Yamaha RX-A830 AVENTAGE 7.2-channel home theater receiver with Apple AirPlay

Don't settle for "good enough" in your home theater. Make sure your speakers and HDTV are pushed to peak performance. Yamaha's AVENTAGE receivers are designed for no-nonsense sound and picture quality that can satisfy serious music and movie lovers. The RX-A3030 offers a whopping 150 watts per channel in stereo mode and has a total of 9 channels of amplification. It can send audio and video to up to four rooms. And that's just the beginning of this workhorse receiver's many features.

Expand this receiver's reach into as many as four rooms

Yamaha's Intelligent Amp Assign provides outputs for up to 11 speakers, giving the ‘A3030 multi-room versatility to suit your home and equipment. You can power nine channels at a time with this receiver, or up to 11 when you add a separate stereo power amp or receiver. That means you can enjoy 5.2-channel surround in your home theater, while simultaneously powering stereo speakers in two other rooms.

The additional HDMI output offers lots of multi-zone capabilities that many multi-room receivers don't have. You can output audio or video from any source to Zone 2 via HDMI. Plus, Zone 2 HDMI switching means you can watch different content from different sources at the same time. Watch a Blu-ray disc in your main room while the kids watch their favorite show in another room. Or use the second HDMI output to send audio and video to an HDTV in a fourth room, while the receiver powers speakers in three other rooms.

Yamaha RX-A2030 AVENTAGE 9.2-channel home theater receiver with Apple AirPlay

The RX-A3030 can output any digital or analog audio/video source to a second zone via HDMI.

Make your home theater sound even bigger

Of course, you don't have to divide the 'A3030's channels between multiple rooms. If you want to experience more theater-like sound, this receiver is ready to deliver enveloping 9.2-channel surround sound. The 'A3030 includes "surround back" channels like most 7.1 or 7.2 receivers, plus it offers Yamaha's Cinema DSP HD3, which utilizes additional "front presence" or "front height" speakers to increase the soundstage vertically. This delivers movie soundtracks with even more depth and realism, getting you closer to the movie theater experience right in your own home.

High-res audio

Designed with your ears in mind

Yamaha goes the extra mile for excellent sound in its AVENTAGE receivers. The RX-A3030 uses the audiophile-grade ESS SABRE32 Ultra digital-to-analog converter, which decodes the latest high-resolution audio formats with accuracy and detail. Your digital sources like Blu-ray discs and lossless music files will sparkle with definition and life in stereo and surround sound. Independent power supplies for analog and digital circuitry help prevent interference between the two, for purer audio signals. And the symmetrical power amp layout isolates the circuitry for the left and right channels, for a high signal-to-noise ratio and a wide soundstage for stereo music listening.

Apple AirPlay and other streaming music options

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A730 home theater receiver with Yamaha A/V Controller app for iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire

The free Yamaha A/V Controller app gives you easy touchscreen control over the RX-A3030 with your smartphone or tablet.

When you connect the 'A3030 to your home network, you'll open up a whole world of digital music. With built-in support for Apple AirPlay, you can send music from your iPhone®, iPad®, or computer running iTunes® directly to your receiver for playback. If you subscribe to Spotify® or Rhapsody®, you'll enjoy support for their massive music libraries as well. Plus you can stream music from Pandora® or tap into thousands of free radio stations worldwide via vTuner. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer helps give MP3s and other digital music more depth and detail, as well as upconverting CDs and lossless FLAC files for high-resolution playback. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network or a wireless connection using the optional Yamaha Wi-Fi adapter.

A sight for sore eyes

If it's been a while since you last bought a receiver, then the 'A3030's setup and control features will be a welcome improvement. The on-screen guide is full-color with lots of graphics for easy navigation — a far cry from the bare-bones black-and-white menu screens of just a few years ago. Plus, the free Yamaha A/V Controller app provides sophisticated touchscreen control over a wide range of functions from your Apple® smartphone or tablet, Kindle Fire™, or other Android™ device.

