40 favorite USB music files, internet radio stations, and/or other network music content as shortcuts ("Favorites") and access them directly. Only the input source will be registered for Bluetooth and AirPlay.
Input Rename & Skip: The receiver automatically creates an input source name that is displayed on the front-panel screen for connected HDMI-compatible sources. You can also manually rename each input so the display reflects the actual source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.
Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.
ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.
Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.
Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

I like the integration with Apple devices w/ Airplay and the iOS app is better than the other brands. I also feel the Yamaha feature lineup between models is simpler and easier to understand. Denon is the worst at this - segmenting the features across their receivers way too much. [ Robert Jan 04, 2018 ]
Several reviews complained about the absent of Dolby vision but Yamaha released an update fixing this issue on 2017-12-13....so that is just what I need.Also, I had 3 Yamaha units in the past, lately I bought an Onkyo tx-rz710 what I deeply regret, I tested Denon and Sony units and were disappointed, so back to Yamaha. Reliability and the Yamaha warranty. [ STEPHEN Oct 02, 2017 ]
This is my 4th Yamaha receiver. All of them were of excellent quality. My 3rd one is still working after 10 years of daily use in my home theater. None of them has ever failed in my home theater, they just became old and outdated. I needed more HDMI inputs, as well as the ability to process 4K UHD and 3D Blu-ray video. The RX-A1070 meets my requirements perfectly. [ G Jul 24, 2017 ]

It is a match I wouldn't make because there are too many ways for this match to not work right and shut off the receiver. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on a receiver for your goals. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101 [ Paul Oct 20, 2017 ] Staff
It does not "require" those clearances but they are certainly recommended by the manufacturer for the best ventilation. [ Ryan Aug 23, 2017 ] Staff
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately there is not a lot more information I can provide. Anything we sell in scratch and dent is going to have a very minor cosmetic flaw. The item has been thoroughly checked and tested. Missing items would be non essential things like brochures, owners manuals, etc. It of course will come with all of your power cords, antenna, remote. Everything is covered by the manufacturers warranty as well as Crutchfield's 60 day satisfaction guarantee. Hope this helps. [ Kenny Jul 18, 2017 ] Staff