4K, 3D, and MHL®-ready

The RX-A3030 is prepared to take on the latest and greatest digital sources. The front-panel HDMI input is MHL-compatible. That means you can connect your MHL-compatible Android tablet or smartphone to send music and HD video through your receiver for playback on your home theater system. Plus, the 'A3030 supports 3D and 4K pass-through, so it can handle today's 3D Blu-ray players and as well as upcoming Ultra HD content as it arrives.

Great receiver. Replaced an Anthem receiver with terminal pink screen issues. Had an older high end Yamaha and this is every bit as good. It was misleading in description as to whether it included WiFi (it doesn't). Only reason I dinged them one star.

Great receiver. Replaced an Anthem receiver with terminal pink screen issues. Had an older high end Yamaha and this is every bit as good. It was misleading in description as to whether it included WiFi (it doesn't). Only reason I dinged them one star.

Pros: Sound selections are great, can actually hear voices in movies and TV.

Cons: No wifi without additional apparatus, so cannot control from ipad application.

It sounds great. It's an improvement from my prior Pioneer receiver.

Great sound, and every feature you could ask of

Ron from Albany NY on 4/25/2014

A high quality audiophile and video fan's receiver. I've had his receiver for 5 months and I'm still amazed by the many features and the flexibility it has. It runs 9 speakers and two subwoofers as well as a second zone using another amplifier. The remote control has been programed to control other equipment and it is illuminated and has a read LCD display. The app makes the receiver completely controllable with any iPad, itouch, or iPhone on my network (android as well). The receiver can play off my network drive, or my laptop, or my phone via airplay. You can bookmark as many net radio stations as you like and control them with your phone. It has a very good phono input (moving magnet) section. The FM section is also wonderful and the HD radio is a plus. And it has legendary Yamaha customized or automated equalization functions with the included microphone. You can mimic various venues, and with surround sound and/or presence speakers simulate these locations in a realistic way. I've found this feature to be more than a gimic. It is useful for opera, classical music, and creates an more realistic sound stage for rock or jazz. If you want to constantly fiddle with the sound, you can or you can leave it alone, your choice. The controls are silky smooth. The read out on the receiver is flexible and useful, although you will need to use a TV to take advantage of the available information and settings. The displays on TV are really wonderful and detailed.

Pros: Powerful flexible, full of quality features HD radio is great Net radio is great IOS apps are full featured, powerful, and flexible, and very easy to use Yamaha support is wonderful they will answer all your questions, and help you set up and customize the receiver for your particular application. If they don't have the answer to your question, they will research it and get back to you.

Cons: You need to connect it directly to your network with an ethernet cable if you want to use an iOS or android app, the net radio, or airplay. You need to connect your Bluray, DVD, CD etc to the receiver and use the receiver to route the video to your TV. This is actually the point of an AV receive. But this means that you cannot watch TV without TV sound and listen to another audio source.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha RX-A3030 certainly lives up to it's reputation as the flagship in the Yamaha line. It has plenty of power and is very versatile to do anything from an ordinary 5.1 setup, to a 9.1 multi-room entertainment swissarmy knife application. It is built like a fortress with an abundant of listening settings. Very clean sound and gobs of horsepower for all your Hi-Fi and home theater needs.

Pros: The do it all receiver for any audio/visual scenario, very clean signal.

    Cons: None so far.

How can it be both Gentle and Rock-Crushing??

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want a receiver that is is fair to middling, don't buy this one! If you are looking for something with enough power to shake your house but also be dynamic enough to assuage the most demanding audiophile among us, this bad boy is for you. Great construction, limitless support of the most recent technologies ... you simply can't go wrong with this top end Aventage.

Pros: Everything ... except be forewarned. You better lay out some dough for speakers worthy of this baby.

Cons: If you don't want to fork out the cash for high-end speakers/don't already have them, then you may want to save some cash and go with the 2030.

    Good Product

JohnD from Greenwood, SC on 12/9/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Meets my expectations and is reasonably easy to use. To the extent I use the unit it functions flawlessly. Works best when using the phone application, so be sure to get that if you purchase this unit - will make controlling unit much easier. The remote functions well, but is a bit difficult to maneuver around the unit for selection of audio settings, and the like.

Pros: Power, flexibility, sound, and value.

Cons: Remote could be easier to use without instructions but phone app resolves this issue.

    Yamaha RX-A3030 AV Receiver

Dave In SC from South Carolina on 7/25/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this receiver on Sunday, received it via UPS on Wednesday. Arrived in great condition. It replaced my old Yamaha RX-V863 AV Receiver. Nothing wrong with the older one, it didn't support HDMI 1.4 and 3D video. The new one is a great receiver so far. I ordered a pair of Klipsch RS-41 for the front presence speakers for a 9.1 surround system. They should complement my other Klipsch speakers, RF-7, RS-25, VS-14, Sub-10, and RC-35 nicely. I installed the free iPad app to control the receiver, it works great, along with the web interface from a web browser.

Pros: Great receiver for the next 5 to 10 years. Used the optical inputs for my Sony Mini-Disc recorder/player, and Sony DAT recorder/player.

Cons: No tape monitor loop, but since the 90's, every AV Receiver I bought quit putting one in. I still use a Nakamichi ZX-7 cassette deck, along with dBx sound processors, etc.

    Audio Features

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

    • High Drive Amp Technology: A fully discrete, high-speed thermal feedback power amplifier helps maximize sound and minimize distortion of the receiver. The Yamaha RX-A3030 AV Receiver is equipped with a 9-channel amplifier rated at 150 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability.
    • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left & right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.
    • Ultra-High Performance 32-Bit DACs: The Yamaha RX-A3030 uses high performance ESS Sabre32 Ultra 192kHz/32-bit DACs (ES9016) for all channels (except Presence channels; uses ES9006 Sabre Premier 192kHz/24-bit DACs). With ESS patented 32-bit Hyperstream DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator, the ES9016 SABRE32 Ultra DACs deliver spectacular music and music soundtracks with an unsurpassed sound stage, with up to 128 dB dynamic range and 0.0003% (-110 dB) total harmonic distortion and free from clock jitter common in digital audio systems. This AV receiver's sound reproduction is for the most discriminating of listeners.
    • Aluminum Front Panel: The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic energy generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.
    • H-Shaped Cross Member Frame: The interior of the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an H-shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. This reduces chassis vibration to virtually zero even during high volume output (seemingly even minor vibrations can affect the sound), maintaining the highest audio quality.
    • A.R.T.: The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge 5th foot is in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers. A.R.T. Wedge 5th foot helps ensure that vibrations do not affect the sound quality.  The AV receiver also employs anti-vibration heatsinks to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure.
    • Double Bottom Construction: An additional bottom cover is added for additional support and to improve sound performance at higher volume levels and also support the power transformer and heat sinks.
    • Independent Power Supplies: Independent power supplies are used for the receiver's analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. These power supplies are highly efficient and result in less power consumption in standby mode.

Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.

    • Basic 9ch: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, & Rear Presence L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Cinema DSP 3D is on, the two Rear Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When Cinema DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode
    • 9ch + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Zone 3 is off, all nine channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 3 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 3 and the Main Zone will receive seven channels of power. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 3. Bi-amp, Zone 2, and Rear Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 9ch + RP: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while the Rear Presence L/R Speakers are powered by an external amplifier. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode. Zone 3 pre-outs are also unavailable.
    • 9ch + Front: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Rear Presence L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while the Front Presence L/R Speakers are powered by an external amplifier. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode. Zone 3 pre-outs are also unavailable.
    • 7ch + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 2) can be connected to the AV receiver. You can enjoy 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo in another room simultaneously. The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + 2 Zones: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Zone 2, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. You can enjoy 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo in Zone 2 simultaneously. However when Zone 3 is turned-on, the main zone will be limited 5.1ch surround with no surround back speakers (Zone 2 will stay active). The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to either zone. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + Front + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver for playback of audio in two separate rooms. The two Front L/R speakers will be powered by an external amp. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Zone 2 and Rear Presence speakers are not available.
    • 7ch + FP + RP:  Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while Front and Rear Presence Speakers are powered by external amps. Zone 2/3 pre-outs are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp: Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Extra Speaker amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Zone 2/3 and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp + 1 Zone: Up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Extra Speaker 1 amplifier channels of the AV receiver are assigned to bi-amp the front speakers. The Extra Speaker 2 amplifier channels of the receiver are assigned to Zone 3. Zone 2 and  Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp + FP + RP: Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while Front and Rear Presence Speakers are powered by external amps. The Extra Speaker amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. Zone 2/3 speaker channels are pre-outs are not available in this mode.

YPAO R.S.C. (Reflect Sound Control) w/ Angle Measurment: YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds. Yamaha's YPAO-R.S.C. system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, angle of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

    • Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each.
    • Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate crossover frequency for each channel.
    • Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel.
    • EQ: Each channel has a parametric equalizer; choose one of three target settings before running the setup.
      • Natural: adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright
      • Flat: use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics
      • Front: EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system
    • Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.
    • Angle Measurement: The direction (angle) of the front speakers, surround speakers, and presence speakers as seen from the listening position is measured, and compensation is applied to the soundfield in order to maximize the effectiveness of the CINEMA DSP soundfield.

Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-A3030 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes:
      • Panorama: sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect
      • Dimension: adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room
      • Center Width: moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 23 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie
    • Entertainment Soundfields: Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game, Music Video
    • Music Soundfields: Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Hall in Amsterdam, Church in Freiburg, Church in Royaumont, Chamber, Village Vanguard, Warehouse Loft, Cellar club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, 9ch Stereo
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.

CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

    • Adaptive DSP Level: You can change the receiver's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can manually adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB. Or, with Adaptive DSP Level, the receiver automatically adjust the Cinema DSP effect level in conjunction with volume adjustments.
    • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
    • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
    • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround back soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
    • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-A3030 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using Presence Speakers, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • Cinema DSP HD3: CINEMA DSP HD3 is Yamaha's flagship 3D soundfield playback technology that takes full advantage of the massive amount of acoustic reflection data included in the soundfield data. Cinema DSP HD3 uses four CINEMA DSP engines with advanced 3D processing and supports front & rear presence speaker output (plus Virtual Presence Speaker mode), in order to deliver more than twice as much capability for generating acoustic reflections as conventional CINEMA DSP 3D, in addition to high-frequency playback capability, delivering an utterly natural and powerful spatial soundfield.
    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center/presence speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-A3030 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Pure Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, dims the front-panel display, and cancels AV output to allow sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel or multi-channel sources. During Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer

Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-A3030 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-A3030 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-A3030 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-A3030 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The Yamaha RX-A3030 AV receiver allows you to configure a multi-zone audio/video system for your home. The multi-zone configuration feature enables you to set this unit to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone, second zone (Zone 2), third zone (Zone 3) and fourth zone (Zone 4).

    • Zone 2/Zone 3: The receiver's Zone 2/Zone 3 outputs allow you to play the same or different audio/video sources in other rooms of your home. The receiver has dedicated stereo preamp outputs (requires separate amps) for both Zone 2 & 3, or the built-in amplifier can power speakers in the second and/or third zones connected to the Extra Speaker 1 and Extra Speaker 2 terminals. If either Zone 2 or Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, when Zone 2 or Zone 3 is turned on, the receiver's Presence speakers in the main room are turned off.  If both Zone 2 and Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, when Zone 2 and Zone 3 is turned on, the receiver's Presence and Surround Back speakers in the main room are turned off. The analog video monitor outputs (component video, S-video, and composite video) can also be assigned to Zone 2 or Zone 3 (but not both). The volume of Zone 2 or Zone 3 can be controlled by the Yamaha receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output. You can select the following input sources for Zone 2 or 3.
      • Analog Audio/Video Inputs (the video conversion between analog video jacks does not work for the multi-zone output; to watch video in another zone, you need to connect the Zone 2/3 video monitor out in the same way as the video input device)
      • Digital Audio Inputs (Optical/Coaxial; 2ch PCM only to Zone 2 only)
      • AM/FM Tuner (you cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for each zone)
      • USB (including iPod/iPhone)
      • AirPlay for iPod touch/iPhone/iPad/iTunes
      • Internet Radio (different network sources cannot be played back in multiple zones at the same time)
      • DLNA/Media Player contents
    • HDMI Switching: The receiver's HDMI Output 2 terminal can be assigned to output audio/video content to Zone 2 or Zone 4 (but not both). Yamaha's advanced HDMI zone switching adds the capability to choose from all analog or digital audio/video sources for playback in Zone 2. However, Zone 4 only offers playback of the same or different HDMI connected audio/video sources. The Zone 2/4 HDMI output can be connected directly to a TV for basic video and 2ch audio playback. It can also be connected to a secondary home theater receiver for multi-channel playback in another zone. An on-screen graphical user interface makes it easy to browse and select content to enjoy from Zone 2 (not Zone 4), no matter what is being played in the main zone.
    • Party Mode: The Party Mode allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone2 & Zone3, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the party mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone, Zone2, & Zone3 play at the same volume level during Party mode. Utilize this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home. Zone 4 is only available when an HDMI input source is selected in the main zone.

Note: Unfortunately, a USB source (including iPod/iPhone) and Network connected sources (Internet Radio/Media Player) cannot be played back in different Zones at the same time.

Input Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.

    • Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
    • Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable from 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

    Remote Control

Learning/Multibrand Remote Control (with LCD): The receiver comes with a learning/multibrand wireless remote control. In addition to the receiver, the remote can be programmed to control multiple brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc. If you cannot find a remote control code for your playback device or if any key on the remote control does not work after you set the program code, you can use the Learn function to "teach" the receiver's remote to operate your playback device. The remote also offers a Macro function which allows you to program a series of button operations in sequence to a single button on the remote. This remote can remember up to 4 macro functions; each macro can record a maximum of 10 steps. The remote features an LCD window which displays operational information. With a single press of a button you can illuminate the remote control's buttons for 10 seconds.

HDMI Control: The Yamaha AV receiver supports the HDMI control function, which allows you to operate external components via HDMI. If your TV or other external components support HDMI control, you can use the remote controls of those devices to operate some of this unit's functions, and to synchronize this unit with the operation of those devices. You can use the following operations with the remote control of any of the connected HDMI Control compatible devices.

    • Power synchronization (On/Standby)
    • Volume control, including Mute
    • Changing the volume of the audio output signal device (either the TV or the receiver)

AV Controller App: This AV Controller App (free) will turn your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad or Android device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. This App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands. You can browse content from all internally available sources such as Internet Radio, USB and AM/FM tuners. You can also control all AV receiver zones such as powering on and changing input for each zone. This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play, Stop and Forward. In addition, you can browse music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device and wirelessly transfer the content to the Yamaha A/V receiver for playback.

    • AV Controller App for Apple: The free AV controller App for Apple is available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store. It supports the iPod touch, iPhone , or iPad with iOS 4.2 or higher installed.
    • AV Controller App for Android: The free AV controller App for Android is available for download from the online Google Play. Requires Android 2.1 and up.
Note: You must have a wireless network in your home and the Yamaha AV receiver & Apple or Android device connected to the same network.

Remote Connections: The RX-A3030 offers a variety of remote connections.

    • Remote Jacks: The receiver has two remote input and two remote output minijack (3.5mm) terminals for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.
    • 12V Trigger Outputs: The RX-A3030 has two programmable mini-jack outputs (3.5mm) to send 12-Volt DC turn-on signals to other components that accept a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier or motorized projection screen. The triggers are programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room or Zone 2) or a specific source.
    • RS-232C Port: The AV receiver's RS-232C port provides seamless integration with a wide range of third-party home automation control systems.

Hello Johnni ,I have had my RX-A3030 for about a month. This is a great receiver and sounds great. Feature set is very good. Very happy with purchase[ Brian  Jan 26, 2014 ]
The main reasons why I went with A3030 are:1) ESS Sabre DA Chip. I have the same chip in my DA converter that I use for computer files, and transporter. I really like the musical sound that this chip produces.2) I wanted 11.2 surround sound (yeah, I know, that is an overkill, but I have found the sound envelop to be very smooth. I rarely can pinpoint which speaker the surround sounds are coming from.)3) Airplay, eventually, I may do something with that.[ SAI  Jan 21, 2014 ]
RX a3030 is awesome A lot of machine but if you're looking to create a full home theater experience consider it Got mine a few weeks ago and it's fantastic[ JONATHAN  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Well, not familiar with the RXZ-9, just can say I am very impressed with the 3030. In addition, in consumer stuff, technology moves very fast, so you will get the latest in signal processing and features. In my opinion, buy a new one. Maurilio.[ MAURILIO  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Hi Johnny,I had an agonizing decision as well. I had been running a Yamaha DSP-A1 since 1997 (it held the record for longest continuous use electronic component in my house). It was time to upgrade and I looked at Pioneer SC-79 and the latest Sony ES and the Yamaha. In the end my experience with Yamaha told me that for sound processing they are in their own class, video they are very close to the top, but reliability and build quality were key for me. Seeing their last standard bearing flagship receiver work for 15+ years for me was what sealed the deal. I can tell you I am very happy with the purchase, it was easy to setup, things just work as you'd expect, the on-screen interface is easy to use. I enjoy having the HD digital radio built in. The connectivity options are unique in the industry (still gives you S-Video, for me having an LD player I still use was nice). Power output is great, clean and reliable. Video processing is superb, one day I will have a 4K display and I am sure I'll really see this unit shine. My recommendation is to get new, you'll have a 3 year warranty from Yamaha but in my experience you should not even need it.[ HARVEY  Jan 20, 2014 ]
I'm really happy with the. RX A3030 - using it in a 9.2 configuration in a media room. It replaced a higher priced Denon that did not sound nearly as good.[ BO  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Go for it Johnni....This is the 3rd High end AV Receiver I have had and the best by fAR[ WILLIAM A  Jan 20, 2014 ]
I have been very happy with the RX-A3030. I use it for both music and movie applications. I power 2 B&W 6000 series front speakers, a B&W center channel, and 2 Niles Audio rear channels. The receiver has enough power for my needs and sound quality is excellent.I am NOT familiar with the RX-Z9, but I believe that it does not have Android & IOS application integration. I have really enjoyed the ability to control the receiver through my iPad and iPod. The RX-A3030 also has AirPlay and a direct USB interface for iPad and iPOD. All great features!Hope this helps with your decision.[ THOMAS J  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Yes you sure can[ WALTER  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Absolutely. You can send it to any zone. It may turn on the main zone when you first do it, but you can turn it off and continue using AirPlay on zone 2. This is a great feature about this receiver where others require the main zone set to AirPlay in order to stream audio to other zones.[ ERICK  Dec 10, 2013 ]
I found the answer so I am posting here to close this out... From the Yamaha website:Compatible Zone Sources: You can select the following input sources for Zone 2/3. Analog Audio/Video Inputs (the video conversion between analog video jacks does not work for the multi-zone output; to watch video in another zone, you need to connect the Zone 2/3 video monitor out in the same way as the video input device) AM/FM Tuner (you cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for each zone) USB (including iPod/iPhone) AirPlay Internet Radio (vTuner) DLNA/Media Player contents Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2/3.Thanks to all for the help.[ Tom  Dec 10, 2013 ]
Unfortunately, I don't answer to that question because I don't run zone 2. From the owners manual, it appears that you cannot send AirPlay audio to zone 2. Sorry I couldn't help you.[ THOMAS J  Dec 10, 2013 ]
I use airplay via the AV controller app on either my IPhone or Ipad to stream my Music in iTunes Larry[ LARRY  Dec 10, 2013 ]
    I don't know.......I only use our for PS3, and 3d DVD and sound around....sorry..[ CARL C  Dec 10, 2013 ]
I don't know. I think yes. The unit seems reasonably intuitive, however, I have not tried setting up another zone as it is unnecessary for me.Best wishes[ JOHN D  Dec 09, 2013 ]
